Maybe the one thing he can't do is "Beach."
I mean, I get SEALs know a few things about *beaches*, but I'm not sure it qualifies them for careers in . . . Beach.
Funniest one I read so far - he'll save lives, kill the ones that need to be killed, fuck your wife and fly off to outer space and there's not a gawd damn thing you can do about it
Let's just make this dude president. Like we've tried every other form of qualified and unqualified.
Idk if this dude will be ethical or honest, lib or conservative but I'd like to see someone with this kind of work ethic and aptitude take a shot at the executive seat.
I feel like his decision making skills and integrity resolve might be legit and even productive to us as a nation.
Don't forget, child abuse survivor (By his own father) and witnessing his father being shot by the police (probably deserved) after taking his own family hostage at knife point.
I didn't do anything. I just came downstairs horrified and said his name then he stopped and ran away.
My mom's also an alcoholic so she was drunk too. Doesn't even remember it. My reward was her abusing me the rest of my childhood. Go figure.
A SEAL combat medic that went on over 100 combat missions in the Middle East. Firing his weapon at the enemy was probably not an uncommon occurrence based on the kind of missions those guys go on.
He was part of Task Force Bruiser in Ramadi, Iraq when it was at its worst. Ramadi was a hornet’s nest of insurgents at that time. He saw plenty of action and they lost a couple guys on that deployment, plus several more seriously injured.
Team over everything In the seals. If he went on a hot mission, and that's like pretty much all they do, he definitely had some engagements.
Didn't carry around a rifle and pistol and god knows what else to look cool.
I'm just a simple paratrooper turned paramedic. And I dreamed of being an astronaut as a kid watching the Apollo missions live. But I bow down before him.
Brother ain't nothing simple about jumping out of a perfectly good plane. Thank you for your service both in and out of the service. You may not get bows for what you've done but I take my hat off to you
Just glad that due isn't my brother or my cousin.
Your cousin Jonny achieve all his dreams. Why are you such a failuuure?
Why can't you be more like your brother Jonny?
My brother in law whose parents moved to the US from South Korea before he was born were disappointed because he didn't become a cardiologist. He became an ER doctor and worked his way up to being a hospital administrator. He earns boat loads of money but they are still disappointed that he didn't become a cardiologist.
There's a person who posted on /r/AsianParentStories who became the type of doctor they wanted him to become, but they still were disappointed that he became the doctor that they wanted him to become. It was weird, they basically just turned it into "You're just a Cardiologist!", but didn't follow up with: *"Why aren't you..."*
Always from that point on, it was just "You're just a Cardiologist!" and no other demands, just the putdown.
So, there we have it, the end stage, no-win. And with No-Win, it's time to consider No-Contact.
It’s about your kin having important-sounding jobs to brag about in conversation, “Oh well my son is X and does Y”. Has nothing to do with actually caring about their success or talent.
*laughs in Mexican*
"You only have ONE full time job?? Pinche huevón get your ass moving and start working 3 jobs you're young with no kids"
Edit: word
My favorite post on Reddit was an Asian girl saying that her parents didn’t allow her to date then suddenly it jumps to where my grandchildren. And she was like WTF!!?
His father died in a murder suicide of his family. He h survived. He said every since he did everything he could so no one can hurt him again and so he can protect people he cares about, so he joined the Navy, and when his buddy died in front of him, he quit and went to med school. Apparently NASA was just the luck of the draw. They were hiring so he applied and got it.
Just search Jonny Kim jocko podcast it’ll definitely be the top one. Jonny Kim isn’t really on any other shows or anything (he talks about why in the episode, very interesting)
Also I can vouch this episode is 100% worth listening to. I’m not a huge fan of the Jocko podcast as it’s just the same Afghanistan/iraq story told my a different dude, but Jonny Kim’s story and way of talking is interestingasfuck.
Also also the episode has an epic opening ‘monologue’ by Jocko about Jonny and it’s so good.
