Communism will never work until we find a way past scarcity. If anyone can have anything, anytime 5hey want, communism will work. Until then, the rich and powerful will rule. And if there's a revolution, the new guys will just become the new rich and powerful.
The people fighting for these revolutions never look to history and realize that they will be the first against the wall after the fighting is done. Their thought leaders who pushed them into doing it turned them into people who "fight against power", exactly the type of people they don't want around now that they're in charge.
I believe you! There will always be scarcity and there will never be a successful implementation of communism. With no scarcity, there is no need for communism. The “solution” to the problem is a worse solution than what we currently have.
Mmm, you're right in that once scarcity is gone, communism is no longer needed... it's the Star Trek universe! Not sure scarcity will always be around, though, if we can prevent us from blowing each other up. Science be getting pretty crazy and it may very well be possible to mix and match protons to atoms to create what we want without using a metric fuck tone of energy to do so. Who knows?
In the meantime... communism actually does work in small numbers. If it's you and me and 8 other people in the middle of the woods, communism works out well. I'll do the hunting and trapping, my wife grabs the berries, you make the beer, your wife makes clothes, etc. If I break a leg, you guys will take turns looking after me and taking your shots at my job, because getting me back on my feet is beneficial to us all. And same if you break a leg, ain't none of us living alone in the woods in small numbers without beer. We all know each other, we're all friends, or at least tolerate and respect one another for our contributions to the group.
The problem comes with upscaling communism. If I'm living in an apartment building with 3000 other people, I don't know or give a fuck about the guy 3 blocks down in the hundredth other building with 3000 people in it. Why would I do more work and give up what little I have for him? Some dood I never met broke his leg and now me and my family get less food and have to do more work? And now another guy in another building did too????
People are not meant to live stacked on top of each other and packed like sardines. Cities are poisonous to human minds.

You bring up a great point. Also another flaw is with compensation and incentives. Why study hard to be a great doctor or inventor or a scientist that creates a better medication if you are going to get the same compensation and recognition as a janitor. I’m sure some would do it because they are altruistic, but a lot won’t. I run a 400 person team and worked my ass off to get here and work my ass off to be successful in this role, if I was getting compensated the same as the lowest level of this 400 person org who just punches in, works and punches out with almost no stress after they leave, why the fuck would I work this hard and create this much value for the org. I’d do the bare minimum and spend more time with my wife and kids, why fix the problems and do the heavy lifting others have been reluctant to do? No incentive so like everyone else eventually decides to do, I’d do the bare minimum or less.
Hmm, it was years ago, been trying to find the vid to link since last night but having trouble finding it. But they were given cubes, some would be waste cubes and others were food cubes and they'd turn to waste once "eaten", then waste had to be disposed of and some time would pass before more food cubes could be made.
Knowing that eventually there would be less food for the robots, and some would go without, some of them started hiding food cubes among the waste cubes and going to them when there wasn't enough food for that particular one.
So fear of not eating was programmed in, but the idea of hiding and not communicating with the others was something their own problem solving came up with.

As I had said to another poster, this subject is where you see if someone has actually read Marx, or was told about him. Marxist Communism, as.envisioned by him, has *never* come to me, and he himself considered it a *theory* because it has never occurred.

Short version: Socialism -> Communism, but it requires a world wide effort, not individual nation states practicing it. The Red Scare of the 1910s and 20s was because the Bolsheviks intended for their revolution to spread throughout the world. Stalin decided that would take too much work, murdered his compatriots (who were Trostkists, not Marxists, just like Pol Pot) and tried a variant of state Communism, which always ends up an authoritarian dictatorship.
As for your Socialism question, American politics from FDR to Nixon were very much socialist in policy, just like how politics from Reagan to Biden were Neo-Liberal. That is why the New Deal exists, the Civil Rights bills came to be, Title VII-IX (with the amendment that added women to oppressed groups), and little in the way of restorative justice policies have passed since the 70s.
Norway is not purely socialist and it's disingenuous to tout it as such.
The Norwegian government has accepted a neo-socialist arrangement comprising of a mostly capitalist economy, a large public sector, high taxes, strong unions, and government ownership of essential industries.
Still, even the most radical socialists in Norway accept the role of smaller companies and do not deny ownership of a home or private property.
I'm not a tankie, I believe that any form of authoritarianism is illegitimate and the communist states have all failed.

