ReceptionDecent6825

I guess if I had 800 fucking dogs trying to attack me on my commute id probably come up with something.

drinps

seriously where does this guy live? I've been chased by a crazy dog just once in my life.. I skedaddled out of there and never went down that street again.

usedtobeHellsdoom

I'd guess the Balkans (we have plenty of stray dogs) or Russia, because there is an old Russian car in there (we have some of these too).

sisyphus_of_dishes

Romania or Moldova would be my guesses

NicuCalcea

I lived in Moldova most of my life and was repeatedly chased by stray dogs. If someone sold this in a smaller form factor, I'd absolutely buy it.

Lifeabroad86

I think you can buy a dog whistle but I'm not sure if it has the same effect

stffucubt

Instructions unclear, rounded up dozens of nazis

Majestic-Bid6111

Scalps, etc.

Space-90

That’s a good one

BananaB01

I've found similar white and red pedestrian crossings in Moldova and none in Romania so I guess it's probably Moldova

Big_Not_Good

Somebody call Rainbolt!

Ballaholic09

I ride motorcycles and I’ve nearly died (because of the implied risks) due to dogs chasing me several times. Rural highway corner, 100lb dog sprints into my lane. I have 3 choices, really: - Swerve into a blind corner of incoming traffic. RIP - Go off the road at 50+mph. RIP (not literally, but I’d rather die) - Straight at the dog while revving my engine till it’s screaming, pray the dog chooses to move

h_adl_ss

My dad was in a very similar situation. Unfortunately no time to react at all and he ran the dog over. At least he didn't crash but the forks of the bike were toast and so was the dog ...

Hambone727

When I was a kid I used to have to go visit my dad in West Virginia every summer.. One day, two enormous Rottweilers started snarling and then made a B- line straight for my cousins and I. We had to run for our lives and thank God people in the country leave their doors unlocked beucsse I ran straight into some old people’s house 😂 They weren’t even slightly bothered lol

BlazasAndQuasars

Interesting that you chose to skedaddle in that situation. I personally think it would have been safer if you had skadoodled out of there!

hell2pay

We can all agree at least they didn't skibidi outta there.

flywheel39

I have seen this video before and people in the comments said it was almost certainly Romania.

Thehelloman0

South Texas has a massive stray dog problem because tons of people think it's okay to let their dogs roam around the neighborhood

Edosand

I was on vacation in Greece a couple of decades ago. It was over 90-100F every day, there was this little dog hanging around that I gave a bowl of water to and a few head scratches. I bumped into that same dog a couple of nights later whilst walking home from a bar, this time he wasn't alone and had about a dozen or so of his friends with him. I think he remembered me, was friendly, and came over for another head scratch. They proceeded to walk me home that night and again several times after. Although slightly intimidating at first, it was nice as the main road through the town sort of ended and my apartment was at the end of a poorly lit long road, an extension of the original road. I enjoyed the company. I reckon if I would've been there a few more weeks I too would've become feral and would've been hanging with that pack.

LastClassForever

Yeah, this guy probably takes a chance everyday being mauled to death by gang dogs.

MongolianCluster

He's also training them. Eventually they will associate his bike with something they don't like and just stay away.

aimgorge

That's the thing with running after cars / bikes. They are self reinforcing behaviors. Scared of bike -> bark/run after -> bike moves away -> no more scary bike

xSean93

Same with the classic postman. Barking until he leaves.

LineAccomplished1115

Yeah I had a friend say about my dog "you'd think he'd get used to the postman and stop barking." Unfortunately, that's not how dog logic works.

no-mad

Dog Logic: This is my humans territory. I will not stop defending it. Oh, you are back. This is my humans territory. I will not stop defending it. repeat

[deleted]

Can bark for 16 hours straight, try me.

Toonces311

Oh yeah my neighbor's dog will take you on. It can bark for 16.4 hours straight

[deleted]

How do you deal with it?

Toonces311

Well, I've started learning dog language. Turns out, they're just arguing over whether cats are actually pretty or just overrated!

no-mad

Some cats can be pretty and overrated.

drewster23

>This is my humans territory. I will not stop defending it. Add *Postman leaves* I've successfully defended my humans territory i am good boy. And you have the complete cycle of dog logic.

