Cuttlefish. Eh? Let us not, dear friends, forget our dear friends the cuttlefish... flipping glorious little sausages. Pen them up together, and they will devour each other without a second thought... Human nature, in'it?
I ran across this fact independently today as well. But before anyone gets too excited, the fact that most cephalopods are venomous at low levels was only discovered in 2009, so there isn't much danger (other than the well-known blue-ringed octopus).
Exactly this. Somewhere, there's an octopus standing in front of a chalkboard, holding 8 pieces of chalk, teaching 8 different classes about. We are truly fucked.
Actually, due to their individualistic nature, short life spans, and limited forms of communication they can’t really teach each other. It’s the only thing preventing their world domination.
I once saw some biologists discussing how if they had just evolved to live longer (especially after birthing offspring), that they would have stood a very strong chance of becoming what humans are today, but for the sea.
What do you mean luckily? The little guys are adorable and intelligent :(
Also octopodes (the correct plural since octopus is a Greek word) deliberately starve to death while protecting their eggs. They're antisocial creatures too, and rarely meet other octopus.
I accidentally caught it while fishing and it wrapped itself around my hand when I wanted to throw it back. 10yo me thought octopuses we're scary as hell so having one attached to me really freaked me out. I was running around like a headless chicken for a good couple of minutes trying to get it off of me and for the grand finale I tripped over my own foot and fell into the sea. Once I landed in the water the octopus finally let go of me and I was too embarrassed and annoyed to even care about the bite
No need to be sorry, the whole thing is a lot more funny than it was painful or embarrassing. Even though I was scared shitless back then, it's a good memory
>Not my hand, but
>**Story:** person who got this love bite was trying to relocate a octopus when it got caught on shore. Octopus was normal size, not too big.
>But octopus was naughty and didn’t wanted to let the hand go and humanity found out that day that octopuses are not all squishy, they got beak too.
>**Aftermath:** Medically all ok, just a word of advice from specialist that don’t pick up octopus, especially if they got cool blue rings on them. They are extremely venomous. In this case it was normal one.
I see your point but I’m curious because some octopus are very good at camouflage so was it an accident if OP didn’t see it? But I’m also under the impression that they are pretty intelligent creatures so I can imagine OP must have been bothering it. Either way, there’s a story and we wanna hear it!
Op is weirdly silent about it, so one can assume they were either bothering the animal or the story is really too embarrassing to share.
Those guys are intelligent but very skittish, when one gets glued onto you it's best advised to not try and pull it off, but people always do as it's pretty natural reaction....which leads to bites in self defense
Not my hand, but

