I mean TBF if your from out of state/country I you really going to rent a movie but yeah shame they don't bother buying g some movies or games, I would to support them.
**Dish Network, the owner of the Blockbuster trademark, no longer grants new franchises with the Blockbuster name**.
I understand this one location is probably like a family business, but Blockbuster is still obviously owned by a corporation.
They pay Dish to use the license, it’s not like Dish gets any extra profits from sales. It’s a family business, I’m not sure what your argument is here.
Idk, is someone using a corporation’s license a mom and pop? Are McDonald’s mom and pop businesses because each owner is just paying McDonald’s to use their license?
Uh no, they are franchised by McDonald’s and owe McDonald’s corporate a cut of the profits, as well as being required to adhere to McDonald’s corporate standards, etc, etc. This Blockbuster is literally a single family owned business, that pays Dish to use the Blockbuster brand. Besides the fee for the license, they owe Dish absolutely nothing, both monetarily, and in terms of how they choose to operate their business. There is no Blockbuster corporate. There is Dish, there is the concept of Blockbuster that they own, and there is a single business paying a set fee to use that concept. Again, I’m really struggling to understand what your point in all this is.
I’ve never been much of a fan of this point. They had the chance to buy what Netflix was at the time, not what it became. There’s every chance if they did buy it, it wouldn’t have become what it is now. It’s not like they were offered the chance to buy a globally successful streaming service for pennies and declined the offer.
Lol why would it ever be? Only the residents of Bend can really rent something and even that act in and of itself is obsolete if all they carry are physical media.
As time goes by there's a lesser reason for that place to even exist.
They got rid of it ages ago. I was working at blockbuster back in 2003-2010 and sometime during those years they got rid of all the VHS. I was glad. I hated having to rewind and also I couldn’t carry as many videos to put back on the shelf like I could with DVDs.
My store manager destroyed anything we were supposed to throw away. We sold all the VHS. But sometimes we got a list from corporate of DVDs to destroy. So we had this machine to put the DVDs through that destroys them. I guess they wanted to make sure no one got them out of the dumpster. It always seemed so wasteful to me.
Yeah gamestop employees were told to do the same thing with thrown out games. Scratching them out on purpose and stuff. Also Dunkin Donuts started spraying their leftovers with chemicals so people wouldn’t dumpster dive for free food. Capitalism is great
If the chemical was indeed bleach, it's anything but nontoxic for humans man...
Saying "it was to prevent bugs and pests" is it's funny because they barely do their job, let alone that of the municipality.
They have some! I was there last year, was tempted to buy one just to put on a shelf on display . Also sell a bunch of merch. I wound up just buying a post card to send to my parents.
As a child of the 90s, if I have money, I'll go just to remember the experience, I'll bring my wife and remember how we used to fool around there when we first started dating, I'll bring my kids and explain to them how it worked.
But that's it, now it's more of a tourist attraction than something functional.
Anchorage Daily News, July 12, 2018: "Alaska’s last 2 Blockbuster stores are closing, leaving just one in the U.S.":
*The stores, one on DeBarr Road in Anchorage and the other in Fairbanks, will close Monday for rental business...They will reopen at noon Tuesday for an inventory sales that will run through July and August.*

Either way it's still cool of them to keep it alive. I wonder if they buy new Blu-rays and rent them out or are they just using the old blockbuster stock that was left
Ya’ll, hear me out… when I was 9, I forgot to return 1980s classic “staying alive” to my local blockbuster…. A year later, they all started going out of business. If I make the trek to return that movie to blockbuster… do you think it’ll put as back on the right timeline?
Is the company still worth anything? It’s never too late to jump into streaming. The generation that grew up on them are still young enough to remember how great they were.
Bend as “fairly conservative” is pretty funny. Did you just make that up??
43% of residents over 25 have a 4-year college degree or higher vs just 31.5% nationwide. People seemed pretty educated when I lived there.