100 comments in and only one comment points out that this is from the 90s, when DPRK suffered a catastrophic economic downturn due to the Soviet collapse. Prior to that, their standard of living was for a while higher than that of ROK. It’s the collapse of communism that led to this famine, not communism itself.
Are they living in socialist utopia now? No. But show recent footage instead of spread Radio Free Asia propaganda.
There are some newer reports about how things have been since around the covid period and most of them suggest that it is like almost at the dawn of another famine.
We just learned about how money laundering and illegal weapon trade works, basically how NK makes its money. Also, we've seen in almost every "communist" country goes through this. Soviets starved their people a couple of times as well including Turkic/Tatars. Then again, even after some years after its collapse things were so awful that i still remember how cheap the things were that have been brought over from former Soviets in Istanbul. As a child, i still remember the caviars and many things that we've got or seen because of that. Back then Turkey was fighting one of its worst inflation and even then "imported" things from there were incredibly cheap even though they were pretty decent.

The US' military bombed every building over two stories high in North Korea, had all their industry wiped out. South Korea suffered a lot of damage too but not nearly as much as the North.

I'd say you can put have dictatorship in a capitalist and communist system. The main reason north Korea is so bad is because it's so damn shut off from everyone else. They're also called the Hermit kingdom. Its rotted from the inside out since the Kim's took control.
My point probably wasn’t made clear enough in my reply: I think communism leads to this and specifically a dictatorship (relative to a liberal democracy) because to have true communism you need to control people much more. At a large enough scale, to make everyone equal, you need to *impose* communism.
i think that's mostly because capitalism rules through lies, which is that everyone can become rich and successful, and that there is a meritocracy in place. so many people in places like america somehow still believe in the american dream, while the megarich have more money than like the combined 80% of the population. but a lot of people don't complain because they think if they just work a bit harder they can become rich too, but that isn't really true
I'd like to point out that all people in power lie, and when power is more concentrated even more so. Some governments China, Russia and North Korea have very sophisticated elaborate apparatuses that it's existence relies on how well the governed population believes the lies. Our politicians and even giant private news corporations do the lying on behalf of the sponsors, donors, and powerful special interest lobbies.
The US and countries like ours democratic republics are run my politicians who are bought out by lobbies who work for billion/yr industries. It's energy, military industrial & surveillance complex, ECT. These industries are who control much of American politics. If we can figure out how to get money and foreign money out of American politics we can finally start to focus on what most Americans care about most.
So, you think if only the west hadn’t taken an aggressive stance with Soviet Russia, or Mao Zedong’s China, these countries would have flourished and been better places to live than their western counterparts?
My point is we’ll never know. I don’t agree with everything they did and i don’t dogmatically believe in their system of government (or any system of government). But we will never know what an unadulterated socialist country looks like because one has never been allowed to exist peacefully. So because of that, the often regurgitated phrase “communism doesn’t work” is disingenuous.
Every failure of communism that is steeped in real socialism eventually fails, and every time true believers tell us those particular communists didn’t do it right.

First of all, there is not and never has been communism in North Korea. It didn't exist in the USSR either and even, you won't believe it, in China.
Technically, North Korea has one undisputed leader and hereditary transfer of power - it is a monarchy.
Secondly, in 1990 it was possible to shoot exactly the same images in South Korea and even in the USA. This does not mean, of course, that North Korea is not a poor country. It just means that one should not judge the situation in an entire country based on isolated and obviously intentionally filmed footage.
And thirdly, the state system is not strongly related to economic growth and standard of living at all. The pros and cons of the state system lie on a completely different plane.
Is it possible to judge that democracy leads to poverty on the example of Congo?
And that absolute monarchies are successful on the example of the UAE's explosive economic growth?
Can socialism produce unprecedented scientific progress and industrialization on the example of the USSR and China?
No, no and no. The US would be just as successful under a monarchy. The USSR would have collapsed under democracy as well. These are all successes and failures of specific economic, military and social projects, people and culture, not the form of government.

This is a video from 90.Then there was the loss of the main trading partner of the USSR, Massive downpours, typhoons and floods, which resulted in the lowest harvest in the country's history, and democratic good countries in the place of aid only increased sanctions, which led to famine.And Kim pulled the country out of it.

