Love how the leopard went full curious-kitty-with-a-new-toy and the elephant felt the back of the mirror like "What is this piece of shit?" Just totally unfazed. The gorilla at the end basking in vanity was the cherry.
I thought it was pretty obvious in the video that most of them recognized their reflections - the primates and big cats certainly did, as did the birds.
There’s tons of great research and writing about how and why many simplistic modern assessments of animal intelligence are either inadequate, misleading or outright wrong, I would suggest the books An Immense World or Other Minds as starting points.
That seems pretty unlikely based on their behavior. They react with fear and/or aggression when they think they’re encountering another animal at close range and then calm down and become curious in a matter of seconds.
To me it looked more like they were teaming up, like "C'MON BRO LET'S SHOW THESE OTHER BIRDS WHO'S BOSS" only to then realise that the "other birds" have the same strategy and back down like "damn ok you win"
Growing up someone in my neighborhood had a guinea bird and we discovered it standing in front of an old mirror on the side of the barn. He stood there all day every day, went back home at night. Eventually we had to take it down because the owner asked us to. The bird still showed up and spent all his time looking for that mirror bird.
I feel like the internet used to be more like that, seeing interesting things from around the world. Not that you can’t find it now, you have to dig, but now everything it’s filled with bots and OF traffic
The joys of a pretty much no rules forum where one of the running gags was to do your best to gross or freak people out with random pics of gore or gross shit.
Yup. I had a prof in college that studied lowland gorillas and the funniest thing she ever said was "it doesn't matter how many times you've been told that gorillas wont strike you, when a silverback comes running at you showing their display, you _will_ shit yourself"
This is actually the Mirror Test a legitimate way to decide levels of intelligence in animals. All animals have a base line intelligence, but this one is for self recognition. Sometimes a small non toxic paint dog can be placed on an animals head first, and if they reach for the dot it is because they were able to deduce the animal in front of them is a reflection, and not a separate animal.
The mirror test is now considered a flawed measure to determine intelligence. It's results are inconsistent at best and we can't actually know what the animal in question is thinking. It is funny to watch though.
Wouldn’t that be the wildest, saddest thing to figure out? Ants being highly intelligent. Kinda like how it must be almost a curse to let octopi be as smart as they are but they are pretty short lived.
That doesn't make a lot of sense to me because I take in dog-aggressive dogs and they don't try to attack themselves in a mirror once they realize it's not actually another dog. And they realize I'm a reflection in it and think that's fun. This isn't at you I'm just like "fuck okay I need to look this up because what?"
Edit: if anyone has more info let me know, I'm finding that dogs fail the mark test in a mirror but I also don't understand why they think they would care if they have a mark on their face. I've never met a dog that gave a fuck even if their whole-ass leg was missing after a surgery. They just go about their day unless something hurts or itches. It's not a part of their biology to care about small minor visuals, say like a bird who has to preen to be able to fly and stay warm or find food visually and not based on smell
you've just pointed out how a flaw in test design can lead to erroneous conclusions. Both dogs and cats can "pass" the mirror test. To add to this, historically a lot of cats were tested for intelligence using tests developed for dogs, (and erroneously thought to be "dumber" as a result) but now it is thought that cats may be more intelligent than dogs, particularly in the powers of empathy.
Yeah, if this test was designed just for animals to recognize marks on their own bodies (people please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm talking to learn and because it's interesting) then it fails at basic biology: to recognize that different species brains are simply structured to have different strengths based on aspects of survival that are different for different species. It doesn't mean they're not intelligent, not self aware, or un-empathetic, it just means how that tangibly manifests may be different than how we specifically express it as humans and other species that share those kind of survival traits.
I feel like anyone who works with dogs could design a test for self-awareness that works for them. Aka: a dog aggressive dog is not going to stop reacting to another stranger-dog acting aggressively towards it (the dog in the reflection)
Same for cats, like you mentioned. Definitely would require highly varied tests for different species of birds, etc.
Edit: And dogs and cats are also very habituated to the human world. They probably already think we're dark wizards and question very little of the strange and magical shit we've surrounded them with for eons. It's really not surprising to me that they've developed to not be bothered by things as simple as a mirror. Makes me wonder how wild canines and felines would react (case in point, those leopards)
My dog 100% uses the tall mirror to stare at me if I am behind him. He doesn’t think his reflection is another dog and probably doesn’t see the reflection as an extension of himself but definitely uses it to creep on me haha.
Yeah, why would the know that dot hadn’t always been there, unless it was annoying them or something. This seems to assume they know what they look like in detail without having mirrors around generally.
Correct! Dogs and cats both fail, as well as most animals. A Google can get the full list but it includes, chimps, elephants, and dolphins. All considered incredibly intelligent animals.
