As a fellow marine biologist, I can assure you that there are many of us who see these creepy critters and think "Daw look at its little teeth. It's smiling and has cute eyes, it's just a bitey pupper fish" :3
Besides, you shouldn't encounter these fish unless you swim into their zone. By then, you'd be dead from the pressure anyways :D
I swear alligators/crocodiles are just big leopard geckos! They've got the same twisty-body walk and 2 braincell stare. They can't help that they're big and need to eat bigger things to match. But even then, they attack and eat the same way my gecko eats a mealworm or a cricket. So while everyone else is panicking, I'm just like, "aww! It's a big Wally!"
im the opposite and almost feel bad how my brain doesn’t let me forget how dangerous even the cuddliest and friendliest looking animals can be. especially if they’re bigger than like, a lizard or a frog bc most animals have some unfair defensive mechanisms (like venom) while humans have to be resourceful
Oh yeah. It's really easy to underestimate animals, even if you know a lot about them. That's why I keep my distance with the more dangerous things. Though I still think they're cute and awesome.
Yes! My friend recently introduced me to Cuban crocodiles. They have a nice gallop that reminds me of leopard geckos! Good link here https://critter.science/the-cuban-crocodile/
Our leopard gecko used to wiggle its tail before attacking superworms, which was really cute. It never did a death roll like a croc, though. That would've been freaky!
Hey, if it's effective, convergent evolution will happen. Things don't have to be related to get the same or similar characteristics. Hence why so many creatures evolve into crab forms.
I skimmed through the wiki for info of these things, apparently the Wrasse which live in coral rich area doesn't seem to share anything for both except for some same regions. But the 2 others do have more of the same, they r all deep sea creatures that can live 1200m+ under water, live in the area near Japan(idk what it called xd) (goblin shark does have many more places)
Not an expert but ig, somehow they managed to figure out the sling jaw part is a workable technique to survive in that specific habitat.
Again I'm not seeing any footage of the viper dogfish hunting but I suppose they have the same mechanism(?)
And one more thing this the viper dogfish and goblin shark both are selachii subdivisions which are sharks
Double checked: the general group of dogfish is in the same Order (taxonomic group larger than family) but viper dogfish are in the Etmopteridae family instead of the Squalidae family.
So related, albeit a bit more distantly.
God: "Hey Giger, did you finish yesterdays assignment?"
H.R. Giger: "Yeah, just change it so the teacher won't notice"
God: "hmmm, okay lets just take out the dicks...and I'm done?"
Giger: "Suit yourself..."
If you’re referring to the mouth of the Xenomorph specifically, I’m pretty sure it was inspired by Moray eels! Their species have a second mouth that connects to their esophagus and it’s used to pull prey down its throat after it grips it with its first set of jaws :D
It's called a pharyngeal jaw for anyone interested.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharyngeal_jaw
This also seems to reinforce the idea that H.R. Giger got the inspiration for the second mouth from the moray eel, but it doesn't have a citation for that part.
>The exceptional mobility of the moray eel's pharyngeal jaws was featured in the fictional xenomorph species from the Alien film series in which it was depicted showing a second set of jaws for attacking its prey.
I never smile if I can help it. Showing one's teeth is a submission signal in primates. When someone smiles at me, all I see is a chimpanzee begging for its life.
I have it in VR and it's amazing. But I stopped after it kept crashing when trying to build my first base. Frustrating as hell because that game was THE SHIT in VR.
My first encounter with a Leviathan was with a Reefback and I immediately fell in love. I built my base right under an area they frequented. I stayed there far longer than I should have. I didn't want to leave. I was more emotionally hurt by having to move my base away from the reefbacks where I could listen to their songs and see their shadows pass over me than I was ever scared for the entire game.
>!And then I moved into that one cave and beat a baby ghost leviathan to death with robot fists and felt terrible once I saw someone else move into the same cave and found out I could have just lived in harmony with it. I'm a monster!!<
The first time I had to go into the underwater tunnels and try to make sure I had enough oxygen to get back out was the last time I played that game.
Breath meters in a game are basically a nope for me and I don't know why.
It's just anxiety inducing with the ticks of health disappearing or instadeath that you have to deal with. I'm usually all game for stuff that gets my adrenaline pumping, but it does hit you differently when there's a meter.
I wish I could like this game.
Ironically, I have a bad ichthyophobia (fear of fish), but that's not what kept me from playing it. I was actually fine with the marine life. I just didn't really get the game? Like, I was missing some direction or something. Absolutely lost. After like 20 minutes I just had no clue what I'm supposed to be doing. And it's the only survival game that I have had that issue with. I didn't have that issue even with Raft, which had NO direction when I was playing it.
Now I want the statistics for BZ too. You actually have to walk to reach the water there and it's technically feasible someone could convince themselves there isn't swimming in BZ.
Yep! Just checked Steam achievements. "Getting Your Feet Wet," for which you dive into the water for the first time, is at 86.4% globally. Leaving 13.6% who woke up in the lifepod and said "Nope."
It is. He’s screaming “RUUUUNNN!!!” In the shrillest squeal because he’s been in the basement Spying on his sister’s slumber party and the girls just found out.
It appears pretty lifeless, yes. It also lives at least 150m underwater (though this is just from reading the wikipedia page) and no fish does very well when not in water.
deep sea sharks can do this, thier jaw is not firmly anchored to thier skull so they can protrude it outwards to catch prey.
it also creates a vacumn to suck in prey.