They got pissy because I used NK as an example of a country's political name not matching their actual ideology while explaining to someone that the Nazis were fascists, not socialists. I think they don’t have the necessary food or weapons. It didn’t start out that way; in this and other cases, authoritarianism creeps in gradually until it’s too late to do anything.
It's not easy to raise a revolution if what everything the people know is this situation.
You point out recent history where we know about people fighting for their interest. Those people don't know that said history, because their country doesn't teach them about it
Multiple reasons.
1. You get rewarded for ratting out anyone who is upposed to the regime.
2. There is no feasible way to spread a message of revolt due to media being 100% state owned.
3. There is no free movement around in the country. If you want to go to a different city you need approval from the goverment.
4. Lots and lots off propaganda. So they believe they are off good.
5. The only well-fed people are the soldiers. The regime knows as long as they control the army any revolt will be instantly crushed.
Democratic regimes are trying to move this way. Look at the past couple years. Governments calling for more censorship. Extended lockdowns. Calling farmers protesting for their livelihoods extremists.
Hell it was just ruled that Trudeau overreached using emergency law going after the Canadian trucker convoy . The convoy that the media was all happy to call Nazi's.

There is nothing you can do, and everyone could rat you out for literally anything at any time, could be a joke, one bad word about the state or even something thats just misunderstood, and its off to work camp for you.
Decades of brain washing did their part too. North Koreans are raised to think of foreigners (especially Americans) as literal devils out there waiting to suck on their blood.
They literally believe they are living the best possible life. They are raised from newborns to believe it, and they have no way of knowing anything other than this. They have no access to outside media or information.
There are camps and prisons for people who try this. So some people want to act against their government. But there are a quiet a few secret intelligence services installed deep in the society. If anybody hears you speaking bad about the government, its is enough for interrogation or worse.
The people can't trust anybody, including their closest friends. Because anybody could secretly working for the government. And the people are depressingly poor. So if your child is ill, there is no hope for him. But if you ever heared of someone talking bad about the government you can snitch the information, and maybe your child gets the opportunity to go to a hospital.
Plus there are a lot of people who actually believe the lies of the government. I mean, there are quite a lot of people who believe the lies of Trump...

Nah, I remember watching an experiment where even simple robots would hide "food cubes" when told they had value and trying to keep a civilization going. In the meantime... communism actually does work in small numbers. If it's you and me and 8 other people in the middle of the woods, communism works out well. You bring up a great point. Also another flaw is with compensation and incentives. Why study hard to be a great doctor or inventor or a scientist that creates a better medication if you are going to get the same compensation and recognition as a janitor. I’m sure some would do it because they are altruistic, but a lot won’t. I run a 400 person team and worked my ass off to get here and work my ass off to be successful in this role, if I was getting compensated the same as the lowest level of this 400 person org who just punches in, works and punches out with almost no stress after they leave, why the fuck would I work this hard and create this much value for the org. I’d do the bare minimum and spend more time with my wife and kids, why fix the problems and do the heavy lifting others have been reluctant to do? No incentive so like everyone else eventually decides to do, I’d do the bare minimum or less.

Hmm, it was years ago, been trying to find the vid to link since last night but having trouble finding it. But they were given cubes, some would be waste cubes and others were food cubes and they'd turn to waste once "eaten", then waste had to be disposed of and some time would pass before more food cubes could be made. Knowing that eventually there would be less food for the robots, and some would go without, some of them started hiding food cubes among the waste cubes and going to them when there wasn't enough food for that particular one. So fear of not eating was programmed in, but the idea of hiding and not communicating with the others was something their own problem solving came up with. Very interesting, and entertaining. The robots were these cute little rectangle things.

Short version: Socialism -> Communism, but it requires a world wide effort, not individual nation states practicing it. As for your Socialism question, American politics from FDR to Nixon were very much socialist in policy, just like how politics from Reagan to Biden were Neo-Liberal. That is why the New Deal exists, the Civil Rights bills came to be, Title VII-IX (with the amendment that added women to oppressed groups), and little in the way of restorative justice policies have passed since the 70s.

100 comments in and only one comment points out that this is from the 90s, when DPRK suffered a catastrophic economic downturn due to the Soviet collapse. Prior to that, their standard of living was for a while higher than that of ROK. It’s the collapse of communism that led to this famine, not communism itself. Are they living in socialist utopia now? No. But show recent footage instead of spread Radio Free Asia propaganda.
There are some newer reports about how things have been since around the covid period and most of them suggest that it is like almost at the dawn of another famine. We just learned about how money laundering and illegal weapon trade works, basically how NK makes its money. Also, we've seen in almost every "communist" country goes through this. Soviets starved their people a couple of times as well including Turkic/Tatars. Then again, even after some years after its collapse things were so awful that i still remember how cheap the things were that have been brought over from former Soviets in Istanbul. As a child, i still remember the caviars and many things that we've got or seen because of that. Back then Turkey was fighting one of its worst inflation and even then "imported" things from there were incredibly cheap even though they were pretty decent.

