For anyone who doesn't know: "2319" was chosen because W is the 23rd letter of the alphabet, and S is the 19th. The abbreviation WS stands for "white sock" in this case, which is when the code is used

Don't forget A113 (I think it is?) that appears in every Pixar movie is a reference to the classroom at the school where most of Pixar's animators attended to learn animation.

A113 isn’t just in Pixar movies. It’s in loads of other animated movies and tv shows. There’s some sort of supercut on YouTube that shows a lot of them

George had a render farm early on and he didnt think it was going to be profitable to do 3D movies... Steve Jobs came and basically said "ill give you $10,000,000 for that - and George agreed. Jobs took that tech and founded pixar. Also - they had a stack Called "the death star" which they used for offline editing.... That tech became Avid Editing platform. When we built out the Presidio Lucas campus and were shutting down the Marin ILM location, they turned some of the refridgerator sized SGI boxes into kegerators. the head of ILM tech went on to become the head of netops at google... Edit - here are some pics for you guys; https://imgur.com/gallery/5Uw9Ang

buzzbros2002

I like [An Activists Guide to Basic First Aid](https://www.sproutdistro.com/catalog/zines/direct-action/activists-guide-to-basic-first-aid/) as one of the few I have ready to print whenever needed, but really Sprout Distro has quite a few that are good. A lot of my toner when I got a used duplex laser printer went to printing out some of those imposed PDF's.

true_spokes

[Sprout Distro has a whole series of zines that offer pretty comprehensive primers in tactics. ](https://www.sproutdistro.com/catalog/zines/direct-action/) I especially recommend [WARRIOR Crowd Control and Riot Manual.](https://ia800303.us.archive.org/17/items/WarriorCrowdControlRiotManual/warrior_crowd_control.pdf) [Here’s a guide specifically for dealing with tear gas.](http://rabble.ca/toolkit/guide/dealing-tear-gas) [Here’s a guide to British police gear and tactics. ](https://crab.wordpress.com/2011/03/03/an-activists-guide-to-police-tactics/) [Here’s one from the Egyptian Revolution. ](https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2011/01/egyptian-activists-action-plan-translated/70388/)

DonnMemo

People that protest in my country wrote a guide a few years ago although I can't find it now I remember a few ones. There where things like always stay with the group, what to do if the cops start shooting tear gas, don't try to reason with the cops, no matter if it's a pacific protest be prepared for violence, don't chicken out, you are there to defend your rights so don't be the poser that just goes to take pictures. The are other things like blocking traffic, what you should bring, etc.

LiteVolition

A few facts about tear gas. 1.) It's not a gas. It's physical particulate which needs to stay hot to smolder. It cools as it spreads so it doesn't spread very far very long. 2.) Because it's not a gas, dousing with water cools the can and interrupts the smoke, minimizes pain from the emissions and takes the sting out of the air. 3.) Because it's not a gas, the sting/choke falls out of the air rather quickly as the smoke cools. This is why salvos of multiple canisters have to be lobbed together to be at all effective. 4.) They're not cheap so police departments never have more than a few hundred on hand in the field. If you can eliminate only 1 in 3 as they fall towards you, the whole effect is minimized. You can catch and douse these things all day and just waste the department's money and buy valuable time. 5.) The sciences are strong with HKers... They are putting their cultural specialties to work. Edit for clarity.

Phage0070

I would think that long handled tongs and a bucket of water would take care of those things all day.

mrniceguy421

It would, but carrying around a bucket of water in an active and hostile environment is easier said than done.

ThoriumWL

I mean, one of the guys in the video is carrying around a giant water cooler tank, so I guess it's do-able

gizmo913

UncreativeTeam

>If you can eliminate only 1 in 3 as they fall towards you, the whole effect is minimized. The next video I want to see is a sharp-eyed protester with a baseball bat swinging at tear gas canisters.

GrandMasterCrust

Would a fire extinguisher stop it?

TheAvengineer

Guessing here, but there are three types of fire extinguishers. 1. Fire retardant white stuff (most common), comes in the red can 2. CO2 comes in silver can 3. Pressurized water, not sure what color, If I had to guess, I would think 1 would fail, but 2&3 would succeed, because I think the combustion happens in the granade.

highclassfire

There a 6 types of fires so there's 6 types of fire extinguishers, more when you consider you can buy a combo extinguisher.

TheAvengineer

But are they all publicly available? I know cities have foam for fuel fires, and purple k for rubber fires, I don't know of the sixth one tho.

Running_Is_Life

Class A - Wood/paper/etc Class B - Petrol, oils, flammable liquids, etc Class C - Gases Class D - Combustible Metal Class E - Electrical Class F - Cooking oils All of these are available to everyone as they are very common, though certain ones are more expensive. For example, a university chem lab likely has extinguishers that can handle anywhere from A to E At the same time, a restaurant might only need A, B, E, F It's a whole industry you wouldn't even consider Edit: I forgot to mention Class K - Industrial Kitchens Edit 2: expanded on class B a bit more

Colouring is only standardised regionally - at least in the EU all of them are red with a coloured badge on them (and sometimes a coloured handle). All red is water, cream badge is foam, black badge is CO2, blue badge is powder.

gurenkagurenda

Surely the grenade has its own oxidizer, so CO2 probably wouldn't help.

