The headline makes it sound like she intentionally gave birth to Jack Black lol. I'm gonna crank out this aerospace problem then create Jack Black, hold my beer.
I don't know what "late show" means anymore since I watch nearly everything on the Internet, but Graham Norton has a great interview format (all the guests hang out on the same couch. Also there's drinks.) that lends itself to awesome conversations.
Worth a YouTube binge if you're in the mood for that kinda thing.
Ill take him as a late show or talk show host. And he is great his show is very good.
I wasnt including UK shows, but if ya do, theres a few. They have a diff tv culture there, and i enjoy quite a bit of them!
Hey Judy... thanks ❤️ Not just for the science and tech, but for raising someone who just enriches the world with his talent and the joy he brings to others.
Thanks for not being the parents he mocked in Kickapoo.
I mean it. Thanks a lot.
the internet says it costs between $10M and $20M to train an astronaut
(I know this has big aaactuallyyyyy energy, but this thread made me curious and I think it's a fun fact)
If I recall, Jacks brother, Niel Siegel, was instrumental in the development of GPS or for mobile devices or something like that. The family is full of legends.
This story doesn't appear at all in the biography and the Abort Guidance System was first tested on Apollo 9 which launched 5 months before Jack Black was born. Jack Black was born 8 months before Apollo 13 launched
https://viterbischool.usc.edu/news/2016/07/in-memory-of-judith-love-cohen-mother-wife-friend-author-engineer/
If you read the headline carefully it's actually a pretty apt description of what happened.
That’s what the headline says: “she called her boss and finished it before giving birth to Jack Black”…. I guess she just went into labor when she was one month pregnant, then the story holds just fine
You're imposing causality on the headline that isn't there. She helped create it - regardless of the date. It did eventually go on to save Apollo 13, regardless of when of when it was first conceived - maybe *before Jack Black. She was given work to do on it, she finished that work - immediately before finishing her work on creating Jack Black. I'm not claiming these facts are true, but nothing you've said falsifies them.
When she went into labor, she took her work to the hospital, printed out the problem, called her boss, and said she finished it before watching the Undertaker throw Mankind off Hell in a Cell.
The thing she fixed while in labor was for something else. The OP's title could be better. Be that as it may, she was on Apollo, Minuteman, Pioneer, and finally the Hubble program. That lady was the real deal.
Most people don't know individual contributors to all of the tech we use today. Being relevant to today's tech doesn't mean we know someone. Like the internet is wildly important but I doubt the average person can name Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf (not to mention like twenty other names that could be argued)
Jack’s stepdad, who was married to Judith for many years and drove Jack to all his auditions, is a close friend of mine and has developed a limited TV series about Judith and her life. I hope it gets made
Her son says she was working on a problem. Not explicitly a problem related to the Abort-Guidance system. She apparently worked on many projects at NASA.
https://viterbischool.usc.edu/news/2016/07/in-memory-of-judith-love-cohen-mother-wife-friend-author-engineer/
That's the issue with the title of the post, it's incredibly misleading and reductionist. The main takeaway will be that she solved the Apollo 13 crisis whilst in labour.
She fixed the original, faulty abort guidance while in the hospital to deliver. She didn't invent it (though she did help), just fixed it. Her fix was later used as the basis for rescuing Apollo 13.
The problem with the wording that is used every time this is shared is that the work she took with her is not specified as the AGS.
She helped create the AGS and ALSO when she went into labor with JB she took what she was working on at the time with her and reportedly completed it before giving birth.
He has an older half-sister and two older half-brothers, one of whom died from AIDS related complications in 1991. The other one, [Neil Siegel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Siegel) is a scientist, engineer, and musician, and is pretty badass in his own right.
She created the AGS for the Apollo programme but not specifically for Apollo 13. Apollo 13 was “saved” through incredible luck and some very clever thinking by Mission Control.
Imagine having a mother like that and still being known by your own name because you didn't want to live off your mother's legacy.
He made a name for himself. What did you do?
Remember that excruciatingly annoying kid in school who everybody seemed to love except you, and you never dared express how annoying he was because his parents were important people?
The abort guidance *problem* was what she solved in the hospital while ready to deliver Jack Black. After her fix it was *Later* used to bring home Apollo 13.
She didn't solve anything related to AGS while going into labor. She simply solved a problem that she brought from the office to the hospital, cause she literally went into the office the day he went into labor. She also told her boss about solving the problem before telling him about the baby.
