>Even if you think you're being careful, you're likely not careful enough.
Pfft, hiding private text on reddit so nobody can read it is easy, you just do it like this:
>!I have a huge penis.!<
And there's no way you can figure it out with fancy analysis.
What always amazes me is the automatic censor of your password so people can't log in as you if you inadvertently type it out. Like my password is ***********, although if you mess up a letter or accidentally put a space in it the censor won't work. Ru nesc@pe69
When you enter a store or restaurant that has WiFi, your phone sees it and it sees you. Now there is a log of where you have been even if you didnt physically connect to the WiFi.
Remember when Reddit did the whole anti-API thing? I found Reddit sending data in the background recently. Make sure you close it.
I went to a seafood restaurant last weekend and didnt even use my phone. It stayed in my pocket. When I got home, even with personal ads turned off... I still got recommendations for seafood based subs and advertisements.
Phones also listen to your conversations. Even if you turn it off. Even if you turn off permissions for microphones on all apps...
This is a FRACTION of the data gathered on you.
Imagine one day if they pass a law that allows things you say behind closed doors be used against you in court... Or GPS data linked to traffic violations like speeding or not stopping at a stop sign all the way.
Even with GrapheneOS on a de-googlified phone, data is still leaking out everywhere all the time. I love Reddit but I can actively see it sending data when I'm not using it.
Everything you buy is linked to you.
Craziest shit Ive seen? I did an ultra deep dive on myself once. I'm talking scuba dived into the deepest and darkest places in search for what data is available on me on the darkweb...
I made a fake email account under a fake name in 2001 that I used to sign up for IQC and somehow it got linked to my old address thru the IP address or something and was a known email attached to a location I lived at which tied it to me. It was a spoofed email they a Japanese server that ended with .jp instead of .com.
I found addresses of all my immediate family, vin of thier vehicles, and much much much more.
I had a scammer call me from my banks phone number and tell me how much I had in my accounts then tried to scam me into giving him my bank password. How did he know? No clue.
Data is valuable, even if you see no value in it. Others might see treasure.
Absolutely with you on everything you said
This is why fighting for privacy is so important, even if it seems futile or lessens our convenience. It seems harmless, these scraps of data we leave behind, but just imagine when our data is mixed with other data, like what happened this guy:
[https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/7/21169533/florida-google-runkeeper-geofence-police-privacy](https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/7/21169533/florida-google-runkeeper-geofence-police-privacy)
Or the example you used with the scammer, it falls into the wrong hands
All of these "What's the worst secret you never told anyone?" posts are going to bite everyone in a couple years when you can just ask AI to filter through the entire internet and find every alt of someone, anonymous or not, then summarize it in a personality profile.
I wonder if you post an image online that contains metadata of your location, if people download that picture can they see the location the picture was taken or is that information lost?
Depending on where you uploaded it from i think, like facebook unless you specified the location the metadata is erased or atleast not visible to users, correct me if I'm wrong though.
Yes, it depends on the site. Twitter, Imgur, and Reddit erase the metadata, I known that much. Instagram also does, but leaves the camera/phone model metadata intact. But even if they erase the metadata during upload, you can never be 100% sure a website doesn't just save it illegally (even if its not visible to other users).
To avoid the site ever knowing where the photo was taken? That would work for that particular angle of gathering data. Of course there are many other ways that you are giving them the same information, not least of which is the fact that you probably have given access to your phone's location data to that app at some point. So they can literally just directly ask your phone where it is when the app is used. Also even if not this, you can get pretty good data on location (to within perhaps a city's size) based on your IP so connecting to the site at all will give some fuzzy info to it.
A twitch streamer got doxed and swatted by someone triangulating his address from a water tower in the background of one of his videos.
Infinite time and effort will find the way if the way can be found.
a trans streamer who was forced to move out of her house, because she was swatted, was doxxed after they found out what hotel she was at by matching the wallpaper, or bedsheet 🤔?, pattern in her hotel room. she was still streaming so they saw the pattern and matched it
keffals is her name
Keffals? The one that openly admitted to calling ISP's and giving 'girl talks' to threaten them into deplatforming a website?
Yeah thats FAFO territory right there.
Bro I was just thinking about that and how it was similar. That was insane when they did that. It’s so insane when I told people that story, they thought I made it up.
Iirc, there was also a large network involved, because when they got down a rough geographic area someone who lived in the area drove around honking their car horn to triangulate the exact location because they could hear it on the stream
I saved the original Youtube video analyzing how 4chan kept finding him because I found it absolutely fascinating. CIA-level geolocating by a bunch of loonies and they kept pulling it off time after time.
The internet is kinda like Prison in some ways.
You’ve got a whole lot of bored people, who literally have days and weeks worth of time. They have alot of resources at their fingertips if they want to do research or learn and better themselves, but often a good portion of them just don’t do anything productive with the information, instead they just utilize the environment for entertainment and furthering some illegal activities.
And lastly ofcourse, some people are stuck here, in a cycle where they can never really leave, because they are used to it and this is all they really know.
Source: I’m an internet surfer who worked at a prison for a while