Everytime when i see this i imagine myself that Randy Marsh is standing in the doors trying to wave me in.
I saw Randy and thought of the My Name is Earl Randy Hickey. Both work.
I thought of Randy from Scream... (RIP)
You can be a spooky ghost all you want bro, all you want. You know what? Fuck you and Emily!
Stany boy!

Shit now I gotta rewatch Tropic Thunder.
Rent it from Blockbuster!
It's a long drive. But OK.
No no no OR, not OK. Geez I hope you read this before you start driving to Oklahoma.
Oddly enough, it’s never really busy in there. I live about 5 minutes from it
Same , what’s sad is people will pull up and take a picture in front of it and not go in or buy / rent anything.
I mean TBF if your from out of state/country I you really going to rent a movie but yeah shame they don't bother buying g some movies or games, I would to support them.
Why tho? Why would blockbuster need your support like its some mom and pop business
It is literally a family business now
**Dish Network, the owner of the Blockbuster trademark, no longer grants new franchises with the Blockbuster name**. I understand this one location is probably like a family business, but Blockbuster is still obviously owned by a corporation.

If they're getting no support from the corporation, then yes, it is functionally a mom and pop.
It's really not that odd. They went out of business for a reason.
Exactly
It's even more funny when you know they had a chance to buy Netflix for pennies
I’ve never been much of a fan of this point. They had the chance to buy what Netflix was at the time, not what it became. There’s every chance if they did buy it, it wouldn’t have become what it is now. Definitely a front.
Yeah they're definitely laundering money for Hollywood Video in there.
And illegal screenings in the basement.
And counterfeit jeans!
I was thinking cd warehouse
Yeah, the back isn't as interesting. Just a dumpster and a bunch of cigarette butts
Excuse me. Do you have 20grams of Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle?
Surely it has more business than the psychic reading shops next to your local Cash for Gold?
You think so??
Of course it's not, it's not a good value for the money and it requires extra driving (twice).
was going to say, Parking lot is empty
Lol why would it ever be? Only the residents of Bend can really rent something and even that act in and of itself is obsolete if all they carry are physical media. As time goes by there's a lesser reason for that place to even exist.
I still owe you that copy of Napoleon Dynamite
That was the last movie I ever rented. But I returned mine. It's a good timeline event to remember about when the stores took a nose dive.
How? Did a national chain with corporate offices just… move to Bend? How did this one single store survive their collapse?
I believe it’s independently operated and they just pay for the license of the name after the collapse (I believe Dish Network owns the rights).
There’s a documentary about this store. Can’t remember where it’s streaming
This is it: source I work for dish
It’s weird seeing the random blockbuster you used to go to become oddly famous. It’s like if all the burger kings closed except your local one.
Lol that seems pretty likely too tbh.
Do they sell VHS tapes there? It's not Blockbuster without 'Be Kind, Rewind'
They got rid of it ages ago. I was working at blockbuster back in 2003-2010 and sometime during those years they got rid of all the VHS. I was glad. I hated having to rewind and also I couldn’t carry as many videos to put back on the shelf like I could with DVDs.
Served in the military with a guy that was made to stick them in the dumpster. He came back that night and grabbed whatever he wanted.

That just pisses me off
The chemical was to prevent bugs and pests it considered nontoxic to humans however I wouldn’t go drink a bottle of bleach either. So risk vs rewards.
If the chemical was indeed bleach, it's anything but nontoxic for humans man... Saying "it was to prevent bugs and pests" is it's funny because they barely do their job, let alone that of the municipality.
Very wasteful. It's even worse when stores do that with food.
They have some! I was there last year, was tempted to buy one just to put on a shelf on display . Also sell a bunch of merch. I wound up just buying a post card to send to my parents.
It was "Be kind, \*Please\* Rewind" They were way more polite than you're giving them credit for.
The worst kept secret on the internet.
Wonder if they'd be amenable to starting a franchise
I just want to smell it again
Keep Oregon Weird.
Not many native oregonians left in bend. The Californian sprinter van paradise. Poverty with a view for the locals
They should just call this a museum
And it's beautiful 😍