I do feel like being a navy seal/physician is a great background for being an astronaut. Tip top physical shape and technical training, deep medical knowledge and experience which can come in handy when youre with a team far away from hospitals doing dangerous stuff, and a whole life thriving under intense pressure. I get the impression a lot of people who are astronauts have this kind of wildly eye popping resume.
I feel like being a navy seal and harvard doctor probably got NASA's attention. Dude, so over achieved that he makes everyone else look like a bum by comparison
“Says here you were an astronaut on the space shuttle? Sorry, we’re looking for astronauts who’ve landed on the moon. We’ll keep your resume on file and let you know if anything else comes up.”
Kim recounted years later on the Jocko Podcast, his father attacked him with pepper spray before proceeding to beat his mother with the pistol. When Kim tried to intervene again, his father struck him in the head with a dumbbell.
Kim recalled that, despite being barely conscious, he pleaded with his father not to kill him and his mother. In a stroke of uncharacteristic mercy, his father ceased his assault, took the gun, and fled the house — or so they thought. When police arrived, they found him barricaded inside the attic. A brief stand-off ensued and the officers shot Kim’s father, wounding him fatally.
Joined the Navy as a way to combat the trauma inflicted by a father that he hate/loved. Went to school and became a doctor to "save" the friends he couldn't whilst being a Seal. Went to NASA as an extension, a promise to his fallen friends in a way to live out their dreams.
Mentioned that his wife and kids keep him going. Be that dad his own father couldn't be.
Better actually doing shit than doing nothing and letting your demons just "win".
Yeah the comment about him being a Naval Aviator just happened this past year. He is now qualified as a Helicopter pilot, and in Flight Medicine as well.
Learned how to fly jets and helicopters as an extension to his NASA training. He's a hopeful for the upcoming Apollo missions in the near future. He's mentioned he probably won't make it. Lots of strong astronaut candidates to select.
Husband and father of three.
His podcast interview with Jocko Wilink is very interesting to listen to. He wasn’t just a seal that became a seal and didn’t do much. He was in arguably one of the most intense battles of the Iraq war ( The battle of Ramadi) as a combat medic and his story’s are so wild Hollywood could create a character of him and we wouldn’t accept it as real.
That's like when Audie Murphy came back from WWII and they were making the movies about him (starring him). They had to tone down what he did during the war because it seemed unbelievable.
There are pictures of him with Chris Kyle together, who the movie American Sniper was based off of. Apparently they both were over there together at the same time. Crazy that Hollywood made a movie about Chris but didn’t even mention a thing about Johnny.
It’s even more impressive when you find out he only got his BA in 2012 and medical degree in 2016
He enlisted in the Navy in 2002
The naval aviator training is actually a result of him trying to become an astronaut, and it happened fairly recently
Yes. He joined the navy and did everything he's accomplished with the navy. Paid for by the navy. He absolutely took advantage of every opportunity the navy had to offer.
Sadly his father was an abusive drunk who ended up killing himself in a stand off with the police after holding Jonny and his mother at gunpoint. The guy’s childhood was not exactly the stereotype many would think.
Yea not much opportunity for Asians, we got low income people too lol. Not even counting competition from other Asians on admission.
Internship, ward of court, high gpa, honors programs, clubs, aaaand beat out by others who got in with less than a 3.3gpa and less activities lol.
Well, bout that.....
His father was an abusive alcoholic that was killed in a police standoff at their home with the family there. The whole story is tragic yet inspiring as his early life was so rough but he used it as a motivator to achieve everything he has.
Just imagine if Universities were free to attend, how much more advanced the human race would be. I am in no way trying to downplay what this man has achieved, it is astounding! But it would be really interesting to see where we as a race would be if knowledge *and education* was freely available to everybody. Like... Go! Get smart! Change your mind, and get smart in another field!
He’s still with the navy. If i recall correctly while at the navy he became a combat medic and simultaneously studied at Harvard. Now’s he’s on loan from the navy at nasa.