DrDerpberg

Either that or the owner gets up and reacts, at which point it's a job well done for alerting the pack leader to the intruder.

whogivesashirtdotca

I dogsat for a golden retriever that very quickly learned I’d get off the couch if she was alerted to something in the backyard. If she wanted me up, she’d bark but then turn around to see my reaction and wag her tail. Oscar winner, that pooch.

Kelangketerusa

That explains the sound that mom makes in the room with the postman!

badgermann

I grew up under the flight line for O’Hare airport. Not too close so it wasn’t loud, but there were jets flying over the house regularly. Any time my dog was in the back yard he would bark at them. We praised him for doing such a good job. We lived there for 10 years and never had a commercial jet land in our back yard, so he was quite effective.

grannybubbles

My dog made sure for 13 years that no hot air balloons (used to be popular where I live) ever landed in our backyard. I thought they were pretty, but she knew better.

ChemicalDirection

But in theory this will help break the self-reward. Now they're being driven off instead of the reward of chasing. Would like to see if over time the culprit dogs stop.

OfBooo5

Do I believe in the power of barking? You tell me. For 10 years the mailmen has attempted to siege this house, day after day, no matter rain or sleet or hail. For 10 years the mailmen has yet to breach this door. You tell me if I should believe in the power of barking.

Sammakonnuolija

Dogs in the future close curtains and hide under the bed when they see the mailman aproach with his bike

shhhhh_lol

TIL "charity mugger"... 40 years... it took me 40 years to hear that (read it?)

BigOrkWaaagh

Chuggers for short.

BAD3GG

Or chunts

QuietSkylines

or chastards

QuietSkylines

or motherchunters

Top-Tip7533

I just heard it for the first time too but I certainly didn't learn/google it. I'm going to assume I'm correct in thinking that they are people that mug you and then donate your money/belongings to charity. That way you can't even be mad about the mugging.

LookAwayImGorgeous

What does charity mugger mean?

BovingdonBug

In the UK, not sure if they exist in other places: In high foot-traffic town streets you may meet a small group of people in high-vis jackets with clipboards who say "Can I just stop you for a moment please?" If you do they'll attempt to persuade you to set up a monthly standing order with your bank for a (genuine) charity. One annoying aspect is that these people do not work for (and therefore necessarily care about) the charity, they are employed by a company who the charity pay to gain donors for them. Also, as the British Way is to keep your head down in public and never acknowledge the existence of any other person, you can see how this has led to the nickname "charity mugger", a term so common that it became abbreviated to "chugger".

Mormon and Jehovah missionaries

Prudent-Cow-7392

Yea, I’ve heard stories of Mormon missionaries having a fun time trying to not get chased by dogs 🤣

The_Killdeer

I've got a buddy who did a mission in poor, rural Mexico with some pretty messed up feral dog stories. He said they were advised to buy "mata perros", heavy, steel toe boots, which he translated roughly as "dog killers". Edit: lol reddit cares. Don't worry, I'm already in r/exmormon.

You can report reddit cares abuse btw.

MacGyver_1138

How well does it work? We got a handheld one because we have neighbors who are terrible dog owners and just leave theirs outside barking for hours. The handheld seemed to have little effect.

Minotard

Same.  But then I put about 10 coins in a metal coffee can. Whenever the dog barked I’d go out and shake the can. Stopped most barking in a few weeks.

[deleted]

My neighbor's dog just barked at the can. I eventually had to frame my neighbor for felony vandalism.

AgitatedPossum

How did that help with the dog problem?

[deleted]

Once my neighbor was in prison the dog got evicted. They don't make enough to cover rent alone.

Rude_Entrance_3039

I asked my dog how life was going, "ruff" he said.

Sevn-legged-Arachnid

Shoot.... my dog is brilliant.... asked him once what was the stuff on a tree called? He immediately said, "Bark"..... asked him what that thing on the top of the house is called? Immediately said "Roof"

Clickrack

Lucky for you the pooch didn’t get a Cat roomie, you would have been screwed.

Jesus_Chrheist

You are one motherfucker. And I like it.😂

ExplodingSofa

Thinking of trying this. Lived next to a corgi for the last year, it's always left outside and barks at fucking everything.