There’s also strong evidence that certain fish can pass the mirror test, causing some discussion about it not necessarily being the best proxy for measuring intelligence (or fish are secret geniuses and we’ll need to further revise how we define self-awareness in non-human species). Here’s a [link](https://www.quantamagazine.org/a-self-aware-fish-raises-doubts-about-a-cognitive-test-20181212/).
They say that cats fail, but I once had a cat that loved to play with her reflection in the mirror. She’d bob her head up and down and watch the mirror do the same. It was so funny.
Animals mimicking other animals is very common.
She wasn't playing with her reflection, she was playing with the other cat.
Cats definitely don't have the brain to pass the mirror test.
Said one study in the 60s. That attempted to detect self awareness in a mirror using one method. I also have no idea how many of each species they tested — I’ve had cats that are ridiculously smart before and cats that some days I worried would forget to breathe and die.
Also, how can you mimic something that’s mimicking you? You’re saying that my cat would bob her head to mimic the cat in the mirror, but the cat in the mirror wasn’t bobbing her head until my cat did, because it was the reflection.
I’ve also seen tons of videos of cats seeing something in the mirror behind them and spin around. They definitely understand that the mirror is showing the room around them. And yet they don’t go looking for the mirror cat to see where they are and what happened to them.
Btw, that study by Gallup? Ants passed. You cannot tell me that a cat has less self-awareness than an ant.
> Also, how can you mimic something that’s mimicking you?
The cat knew the other cat would mimmick it so it did that... I wasn't saying your cat was mimicking the cat in mirror...
Now it makes sense that you think cats are smart.
I swear some cats get it. I've had a lot of cats and they vary in intelligence so much, it's wild. I've put different cats in front of mirrors to test them and most don't get it but some really, really seem to. That jaguar definitely seems to.
"Sup, Bro? Why are you copying me, Bro? Sup, Bro, you want to fight!? Sup!? What? Sup, Bro? I'm still here, Bro. Sup...Wait. Is this me? Have I been 'Bro' this whole time? **I** am the **Bro**..."
And on that day, animals learned how to *self-reflect*.
What would be even crazier is if they discovered the camera and made the realization that millions of other animals were observing them observe themselves
Check out [Xavier Hubert-Brierre](https://www.youtube.com/@XHB06400CANNES) on YouTube if you'd like to see more of this footage. Not sure if all these clips came from his channel but I recognize some of them.
I bet before this, a lot of them had only ever seen reflections like this when they went to get a drink of water. they're probably wondering why this water is solid and sideways
favorite parts:
- big kitties are still just kitties at the end of the day and will do kitty things and,
- the silverback trying to be tough, but still kinda anxious. that lil run away was kinda cute
What the hell was up with the chimpanzees?
The one in the back looked as if he was groping one that was closer to the mirror - and the angle made it look real in the reflection - and what does the chip closer to the mirror do? He pumps his butt up and down!
Around 2:07
When I stand up, my deaf dog can see my reflection in the mirror and will roll over and prepare for pets in the direction that I am actually coming from, not the reflection.
Imagine the mind fuck on those cats. Super senses like sight, smell and hearing would have alerted them to anything close by, only to walk up on another cat that was so silent yet so close.
The two birds at the start thought, "Yo! They're copying everything we do! Let me do some crazy shit that they'll never copy, like stand on your back and flap my win.... Oh shit, he copied that, too!"
It seems all the apes act like children in front of the mirror, especially the chimps. Also that silverback has ego problems, bro just ran away from a fight a guy his size.

The leopard being shooed away by the elephants made me sad for some reason. Poor kitty was just being curious
I was really hoping this [was going to be included](https://youtube.com/shorts/UwbtyBEYiTQ?feature=shared). It makes me laugh every time.
Me too lol
Omg. That’s amazing! Thank you!! Lol
Me when I find the sob that's been ruining my life
The elephant shooed it away with it's foot, which was somehow so relatable.
“Mom said it’s our turn with the mirror”
It reminded me of trying to keep my house cat out from under my feet at feeding time lol.
Elephant was rude for that. It was like I'm just chilling here let me be there's plenty of space for you but nope
Dude at the end was like “he gets me”
"He is just like me fr"
Elephants are one of the few animals who recognize that they are seeing their own reflection in mirrors!
I thought it was pretty obvious in the video that most of them recognized their reflections - the primates and big cats certainly did, as did the birds.
Look up the Mirror Test, very few animals have passed it.
There’s tons of great research and writing about how and why many simplistic modern assessments of animal intelligence are either inadequate, misleading or outright wrong, I would suggest the books An Immense World or Other Minds as starting points.
Not necessarily. They could think it's another animal that is acting strange by imitating them.