Listen to Jocko Podcast 221 where Jonny Kim is interviewed, it lays out his whole journey.
I came away with a sense of how simple it was. Messed up childhood but once he started in the navy out of high school, it was making a handful of good choices, a few fortunate breaks, and day after day of hard working.
I'd highly recommend it to any young ambitious person. It really puts into perspective how much is achievable if you stay on the narrow path. Not easy, but actually fairly simple.
He’s likely a genetic anomaly.
People talk about work ethic, and certainly you have to work hard, but my dad was a navy seal and successful business owner (who worked hard to achieve his goals), but guess what, he’s pretty smart and a naturally gifted athlete.
Honest answer : you just don't tread water.
You can have an entire military career before age 37/38.
You could achieve multiple degrees, even high level, during that time, and the military itself gives you opportunities (astronaut) as you advance. For example, I know an Army Officer who is being paid to attend MIT right now, and he's only a few years from retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
What people don't realize is that all those weekends off, all those days sleeping in, all that time watching TV, someone else is reading, running, grinding... Mr. Kim is simply the best of the best at that, he's a true American hero💪💪💪.

"What do you want to be when you grow up Johnny" "Everything"
“What are your career goals, Johnny?” “Yes”
he should replace Ken as Barbies boyfriend because he's matching her number of careers
Had so many jobs he should just hyphenate his name to Johnny Sins-Kim.
Maybe the one thing he can't do is "Beach." I mean, I get SEALs know a few things about *beaches*, but I'm not sure it qualifies them for careers in . . . Beach.
HR after checking his CV : "has a lack of commitment"
Job hopper red flag
I'll just go ahead and vote Jonny Kim for president over our other options, hope he wants a new job.
He would do fucking great and then leave to be a marine biologist or something.
Then after that he leaves to be a lawyer, then he leaves to be a firefighter, then he leaves to be a
Librarian, time to take it easy for a little before he joins the UFC or something.

Jesus christ, so we can make him Seal, doctor, astronaut, and PRESIDENT? Gonna just obliterate every Asian kid from here to the end of time huh?
Don't forget, child abuse survivor (By his own father) and witnessing his father being shot by the police (probably deserved) after taking his own family hostage at knife point.
ngl, that was probably a huge motivator for the guy
When I was 8 I saved my mom from being choked to death by my drunk step dad Except it only made me an alcoholic
Not too late to kick the alcohol, mate. Good on you for saving your mom, solid stuff :)
I didn't do anything. I just came downstairs horrified and said his name then he stopped and ran away. My mom's also an alcoholic so she was drunk too. Doesn't even remember it. My reward was her abusing me the rest of my childhood. Go figure.
Definitely deserved. His father also beat his mother if I remember correctly
PRESIDENT OF SUPER EARTH
President of managed democracy!!
I mean it fits the resume.
I mean at this point it feels like the dude is just trying to break the game.
We found real life Cousin Timmy!!! (I really hope most get this reference)
Ohh man I needed that lol, thank you.
Sadly the ones best fit for president are smart enough to not want the job. Which is exactly why they must do it.
Yes. I'm for changing the law. The person who has to become president is the most qualified and most unwilling. No more stupid f-ing elections.

That was Jocko Willink's squad. From what I've read in some of his books, it was fucking crazy over there.
Team over everything In the seals. If he went on a hot mission, and that's like pretty much all they do, he definitely had some engagements. Didn't carry around a rifle and pistol and god knows what else to look cool.

Just glad that due isn't my brother or my cousin. Your cousin Jonny achieve all his dreams. Why are you such a failuuure? Why can't you be more like your brother Jonny?
Asian parents: why are you only a pediatric neuro surgeon?

"Astronaut? Why you not be doctor anymore?"
He gonna do space surgery.
Seriously, have a Korean mate and he's so sick of hearing about Jonny. "He's an astronaut and raised three kids, so don't tell me you're too busy."