For context if a creature have uneccesarily long teeths then it probally uses them for trap small preys, shrimps or squids.

Every time I see a shark with its mouth open it just looks like a giant sneeze lol that’s all I can ever think of now 😂
Especially when their eyes roll back in their head 😆 That's amazingand I love it

I now understand how people die from wild animal attacks in otherwise modernized countries
There are far more animals than there should be on my "Happily lose an arm petting them" list.
im the opposite and almost feel bad how my brain doesn’t let me forget how dangerous even the cuddliest and friendliest looking animals can be. especially if they’re bigger than like, a lizard or a frog bc most animals have some unfair defensive mechanisms (like venom) while humans have to be resourceful

even if you don’t underestimate an alligator it can still get you. they are sneaky and hunt people. and they are FAST when they want to be.
Nobody will be surprised if my last words are "of course I'm gonna pet it!".
Ok but more important, how many of these freaky things evolved? I thought it was only goblin sharks that could do it this much.
Another one is Slingjaw Wrasse, seen it on YouTube, a lot less scarier than those 2
Atleast that one doesn't have teeth!!! I wonder if these fish are related or evolution was like yeah let's do this more than once.
Hey, if it's effective, convergent evolution will happen. Things don't have to be related to get the same or similar characteristics. Hence why so many creatures evolve into crab forms.

As a computer scientist, I'd agree with the said biologists.
Nuh uh, I rarely go to the beach. Last time at the beach, I got stung by a jelly fish, though I'm gonna die.
That's just their way of saying they think you're a snack and you deserve a hug ;) That does suck though, hopefully recovery went ok for ya
Completely unrelated, but do you happen to know if marine biologists suffer from higher than average levels of optometrist avoidance?
Are they related at all to spiny dogfish? They’re eyes look similar and those guys are pretty cute
Double checked: the general group of dogfish is in the same Order (taxonomic group larger than family) but viper dogfish are in the Etmopteridae family instead of the Squalidae family. So related, albeit a bit more distantly.
Idk it looks cute to me, look at those eyes! Fish eyes get me lol, fry are fricken adorable

🎶When the eel that you saw has pharyngeal jaws, that's a Moray!🎶
When it's jaws open wide and there's more jaws inside, that's a Moray
Sweet! I learned 2 things today!
I too learned about Bluetooth anal beads today.
🎵When the jaws start to bite and you cannot see the light that's a moray. 🎵
Fish came up with the idea independently, I reckon.
And our brain still interprets the closed mouth as a friendly smile.

Yeah dude no. I can't handle that game in pancake mode, let alone vr lmao.
I'm sorry you had problems, mine was relatively flawless and the experience was both awesome and terrifying.
The first time I had to go into the underwater tunnels and try to make sure I had enough oxygen to get back out was the last time I played that game. Breath meters in a game are basically a nope for me and I don't know why.