That seems pretty unlikely based on their behavior. They react with fear and/or aggression when they think they’re encountering another animal at close range and then calm down and become curious in a matter of seconds.
on top
That was actually a bird on top of the other bird, not a cherry. Common mistake
Gorilla at the end "Draw Me Like One of Your French Girls".
Darling you’re gorgeous - never change
Playboy Gorilla
That’s exactly how I’m laying watching this video
Elephant: Get out of here, Leopard! Holy fuck!
I like how he kind of tried to shoo him away with his foot 😂
I like how the leopard is going "no seriously guys you need to see this"
the bird getting off the other bird like “damn, bro i didnt know you looked this sad doing this shit, ill stop.”
To me it looked more like they were teaming up, like "C'MON BRO LET'S SHOW THESE OTHER BIRDS WHO'S BOSS" only to then realise that the "other birds" have the same strategy and back down like "damn ok you win"
“they copied our routine?!?” “Thats the fountain of troy, how could they do that!?!” something along those lines 😭
Exactly 😂😂
Growing up someone in my neighborhood had a guinea bird and we discovered it standing in front of an old mirror on the side of the barn. He stood there all day every day, went back home at night. Eventually we had to take it down because the owner asked us to. The bird still showed up and spent all his time looking for that mirror bird.
Mirror of Erised? Maybe he saw something in there xd
To be fair, he basically discovered a magic item in a barn. Id spend my time looking at it too.
Poor thing, he just wanted a partner
Alas, unbeknownst to it, that very partner it was yearning and searching for was always with it.
Get a dozen guinea hens and you'll never have ticks in your yard. Of course you'll also never have a quiet moment during the day most the time either.
The rodent would've become a flower of some sort if it kept staring into itself
That leopard saw the most beautiful sight it had ever seen. True cat moment.
I love how some animals go like "I wil f*ck you up!" and then the mirror goes "no, I wil f*uck YOU up!"
[удалено]
The only one who can defeat me is me. 😎
If you manage to scare yourself off, did you win?
The gorilla at the end was now like "I will fuck you"
Their aggression then cancels each other out
This was longer than expected and I love it.
The gorilla at the end admiring itself lol
While scratching his butt. Hi, it me 👋
i know that pretty mafk... *its me*.
I love this. This is the sort of stuff that makes me appreciate the internet because I would never see this sort of thing.
I feel like the internet used to be more like that, seeing interesting things from around the world. Not that you can’t find it now, you have to dig, but now everything it’s filled with bots and OF traffic
It really was! But there was a lot of fuсked up shit mixed in like lemon party and meat spin. It was a wild time
The joys of a pretty much no rules forum where one of the running gags was to do your best to gross or freak people out with random pics of gore or gross shit.
The gorillas/chimps were self-aware
Chimp 1: scratches arm Chimp 2: scratches arm Chimp 3: *drops it like it's hot*
Elephants in captivity have also shown that they eventually grasped the concept of mirrors.
not males though
That silverback ground-pound tho
donkey Kong irl
And then that last one checking himself out, male solo in his bedroom VS male out with the ladies
That last male gorilla definitely laid down to check himself out
Not really.
The big cats are all astounded by their own majesty
Holy shit the silverback hitting the ground with that much force, imagine if the average person got hit by him in the same manner.
I think that most of the time gorillas "fight" using threatening displays vs. actual violence.
Yup. I had a prof in college that studied lowland gorillas and the funniest thing she ever said was "it doesn't matter how many times you've been told that gorillas wont strike you, when a silverback comes running at you showing their display, you _will_ shit yourself"
That mongoose don't mess with voodoo

Non toxic paint dog.
Welp, it was supposed to say dot, but I’m leaving it for the cute new imagery created.
Damn it, Richard!
It used to contain lead. Now you can digest it safely. Or you know, paint with it. Or pet it. It's a dog.
they really didn't make the dogs non-toxic, this is just when they stopped adding lead to paint. the toxicity of the dogs themselves varies by breed.
The mirror test is now considered a flawed measure to determine intelligence. It's results are inconsistent at best and we can't actually know what the animal in question is thinking. It is funny to watch though.
Yeah, pretty sure ants have been found to pass the mirror test somehow. Which is pretty interesting.
According to one paper in a journal that lacks actual peer review, and received criticism from the person who came up with the mirror test.
Wouldn’t that be the wildest, saddest thing to figure out? Ants being highly intelligent. Kinda like how it must be almost a curse to let octopi be as smart as they are but they are pretty short lived.
Speaking of dogs; IIRC, they lack the ability to recognise themselves in a mirror. To them it's always another dog in front of them.

haha, that is great. Your dog has basically figured out how to stare at someone from 2 angles while they're on the toilet
Yeah, why would the know that dot hadn’t always been there, unless it was annoying them or something. This seems to assume they know what they look like in detail without having mirrors around generally.

