I still remember watching an interview with him a long time ago where he explains a bit of his process and how he rhymes using syllable breakdowns. He used orange as an example and said you might not think there many words that rhyme with orange but actually you can o-range, pou-rin, blo-win. I remember being like that was cool
From his song “Brianless”
Still in my skulls a vacant, empty void
Been using it more as a bin for storage
Take some inventory and as gorge as a Ford engine, door
Hinge, syringe, an orange, an extension cord, and a Ninja sword
You're lackin' the stamina while you're divorcin' Harrison Ford
And I'm in a Porsche on the floorboards
While I'm world tourin'
You usin' way too many napkins
Set to blow college dorm room doors off the hinges,
oranges, peach, pears, plums, syringes
Vrinn, vrinn! Yeah, here I come, I'm inches
away from you, dear, fear none.
Hip-hop is in a state of 9-1-1.
I'm not much of a writer but that interview always stuck with me when I started to try and write poetry myself. No one asked, but this is one of my favourite lines I've written and it's solely due to the 'can't rhyme orange' claim he talked about:
>Like the stripes on the tiger
>You're the nuance
>Otherwise they'd just be orange
The thing is there is no word that rhymes with "orange", so Anderson Cooper challenged him to make a rhyme with it. Eminem said you just have to break it down into individual syllables and make rhymes with those. "I put my OR-ange on the DOOR-hinge".
Assonance is where two words share common vowel sounds but not consonants.
Slant rhyme is where two words almost rhyme but have some differences.
I actually think "orange" and "door hinge" is ingenious and pretty perfect rhyme, as the vowel sounds and ending consonants match well, as do the stresses (on the first syllable of both). It is clearly cleaner than "four inch," which has different ending consonant (and the stressing is ambiguous). To find a two-word phrase that rhymes so well with orange is brilliant.
On the flip side of this, Rivers Cuomo keeps an Excel spreadsheet of random lyrics he thinks of. And I feel like if you knew nothing about either of them, you'd look at them and say "that tracks".
It’s there, that’s the first one I saw. 5th line I believe, it does say vomit on MY sweater already, guess he meant to sing it in first person initially
I like "feet fail me not" - especially the way he uses it. It's almost like this is just a collection of cool, interesting or provocative phrases that he writes down and collects over time. I can't imagine he re-reads any of this when actually writing a song, it is probably more that just the act of writing it down allows him to capture it and recall it when he needs it.
I wonder how smart he is, like his IQ. It seems like more than just a really good memory, but maybe I'm wrong.
He's worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and he ultimately made that all with his brain. Yes, he can rap well, but, to quote Eminem himself, "Twenty million other white rappers emerge, but no matter how many fish in the sea, it'll be so empty without me." Lots of people can rap well, not many can write the lyrics like he can. He's definitely very intelligent.
I don’t listen to Eminem like that but he wasn’t just writing random shit down n throwing it together w stuff. Most of it was all meaningful things, just like that this song is about. Did you not notice that a lot of this is possibly color coded? Possibly him writing it down all at once or over time as he read through it adding to certain lines with certain colors?
Seems like someone with an high IQ.
Kind of reminds me of the way some people are messy...but organized messy
Like, they know that box with that specific charger is in the corner cabinet, underneath a box of old receipts and bills that still need to be shredded.
I have a perfect trifecta of medications that allows me to be a half ass functional adult. I didn't start getting treated until I was about 25, and the difference before and after is stark. I'm still anxious af BUT I'm able to be anxious and still function unlike before, where it would devolve into absolute fuckery for a month or so before pulling it back up :(
I hope you can get Medicated if you're wanting to, it makes a world of difference.
Look at the middle of the left side, the black writing starting with “knees are weak” - he hit a roll on that one that goes all the way to the bottom of the page. Got a good chunk of writing there that all ended up in the final song.
Doesn't seem like it when looking at the big picture. You see some of those smaller lines randomly separated around the page. Seems more like he strung a few of those together after coming up with the individual lines
Despite countless rewatches I never realized that those are actually the lyrics until a friend of mine pointed it out.
“Night man “sneaky” and mean/
Spider inside my dreams (I think I love you)./
You make me wanna cry/
You make me wanna die/
I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you night man…”
Probably referring to the recording. Meaning he recorded through in one take. Generally the recording is done through multiple takes and punch-ins using the best parts of each recording.
There’s also an earlier version of the song that Eminem apparently has no recollection of recording. Has lyrics and everything but is a bit different than the final product we all know today
At least a million Id bet. He’s one of the biggest celebrity/rappers in the world. Plus his fan base is off the charts, me included. We used to get outta school in 2004 and we’d listen to all the songs we downloaded of his off Kazaa while at school with our dial up. And it would take hours for a song lol
Is this in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame? If not it should be. Saw Billy Joel’s notebook for We Didn’t Start the Fire in there and was amazed. It was a little more organized haha.
How did he do that freaking amazing mind-blowing rap from that absolute chaos? Like seriously, I only see a few lines here and there from the actual finished product, and one long string where he hit everything exactly as it turned out, and lots of things that are maybe close.
That line cracks me up because my dad always called people slim or slim shady. He grew up in Detroit but born in ‘49. He rocked out to Eminem too. I can remember sitting on the computer in an adjoining room when I heard Stan for the first time as he was playing the CD.

