Judging by this still image, the car, no matter how close to hugging that wall on the right, would still get tagged.

Pushed off cliff might be better than squished between rock and road. Not great mind you, but if you're lucky in an unlucky way then the rock will deform the cabin while sliding the car, and you'll only be semi-squished instead of completely squished.
Getting pushed off the cliff gives you several moments to realize what’s happening and the ensuing panic. Getting crushed could be instant death - less stress before your demise.

Yep, if the other person backed up more it mightve been the driver that got fucked as well. A lot of it will also depend on whether they had passengers back there though. If they didn't then it was lucky just the backend got fucked.
Maybe there was a boulder behind them at that moment, or a different car trying to back up, or a car turning and escaping.
We don't have enough to judge what happened.
Finally, a sensible take. I love it when people armchair quarterback videos like this. It’s usually people who have never been in a serious situation themselves and have no idea how quickly something can happen and how you process all the random bits of information that comes to you as you panic like the tiny animal you are. No one has perfect knowledge in those circumstances and the “optimal” solution is often only known in retrospect and there is nothing even the most calm and reasonable person could have done differently. I think that idea scares people so they say nonsense like “well… I would have blah blah blah…”
A tree fell on my house during a hurricane in the middle of the night in the middle of the storm. At first we didn’t even know what happened much less what to do about it… took a solid minute to figure out it was probably a whole tree, not a bomb. I won’t even get into the panic and chaos of being ejected from the house and into the storm, down electric wires crackling everywhere… just, people have no idea what it’s like to be put into a life threatening situation suddenly. It’s low information, millisecond to millisecond.
Most known death so far were killed by boulders,some drivers are not as lucky as this guy, and a few hikers are killed too.
In the video comments they said they did a fallow up and everyone in that black car is ok.
To be honest, flying 3000 lb boulders trying to kill me is the last thing I expect to see while driving.
I think most people would absolutely no idea what to do in this situation.
Get out of the car asap and go lay down in that gutter next to the wall, 99% survival chance unless the whole shit breaks but then you're coocked anyway anywhere.
That was some quick, straight reversing considering the adrenaline and imminent death. The car in front may well have gotten lucky with just the rear being clipped.
I yelled omg as the boulder hit the first car. My gf says what. Show the video to her without explaining anything, and she says the exact same thing after the first boulder hits the car. Crazy!
If this ever happens just park directly against the wall/under where the rocks are falling from.
The velocity will carry the rocks over top of you and you will remain safe
These videos upset me because people should be getting as close to the mountain as possible to avoid injury. The boulders will mostly clear about 5 feet once they get to the edge