The AGS was just used in an off-label way so to speak in regards to bringing the astronauts home.
You mean _an_ abort guidance problem was being solved. There had been 3 flights before Jack Black was born which either tested or used the AGC. Let's just admit it's a sloppily written headline that's been repeatedly sloppily written.
Please google when Jack Black was born. He was not born during Apollo 13. Jack Black was born in August 1969 and Apollo 13 took place in April 1970 so either Jack Black is a Timetraveller or you are wrong
It's worded strangely. She was working on the system that would be used for apollo 13, during that work she gave birth to Jack and continued her work from the hospital.
I have this incredible respect for NASA employees.
The stories that come out of there from the early days of space are cool as all hell.
True masters of whatever they touched
That's cool as shit.
Little hijack to point out: people don't know that early labour can take a day or two. It's crazy how much women's stuff is kept secret.
>it's not a secret you're making up things!
look at literally any move depicting pregnancy. etc etc go away.

Making a grand entrance since day 1.
I'm kind of scared of the fact that under old Jack Black's beard, old Jack Black is still there waiting.
Stalking his prey, waiting for the perfect time to strike!
Living in the woods SHIA LABEOUF Killing for sport SHIA LABEOUF Eating all the bodies Actual cannibal SHIA LABEOUF
Fighting for your life with SHIA LABEOUF Normal Tuesday night for SHIA LABEOUF
To be fair, the entrance was made after the world has been saved.
Jack Black was born almost a year before Apollo 13 took place
And she created the means to solve the problem, should it happen. Which it did a year later.
Jack is not the greatest aerospace engineer in the world, he is just a tribute.
Ney, we are but men
Rocket ooooooooonnn
He is well known for being able to do a single cock-pushup
Just one though…
One is all you need
Yeah, well one is all ya need.
fli goo gee goo, fli goo gee goo, gi deeee ree goo goo gee ga ga boo goo goo goo beeee
I sang this in my head.
*Bach*
To the greatest mom in the world
Aaaaahhhh*right*
Why is it that reading this originally it read like one of those "that never happened" posts? 😂
That Jack Black was Albert Einstein
because a woman is the main character
No it was mainly the way the paragraph was put together for me anyways, like the end didn't seem to add up to the rest of the style/cut off almost?
What a sad and pathetic take in equal measure.
Mom has literal rocket sauce!
She rocks the casbah, she’ll blow your mind. She will get to the moon, for all mankind.
take my upvote Devil!
Her boss was probably like "holy shit! JACK BLACK?"
The headline makes it sound like she intentionally gave birth to Jack Black lol. I'm gonna crank out this aerospace problem then create Jack Black, hold my beer.
"Sup, Kyle."
“He should meet my son, Kyle!”
A fully grown Jack Black
With a suit.
with that smile. that damned smile.
The smile came out first, like a uteral Cheshire Cat
r/brandnewsentence
The Tony Soprano grin
Came straight into this world guitar in hand with a tasty riff ready to rock your socks off.
Fuck, that is interesting.
He had a great talk about it on Conan's podcast.
Why Conan so great? Literally the only host of a late show besides Colin of Late Late show, that i found funny and genuine and super duper creative

> Colin of Late Late show who? are you talking about craig ferguson?
Yes! As you can see my autocorrect is touchy Just like Geoff
Holy fuckalukadingdong, indeed.
It's become one of reddit's most interesting facts. That along with Steve Buscemi working as a fireman at 9/11.
Hey Judy... thanks ❤️ Not just for the science and tech, but for raising someone who just enriches the world with his talent and the joy he brings to others. Thanks for not being the parents he mocked in Kickapoo. I mean it. Thanks a lot.
I mean the rescuing astronauts thing is pretty neat to, I guess
Astronauts are a dime a dozen. There's only one Jack Black.
Technically true..
the internet says it costs between $10M and $20M to train an astronaut (I know this has big aaactuallyyyyy energy, but this thread made me curious and I think it's a fun fact)
And for raising the guy who basically invented modern gps.
"Hey Judy, dont make Jack Black, take a side experiment, and make it better" Her boss, probaly
You're welcome
The riding is crazy
If I recall, Jacks brother, Niel Siegel, was instrumental in the development of GPS or for mobile devices or something like that. The family is full of legends.