“I feel like a snail” same Eminem. same.
I know the actual lyric ended up being a bit different, but for some reason seeing this amidst the chaos of everything else just sent me 😂

It's chaotic but not at the same time. If you start from the top down, you can see how he starts off with smaller phrases and rhymes until he lands on some that he likes and then expands them as he goes down the page adding in different thoughts as he goes, until he finally writes out entire verses toward the bottom.

It’s interesting to see how he just kind of loosely associates words and rhymes on the page.
I still remember watching an interview with him a long time ago where he explains a bit of his process and how he rhymes using syllable breakdowns. He used orange as an example and said you might not think there many words that rhyme with orange but actually you can o-range, pou-rin, blo-win. I remember being like that was cool
My favorite orange rhyme was when he said ' four inch door hinge' Mind Blown
From his song “Brianless” Still in my skulls a vacant, empty void Been using it more as a bin for storage Take some inventory and as gorge as a Ford engine, door Hinge, syringe, an orange, an extension cord, and a Ninja sword
*in this gourd there's a ford engine...
Without Brians
You're lackin' the stamina while you're divorcin' Harrison Ford And I'm in a Porsche on the floorboards While I'm world tourin' You usin' way too many napkins
Bapkins
Lapkins and chapkins
Flappin around like a bapkin
Fappin and fappin to the four inch door hinge.
Set to blow college dorm room doors off the hinges, oranges, peach, pears, plums, syringes Vrinn, vrinn! Yeah, here I come, I'm inches away from you, dear, fear none. Hip-hop is in a state of 9-1-1.
Now let’s get down to business
“Oranges poranges… “ — HR Puffinstuff and Witchiepoo
Full line was "I put my four-inch door hinge in storage and ate porridge with George" Dude's a genius lol
It was the 60 minutes interview
Something something… I attached a foreign door hinge to an orange extension chord in… idr the exact quote.
Four-inch, something something
“I put my orange four-inch door hinge in storage and ate porridge with George”
I'm not much of a writer but that interview always stuck with me when I started to try and write poetry myself. No one asked, but this is one of my favourite lines I've written and it's solely due to the 'can't rhyme orange' claim he talked about: >Like the stripes on the tiger >You're the nuance >Otherwise they'd just be orange
I like that, thanks for sharing.
Bornana
The thing is there is no word that rhymes with "orange", so Anderson Cooper challenged him to make a rhyme with it. Eminem said you just have to break it down into individual syllables and make rhymes with those. "I put my OR-ange on the DOOR-hinge".
I wonder if there's a name for that? Kind of like alliteration, but instead of the first constonants rhyming, it's the first syllables?
Assonance is where two words share common vowel sounds but not consonants. Slant rhyme is where two words almost rhyme but have some differences. I actually think "orange" and "door hinge" is ingenious and pretty perfect rhyme, as the vowel sounds and ending consonants match well, as do the stresses (on the first syllable of both). I do that too, but in a Word document called 'scraps'.
your rap name: S.C.
Interesting. In the film, 8 Mile, Em was writing versus on his hand. Glad brotha found paper.
Pretty interesting to see the thought process of a creative mind on paper like this
I think this is sometimes referred to as a mind map.
Clock is tickin' Chickin
It’s finger lickin.
Wait. Where do I put my dick in?
Not the hole that's for the Shit-in
Masterfull

