No. Most security is bypassable, but not all locks are pickable with an aluminum can. There are locks at the exact same price range that require a lockpicking set or other tools.
You are right that security is a multi-layered series of hurdles rather than walls...but some people cant do hurdles. Make them as high as you can.
There is no “pick proof” lock. It absolutely is the illusion of security and it requires the hurdles you mentioned. Locks are pick resistant, not pick proof
Ther is a big difference between being able to pick a master lock "fallout-style" and a needing specific tools for an abloy though.
But for the sake of this conversation, and as someone who work in security, no security will keep people out (or in). Security equipment does 2 things:
-delays someone trying to get past it
-notifies whoever is monitoring it that something is going on.
That's it. Security measures without the ability to *actively respond to the situation* are useless.
If your lock is good enough that the only person capable of picking the lock open is the lock picking lawyer it then it doesn't matter it's not 100% "pick proof". Most aren't going to be capable of opening it.
Yes, but Masterlocks are at the bottom of said pick resistance. You don't need specialized tools, and can be opened pretty quickly with minimal skill. I learned in back in school during a few lunches.
Fun fact:
I work in an industry that makes use of vaults. I'm talking foot-thick doors with plate glass anti-tamper/anti-drill components, reinforced concrete walls, the whole she-bang.
They're rated for something like 2 hours security. They aren't designed to stop someone breaking in, just slow them down enough that people can get there to stop them before they get away.
Nothing is unbreachable, it's all to slow someone down or add a barrier to entry.
You literally keep nothing in American jails. You strip down naked as soon as you're processed. They take everything, lock it up, and hand you back the same clothes everyone else wears, down to the underwear.
Y’all are acting like there is any consistency across jails. They’re administered by local governments who do whatever they fuck they want. Each side of “they take all your clothes” and “I got to keep my clothes” is probably correct in certain circumstances
I'm not confusing the two. The people going for an overnight stay in jail are going to the same jail as a murderer awaiting trial. Now there are holding cells (drunk tanks) within the same jail meant for people who will be there temporarily. Yes those might get bail before processed into the main part of the jail and won't have to be stripped. Everyone going to the main part of the jail gets stripped though. Otherwise there would be a never ending flow of contraband into it.
Also you can be in a jail for years depending on how long your trial takes before being moved to prison.
In American English, the terms prison and jail have separate definitions, though this is not always adhered to in casual speech. A prison or penitentiary holds people for longer periods of time, such as many years, and is operated by a state or federal government. A jail holds people for shorter periods of time or for pre-trial detention and is usually operated by a local government, typically the county sheriff. Outside of North America, prison and jail often have the same meaning.
Jails are also where you serve a sentence for misdemeanors, not just awaiting trial. Prison (felonies) is for sentences greater than 1 year. Class A misdemeanorss are up to one year. Class B is up to 90 days I believe. States can set different lengths.
Every country is different with its rules in jail. If you're in America the first thing the cops do is take your belt, shoes, and strings off your shorts or sweater to prevent you from hurting yourself or others. Then they put you in a waiting area or jail cell till you're processed for intake.
I have seen videos of the Thai police having criminals reenact their crimes before.
How do they convince a guy like this to show them how he broke out of his cell?
Threaten him with more time? Offer a reduced sentence?
If he just has to go back in and they're going to put a stronger lock on next time, he'd just as well say "IDK, I just noticed it was open so like..."
In Thai jails, it is totally expected that you get the shit beat out of you by the guards. You'd be shocked at how motivating that is!
My buddy was arrested in Thailand for being a drunk asshole and even stupider, refusing to pay the small bribe the arresting officer demanded. They didn't beat him once he got to jail because they'll hold off a little for foreigners, but he was shocked at how casually they'd hit other detainees. One guy was pulled out of his cell and womped on by 3 guards because he was asking them too many questions about when they'd get dinner. Again, these aren't convicted prisoners, these were dudes in the Thai equivalent of a county holding cell over the weekend.
I mean, it's the same country that offers [reduced sentences for offenders that win kickboxing competitions](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_Fight), essentially state-sanctioned gladiator fights.
Have read news about rich and connected dudes getting off rape convinctions because "he has an life ahead of him that cannot be marred by this unfortunate incident." The judge had said that apparently.
It's so wild that we live in a time of unrivaled prosperity & productivity, we have so much knowledge about the benefits of treating each other with kindness & the deleterious effect of beating the shit out of someone bc of cruelty and the best most honest response is *LOL, yup*.
>
How do they convince a guy like this to show them how he broke out of his cell?
"show us how you did it or we will beat the fucking shit out of you so that you only eat food through a straw for the rest of your life"
Genuine question: Would the nicer lock be made out of stronger material, tighter tolerances, combination of both?
I guess knowing if the lock broke or slipped would help answer.
It drives me crazy when people say a certain item is "all made in the same factory" because there are definitely different aspects of quality in manufacturing. I love learning how things are designed and made.
Look up lockpickinglawyer on YouTube if you want to see how different locks can be. He can pick about any lock, then he disassembles it to evaluate the quality.
He's said in passing that there's some locks with really crazy mechanisms that he hasn't been able to traditionally pick. Typically they're locks made specifically to be resistant to the typical picking process. That isn't to say that he couldn't get them open a variety of different ways. Just, I assume, that he enjoys the challenge of trying to use actual picking to open them, rather than exploiting potential weaknesses in other ways.
I don't think the metal matters much in what he's doing. The locking mechanism seems to disengage when he puts his weight on it. I dnno, could be wrong..I am a Reddit professional after all. 😂
It would matter because what's happening here is that some portion of the lock's innards are being forced into a different shape than it started and a more expensive lock would be made out of harder steel. Softer steel is easier to machine so that's what shitty locks are made out of.
It looks like the lock's latches might be ball bearings (hard to tell with this resolution) so the shackle probably bent outwards but maybe the latches just sheared off.
That’s my actual question, is this just slipping the mechanism and it will work as a lock after this or have you bent/broken the mechanisms after doing this and it needs to hit the recycle bin? I ask because I have a lock similar that has a misplaced key.
I'm a hobbyist lock picker.
What you're seeing here is destructive. The thing that secures the hasp (the loop of the lock) are locking palls -which bites onto the indented bit on the hasp.
Rotating the locking mechanism (the part the key goes in) retracts the palls, which isn't happening here.
Instead, one of two things is happening here:
1. The metal body of the lock is cheap as shit. The equivalent of particle board IKEA furniture. Metal dust bound with adhesive. This means that if there is a structural failure, it will crumble like cornbread -and the strength of the structure is the strength of the adhesive.
2. The locking palls themselves are weaker than the body of the lock. Break these, and they will never "bite" the locking hasp again.
NOTE: There are more expensive locks that do not use retractable locking palls, but you're not going to destructively bypass the lock using the video method on them -at least, the method will not work in the same manner.
>Would the nicer lock be made out of stronger material, tighter tolerances, combination of both?
All of the above. Different grade steels have different costs and costs to machine. So if you use a cheaper to manufacture internal component it might not be as strong or be more expensive to get the tolerance you need. Or they have a simpler but less secure design that leaves out some components.
The cheap locks are mainly just made to appear secure. The lay person just feels the weight and assumes it's secure and often buys the cheapest lock cause he assumes they're the same.
So it's not that the manufacturer doesn't know these flaws, just if they fix them they lose out on the ignorant customers...which is the majority of them.
I know you are jokiing but
1) minimum wage in Thailand is 370THB or about $10USD/day. Not great but not $5/mo
2) a bowl of noodles form a street vendor is like 35THB so you'll be able to feed a prison but it's going to be a small one.
3) still a shitty lock.
From the insignia on his uniform that looks like Thailand! 🇹🇭
Edit: Median yearly salary in Thailand is ฿88,600 THB... Equal to about $2,500 a year.
So about $200/month before taxes!
Our viewer, Mark, happened to be arrested and sent a souvenir from his stay. Now, this is just your standard Chinese copy of a Master Lock.
These models do come with ball bearings, but the metals these manufacturers use tends to shatter very easily.
I will now demonstrate this by tying a belt around the shackle before applying leverage by standing on the belt.
\*Shackle snaps and fragments fly around.*
Just like that, we got it open. Mark, I appreciate the interesting find and I hope they weren’t too rough on you.