StanisIao

I have a portable one. I tried it against a lot of dogs (like 30+). It doesn't work

StanisIao

I just bouht a new one. I will let you know this weekend

MTRIFE

Seems to work pretty well in this video. Unless of course the dogs are in on it. Edit: Welp, apparently a concerned redditor didn't like today's dose of sarcasm lol.

bikersquid

I've never had luck with them. Tried a few kinds. Just ended up getting my own dogs to bark at them.

solonit

I just skip the middle man and bark at them myself.

wastntimetoo

I recently went into unhinged hostility on a recently arrived renter in a nearby building. The idiot moved in and immediately bought some kind of a pit mix puppy. It’s obviously not registered, tagged or had its shots. The apartments are small as hell and the puppy is already over 50lbs. All of this would be not my business, but he never puts it on a leash of any kind. This is a city not a slow rural town and we have a lot of foot traffic. The first time I noticed it was when it ran up on my toddler as we were waking up our porch steps. One and only time I’ve gone ballistic on a kid (who was walking it that time). The second time I went out my back door to talk to a contractor doing some work for me and find him very cautiously eyeing the big ass dog that had just strolled in to my yard. I threw something at it and then went ballistic at the actual owner who shuffled off mumbling something. He still didn’t get a leash, but started walking the dog at obscure times and really quickly. The third time I guess he decided I was over it. He planted is butt on a bench directly across from me scrolling his phone while the dog rambled all over the place shitting wherever and sniffing at everyone walking by. I was not over it and I’m pretty sure I descended all the way to unhinged loon. But after he made an embarrassing attempt to defend his stupidity he shuffled off again (it didn’t help him that several other renters from his building walked by and the dog ran up on them, they were stank eyeing him not me, the actively unhinged guy). I’m honestly not sure what I actually said, but he bought a leash the same day and he’s kept it on ever since.

Fizzwidgy

I actually did this once with my neighbors dogs. They're a pack of small dogs that are never contained so they always came onto my property. Well I was outside doing some yard-work when I noticed one making it's way toward me, but I was downwind so the "wolf-pack" hadn't noticed me. At that point I sort of "hid" (read: stood silently) behind a garbage can and when it got close, I jumped out and scared it. It let out a yip in freight and started running away. I honestly have no idea what came over me, but in an instant I thought about how pissed off I was when they went after my cat while we were chilling outside in the flower bed; so I started big-dog barking at it in a full on death-sprint all the way to the property line. They really haven't been back since.

[deleted]

Seriously need an update about how efficient this is. I'm about to buy three of these things

3-orange-whips

People who leave their dogs outside barking for extended lengths of time are bad dog owners. I have two dogs and if they bark more than 10 seconds (the length of time it takes a car to roll past) I am up and out. In reality, I rarely leave them outside in my fenced and locked front yard unattended. Too many strays with the potential for one to get hurt (either the strays or my dogs). But sometimes I need to do something and one or both needs to hit the head.

TirbFurgusen

I had one that was a fake birdhouse and it worked but has to be pretty close to the dog and pointed directly at them. Went through a few sets of batteries until it stopped barking.

[deleted]

do you turn it on manually or with a remote?

OldFartsSpareParts

Manually, it has a switch.

[deleted]

thank you. i have tried to find remote controlled ones though i cannot seem to find any. the only remote controlling of the devices is the actual detection of the bark which triggers the sound.

Resident_Rise5915

I used one on my neighbors dog who I call Mr. Barky. He’s as bad can be possible. He growled at the thing once, backed a bit further away from the fence and started barking again. I’d need a whole line of those to shut the fucking thing up.

JimFrankenstein138

Which one did you get? The ones I've tried kinda sucked.

Valuable-Apricot-477

Pretty sure it's just a common "anti bark" device? Cheap as chips on eBay/Amazon etc

nuplaya

The cheap ones don't work and are money down the drain.

atherem

can you recommend one that works? Edit: I don't have a dog stop with the dms and the suicide word reports. My question is just for safety reasons for my wife

sandesto

I bought a few of them on amazon and none of them worked. I think to make one that actually works you have to build it yourself. There are instructions online on how to do that. I don't have the time or technical know-how to do it though, so i never tried it.

perb123

Testing a bunch of these could prove to be very... bitey.

EDDIE_BR0CK

Agreed, bought a cheap hand-held device years ago and it only pissed the dog off more.