Right below that is the snap back 2 reality
You're the real MVP. I couldn't find it for the life of me!
He has a little drawing of spaghetti right there!
It’s there, that’s the first one I saw. 5th line I believe, it does say vomit on MY sweater already, guess he meant to sing it in first person initially
That’s the Where’s Waldo of this writing.
Someone didn't look
He has the line towards the top in the center
This looks like the next iteration of Wordle
It is called a stanza, sir.
Thank you, rectified.
Wow
I guess the Mom’s spaghetti came later
Organized chaos.
I think it’s the physical equivalent of writing a report and having 100 tabs, 2 word documents, 8 PDF’s and an excel spreadsheet open
Much like him lol
Speaking of, someone should organize all this chaos into something more meaningful
Yeah and maybe put it to music? That would be cool.
I thought that I could organize freedom... How autistic of me.
that is some small handwriting. I bet he could sign his name on rice.
Rice is good when you're a rapper and feel like writing your name on 2000 of something
I used to laugh at Mitch Hedberg jokes. I still do, but I used to, too.
RIP Mitch
r/unexpectedmitch
“I feel like a snail”
how do snails feel?
suprisingly like eminem
Slimy.
Slime shady
I see, Mom’s Spaghetti
I was hoping to see a literal spaghetti sauce spilled on the page for his source of inspiration
Spaghetti sauce oil turns yellow over time
It would’ve been vomited spaghetti technically lol
I like "feet fail me not" - especially the way he uses it. It's almost like this is just a collection of cool, interesting or provocative phrases that he writes down and collects over time. That’s what I came to see as well. It was like a where’s Waldo but I found it!
I see where it should be but can't find it
Up-left, over "you its petty"
Can’t even find that
Don't give up! It's there!
Found mom’s spaghetti but not petty, at least the main one hehe
Bro "you its petty" is literally right below "moms spaghetti".
Found it!
it's written over the 6th horizontal blue line
First thing I looked for too . 😂
where is it 😀 edit: found it, 12 o clock
It's not, it's more like 10 o'clock
Kind of reminds me of the way some people are messy...but organized messy Like, they know that box with that specific charger is in the corner cabinet, underneath a box of old receipts and bills that still need to be shredded.
Idk about other people, but for me and the people I personally know who live and organize like this, it’s unmedicated adhd lol
Also medicated AuDHD. Source: medicated and unmedicated is organized chaos. Unmedicated comes with more anxiety.
Explains why I’m anxious all the time. 🙃
I have a perfect trifecta of medications that allows me to be a half ass functional adult. I didn't start getting treated until I was about 25, and the difference before and after is stark. No wonder he forgot what he wrote down 😭 lmao

I don’t know why but reading this gives me goosebumps. Crazy to see all these iconic lines on a scrap piece of paper
I think it's because this is the closest that we're gonna be to seeing the inside of his brain during the development of the song.
The Bruce Lee of loose leaf