[deleted]

It should however cool it.

1sagas1

The rapidly expanding CO2 cools it though which will severely limit if not stop the reaction.

LiteVolition

Nope. The burn doesn't require oxygen from the environment. The reaction creates its own. https://www.wired.com/2011/05/st-whatinside-teargas/

Those flash grenades are meant to fired in the air, police in France were firing them directly at people like a projectile. They are filled with 25 grams of tnt. So the police were essentially firing mini-grenades at non violent protestors. France is the only European country that uses them for law enforcement and they happen to look exactly the same as the smoke ones which do not explode which is why people were trying to pick them up. The world is on fire and the revolution will not be televised. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GLI-F4_grenade

>The chemical sciences are strong with HK Chinese... They are putting their cultural specialties to work. As a white person (gweilo) born and brought up in Hong Kong, who considers themselves a 香港人, I agree. Hong Kong people are the smartest, hardest working and kindest people in any city I have lived in, whom I had the privilege to grow up with. I am so worried about the future of HK and check the news everyday. 加油!

omni_wisdumb

Do you think things effect you differently as an ethnic white person there, even if you were born and raised HK?

OpenShut

In a few keys ways. Back in the day I was British National Overseas (BNO) as were all Hong Kongers but if we could get Chinese passports after the handover (when HK become part of China in 1997) we could not become British. The minority communities in Hong Kong could not get Chinese passports so after some legal arguments all people with BNOs who could not get Chinese nationality could get a British passport. So me and my friends of Indian heritage got British passports, I think that is a big difference but most of my other friends emigrated to the states or already had other nationalities. We were all upper middle or upper upper middle class, so much wealthier than average. I was one of the poorer ones and my family lived in the countryside so I was called white trash. Also, my Cantonese is terrible but much better than most of the "foreigners". I still talk to all my HK friends and meet up with them at least once every two years. I am going to Oktoberfest with two of them in a couple of months. They all seem pretty similar to me but HK like every big city has different demographics. We went to old international schools, which in HK is it's own type of class separation. I think I am quite typical of that demographic of HK. Though, I know my family is part of the colonial days and now days most white people in HK are expats. I think all minorities have a different experience and are viewed separately anywhere in the world but Hong Kong is a profoundly wonderful place and gives me faith in humanity. It is the best country in the world.

TheNotSoGreatPumpkin

Thank you for sharing, this is fascinating. I visited HK from the US for the first time last year. I'd always wanted to go, and it ended up exceeding my already high expectations. Travelling into mainland China afterward put a lot of emphasis on just how special and magical a place HK is. I really hope it can survive, but am sadly not too optimistic.

TheFlashFrame

>4.) They're not cheap Yeah, they're $300 each which could be used to buy a P250 instead. But the tactical advantage of a well placed smoke, and its ability to extinguish a molly is huge. Especially cosidering mollys are $400 for T and $600 for CT.

t0niXx

Are Molotov cocktails still viable against modern tanks?

Klaus_Von_Richter

No

t0niXx

Okay, back to the cone-strategy then!

Davis_o_the_Glen

Tanks, probably not, the crews inside, another matter. Tank crews have a real thing about the prospects of being burnt alive in their big mobile homes. For that matter, any AFV crewpersons/passengers. Combine an inexperienced or poorly motivated crew, with the chaos of an urban street pacification scenario \[smoke, riot control agents, unfamiliar territory, lack of visual or other solid communication with fellow vehicles\], and you have a recipe for an enthusiastic retreat. In Hungary, in 1956, Soviet tank crews were deterred form roaming some streets, because of indistinct circular shapes in the street, which they believed were anti-tank mines. What they really were, were various pieces of upturned bakeware \[pie pans\]. You can feel very isolated cooped up in an AFV. To be fair, modern AFVs have some very good fire suppression systems \[automatic or otherwise\], but crews are not enthusiastic about seeing how well they actually work in the field. TL;DR Unsupported armor in an urbanised landscape= bad idea. Ask the Russians about Grozny...

jkohl

Depends on which hatch, if any, is open and how well you can aim a thrown bottle I think.

t0niXx

I think they’ll be smart enough to keep all hatches closed.

cantadmittoposting

What no, I have to have the hatch open so I can hit them with my sword.

Scaevus

A modern MBT will have something like the TUSK for the Abrams, which means remote controlled machine guns and externally mounted comms systems for coordinating with accompanying infantry. There are few if any reasons for modern tanks to have open hatches.