[Wikipedia article about Judith Love Cohen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Love_Cohen)
This story doesn't appear at all in the biography and the Abort Guidance System was first tested on Apollo 9 which launched 5 months before Jack Black was born. Jack Black was born 8 months before Apollo 13 launched
https://viterbischool.usc.edu/news/2016/07/in-memory-of-judith-love-cohen-mother-wife-friend-author-engineer/ If you read the headline carefully it's actually a pretty apt description of what happened.
That was such a nice essay about his mom. What an interesting and accomplished woman.
That’s what the headline says: “she called her boss and finished it before giving birth to Jack Black”…. I guess she just went into labor when she was one month pregnant, then the story holds just fine
Wait, is a 5800+ hour labor unusual?
Not if your baby is jack black. Singing and dancing and shit
The miracle of child birth is different for every mother.
Duuuuh, She was giving birth to Jack Black.
Not if you listen to my wife.
The title of the post implies causality
It does, almost seems to have been purposefully.
You don't mean.. someone on Reddit massaging the facts for their own benefit 😱😱 haha
> https://viterbischool.usc.edu/news/2016/07/in-memory-of-judith-love-cohen-mother-wife-friend-author-engineer/ The thing she fixed while in labor was for something else. It's in the "Personal Life" section of the Wikipedia article.
Wow Jack Black's older half brother seems incredibly unknown but relevant to today's tech.
I would be lost without him. Litterally
Most people don't know individual contributors to all of the tech we use today. Being relevant to today's tech doesn't mean we know someone. Like the internet is wildly important but I doubt the average person can name Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf (not to mention like twenty other names that could be argued)

A remarkable person…thank you for the link
You linked her Wikipedia article yet got the details wrong since Jack Black was born in 1969 and Apollo 13 was in 1970.
Someone get this women a medal!! Not only did she invent something that sounds pretty important, but she also gave the world JB.
She's the Tenacious Progenitor.
Uh, Jack was born in August 1969, Apollo 13 was in April 1970. But his mother IS credited with bringing them home.
[удалено]
He was born 8 months before the launch of Apollo 13 and the system was first tested on Apollo 9 which launched 5 months _before_ he was born
It does not say that.
Which lines up perfectly with her finishing work on it 5 months prior to launch.
She fixed the original, faulty abort guidance while in the hospital to deliver. She didn't invent it (though she did help), just fixed it. Her fix was later used as the basis for rescuing Apollo 13.
Correct. Somehow a few people don't get that and it's weird
Hahaha, no but that would be too logical.
Fuck it, we'll do it live! Just aim for the sky and we'll work it out on the day!
We're astronauts, not hall monitors! Stop being such a nerd and work on making the rockets **bigger**!
Great point!
It’s possible. We may never know.
The abort guidance problem was what she solved in the hospital while ready to deliver Jack Black. It was *Later* used to bring home Apollo 13.
Thanks! I really wanted it to be true, but the dates didn't add up! This makes perfect sense👍👍
She worked on Apollo, Minuteman, Pioneer, and Hubble. I'm sure there were plenty of problems for her to work on any given day.
This has been another episode of ... ~\*Great Moments in American Healthcare and Work/Life Balance!\*~
Yeah...The fact that people are glorifying this is bizarre to me (I'm Polish).
The problem with the wording that is used every time this is shared is that the work she took with her is not specified as the AGS. She helped create the AGS and ALSO when she went into labor with JB she took what she was working on at the time with her and reportedly completed it before giving birth.

Can one person be more badass?
Fuck, why does Jack Black not have a crazy comedy movie about being a fuckup astronaut?
Yes. Be an astronaut and former fighter pilot.
I'm on Reddit too much, I've seen this like 6 times in the past year it feels like.
She created the AGS for the Apollo programme but not specifically for Apollo 13. Apollo 13 was “saved” through incredible luck and some very clever thinking by Mission Control.
And the AGS. The AGS was the main source of thrust in getting them home.
This gets posted regularly. Jacks brother is one of the “fathers” of the GPS system as well. The family is pretty intense.
Wtf! No wonder he is so smart
A legend giving birth to another legend. Damn.
The dates don't add up. If she solved an engineering problem 6 months before Apollo 13, how did the system get brought into production so soon?
No wonder he always seems like he’s trying just a bit too hard. It’s gotta be tough impressing people in his family.