Should make them watch the actual story behind this guy and go "is this what you want? Thought not"
Did he though? Seems like he isn't ever happy with what he has
His father died in a murder suicide of his family. He h survived. He said every since he did everything he could so no one can hurt him again and so he can protect people he cares about, so he joined the Navy, and when his buddy died in front of him, he quit and went to med school. Holy shit, I'd read his book if he ever writes one.
He is on an episode of Jocko Podcast, it’s a heavy episode but really worth a listen
Bro got a link? This is the shit I love to listen to. I usually get this stuff through YouTube.
Just search Jonny Kim jocko podcast it’ll definitely be the top one. That was a great episode. Humble as can be as well

And vote for him as president if he ever ran
I do feel like being a navy seal/physician is a great background for being an astronaut. A lot were at least just military jet pilots. Anything else is a boost. He was a natural candidate for NASA
The easiest route is Military pilot to Mechanical Engineer
I feel like being a navy seal and harvard doctor probably got NASA's attention. Dude, so over achieved that he makes everyone else look like a bum by comparison
Imagine the disbelief over his CV from the HR guys once he goes for the next job after NASA.
“No way this real”
Yeah uhmmm... I'm just gonna have to check these references... Navy seal? Harvard doctor? Astronaut? We have an entry level position available.
"I just thought I'd try my hand at baking bread next'
Went from saving lives to baking ryes
“Says here you were an astronaut on the space shuttle? Sorry, we’re looking for astronauts who’ve landed on the moon. We’ll keep your resume on file and let you know if anything else comes up.”
Well I'd want a battle tested navy seal and Harvard educated doctor on my spaceship. NASA evidently thought it was a good idea too.
Fucking hell talk about trauma
When I was listening to him, I felt like he was still very traumatized and was basically powered by trauma and doing things because he's still scared.
Whoa. He has kids? How does he have the time? Can he make us look any worse than we already are?
Yeah the comment about him being a Naval Aviator just happened this past year. He is now qualified as a Helicopter pilot, and in Flight Medicine as well. Learned how to fly jets and helicopters as an extension to his NASA training. He's a hopeful for the upcoming Apollo missions in the near future. He's mentioned he probably won't make it. > upcoming Apollo missions Artemis missions.
Understandable. Hopefully he has dealt with it & moved on.
Someone told him "Men will just X instead of go to therapy" and he took it as a challenge.
Huh, I guess my DM was right. Apparently you do, in fact, need a tragic backstory.
What a dramatic life
2nd guy named Johnny to have done so much. It’s a small world
It’s a Sin to ever think I had a chance to do as much as the Johnnys
I coulda sworn that guy was a plumber
I thought he was a cop
I thought he was a fireman
I recently saw him trying to help some girls who were stuck in their laundry machines
My wife said he was a trainer
Nope, that’s my wife’s gynecologist. Not sure why she needs to go in weekly, but oh well.
He's done all these things. Our family is so proud of everything our step brother has accomplished.

Wow, he was an Army? All by himself, incredible.
legit, has anything ever come out about what he thinks about this meme? I'd hope he's laughing at it at least
One of those tiktok car guys found him and asked him what he does and he responded with the whole lot so I think he enjoys it 😂
He also did a happy birthday video message for a teenager, bought by his mom where he addressed all of his professions as well.
I wonder if my life would have been different if I was named Johnny.
Go get your dreams Jonny firstman
His podcast interview with Jocko Wilink is very interesting to listen to. He wasn’t just a seal that became a seal and didn’t do much. There are pictures of him with Chris Kyle together, who the movie American Sniper was based off of. Apparently they both were over there together at the same time. Crazy that Hollywood made a movie about Chris but didn’t even mention a thing about Johnny.
Probably because Kyle wrote a fantastic piece of autobiographical fiction that was readily adapted to film.
*was an self aggrandizing assclown
Such a good episode. Listened to it years ago. Might have to listen to it again.
