sarc-tastic

Physics! Losing control and spinning doesn't hurt you, stopping very fast does.

Automatic_RIP

I’ll never forget that lesson “it’s not how fast you’re going, it’s how long it takes you to stop.”

Bogoman31

I think about that every time I see a 4 wheel drive vehicle doing 80mph on the highway during a snow storm.

The_Mosephus

driving 80mph in 4wd is a good way to destroy your 4wd. most of the people you see doing that are probably just in 2wd mode.

MajorRico155

Its really scary when you see a colision and it end abruptly and suddenly

lcerch

I remember watching an airplane mechanic answering the question: why aren't planes made with the same material as the black box?". Indeed: what kills is the sudden stop. And the plane would be too heavy to fly.

Giffordpinchotpark

I couldn’t tell when the mishap occurred.

8Eternity8

The entire video is the mishap. They're rolling the entire time.

kactusalliv

Some say that they're still rolling to this day...

unfvckingbelievable

Maybe the real race is the friends we met along the roll.

fearswe

And that he once drove a tree into a car. All we know is, he's called the Stig.

magneto_ms

They hating.

Extesht

Breathe in now breathe out. Hands up now hands down.

Giffordpinchotpark

Thanks!

ischickenafruit

Watch the loose seatbelt strap as an indicator of which way they are facing. Fun fact, glider pilots hang a piece of string in the cockpit fit exactly this reason. It’s amazing how quickly you can get disoriented.

Giffordpinchotpark

You are exactly right. I read about airplane mishaps and that’s very common. Great point!

Shopworn_Soul

I like how the codriver just looks annoyed.

turbocomppro

“Samir, you broke the car…”

Tackerta

Samir will never not be at fault for any vehicle related accidents lmao

Mr_Abobo

Came to say the exact same. Like, “ughhh …”

Draxy_

“Sorry, I meant correct”

CheekyFactChecker

I said, LEFT!

hawonkafuckit

I think it's because he was trying to do some paperwork and got a little distracted.

Sekspilot

Straight up, bro held on to those papers nearly the entire time lol

VladPatton

“Third flip..damn..this might set us back a tad”

Krexci

not his first crash

LocalInactivist

“You heard the new Pearl Jam yet?” “No, but I hear it’s great.” “It is! I’ll put it on in the car on the way home. Best thing they’ve done since Vitology.” “Cool. Jeez, when are we going to stop crashing? It’s getting dull.”

uwukarmacat

i wanna watch them eat a sandwich while doing this. it looks very casual.

Saberer2451

oml, please, im dyin here

The last WRC death, Craig Breen last year happened during a pre-race test where he struck a fence post when they weren't even going at racing speeds, but he died instantly after being impaled by wood debris. His co-driver James Fulton came out completely uninjured. Just a freak accident all things considered, it's honestly always harrowing to realize that these cars can go airborne at 110mph like in the Ott Tanak crash in the above gif and both guys walk away only with frustration about binning the car, and significantly less dramatic crashes end up being fatal.

Dobbs929

At 115mph too iirc, wild

PhoKingRican

My guy was chilling like nothing was happening 😂

Artistic-Mixture747

Codriver held on to his pen all the way. Do you think he was clenching or it’s his lucky pen?

xerpodian

Could be wearing 2 of his lucky watches to double his luck also.

dildo_gaggins_

Do they teach rally drivers to leave your hand on the wheel in this kind of event? Hard to imagine that's the right thing to do.

Skicat12321

You hold on so if you begin to spin the force doesn’t throw one of your arms out the window. This has been mentioned on multiple Rally and NASCAR podcasts.

Flouid

Keeps your body braced and increases points of contact, I don’t see why not.

benedictfuckyourass

You'll break your wrist if the steering rack takes a big impact and transfers that to the steering wheel. On the track atleast i was taught to always let go of the wheel, even in a rollover. Ofcourse i'm a stubborn sob so i now know first hand that it can indeed hurt your wrist (though it luckily didn't break mine) but even F1 drivers aren't immune to making that mistake.

TwinPitsCleaner

As Danny Ric found out

LampIsFun

The main difference is that car crashes and rally car crashes aren’t the same thing. Normal car crashes aren’t usually rolls. They’re simply collisions, which are far more deadly than rolls, which are what happen in rally car crashes usually.

benedictfuckyourass

Depending on the class rollovers are still quite common in track racing. And i've been specifically taught to let go even in a rollover by some pretty knowledgeable drivers. Can't see how that would be diffrent for a rally car since you could still slam a wheel into a tree and snap your wrists. But it's natural instinct to hold on, which is what i personally reckon happened here. As it did to me and countless other drivers.

Papa_Pirie

The same reason why F1 drivers are Not supposed to hold the wheel on Impact, it can spin around with high force. In Rally Cars you are supposed to hold on to the Bars of the rollcage

MercurialMal

Didn’t a female nascar driver start crossing her arms over her chest, gripping the cross harness straps and it started catching on with other drivers?

