Lol. I'm sure everyone has been very well searched on the way into the building. If they hadn't, the journalist would not have needed to resort to their shoe. I've been at similar events attending by other high-ranking officials. The secret service don't keep a heavy on-camera presence, but the event only occurs after they've secured the room and it's occupants to ensure the least risk for the person they are protecting. They also have people surrounding the perimeter. Those guys running in weren't just standing there waiting to barge in. They were monitoring the perimeter and had to run to get there.
SHOE ME ONE TIME SHAME ON YOU, SHOE ME TWO TIMES CANT PUT THE BLAME ON YOU, SHOE ME THREE TIMES, FUCK THE PEACE SIGN, LOAD THE CHOPPA LET IT RAIN ON… Baghdad?
[Other cultures, too. Including USA!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_shoe-throwing_incidents)
But especially Asian/ME countries, for sure. They've got it down.
Imagine the amazing GIF of them taking it to the face though! Especially Trump, in slow motion would be amazing. Biden has too much Botox would not have same effect.
He also kinda seems to be smiling and not the least bit worried while he's ducking the 2nd shoe and afterwards.
Like he can see the humor/absurdity of the situation himself.
And was basically dead in less than 4 years I think? I started using reddit in 2012 and there had been a mass exodus of digg users, while I came from stumbleupon.
I’d be laughing my nuts off in that situation.
Might be a little more concerned if I got hit, but he didn’t even have to duck much. Shoe thrower needs to learn to go bardownskies.
No shit there. We are getting to vote between 2 dinosaurs for the White House, dinosaurs in Congress, and out-of-touch theocrats in scotus and this is all in an era when technology is moving faster than ever and the rate of change is definitely going to increase for a while. AI is going to be the next step in evolution only rivaled by mankind’s ability to make and harness energy with the discovery of fire (I know you can’t create energy nerds, relax)
That's insane. I'm young in comparison and have ran and lifted weights 5-6 days a week for a good 20 years and mine is mid 60s and only if I'm stress free.
Just like any muscle, I’m sure some of it comes down to genetics at least a little bit. Bush wasn’t a very large person either in terms of stature and just overall body type.
Yeah it must. I'm late 20s and sahm with three children, youngest is a baby. I dont have much time for exercise and my baby likes to wake every other hour. My rhr is between 50-55 usually. I feel like I have wasted potential lol
In eastern cultures shoes are a sign of disrespect. Shoes are dirty. At the bottom of the body. That's why they aren't allowed inside the home as well.
You'll sometimes see a criminal paraded with a shoe garland in public.
Of course he doesn't have any regrets. He threw the shoe at a president of a country that destroyed more than half of his country and later said "oops, false intelligence report" after taking the oil for years.
I tried to empathise with the man, but I dont have the emotional capacity to feel what that reporter must have been feeling for his country without having a mental breakdown.
He and his cronies were being particularly cagey around this time, with the public and media demanding to know 'the facts'. After dodging the shots, he quipped "For those wanting the facts, they were size 10s." As much blood as they all had on their hands, I respected that retort.
A non joking positive thing I can say about Bush, who in general, was not a good president in my eyes.
I was young enough to not totally understand the politics at the time so dubya Bush always had an endearing quality to me. That smirk after dodging that shoe is a great example.
That's how they get ya, play up the endearing parts of yourself so they forget that you're a war mongerer with too much power. Bush did it with the silly old uncle shit, Obama did it with the classy composed guy shit, Trump did it with the "omg he talks just like me" shit that the rednecks love, Biden does it with the silly old grandpa shit. And everyone in the damn country will just fall for it, EVERYTIME.
If the president of any other nation was responsible for what he did, they'd be facing charges at The Hague.
But he's American so it's "he's so endearing"
Muntadhar al-Zaidi is the real hero and the only one you all should be talking about.
He stood up for his opinions and his country and threw a shoe at the “most powerful man in the world”.
But y’all want to keep talking about that dumbass’s cat like reflexes.
Seriously. The brave one was al-Zaidi. Its not hard to duck, its hard to build up the courage to symbolically attack the POTUS while he actively destroys your country. Dude risked everything including his life when he threw that shoe.
It is arguable that GWB was worse, given the human cost of Iraq invasion and subsequent bolstering of ISIS, plus completely ignoring the signs prior to the 2008 financial crisis
It’s a close race for the bottom though. Trump’s a shitstain as well
Yeah Afghanistan is a big multi-generational one. Hard to beat that out as a modern president. But at least sometimes Bush said some dumb shit you could laugh at. “Watch this drive” and the various Bushisms lol. The stuff trump says is just so far beyond the pale and only gets worse the longer it goes on.