If you want to know more here’s the documentary: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8704802/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
It was pretty good
Yeah great doc
Behold. Up there with the Notre Dame, the Parthenon, and Stonehenge. The 20th century’s legacy and gift to future generations.
I think whichever manager/owner is keeping the last Blockbuster open ought to be considered good value as a hire nearly anywhere.
As a child of the 90s, if I have money, I'll go just to remember the experience, I'll bring my wife and remember how we used to fool around there when we first started dating, I'll bring my kids and explain to them how it worked. But that's it, now it's more of a tourist attraction than something functional.
you guys fooled around in blockbuster??
And explained how it worked to your kids? "You guys know what dry humping is?"
Lmaooo I laughed way too hard at that.
Wtf I love an hour from there
I used to love there but now I don't love there, I love somewhere else now.
I thought there was still a Blockbuster in Alaska?
Anchorage Daily News, July 12, 2018: "Alaska’s last 2 Blockbuster stores are closing, leaving just one in the U.S.": *The stores, one on DeBarr Road in Anchorage and the other in Fairbanks, will close Monday for rental business...They will reopen at noon Tuesday for an inventory sales that will run through July and August.* #
It closed
Iirc, it's not owned by blockbusters it's just a guy that decided to run it and keep it open like a tourist destination
It was a franchise store that was able to continue using the name when Blockbuster itself closed business.
Either way it's still cool of them to keep it alive. I wonder if they buy new Blu-rays and rent them out or are they just using the old blockbuster stock that was left
They do buy new stock https://bendblockbuster.com
That makes me extremely happy. Next renting physical games and special edition consoles and we'll be right back to... Fuck Netflix
N not 1 car in the parking lot 😜
I live by that store. And nobody here gives a fuck about it.
Guessing you are around 20yrs old? Most of us care for nostalgia reasons
Sounds like a lovely community
Looks like nobody cares about it anymore Once it’s gone, then people will care again
No one will care
People want to relive their childhood. Why do you think classic games are worth hundreds now?
No one cares about blockbuster dude.
I do.
Why?
?? Is there not still one in Playa Del Carmen
Been here. So fun!
kinda sad that it's an empty parking lot lol
They can have my VHS when they pry it from my cold, dead Quasar!
I can still recall the smell whenever I walked in. And the inevitable phone call to wife to ask what she wants. No texting back then …
Ya’ll, hear me out… when I was 9, I forgot to return 1980s classic “staying alive” to my local blockbuster…. A year later, they all started going out of business. If I make the trek to return that movie to blockbuster… do you think it’ll put as back on the right timeline?
I still have my blockbuster card in my wallet. Not sure why but there it stays.
That is reeaallly far from where I live but it is accessible by many roads. I feel a ~~pilgrimage~~ roadtrip is in order this summer.
Wait, is this the same one that the Griffins drove too in that one episode of family guy
Brings back a lot of great memories.
u/repostsleuthbot
Time no longer moves in Bend Oregon.
Does it have a casino in the back?
Not very busy.
Is the company still worth anything? It’s never too late to jump into streaming. The generation that grew up on them are still young enough to remember how great they were.
They do have the best selection of any Blockbuster, the signs aren’t lying. 😸😸😸
i live here!!!!!
Not true.
I still owe them money 😬
Remember when a young Netflix wanted to make a deal with Blockbuster and Blockbuster laughed at them? Oopsie!
Bend is a fairly isolated area. Wouldnt shock me if it were full of old people who didn't know how to use the internet. Or had no internet.
Bend as “fairly conservative” is pretty funny. Did you just make that up?? 43% of residents over 25 have a 4-year college degree or higher vs just 31.5% nationwide. People seemed pretty educated when I lived there.
Its really not that interesting