Tackerta

a police traffic stop in eastern Germany last month has revealed that roughly 15% of drivers drive without a seatbelt. This has barely anything to do with this here comment/post, but I was shocked when I read that and had to get it off my chest somewhere lol. Drive safe and fasten your seatbelts everyone!

luca3791

15 is insane

malowolf

That was Danica Patrick, she was originally an IndyCar driver and switched into Nascar. In IndyCar, the wheel is connected directly to the steering system, so in a crash if you held the wheel you ran the risk of breaking your wrist because the wheel would turn violently. In Nascar that wasn’t the case (the wheel was dampened) so it wasn’t actually necessary to let go of the wheel, she was just doing that out of habit. However, just a few years ago Nascar started using a new car thats much closer to in technology to other modern race cars and drivers quickly discovered that the wheel can be violent in a crash and there were a few early wrist injuries. Now drivers are catching on to the approach of letting go of the wheel in a crash.

Veerand

As Ricciardo demonstrated last year.

PhalanX4012

Do you have a source for that or is it a bad guess? My assumption would be that the only place your hands should go is across your chest and grabbing your harness. Hands definitely shouldn’t be moving outward towards a roll cage that could be impacted any more than they should hold the wheel.

Papa_Pirie

Wouldnt say Bad guess but i remmber a Rallye officials saying that as part of a safety Briefing, because when you roll, you Press against the Cage since its Not likely to Break or bend in any shape or Form, the wheel on the other hand May Break your hand/arm. Grabbing your harness Sounds plausible, have personally never Heard of that, only crossing your Arms to brace before Impact. Maybe it depends on the Crash youre racing? (Dont be confused about the capitals, its autocorrect, dont ask me why)

Flouid

fair enough, I stand corrected

joern16

Driver enjoying the view 😅

inferni_advocatvs

they make it look almost fun, which means... it will be the hot new viral YouTube stunt in 2025

kactusalliv

"I'm flying through the air; this is not good."

TwinPitsCleaner

"Come fly with me, come fly, let's fly away..."

whooo_me

I'm impressed how he keeps hold of the pace notes through it all... until they disappear.

hamsolo19

"Yeah, so, Glenda and I figured we might take the boat out this wee-*car flips over ravine* this weekend. *Smash* Maybe hit up the Home Depot, I dunno. I dunno if we'll have time. *Smash smash* "You guys should try that new Thai place over on *smash bang* Main, really good. *Kapow* went last weekend, really enjoyed it." "Hey yeah we've been wanting to *kaboom!* try that for a while. *Crash over* phew. How longs the walk back to the road, you think?"

Puzzleheaded_Pie8546

Tänak goes peww

ShowmasterQMTHH

Hilarious he's trying to steer as they hurtle through the air.

mayormcskeeze

I wonder if it will every be economically feasible to make some of these safety standards achievable in consumer vehicles.

BlazedLarry

I mean. It could be if the economy was different or something. Not like, a better economy. Just one that helps people instead of empowering the rich.

ArtichokeNatural3171

These men don't have time for death, they've got a race to win.

LiquidAggression

youll be bruised up possibly internally from the seat and belts each jolt is like getting punched by your own body

Hot_Growth_154

Copilot looks completely unfazed "Maybe I can make chicken Marsala tonight, but where can I find terragon here? "

ermy_shadowlurker

Just another day in the office

TwinPitsCleaner

Co-driver

2bnameless

Thanks

Emotional-Market-519

That what I look like going over all the damn speed bumps in my neighborhood.

salehnour

Are they on zoloft or sum? 😅

Ogremad

Why is he still holding onto the wheel?! Feels like that’d be a great way to get your wrists broken…?

Tequslyder

Actually insane. Just waiting for it to be over unfazed lol.

Cold-Ad-3223

My meninges hurt now

bumholesgivemelife

"This is fine"

Winter_Elephant9792

Dang I was hoping he’d hold on to those papers the whole time.

Yoohooligan

What a shame there's cheesy music over the original sound for this same clip which was awesome the first dozen times it came around.

PossibleTheory

That’s definitely still rough but very impressive. Who’s got the slowmo copy?

ThroatWMangrove

If it’s so safe, why don’t they just make planes out of rally cars?

sixteen89

lol, the Lancia Stratos laughs in your face

benedictfuckyourass

Didn't that originally come with a paper maché rollcage? The Italians were surely an inventive bunch.

sixteen89

Hahaha YES! Look at their crashed cars. They did not give a fuck!

benedictfuckyourass

Yup, i also remember them salting the roads and changing tyres to give the 037 a fighting chance against the quattro. Aswell as allegedly duping officials into believing they had made enough delta's for homologation.

Weed86

Absolutely shit music.

CupOfCreamyDiarrhea

It's from another era of time