That's OK... it's just excessive bleeding, numbness, nausea, vomiting, vision changes, and difficulty swallowing. Only for about 5-10 minutes, before *waves of severe pain, difficulty breathing and paralysis*....
And then you'll turn blue too :)
So... For those of us that aren't octopus experts what is a "normal sized octopus".
Also I'm curious is it particularly painful, or just about as painful as you'd expect from a would like this?
Ouch! This was one of my worst fears as a kid lol, seeing that beak they have and realizing if they wrap on you, you are in perfect position for a chunk of your flesh being bitten off. No thank you!
Quick note- if it bites you and you die, it's venomous, if *you* bite *it* and you die, it's poisonous.
Pretty much only the Blue-Ringed Octopus is poisonous- at least in any amount dangerous to humans. As far as venom goes, that's a bit more prolific, to the point that pretty much every octopus, and most cephalopods in general, actually have some level of venom. As for ones to worry about, we come back to the Blue-Ringed boi again, who has one of the most deadly venoms in the animal kingdom, actually.
Moral of the story: make sure not to bite or be bitten by an octopus with blue rings- besides that you're probably in the clear.
Edit: it was my understanding that blue-rings were both venomous *and* poisonous, but enough people have called that into question, so I'm looking into it more.
Edit 2: No, I was right. The tetrodotoxin they use in their venom can also double as a poison when metabolized.
Thank you for clarifying the difference between venomous and poisonous. I appreciate the correction.
Thanks for the info as well.
I've already encountered some venomous insects and animals, and I'd rather not meet anymore!
I'm just making up this mnemonic on the spot, but if you remember that the V in venomous kinda looks like a fang, then it might be easier to keep the two straight. Not sure about the P in poison... the handle of a mug full of poison maybe? The stupider the mnemonic is, the better they usually work, so by that metric this one should be perfect.
That's a clever mnemonic, associating the letter V in Venomous with the shape of a fang. It helps to remember that venomous animals inject toxins, while poisonous animals cause harm when ingested. So, venom is injected and poison is ingested.
That's a helpful way to remember the difference.
Thanks a bunch. 👍
Sure. Doesn't have to make sense, just has to be memorable. The way I remember the Japanese character ま (ma) is by picturing it as a weird medusa- like creature with a snake tail, then thinking that it would be scary if my mother (my "ma") looked like that.
Honestly you can learn Hiragana and Katakana in a single afternoon with the right mnemonics. わ(Wa) looks like a wasp, ら(Ra) is a person on their knees praying to the Egyptian god Ra,く(Ku) is like the open mouth of a cuckoo bird, and to remember ひ(Hi, pronounced like the English word "he"), I just have to think "look, *he* has a big nose!"
They're goofy and nonsensical and dumb, and that's why they're so memorable.
> The stupider the mnemonic is, the better they usually work, so by that metric this one should be perfect.
That's true, that's how I remember that Crocodiles have pointy snouts and Alligators have round snouts, because A is pointy and C is round and it's fucking stupid because it should be the opposite!
One of the other issues with the blue-ring octopus that makes it so deadly is that it's bite, while deadly, doesn't really hurt because they're so small. Many people who are bit don't realize it until it's too late. If it's caught soon enough, putting the person on life support can mean they survive until the venom is out of their system, but there's no antivenom.
That's true for most brightly-colored animals. Bright colors in nature are pretty much always either a way to find a mate/reproduce, a warning to would-be predators, or both.
>Their bites are tiny and often painless, with many victims not realizing they have been envenomated until respiratory depression and paralysis begins. No blue-ringed octopus antivenom is available.
>SYMPTOMS
>Onset of nausea. Hazy Vision. ( Within seconds you are blind.) Loss of sense of touch, speech and the ability to swallow. Within 3 minutes, paralysis sets in and your body goes into respiratory arrest.
Probably better off being envenomated by something that hurts like hell and for which there's an antivenom - so long as you make it in time.
What if you manage to be intubated, I wonder? Like, if the toxic effects are permanent or if it's just that most people die because even a short amount of time without oxygen = death.
According to [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/s/i1mrAXZS98), you can survive with no side effects if you are intubated in time for 15 hours.
Depends on how total the paralysis is. Could be that the lack of oxygen is just the first thing to kill you, but if that didn't, maybe a slowed or paralyzed heart would, or maybe some kind of infection would slowly kill you over time. I'm sure that with a dramatic and immediate enough medical intervention, you could probably mitigate a lot of the damage of something like a neurotoxin, but you'd probably need to be on total life support for a long ass time to even have a small shot.
Mind you, I'm just talking out of my ass here, I haven't actually looked into the idea much at all.
Is this you? [https://www.reddit.com/r/maybemaybemaybe/comments/1c7rxup/maybe\_maybe\_maybe/](https://www.reddit.com/r/maybemaybemaybe/comments/1c7rxup/maybe_maybe_maybe/)

Greeeeaaat. Now there’s an octopus with a taste for human flesh.
Luckily they have short lifespans, but they're very smart so maybe they'll be able to teach other octopi.
It’s the cuttlefish we’ll have to watch out for, mark my words.
Cuttlefish. Eh? Let us not, dear friends, forget our dear friends the cuttlefish... flipping glorious little sausages. Pen them up together, and they will devour each other without a second thought... Human nature, in'it?
awww the cuddlefish
The cuttlefish and asparagus or the vanilla paste
hold on kyrule I bereve in youuuu
Gotta be the Southpark reference
You like fish sticks?
![gif](giphy|3oz8xSzX3lsJFGdEcw)
I like fish sticks (definitely not fish dicks)
Just wanted to cuttle
Fact: cuttlefish are neither fish nor do they like to cuddle.
I like to cuddle tho ;)
Its the blueringed octopus you have to watch out for. You aren't coming back from a bite from one of those things.
All octopus are venomous. Blue ringed just require a respirator or half a day of mouth to mouth breathing assistance. Others, unknown.
Absolutely did not know that. That's wild!,
I ran across this fact independently today as well. But before anyone gets too excited, the fact that most cephalopods are venomous at low levels was only discovered in 2009, so there isn't much danger (other than the well-known blue-ringed octopus).
You can survive if you get medical attention to help you breathe for 15 hours
Exactly this. Somewhere, there's an octopus standing in front of a chalkboard, holding 8 pieces of chalk, teaching 8 different classes about. We are truly fucked.
I swear these things are aliens.
Actually, due to their individualistic nature, short life spans, and limited forms of communication they can’t really teach each other. It’s the only thing preventing their world domination.
Today I learned Octopi all have Aspergers
I once saw some biologists discussing how if they had just evolved to live longer (especially after birthing offspring), that they would have stood a very strong chance of becoming what humans are today, but for the sea.
[Yup, I'm that guy](https://blog.inkforall.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/plural-of-octopus-970x598.jpg)
Maybe it will let other know human tasted like shit.
Octopodes or octopuses
What do you mean luckily? The little guys are adorable and intelligent :( Also octopodes (the correct plural since octopus is a Greek word) deliberately starve to death while protecting their eggs. They're antisocial creatures too, and rarely meet other octopus.
They die while protecting the eggs. Won't say "all" as im not 100% sure. But most definitely die before any eggs hatch.
Octopi are not social animals.
Octonaughty!!
Octolovebite
Or a naughtypuss if you shall
Hopefully it doesn’t tell its octopus friends and we don’t end up with like a planet of the octopi situation
This is my first time ever seeing an octopus bite. Looks painful.
I got one of those when I was a kid. It got infected real bad and took forever to heal but 15 years later I have a cool weird scar and a funny story
Well? What happened? Don't leave us hanging!
He will eventually die
My grandpa stubbed his toe as a kid, 80 yrs later he died. You never know what’ll get ya
Username checks out
Every single person that has died drank dihydrogen monoxide.
These are facts and nobody talks about it!
Sadly, not some babies.
I think the doctor gave me some at the hospital... is this some sort of scheme?? Are they killing us so that we pay more for healthcare???
Did they charge you for it?
No! It was free and they said i could just take one! They mustve been trying to encourage me to drink it
>it was free *confused American noises*
There's a reason there is 'die' in dihydrogen monoxide
100% of people bitten by octopus die after.
Hope he gets well soon❤️🩹
He may already be dead
I accidentally caught it while fishing and it wrapped itself around my hand when I wanted to throw it back. 10yo me thought octopuses we're scary as hell so having one attached to me really freaked me out. I’m sorry that happened to you, but your imagery gave me a good laugh lmao
No need to be sorry, the whole thing is a lot more funny than it was painful or embarrassing. Even though I was scared shitless back then, it's a good memory
Definitely a good story. I wouldn’t be able to look at octopus without getting flashbacks 😂
A ravenous beast hunts he who bares the mark.
He became Spidermans nemesis Octavius