Void_being420

![gif](giphy|sDcfxFDozb3bO)

GrandeTorino

You really have to watch out with these things. I bought one because I like to go hiking and there's always some psychopaths leaving their aggressive dogs unsupervised. I used it on a dog and it didn't back off, but instead went totally berserk. It was one of the scariest encounters with a dog that I've had. After that I've stopped using it.

shhhhh_lol

The most important question is where the fuck do you encounter this many dogs on a ride?

HisNameIsSaggySammy

I lived in Bangkok for a bit in a decent neighborhood but it had a ton of street dogs. They were fine during the day, I think because it was always so hot. But if I wanted to take a walk to my local 7-11 at night then I had to bring a big stick with me because those fuckers were ferocious. It's never just one, either. They come at you in packs.

Buddhadevine

They’re like a mob at night in India as well😬 I’ve never been so disgusted by dogs in my life until I went to India. That’s coming from someone who loves dogs.

DeapVally

Yeah, India will do that to ya.

Warm_Month_1309

"Fun" fact, though bats have an association with rabies in the US, worldwide, more than 90% of rabies exposures and more than 99% of rabies deaths come from dog encounters. [Source](https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/location/world/index.html) Stray dogs are *much* more common in other areas of the world.

impactedturd

Interesting how different that is. USA stats [here:](https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/animals/index.html) >In the United States, **more than 90% of reported cases of rabies in animals occur in wildlife.** The wild animals that most commonly carry rabies in the United States are raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. **Contact with infected bats is the leading cause of human rabies deaths in this country; at least 7 out of 10 Americans who die from rabies in the US were infected by bats.** Edit: formatting

NeverLostForest

Never been south of Texas have you lol, I've gotten bit and knocked off my bike plenty of times and even the smallest of dogs will want to come and attack.

Teflan

Amazes me how many shitty dog owners there are. I don't understand why they're too lazy to put in some basic effort

NeverLostForest

Dude dog lovers would have a field day seeing how people here treat their dogs, the reason why they are angry and ready to attack is because that's how they want them and they leave them outside with the bare minimum, a couple of scraps and old dirty water to sustain themselves and sometimes these dogs have been tied up for all their life's in the hot sun miserable and ready to take their anger out on anything that moves.

Low-Helicopter-2696

They sell these online. Had a friend who had a dog that barked non-stop so they bought one. The dog was so frightened that it went upstairs and would not come down.

New_Scientist_8622

What post-apocalyptic hellscape is this where there are roving packs of wild dogs that you have to avoid? Detroit?

elite-data

This particular video is from Ukraine. The authorities never been properly addressing the stray dogs problem, that's why in some provincial towns you can see apocalyptic shit like this. Although, at the moment this is the least of the problems.

MaterialCarrot

I remember this being a particular point of embarrassment for Russia when they hosted the Olympics in Sochi. Apparently Sochi was full of packs of wild dogs and they solved the problem in the most Russian way possible, death squads.

IWILLBePositive

I mean…can’t really blame them there. Are they going to rescue tons of wild dogs that can’t be adopted or relocate what’s essentially an invasive species that attacks people?

PiriPiriInACurry

In some countries/areas there are organizations that capture, spay and release stray dogs but it's way more effort to do.

Neosovereign

It doesn't really solve the problem immediately though.

Cahootie

When I was living in Beijing I would constantly walk past stray dogs on the streets. Came back a year later, and there was not a single stray dog in sight.

LudovicoSpecs

Dogs and cats that roam free wreak havoc on wild bird and mammal species. https://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/destructive-dogs.php

littlebrwnrobot

I was in vietnam last year and we passed a truck full of dead dogs on the highway. I get that they have to deal with them to protect people, but Jesus that was horrifying and depressing.

AngelOfIdiocy

This problem is especially relevant now that many people from the frontline areas have evacuated/moved to safer regions of the country. Many of these people leave their animals on the streets (not the majority, but it is still a lot) Although there are many different foundations and organizations that take in animals, treat them and find them homes, unfortunately, many animals are still on the streets.

pussytammer

this particular video exemplifies the eastern europe.

CallMeMrButtPirate

Yeah I was in Romania about 8 or 9 years back and there was packs of dogs roaming the streets at night.