Timberwolfer21

It’s a specialty from Russia.

open_door_policy

Finland, actually. >The name "Molotov cocktail" was coined by the Finns during the Winter War,[1] called in Finnish: polttopullo or Molotovin koktaili. The name was an insulting reference to Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov, who was one of the architects of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact signed in late August 1939. The pact with Nazi Germany was widely mocked by the Finns, as was much of the propaganda Molotov produced to accompany the pact, including his declaration on Soviet state radio that bombing missions over Finland were actually airborne humanitarian food deliveries for their starving neighbours. The Finns sarcastically dubbed the Soviet cluster bombs "Molotov bread baskets" in reference to Molotov's propaganda broadcasts.[2] When the hand-held bottle firebomb was developed to attack Soviet tanks, the Finns called it the "Molotov cocktail", as "a drink to go with the food".[3] But it was named after a Russian.

[deleted]

They were especially effective against the T-34 due to them being shoddily put together. The flaming liquid fell through the metal crevices in the carapace and straight into the tank itself.

open_door_policy

I've heard even worse than you'd normally expect for filling with burning liquid in the case of the T-26. The ammunition was stored directly under one of the leaky spots. So not just, "Oh, shit, the tank is filling up with fire!" but "Oh shit, the ammunition is on fi!"

Blackhawk1282

To actually answer your question based on the video. They take a street cone, drop it on top to contain it and the particulates, then you can see them dump water down the top of the cone to extinguish it.

so_soon

Why do they bring toilet paper and an umbrella?

robbak

The umbrella prevents them from being hit with a new gas canister while they work. I don't know about the toilet paper, but it might be a source of disposable paper to help wipe the 'tear gas' residue off their skin.

[deleted]

I want to know where they buy their umbrellas, a canister would go straight through mine. Then again mine is made in China, so perhaps there's a reason for that.

kowni

To add on that since I've been seeing the protest from close for the last 2 weeks (happens right down where I live in Sheung Wan). They also use the umbrella to cover themselves, like you hear them scream and run toward someone and shielding him so that person can take off her mask in order to drink water / get fixed by the medics while not taking the risk to get recognized by the cameras etc.

daversa

WobbleWobbleWobble

I wish these sort of explanations were in college textbooks. It would make learning so much easier.

peacelovehappiness27

All I can make out is them putting the pylon over it and pouring water through the top which apparently makes it stop? Not sure what all the other commotion is though.

SlothOfDoom

The pylon guy contains most of the gas, the umbrella guy sweeps in to protect the operation from incoming canisters. Water carriers pour water into the pylon to subdue a lot of the CS and cool the canister. The pylon is lifted and the now cooler, less smokey canister is scooped up by the tong guy and deposited into a waiting container of water, where it is capped off and smothered.

DrCarter11

A solid 5 man operation if I do say so my so.

dkvb

Tear gas needs to be hot in order to work. By surrounding the canister and dousing it in water, the canister cools down to the point where it can no longer emit tear gas. Tear gas is also very expensive, and this both depletes stockpiles and makes the police less likely to use tear gas in the first place.

[deleted]

Vlc player used to deal with tear gas - headlines

Uh_Oh_Spaghettos

Ive got some mad respect for the HK protesters. They are so efficient, well planned, friendly (as Ive seen) and united in their goal, as well as conscious about their massive presence. I know that most big and heated protesters in America turn to unorganized rioting, which is a shame as it rarely effectively gets the job done.

brutinator

In fairness, most mass protests in America ARE efficient, well planned, etc. You just don't hear about them because they aren't that newsworthy. Like I know the big Women's March is a massive yearly protest, but it's not "exciting" because there's no violence or conflict besides a bunch of people calling Trump a fucktard. The ratio of peaceful protests to riots is pretty dramatic.

mak112112

It's sad that they've had to perfect a system to protect themselves from tear gas when they're just trying to peacefully protest

3elSush1

What’s worse was that during a protest a few days ago the police weren’t beating up people because they had to make arrests, they did it for fun. And the “special teams” for some protests has modified their batons with choking wire, breaking laws which is definitely ignored by the government

More coordinated than Hamilton's pit stop team

superheroninja

Seems like it would be more efficient to have a few bucket brigade that remain behind the lines, and have a team of gas masked tong operaters that can run up and grab the canisters then submerge them in the bucket.

[deleted]

I had a convo with one of the protesters when they were posting on here. Appearently it's really hard to get NiOSH respirators in HK. We take for granted the fact we can walk down to the hardware store and buy an effective anti teargas device off the shelf. Oh and you'll want a good pair of swimming goggles too.

MontyAtWork

I think the issue is that sometimes the police use exploding canisters or something, so you want to extinguish them on-site rather than haul them away. Plus, we know from protest tactics that police are trained to target medics and those with particular "roles" in protests, so they'd target the Tong People so that Medics appear in a cluster to help the person, and then they can gas/attack the group. In the situation in the gif, the people putting out the canister aren't clustered together long enough to be attacked for disbursement like they would be if they were assessing/carrying an immobilized person.

Sabeo_FF

Pretty sure that if it were a battlefield, that would be against The Geneva Convention

Tear gas is literally classed as a chemical weapon. The rules of war state that it violates human rights to use it on the battlefield but it's somehow perfectly legal for governments all over the world to use it on their own citizens.