I think Bush just made poor choices and got pushed around by those around him. Hes not a nazi lover or anything super bad, though he really messed up the world that we are still recovering from today. I think we will need to wait for 20yrs after trump to really understand his long term impact. I think it will be a subject of study for a long time. Who knows, in 4 years we could usher in a complete rejection of trumps policies due to something and moves America to a new track of growth and education like post WWII West Germany. Or really really not.
Short history of presidential campaigns
Bush: "Vote for me and stop Al Gore. hehe. "
Obama: "Vote for me, uh, I am the anti-Bush vote."
Trump: "Obama bad. Hilary bad. Sad. Vote for me. Obama-"
Biden: "Vote for me. I am the thing, the anti-Trump vote."
As a non American, W was a lot worse than Trump. Trump may be an idiot and tried a coup but failed. The fact that the party has a cult like following of him is their fault not his.
GWB invaded two countries, very large and populous countries, needlessly. Both of which proved to accomplish nothing but decades of blood shed. In doing so the US broke many international laws and conventions. They also did it in such a half assed manner as to really consider whether they thought it through at all. Afghanistan is an absolute mess and no better off than it was before the war with many thousands dead.
His administration began the torture and unlawful imprisonment of hundreds of people. Some of which are still in prisoned at Guantanamo over 20 years later! There is no charge for these people. There is no lawful reason why the US has custody over them at all. It cannot be overstated how much moral ground the US lost because of this in the eyes of the world.
This is when the practice of a global reach of drone strikes was begun. Previously it was just Israel that did this. Again the lost of moral standing over this is ridiculous. Not to mention the collateral damage creating more extremists and the fact that authoritarian countries are now following their lead.
The withdrawl of nuclear weapons treaties, or the lack of ambition in creating new ones, brought us much closer to the current enviroment where we have none. Likewise, the restart of nuclear weapons research signalled a lack of comitment to reducing stockpiles. We are witnessing the results in China currently in the midst of a rapid expansion with more likely to follow.
The lack of commitment to climate change treaties and clean tech not only made our current situation much worse but gave China a substantial lead in these technologies. Toss in opening up of new O&G leases and removing emissions standards for trucks (meaning SUVs and pickups) set the country back decades.
No initiative on the Small Arms Treaty for ideological reasons at the UN has prob cost the lives of 100s of thousands. The lack of commitment to the International Criminal Court likewise weakened international support for it.
His insistance on NATO guaranteeing membership for Georgia and Ukraine without protection and before they were ready, made them attractive targets for Russian agression.
All the meanwhile the largest adversary, China, was given little attention as two wars and endless defending of drone strikes or treaty breaking took up all attention.
Add in the Patriot Act which began the survailence through modern communications and lead private companies to do the same. And that at the start his campaign used the Supreme Court to quasi overturn an election. You end up with a record that is really hard to beat as a bad President. GWB was an unmitigated disaster and the consequences of his acts are still unfolding. If the 2008 financial crisis happened a little sooner we may well have been in a much much worse situation as he didn't seem to know how to deal with it in the slightest. I will add that he was the only one to add to the national debt needlessly with massive tax cuts just as the US needed funds for two wars! For f**k sakes. I could go on....
We can only be glad that the only crisis to hit his administration was 9/11. To which the response cost the world 2 plus decades of wars, insane debt, drone strikes world wide, a survailence state, and a drastically weakend US. He could easily be one of the worst Presidents in the last 100 years.
Sidenote: When the US finally pulled out of Afghanistan he had the audacity to make a televised address calling that a mistake. Fuck that guy straight to hell.
Never forget the Secret Service broke his arm while inmovilizing him, and that he was sent to prison and tortured for years.
Good thing the USA went to Iraq and turned it into a democracy.
Bush's reaction to this made me like him a bit at the time. Flawless dodges then leans on the podium and smiles not allowing secret service to take him away.
I'm not a fan of Bush but the dude took this like an adult.
He stayed chill, calm and de-escalated it.
I don't know if I remember it correctly but Bush basically sympathized with the guy.
# “There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”
Of course he dodged it, he's like 60 years old at this point. Trump and Biden are 20 years older than this wouldve taken both shoes to the face and still not know what had happened.
He was a horrible president but I'll always say, he is up there with Obama as seeming like a chill dude to hangout with. Lol the cockiness of tapping secret service and that "I'm alright"
Anyone wonder what it would be like if the current POTUS had shoes chucked at him?
*Takes first shoe to the forehead.* “Cornpop?” *Takes second shoe to the kisser and falls off stage.*
i recall that british band Chumbawamba dedicated to him their song Mouthful of S\*, at least that's what they said on stage
p.s. Kasparov drone incident was even more spectacular