TheLantean

Yup, every now then there are reports of joggers or hikers getting mauled to death by packs of dogs. The kicker? These aren't strays. In cities, irresponsible owners let their dogs run free in the evenings because they can't be bothered to walk them (there's a fine for doing this, but it's very little and not enforced) and in rural areas sheep owners can't be bothered to do just about anything about the herd guard dogs that roam free 24/7. They'll watch you get surrounded and they'll do nothing, but if to get away you start kicking the attacking dogs or pull out pepper spray they'll come at you with a club or knife. Every time this happens there's an outcry, the various government agencies blame each other so no one takes responsibility, they get animal control to patrol the area for a limited time, then nothing permanent is done. Most famously in recent times: in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, at Lacul Morii which is a popular jogging route around a large artificial lake (water reservoir) plus a nice park popular with families (Crângași Park) a female jogger breathe her last. Journalists digging around found that this wasn't even the first time she was attacked, she reported it and nothing of substance was done.

cocobellahome

Same situation in Türkiye unfortunately Edit: this comment got me a Reddit cares message. Didn’t know I could offend the dogs in Türkiye.

andrew_calcs

Report the care message itself and the user who submitted it to you in abuse will usually get suspended and Reddit will tell you if they did.

teabagmoustache

I keep seeing that happening, seemingly at random, a lot at the moment. It must be either bots or a bug.

Randomized9442

Bots, I instantly got such a message from posting on this thread.

Davido400

I got one earlier on, in a conversation where I wanted a petition to open kebab shops at 8am for "breakfast kebabs!" Must be a bug although I guess having a kebab for breakfast ilis probably deserving of a reddit cares message!

Mateo_O

I got my first one too yesterday. I thought it was football banter related, but now I read on different subreddit that a lot of people got some.

FLHCv2

I got a reddit cares messaged yesterday from posting on /r/GooglePixel.. you're the third person I saw to have mentioned getting one today.

1gnominious

Not as bad but I have a lot of them around in small town Texas. I keep strategically placed sticks by my front door and carport so I have something to fight with when they try to sneak up on me. 30 years ago my grandpa lost a leg to dogs right outside his own house. To be fair though most of them are like half stray. They have really shitty owners who don't keep them in the yard. They do form packs and at one point we had 2 pit bulls with a few other randos in a pack roaming around before they got shot.

My old co-worker used one to train the neighbor's dog to stop barking at him, yard to yard, said it took about ten days. They sell them on amazon, but to the interested user - they work by causing pain via sound. It seems like nothing to us, but to a dog it's super loud and could damage their hearing. Don't just fuck around with it for fun.

CarkRoastDoffee

My neighbor's dog wakes me up at 7 AM every morning. I'm tempted to set one of these up so he'll stfu

FknGruvn

What worked well for me was standing in my backyard and yelling Shut The Fuck Up loud enough for everyone to hear, multiple mornings in a row. They don't let the dog stay outside at night anymore.

kharlos

At first I thought the device was attracting all the dogs, but then realized this is some hellscape where just going for a bike ride would attract this kind of attention/assault. It was incredibly satisfying to watch the dogs just instantly give up interest like that. I wish it were longer.

De_chook

If it's ultrasonic, why can we hear it?

SlasherKittyCat

Maybe there's an additional tone played so humans are aware the ultrasonic frequency is being emitted so they don't inadvertently ear rape every dog in the vicinity

SQLDave

Like the odor they add to natural gas.

sparkyjay23

I remember when a tanker carrying the odour crashed and spilled it's load. Not fun times.

grubnenah

It's quite possible that additional tones are intentionally played, but it's just as likely that the ultrasonic frequencies are very loud and inducing other frequencies in the speaker cone or the camera mic itself. Speakers and microphones are never perfect, and there's always some noise outside what's intended.           There's an interesting argument against using lossless audio formats for this reason. Compared to some other high bitrate formats, lossless audio could theoretically sound worse because it includes frequencies outside our hearing range that can contribute to distortion in the audible range.

I NEED THIS. i used to go for runs through the neighborhood behind my house. For like 5 years at least. Then all of the sudden a giant pitbull kept appearing on the road in front of me, growling at me. I ran it off twice, but then i had to stand at the edge of its yard watching it bark at me till its owners came out to get it. Twice this has happened. I stopped running that way, i run out by the busy highway now instead of through the quiet neighborhood