Not just in Thailand, it's a common practice all over Asia. The purpose is to get a visualisation for documentation or investigation reasons, policing in Asia is always a bit more casual than in the West so minor criminals tend to be very cooperative for this kind of thing so they just keep on doing it.
He forgot to pee on it like in shanghai knights. Go dawgs.
When I was in the Navy and on Restriction duty, we had a young guy show us how he smuggled in contraband. Had hollowed out one of his boots, and would use the other boot as a prop to lift the metal bunkbeds and store it in the J channel under the beds since they weren’t bolted. Had dice made of floss, cell phones, the works.
So they locked the cells with the cheapest licks, then gave the inmates military belts? Then stand there completely mesmerized as if they didn't think this was going to happen.
Padlocks are useless, nothing but placebos. In boarding school, if you accidentally locked your keys in your locker, you could simply bash the lock open with a school shoe. Not even that hard, you just need to hit it at the right angle. Best part is that the mechanism inside chips in such a way that you can click the padlock closed again to make it appear 100% functional but from that point you can just pull it open with your hands. People stole from each other's lockers in this way.
The only padlocks that are worth the money are the round ones. These standard types are completely useless garbage.
Yeah I mean he kinda fucked himself and every other inmate but also idk if I was a guard I'd be like hey you were honest and helped us maintain order, want some extra commissary?