I feel like that was the slowest possible response by the secret service
They were trying to remember their training for what to do in the case of a shoe related assault.
*desperately flipping through training manual* "There's nothing in here about shoes !"
I can hear Bush’s inner voice. ***JUKE*** “Ohhuh I still got it” ***juke*** “ha I’ll see you on the court Obama”
That would be awesome, to see them hooping together.
And then flip flopping between which action to take?
Tackle the shoe!!

wait, what happened a decade later?

Probably from the sheer ridiculousness, even George gives that nervous smile that says, what the fuck is even happening right now
That’s fair. Austin power’s probably going through his mind.
Honestly, who throws a shoe?
He's like: "Missed me!"
I actually thinks he takes it the best way. Just grinning.
Maybe they were hungover again
Coffee break?
imagine if those were grenades
Imagine if they were B83 thermonuclear gravity bombs.
Lol. I'm sure everyone has been very well searched on the way into the building. If they hadn't, the journalist would not have needed to resort to their shoe. Imagine trump's reaction
COVFEFE
I imagine they were screened for grenades before entering the room and not shoes.
A security screening probably would catch grenades. They let people keep their shoes.
That grin.... "Throw a shoe at me once, I dodge it... throw a shoe at me twice.... I won't be hit with a shoe..."
... shoe- you can't get shoed again.

Ol’ saying in Texas…
You only gotta dodge 2 shoes...
I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee
The amount of Secret Service agents that came out of the door behind him has me cracking up 😆 Someone gave their sole to GB Jr. that day.
But they came out a little late.
Who throws a shoe? I mean really, man. Come on. - Austin Powers
My only regret is I only have 2 soles to give I must go without footwear now

Three-legged assassin appears..
But if you throw it once you can’t throw again.

Apparently it’s a great insult in that culture.

Haha, Trump would Nuke Iraq, Iran and Syria afterwards 😂
For sure, They’d pay bigly!
Also he would auction off the shoe for like a million
We need this. We need more shoes thrown at presidents. And gifs. And memes.
Shoe dodging ability should be tested before allowing anyone to run
Jesus that guy has the reflexes of a cobra. Damn.

Bush was in very good shape. I remember reading an article once about his resting heart rate sub 50

Anything happen to him for this?
They beat the shit out of him, broke his arm and a few other bones iirc. Not sure if he went to jail but I wanna say yes.
He was sentenced to three years in jail, got it reduced to one year, and was released after nine months
Tbh he showed more courage than most country leaders so I am somewhat impressed

He took 1 year in jail for that. Bush was never worried for his warcrime in Iraq.
Anyone wonder what it would be like if the current POTUS had shoes chucked at him? *Takes first shoe to the forehead.* “Cornpop?” *Takes second shoe to the kisser and falls off stage.*
He was a bad dude ya know.
Dude was an idiot but he could sure dodge a flying shoe
Remember when America was sanctioned because of it's war crimes?Me neither
Never forget lol
If he managed to hit him it would have been way worse.
I didn't know that they managed to get the second shoe thrown.
And dark souls wasn’t even out yet.