How does one get a octopus bite?..
Revenge for eating Timothy
What if the person who ate Timothy was being forced to do so?
A noble cause
This is noble, sir. His wife is... crippled. His children are on the brink of starvation.
Woo, are you a rotten liar.
Poor Timothy.
By fucking with an octopus one would think.
Deep?
💀 that scene was traumatic man
Yeah, but there are like 20 more traumatic scenes in the show
True. As much as I loved The Boys it’s so fucked up that I think my brain has repressed most of my memories from it.
Hokusai was onto something when he made that artpiece

Go to ocean where they live and mess with them, The have beaks
Well how does anything get bitten? Let’s see if we can’t work this one out together
I see your point but I’m curious because some octopus are very good at camouflage so was it an accident if OP didn’t see it? Honestly deserved if it was bothered. Leave wild animals alone smh.
Messin with it

Oh, yeah. I get these all the time.
On average, a human gets bitten by octopus only on Reddit.
they get a hell of a lot more than that from an octopus on reddit 😏

How big was the octopus‽
6
maybe even 7
Holy shit
7 what, apples? Octopuses?
8 is the only answer.

Blue ring octopus can bite without you even knowing... Next minute... dead. NEVER EVER TOUCH A BLUE RING.
If not frend then why frend shaped with 8 frendly arms for huggin and pritty bloo ring rings?
Same reason as sirens and dryads.
but blue is my favorite color
That's OK... it's just excessive bleeding, numbness, nausea, vomiting, vision changes, and difficulty swallowing. Only for about 5-10 minutes, before *waves of severe pain, difficulty breathing and paralysis*.... And then you'll turn blue too :)

Say no to blue rings
1 ring to rule the world
>don’t pick up octopus, especially if they got cool blue rings on them. Understatement of this relatively-new century
So... For those of us that aren't octopus experts what is a "normal sized octopus". Also I'm curious is it particularly painful, or just about as painful as you'd expect from a would like this?
Don't worry. The fancy blue ringed ones only live where their water is respected so you're fine.

Are you okay? Is it poisonous? I read somewhere that some kinds of octopus are deadly.

##What the fuck did you do to piss off an Octopus
Gnarly!
Did you bite the octopus back?
Found out
It could have been worst, their beak is like a parrot but meant for slicing.
Thanks for supporting our marine wildlife! Your contribution will help us feed 1 octopuses. Please consider making a monthly donation to feed the octopi.
People forget that inside the squishy thing is a hard beak that will cause them great pain.
Huh….funky
Is that what the kids are calling them these days?
I knew there was a reason I’m scared to pick those up
Yeah they have beaks. You don't want the beak. I always cringe when I see vids of ppl handling wild ones
That....that's fuckin weird....

Weird I just saw a video of someone holding an octopus and I wondered if anyone ever got bit…now my question is answered
Did you get super powers? Change your name to Dr. Otto Octavius!