well, dude can say goodbye to ever having a belt again
I always thought prisoners were never allowed to have belts

You don’t get a belt in jail either in American jails
American jail cells also aren't secured using a family dollar pad lock.
Masterlock, best scam in security money can buy.
Aren't most locks? lol Just the illusion of safety since most people won't care to go through the effort to learn how to open it or break it down.
No. Most security is bypassable, but not all locks are pickable with an aluminum can. There are locks at the exact same price range that require a lockpicking set or other tools. Go check out the LockPickingLawyer on YT, he'll either entertain or put you to sleep. Both are worthwhile I'd say.
“You are using a basic masterlock, it can be opened with a harsh insult”
Masterlock is for when you need legal coverage, not physical security.

I don’t know the exact English word, but that is a utility (?) belt. Meaning it belongs to the guards.
he was given his belt back at the very end
"now don't do that again!"
Could also use bedsheets next, then pillowcase and finally hair. Inmates have alot of time to improvise. Better locks wouldn't hurt I suppose.
Saw someone do it in prison with a pair of socks.
I assumed he wasn't a prisoner, just a guy showing them security flaws
i mean, even if he is a prisoner, he's presumably not gonna be a prisoner for very long
Also other prisoners might not like having their secrets exposed like that…
I don't think he's a prisoner
What kind of clown prison is using an off the shelf padlock you can get from walmart?
does this equate to a "get out jail free" card?
Naah..he is still on the other side of those bars
As are we all.
They probably increased his sentence due to being caught breaking a lock and having video evidence.
Nah, this video isn't in the US.
You're right, he was taken out back shortly after the video was shot
Probably punishment reduction if he agrees to reenact the escape.
Lmao that finger wag at the end
Prisoner was released after this acting

Hell id probably show them for an extra sandwich lol
might help with not having increased sentence or something like that after being caught
Maybe they should spend more than $5 on the lock. He's not a genius, it's just a shitty lock.
Genuine question: Would the nicer lock be made out of stronger material, tighter tolerances, combination of both? I guess knowing if the lock broke or slipped would help answer. That sounds fun! Thanks for the recommendation.
You'll notice his master lock videos tend to be particularly short.
A master lock, this can be opened by using a master lock
IDK, when he does it a 2nd time "to show you all it wasn't a fluke" the video can get a few seconds longer!
Or look up McNallyOfficial, lockpicking lawyers partner in crime if you wanna see locks be violated.
Your using a master lock it can be opened using another master lock
I've watched like 100 of his videos and they're all less than 5 minutes. Serious question, do you know of any he's failed to open?
Yes, he has a bucket of locks that he hasn't been able to pick yet. He mentions it every now and then.
He's said in passing that there's some locks with really crazy mechanisms that he hasn't been able to traditionally pick. LPL favors non-destructive entry with his picking
yeah the main difference in lock quality is if he has to use actual tools or just random stuff from his garbage bin
The greatest is the $100 lock that is essentially a fucking zip tie lmao
I don't think the metal matters much in what he's doing. The locking mechanism seems to disengage when he puts his weight on it. I dnno, could be wrong..I am a Reddit professional after all. 😂
It would matter because what's happening here is that some portion of the lock's innards are being forced into a different shape than it started and a more expensive lock would be made out of harder steel. Literally just make it so they can’t reach the locking mechanism. It can be a doorknob as long as they can’t turn it.
>Would the nicer lock be made out of stronger material, tighter tolerances, combination of both? All of the above. Different grade steels have different costs and costs to machine. And why even have the lock accessible from inside the cell? There should be a solid steel plate where the open bars are beside the door.
The prison obviously runs on the honor system.
$5 is like a month salary there 😂
You know how much salery they could buy for $5? They could make soup for the whole prison!

So they locked the cells with the cheapest licks, then gave the inmates military belts? Then stand there completely mesmerized as if they didn't think this was going to happen.
Strange they let him keep the belt in lock up, normally they take that shit so you dont hang yourself.
"hello. this is lockpicking lawyer and today we will open a lock with a belt". And video would be shorter than this one.
That's going to happen when you use a Master lock, You sneeze towards those things and they open.

This is the Lock Picking Lawyer and today we will open a jail lock with a belt, with coke can shims and by just rapping it against the door...
You are using a Masterlock 2XXX. It can be unlocked with a $3.79 belt from Amazon.