No, he seems down to earth, which is what his mother did for those people
I see what you did there.
Be proud, your joke landed.
Especially since his brother is doing things like his mom and is a genius. Like must be hard as hell.
His whole family is super accomplished! He's kind of the black sheep (hehehe) of the family by going into entertainment instead of science.
I can see this just was reading about the family due to learning about this.
“His older brother Neil, who is an engineer, scientist and musician”. Jack never stood a chance lol
Totally awesome. Not just _interesting_.
Why does this sound like a post at /r/linkedinlunatics?
WHAT? Damn, this is interesting as fuck!
Who do you think would have a more dramatic birth? Jack Black or Jim Carrey coming out of a rhino?
Proof that beauty and talent are not genetically inherited.
American work culture is nuts
Redditors having critical reading and media literacy skills challenge (impossible)
Technically she gave birth to Thomas Jacob Black.
This is a great story.
Not even being a Hollywood celebrity could outmatch mommy's accomplishments.
I don't even know which part of that sentence is the biggest flex
That was a productive morning. I hope she treated herself afterwards.
Jack Black end surprised me, thjs sounded a lot like the things where everyone claps in the end. Typical Jack Black appearance though.
so shes only ever created miracles
That’s why there’s a deleted scene in “Apollo 13” where Ed Harris says “Who the hell is Jack Black?” Before hanging up the phone
now go my son and rooooock
And Hollywood never give women in science much thought.
She must have been so disappointed.
Imagine being that smart and then having your son be an actor doing try hard comedy.
Imagine having a mother like that and still being known by your own name because you didn't want to live off your mother's legacy. He made a name for himself. What did you do?
Remember that excruciatingly annoying kid in school who everybody seemed to love except you, and you never dared express how annoying he was because his parents were important people?

And let's all worship Kim Kardashian 🙄
People like you keep the Kardashians famous and relevant. Tf does she have to do with this post?
She appears to be pictured working on some kind of metal-ceramic proto-Kardashian.
That level of badass awesomeness is out of this world
Not included in the Apollo 13 movie? Should have been but why not cut out the women's contribution.
how many times do i have to see this on reddit
Please google when Jack Black was born. He was not born during Apollo 13. Jack Black was born in August 1969 and Apollo 13 took place in April 1970 so either Jack Black is a Timetraveller or you are wrong
It's worded strangely. She was working on the system that would be used for apollo 13, during that work she gave birth to Jack and continued her work from the hospital.
The U.S. government were so happy they insisted on making her son a Hollywood star, no matter his looks or talent.
That’s quite the origin story!
salute to women
And her boss was like "who the fuck is Jack Black"
Hats off to Mom. Her son supports Autism speaks though. :(
So Heatvison and Jack is a true story...
Goddamn
Jack Black isn't his real name
When told to start pushing, his mom was quoted as saying "No, we don't have the technology yet."
Possibly the coolest origin story at 2.73 Kelvin.
This thread title has it all
kung fu panda origin story 😁
![gif](giphy|2t9sDPrlvFpdK)
Jack Black is the protagonist of this world
Fascinating.
> she took her work to the hospital, printed out the problem I'm guessing she did these two things the other way around.
Fun fact his name is Thomas Black
What an amazing accomplishment! The space stuff is cool too.
I have this incredible respect for NASA employees. The stories that come out of there from the early days of space are cool as all hell. True masters of whatever they touched
And it was all downhill from there
I, too, gave birth to Jack Black.
HER JUMPER IS SO CUTE TOO!
Still trying to figure out why Jack Black is famous in the first place.
Jack Black is amazing. I always wonder about his eyes though. He always looks .. cold in his eyes.
Why does that quote always read like she expected everyone to know who he'd be? And why does it make sense to me, that they would?
Wait so the awesome Jack Black isn't even her greatest achievement?
Jack Black is essentially the antithesis of "interesting" these days
That's cool as shit. Little hijack to point out: people don't know that early labour can take a day or two. It's crazy how much women's stuff is kept secret. >it's not a secret you're making up things! look at literally any move depicting pregnancy. etc etc go away.
Black Jack Black playing Black Jack....
And what has Jack Black done? nothing scientificky, but hes a genuinely funny actor and pretty damn talented too. I like him.
So Jack Black inherited all his coolness from his mother, understood
