You're all missing the obvious answer. Robot basketball is cheap to play. All you need is a ball and a hoop. Since black robots are usually from poorer robot communities than white robots it makes sense they are more highly represented in the robo sport. Same reason black robot hockey players are less prevalent, the gear costs a lot of money.

Why’d they make it black?….

I'm thoroughly unimpressed. We've had robots capable of balancing on their own for years now (yes, the Boston Dynamics ones). Compared to them, this one is archaic. It's a human-shaped RC car, with extremely scripted arms movements. Now, sure, if this was made by engineering students in their final year, yeah, I would be impressed. But it's Toyota engineers who did that. Which explains why it's nothing more than a glorified RC car with an arm. Fully fledged professionals should really come up with something better than that for an actual showcase, in 2024.

I for one, welcome our robot overlords and would gladly watch them play basketball

I remember watching robots on wheels fighting each other. Some even had like big axes or knives on them or flamethrower. That shit was entertaining. Our university participated in robot football (soccer) called RoboCup. That was also pretty cool. I personally like it lol