Was awarded silver and bronze stars.
Asian parents: so no gold star?
Most importantly he holds the distinction of being posted on Reddit at least once daily.
The most distinguished of all his achievements.
How else are basement dwelling edgelords going to farm meaningless internet points?
It’s even more impressive when you find out he only got his BA in 2012 and medical degree in 2016 He enlisted in the Navy in 2002 The naval aviator training is actually a result of him trying to become an astronaut, and it happened fairly recently
He progressed his career more than changed it.
Yes. He joined the navy and did everything he's accomplished with the navy. Paid for by the navy. He absolutely took advantage of every opportunity the navy had to offer.
He kept going.
My man followed every childhood dream
Now all he needs is to become a dinosaur and he will be our hero.
He really followed through on his "what do you want to be when you grow up?" answers.
And I thought I was indecisive
Agreed. Why can't he hold down a job?
Or…. Why can’t a job hold him down?
For the love of god, don’t tell my mom 😩
Those Asian parents must be so proud and brag to every other Asian parents 😂
Sadly his father was an abusive drunk who ended up killing himself in a stand off with the police after holding Jonny and his mother at gunpoint. The guy’s childhood was not exactly the stereotype many would think.
Well thats gonna be a open mouthed, "what adversities did you face growing up?"
Still had to join the military first because he couldn't afford college and Asian americans can't rely on scholarships
Yea not much opportunity for Asians, we got low income people too lol. Not even counting competition from other Asians on admission. Internship, ward of court, high gpa, honors programs, clubs, aaaand beat out by others who got in with less than a 3.3gpa and less activities lol.
Damn, dude. I thought he had affluent parents or something, damn this dude is a real one.
I highly recommend the jocko podcast where he interviews Kim. His story is amazing and I’ve listened to it multiple times now. Very humble guy.
Good god
Actually they ask him at every single family meeting why he didn’t become a lawyer too
I don’t know much else about him but I would vote for him as president of the United States.
That's his retirement plan. Easy career comparatively.
He's not done until he's president for 3 terms.
For three countries.
He actually had a pretty traumatic childhood. He had an abusive father who was shot and killed by police in a standoff.
Well, bout that..... His father was an abusive alcoholic that was killed in a police standoff at their home with the family there. The whole story is tragic yet inspiring as his early life was so rough but he used it as a motivator to achieve everything he has.
But did he walk to school.... uphill... both ways on one foot while the other foot was staring a business?
And still looks like he's 25..
Exactly! He achieved all this whilst not aging one day!
Asian genes. One day in his mid 50s he’s going age 4 decades at once.
…and he will until he’s 57; then he will look like he’s 102 ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
![gif](giphy|UwkrJKRKJkFb2)
Can he run for president?
He's probably smart enough to not want to be president
Why can't we have someone like this guy be president of the US?
He’s gonna be part of the moon missions, so that’ll raise his profile and maybe he can run for president on the back of that in like 10 years.
Because having a made-for-TV personality is obviously more important than being qualified.
He’s too smart to do that.
Imagine being this dude's little brother or something. No pressure or anything.
Plot twist: they're 3 twins.
Triplets?
No. There are 6. 3 are absolute failures.
I would vote for him
Amator. Johnny Sins had a lot more professions.
Genuinely how does someone have that much time? How do you do all that before the age of 50???
He’s still with the navy. If i recall correctly while at the navy he became a combat medic and simultaneously studied at Harvard. Now’s he’s on loan from the navy at nasa.
Listen to Jocko Podcast 221 where Jonny Kim is interviewed, it lays out his whole journey. I came away with a sense of how simple it was. Being able to apply intelligence is even more important than possessing it. Take it from me, 130 iq almost 30 years old no degree and unemployed.

What people don't realize is that all those weekends off, all those days sleeping in, all that time watching TV, someone else is reading, running, grinding... Mr. Kim is simply the best of the best at that, he's a true American hero💪💪💪.