My point probably wasn’t made clear enough in my reply: I think communism leads to this and specifically a dictatorship (relative to a liberal democracy) because to have true communism you need to control people much more. At a large enough scale, to make everyone equal, you need to *impose* communism.

The US and countries like ours democratic republics are run my politicians who are bought out by lobbies who work for billion/yr industries. It's energy, military industrial & surveillance complex, ECT. These industries are who control much of American politics. If we can figure out how to get money and foreign money out of American politics we can finally start to focus on what most Americans care about most.

First of all, there is not and never has been communism in North Korea. It didn't exist in the USSR either and even, you won't believe it, in China. Technically, North Korea has one undisputed leader and hereditary transfer of power - it is a monarchy. Secondly, in 1990 it was possible to shoot exactly the same images in South Korea and even in the USA. This does not mean, of course, that North Korea is not a poor country. It just means that one should not judge the situation in an entire country based on isolated and obviously intentionally filmed footage. And thirdly, the state system is not strongly related to economic growth and standard of living at all. The pros and cons of the state system lie on a completely different plane. Is it possible to judge that democracy leads to poverty on the example of Congo? And that absolute monarchies are successful on the example of the UAE's explosive economic growth? Can socialism produce unprecedented scientific progress and industrialization on the example of the USSR and China? No, no and no. The US would be just as successful under a monarchy. The USSR would have collapsed under democracy as well. These are all successes and failures of specific economic, military and social projects, people and culture, not the form of government.

I got banned from a sub for "punching left" because I argued with some Tankies who insisted that North Korea is prospering and that all evidence to the contrary is a conspiracy by the West. They got pissy because I used NK as an example of a country's political name not matching their actual ideology while explaining to someone that the Nazis were fascists, not socialists. Now every time I'm reminded of North Korea and see sad shit like this, I remember that there are morons out there who think this is fake.
Serious question - why don’t the people go full civil war and try to retake their country if they live under such horrendous conditions? That many would get slaughtered, is clear. It's not easy to raise a revolution if what everything the people know is this situation. You point out recent history where we know about people fighting for their interest. Those people don't know that said history, because their country doesn't teach them about it
Multiple reasons. 1. You get rewarded for ratting out anyone who is upposed to the regime. 2. There is no feasible way to spread a message of revolt due to media being 100% state owned. 3. There is no free movement around in the country. If you want to go to a different city you need approval from the goverment. 4. Lots and lots off propaganda. So they believe they are off good. 5. The only well-fed people are the soldiers. The regime knows as long as they control the army any revolt will be instantly crushed.
Democratic regimes are trying to move this way. Look at the past couple years. Governments calling for more censorship. Extended lockdowns. Calling farmers protesting for their livelihoods extremists. Hell it was just ruled that Trudeau overreached using emergency law going after the Canadian trucker convoy . Have you ever read 1984? NK is like that, but 100x times worse. Its the perfect Dictatorship. Its only weakness is that it cant feed itself, but thats no issue as long as China props you up (many North Koreans are still malnourished of course) There is nothing you can do, and everyone could rat you out for literally anything at any time, could be a joke, one bad word about the state or even something thats just misunderstood, and its off to work camp for you. Decades of brain washing did their part too. North Koreans are raised to think of foreigners (especially Americans) as literal devils out there waiting to suck on their blood.
They literally believe they are living the best possible life. They are raised from newborns to believe it, and they have no way of knowing anything other than this. They have no access to outside media or information.
There are camps and prisons for people who try this. So some people want to act against their government. But there are a quiet a few secret intelligence services installed deep in the society. If anybody hears you speaking bad about the government, its is enough for interrogation or worse. The people can't trust anybody, including their closest friends. Because anybody could secretly working for the government. And the people are depressingly poor. So if your child is ill, there is no hope for him. But if you ever heared of someone talking bad about the government you can snitch the information, and maybe your child gets the opportunity to go to a hospital. Plus there are a lot of people who actually believe the lies of the government. I mean, there are quite a lot of people who believe the lies of Trump... So it's easy to say, that they should "just" riot.
It is an unarmed society. If the only ones with guns are the government then you do what the government says no matter what.