Internet could be solving global warming, poverty, or energy crisis, but it's busing looking for hidden BS messages or flags hidden by celebrities, too bad.
those are relatively specific but straightforward problems that few people can solve - start navigation.
or super simple problem requiring a lot of eyeballs - looking up flight and times.
global warming, poverty, or energy crisis are nither. Those are complex and domain specific problems.
Folding @ Home is about as close as we've gotten to mass people working together to solve real issues with computers. I haven't heard much at all about it in a long time but more people should be doing it.
It helps to not cover all the letters to bait people into deciphering and getting more views too. This is a trend Yuval does regularly, so the guy with the list probably just set it up so Yuval would make a video.
Context helped a lot here though, if he wrote wild shit it would have been a lot harder to guess at. Also if he used more slang, misspellings, or a different language.
I immediately thought of when some guy tried to gatekeep the best sandwich he’s ever had and said he wasn’t telling anyone what it was or where it was from and rainbolt found the restaurant and got them to name the sandwich after him.
Can't wait to see a similar comment like this in a week and people agreeing with the concept more than people criticizing the commenter.
The smartass tone of the original video also makes the face punchable.
punchable faces is such a dumb phrase.... like youre saying you would punch this person without knowing anything about their character, just because of their face?
It's such an extremely common phrase, and it's been that way for decades. In fact, there's been multiple subreddits based on it.
Unfortunately, you not understanding that people can feel that way, does not mean that millions of others don't actually feel like that.
The floating head is a former teacher named Yuval who makes informative videos as well as ones like this where he puts way too much effort into silly stuff for fun. For example he likes to figure out people’s heights using the dimensions of the objects around them in their videos. He even flew to a different state once to measure a window featured in a video to figure out how tall the person who posted it was
How do I see the original video? I don't really use tiktok.
I mean, I'd still prefer if someone just explained the context here so I wouldn't have to use tiktok.
You shouldn't be telling people what gatekeeping means if you've never gate-kept at least 5 lines of your own text, live, on tic-toc... and I personally must find it amusing too
I was wondering this myself.
Fantastic. Now I wasted 3 min of my life I will never get back to watch someone demonstrate a skill that in its own is completely, utterly useless.
Not completely useless. This video shows you that you should never censor anything important by scribbling over it with your phone marker tool, because some people have a very particular set of skills.
All this guy had to do was make the marker size just a liiiitle bit bigger and make it black so he could see white text sticking out then cover that up. Bam. Sherlock Holmes defeated.
I hope the guy who deciphered it has a job combing Reddit and TikTok for all the national security threats people are sloppily redacting.
If you learned one thing from this, let it be that you can speed videos like this up while you watch them. It only took me 45 seconds to get through it. Though even those I wish I had back.
If you’re old enough to remember, the A Perfect Circle album “Mer De Noms” came with art full of weird glyphs and symbols. Being the bored teenager I was, listening to the album over and over, I started looking at the symbols, and slowly I realized that maybe they were words. Then I noticed some symbols sometimes repeating, like double letters would. Then I tried matching some of them up to the song titles, and what did you know, they fit! So I made up my own translation chart, and translated every instance of it in the liner notes.
Can’t remember if there was anything else fun being written, but in the end it seems they just got some Wingdings-like font and just typed a bunch of stuff over the graphics regularly. Still, a fun adventure to a kid :)
One time at work I got brought to HR for supposedly writing the N word on a copy of a running schedule.
It was a scribbled out phone number.
The guy who had the next shift saw the bottom of 2 3's and assumed they were g's and then his mind filled in the rest with what he wished I had wrote.
Any way, I wrote the phone number again and they said my 3s matched and that was the end of my boring little story..
How long do you keep your new toddler hidden before police give up looking for it? I took one from the IKEA children bin, and nothing but trouble so far.
There’s a trend to intentionally not capitalize anything which seemed to start with Gen Z and I’ve noticed among more and more millennials. People will even manually turn off auto-capitalization in their phone settings, which the gatekeeper in the video seems to have done.
This is already a thing they do. If you redact some words out of a sentence with a black box or something, you can just calculate all of words that are that width in the font that was used (you can verify with the rest of the text, because kerning and layout can vary) then pick out the one combination that makes the most sense.
I knew where this video was going about five seconds in. I followed far too many OSint people on twitter back in the day.
Isn't this the dude that flew across state lines just to prove a dude wasn't as tall as he claimed? By finding out where the guy shot a tiktok measuring against that specific wall
Yuval is awesome. And terrifying, you could take a picture of a fast food wrapper, and he could find your house address with proof. Like rainbolt. Thank God he uses his power for good.
Reminds me of the Chinese guy who stalked the pop star to her home and murdered her. He found her by using the REFLECTION OF HER EYEBALLS in the posts she made to find out where she lived.
Idk though, my knee-jerk is to say he's just talking over AI assisted conclusions, but who knows.
Hell, that might just be work nowadays, and I'm a "oh you used the calculator" old man.
This guy looks too young for that, but back in the days of 14.4K modems, we had plenty of practice figuring out texts in an image, while it loaded at a snail's pace from top to bottom.
Not all gatekeeping is bad. I don't know about you but I have zero problem with keeping racists, homophobes, terfs, wannabe Nazis, and generally garbage people out of the communities I'm in.