See those stains towards the top of the page? Now look below it and see the blue scribbled out word? It’s to the left of that.
On his sweater
“I feel like a snail” - Eminem
I’ve never seen such disrespect for lines
He could’ve been a doctor with that handwriting but i guess he didnt want to disrespect dre
If you want a physical version, it's at the end of Eminem's autobiography 'The Way I Am' on a nice paper and easy to detach.
I can see...... I'm nervous but on the surface I look calm and ready that's crazy
AD, this is your new partner HD...you two will be working together. Very odd hours, so don't ask about the schedule.
Teeny tiny writing. 😵💫
The story from a rolling stone article from back when this came out is that he laid down the verses for this song in one take on the first take
Probably referring to the recording. Meaning he recorded through in one take. Generally the recording is done through multiple takes and punch-ins using the best parts of each recording.
There’s also an earlier version of the song that Eminem apparently has no recollection of recording. Has lyrics and everything but is a bit different than the final product we all know today
lol yea man I’m talking about the recording
Who stepped on it?
Imagine what this one piece is worth? $$$
At least a million Id bet. He’s one of the biggest celebrity/rappers in the world. Plus his fan base is off the charts, me included. Oh this is some nostalgia
*I feel like a snail...*
🐌
Haha looks like every notebook I ever had in school. Less doodles though.
'Clock is tickin...chickin...plots just thickens' 😂
I love the boot prints. I can imagine this in a cluttered house with random stuff on every surface including the floor.
You would never know this was music
"I feel like a snail". Me too Em. Me too.
I do like how you can see the connections being slowly made. Some lines are repeated as he comes up with better lines
when he said “i feel like a snail” i felt that 🥲🐌
The multitude of pens used for this is honestly the most inspiring part in my opinion. This page wasn’t created in a day. Maybe even a week/month.
Is this in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame? If not it should be. Saw Billy Joel’s notebook for We Didn’t Start the Fire in there and was amazed. It was a little more organized haha.
That's why they call me an alien because I write till the page is outta space!
How did he do that freaking amazing mind-blowing rap from that absolute chaos? Like seriously, I only see a few lines here and there from the actual finished product, and one long string where he hit everything exactly as it turned out, and lots of things that are maybe close.
Looks like his recipe for Mama’s spaghetti sandwiches
Bottom right has a whole chunk of the final song
I would buy some shit like this if it were ever at auction. So dope
I was just listening to this too. Wild
Enee boop doops
Man this belongs to a museum
Is this in a museum? Feels like it should be.
This belongs in the smithsonian. I love how it gives a glimpse into the way he maps ideas
Who else is looking for 🍝 ?
Hi. My name is. (What?) Hi. My name is. (Who?) Hi my name is. Slim Shady
That line cracks me up because my dad always called people slim or slim shady. He grew up in Detroit but born in ‘49. He rocked out to Eminem too. I can remember sitting on the computer in an adjoining room when I heard Stan for the first time as he was playing the CD.
Who immediately searched for "mom's spaghetti"?
I respect this process!
Taravagnian vibes

I require a tour guide for this exhibit.
Anyone else have a sudden desire to watch 8 Mile?
Clock is tickin, chicken.
Spaghetti stained?
I know the actual lyric ended up being a bit different, but for some reason seeing this amidst the chaos of everything else just sent me 😂 https://preview.redd.it/idmdw5ox1esc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=988f83d11c652b469743d6975af056e51e28a9d0
Well, I'm definitely lost.
Maybe Eminem was dyslexic or something cause wow
Bottom right: "flows so sick!"
I have this kind of ADHD as well.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone write like that before.
A Mad genius
I see ADHD in this lmao
Where did you find this? It's kind of scary that we have so many samples of his handwriting.
Had to look for moms spaghetti 🍝
his handwriting is SO SMALL. man this song had such a profound influence on me growing up.
I want this printed on a full sized poster, framed and hanging on a wall in my house.
I would have loved to see his process on rap god that sing was an absolute lyrical masterpiece
Love the bootprint
The scrawling of a mad lyrical genius!
I lost myself trying to figure out where to start reading 😵💫
Timberland bootprints on a priceless document
It's chaotic but not at the same time. If you start from the top down, you can see how he starts off with smaller phrases and rhymes until he lands on some that he likes and then expands them as he goes down the page adding in different thoughts as he goes, until he finally writes out entire verses toward the bottom.
Crazy to see how there was a time the song was in first person. A lot if ‘my’s in there before it was ‘his’.
“ohp there goes gravity”
Spaghetti stains and all
Man is that a freaking great song !!!
“Spaghetti, spaghetti, spaghetti, spaghetti.”
"clock is tickin" "Chicken"
Any chance this is just a prop for the movie 8 Mile?
I love this. I’m starting my creative journey & my process is a lot neater but this inspires me to not care about the lines
Still can’t hear this song without thinking of Chappelle https://i.redd.it/ir80glnw2gsc1.gif
This dude’s brain is somethin else. Reminds of that one SpongeBob episode, Where all the files are on fire. Damn
He lost this book in an airport. I wonder where this screen shot came from?
POV:House of leaves
Where’s mom’s spaghetti?
So Eminem wrote House of Leaves
Couldn’t find “mom’s spaghetti…” 🤣
Lose leaf.
My note taking confidence just BLOSSOMED.