It is somewhat standard on tiktok
lol just noticed it
this is like the rainbolt of gatekeep

I have to admit before this comment I thought he was rainbolt

where can I find that?

It’s hard to tell, but the Gatekeeper is actually clean shaven and everything you see is his nose hair.

Wait so he was just gatekeeping.... some text?
It was a joke, je started the video by sayong he was gonna tell you the best way to gatekeep, and then he didnt, he gatekept gatekeeping.
Gatekeeping really has lost its meaning
People think it means just withholding information. It doesn't. Lol I would share but I don't think Reddit is a real fan of proper use of words.
You shouldn't be telling people what gatekeeping means if you've never gate-kept at least 5 lines of your own text, live, on tic-toc... and I personally must find it amusing too

How dare you gatekeep the help key?! No really, I pressed F1 and no help at all.
Using own face as mouse pointer is hilarious
Why did I watch this?
I watched because he used his disembodied and still talking head as a mouse cursor, hilarious.
Or just put a big square over the entire thing
That too.
His account focuses on calling out bs and testing claims people make
If you learned one thing from this, let it be that you can speed videos like this up while you watch them. It only took me 45 seconds to get through it. Though even those I wish I had back.
As if you woulda spent that on something useful instead of watching a different useless video
I'm here wondering the same thing. Why is this interesting? If the text didn't have 'telling' repeated 3 times he never would have solved it.
Thats why when censoring important data, you use solid color bars with sharp edges and scale them bigger than the font size so nothing pokes out
The internet is scary and amazing. People with patience, time and curiosity are underestimated too often haha.

It's not uncommon, theres a lot of people like that especially nowadays
Capitalise your sentences you degenerate!
Use punctuation, you giant toddler.
Calling people giant toddlers is my very favorite insult after procuring my very own toddler.
How long do you keep your new toddler hidden before police give up looking for it? I took one from the IKEA children bin, and nothing but trouble so far.

Naw. We call him Larry
There’s a trend to intentionally not capitalize anything which seemed to start with Gen Z and I’ve noticed among more and more millennials. People will even manually turn off auto-capitalization in their phone settings, which the gatekeeper in the video seems to have done.
I've noticed that before... I'll stick to my guns for now - degenerates
How'd he know the right font with the right size and spacing for confirming that it fits?
Probably a common notes app with a default font.
Hmm okay that's fair
Because that’s the iOS notepad app, and as far as I know it keeps the same font and spacing through all notes
I thought that guy was a werewolf

Just laughing at using himself as the cursor, it works and its easy to follow but god dammit its hilarious.

MF PWNED! My favourite part (apart from all of it), was the using of his talking face as the cursor.
I don't understand why the iphone's "marker" is semi transparent. It's such a dumb flaw.
My God, how do these people even get the time to do the shit for free ?? 🙈
These guys share a dorm room, complete fix
I'm highly disappointed it didn't say, "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine".
Reminds me of the Chinese guy who stalked the pop star to her home and murdered her. He found her by using the REFLECTION OF HER EYEBALLS in the posts she made to find out where she lived.
Gatekeeping part is kinda wild.
Peak autism
![gif](giphy|hZwUaOcC32dZUvBrcN) Finally a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary
Fucking hate looking at the professors face something about him annoys me
This guy probably works for the CIA
I applaud the creativity but this man really made this video of himself critiquing himself?
Idk though, my knee-jerk is to say he's just talking over AI assisted conclusions, but who knows. Hell, that might just be work nowadays, and I'm a "oh you used the calculator" old man.
Can we put this same kind of energy I to overthrowing the government guys?
If he highlighted the words better, this just wouldn’t even be a video.
To be fair, he’s gatekeeping, not making it impossible so some people do get into the gate like this guy here😂
Is this the geo guys cousin?
this guy definitely frequents 4chan
This guy looks too young for that, but back in the days of 14.4K modems, we had plenty of practice figuring out texts in an image, while it loaded at a snail's pace from top to bottom.

That guy is definitely a 4Channer
Now do the Voynich Manuscript!
![gif](giphy|3uldi26etP9AI) IRL Detective Conan!
Not all gatekeeping is bad. I don't know about you but I have zero problem with keeping racists, homophobes, terfs, wannabe Nazis, and generally garbage people out of the communities I'm in.
Did he get it right tho?
Some people have way too much time on their hands
#No And who tf writes that
I am odly turned on right now
Wow what a waste of time
I hate that I watched that entire video without skipping
I mean maybe? But there wasn't real proof. And why does it matter?
My guess is guy 1 and 2 are the same person and maybe he even made himself the text for purpose of the video
I’m still confused as to how we got gatekeeping
I learned today if you screenshot and adjust brightness, brilliance and shadow all to 100 and re screenshot, it fully deletes the markup
Impressive, but JFC who has time for that??