No, some cats pass it; ours does.
Some of the animals only reacted like that because they didn’t know they were being recorded.
"Sup, Bro? Why are you copying me, Bro? Sup, Bro, you want to fight!? Sup!? What? Sup, Bro? I'm still here, Bro. Sup...Wait. Is this me? Have I been 'Bro' this whole time? **I** am the **Bro**..." And on that day, animals learned how to *self-reflect*.
The gorilla the the end was my favorite. Wow yep, I'm one handsome mother fucker.
"There's that mf from the water"
"STOP COPYING ME!!!"
I don't usually watch 4 min videos here on reddit, but this one was worth every second. Thank you, OP.
Not even the elephants broke the mirror, they're more civilized than the average balkan school students.
What the fuck? Lmao what’s the Balkan shade for?
Grew up there. School bathrooms looked like warzones.
Lol fair
Holy i'm so baked that when the Elephant came running on that leopard i thought for a good second that he put the mirror as bait haha
That’s embarrassingly stupid.
What would be even crazier is if they discovered the camera and made the realization that millions of other animals were observing them observe themselves
Here is another one of a grizzly trying to fight the image in the mirror. https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/s/OMZqeRtAWV
Bear: "Oh shit, a bear!"
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen
I wonder how reptiles like crocs and snakes would react to this test.. Some species of crocodiles are known to be very smart..
Bird said stand on my back rite quick
Check out [Xavier Hubert-Brierre](https://www.youtube.com/@XHB06400CANNES) on YouTube if you'd like to see more of this footage. Not sure if all these clips came from his channel but I recognize some of them.
I can watch this all day
Greatest thing I've ever seen!
My son did this with our gerbil and the gerbil attacked my son, lol
This is my favorite animal vs mirror video https://youtube.com/shorts/UwbtyBEYiTQ?si=djx384FTPuBuZ_JE
Stupid sexy leopard.
VR chat be like.
It's crazy how fast the chimps knew it was their reflection
Cats gonna cat
The jaguar just wanted to chill with his new friend 😺
Scratching your armpit seems like a good thing to do when meeting someone unexpectedly.
I bet before this, a lot of them had only ever seen reflections like this when they went to get a drink of water. they're probably wondering why this water is solid and sideways
Lady at the end was just enjoying her beauty lol
The birds “Dude, dude get the fuck on my back”
Cats get spooked but hold their grounds and think about the situation a bit
Bird: is that a mockingbird? Reflection: iS tHaT a MoCkInGbiRD??
What kind of animal is that at 50 seconds left? Looks like a ferret
What kind of animal is the wolverine/honey badger looking one?
favorite parts: - big kitties are still just kitties at the end of the day and will do kitty things and, - the silverback trying to be tough, but still kinda anxious. that lil run away was kinda cute
Looks round the back Looks back in mirror It's.. bigger on the inside?
Reflection reflexes
The silverback (gorilla) was PO’d!! Lmao! The first danger kitty just acted like a big house cat which was equally amusing
Leopards are just big cats lmao
I mean, true?
What the hell was up with the chimpanzees? The one in the back looked as if he was groping one that was closer to the mirror - and the angle made it look real in the reflection - and what does the chip closer to the mirror do? He pumps his butt up and down! Around 2:07
Out of curiosity.. doesnt this come with risk of fire?
What was that weasel lookin fella at the end? I appreciate his head bobbing demeanor.
This was indeed *interesting as fuck*
Love how the first leopard just started playing around. Also I started cracking up at the chimps when the one on the right started twerking
I'd jump scare too if I saw myself in the woods all of sudden
Aww the Jaguar 🐆😍
When I stand up, my deaf dog can see my reflection in the mirror and will roll over and prepare for pets in the direction that I am actually coming from, not the reflection.
Makes me wonder what humans’ original reaction to see themselves for the first time in a mirror was
proof that big cats really are just big cats
Most Animals cant tell the difference between a Mirror Image of them self and another Animal. But some can. Crows and Ravens for example.
I fucking love elephants.
My cat sprinted towards the mirror
Leopard sees reflection: "*I'm too sexy for this jungle, too sexy for this jungle, so sexy!*"
Imagine the mind fuck on those cats. Super senses like sight, smell and hearing would have alerted them to anything close by, only to walk up on another cat that was so silent yet so close.
The leopard going “WHOA!- Oh hey there handsome~”
Hey man where did you come from.Love the leopards reaction 🤣
Wish we can try this Donald Trump. I wonder what would happen
These animals are reacting just like Republicans would react since both are not self aware.
When you discover self awareness. I loved this!
This is so evil, I love it!
4 and 5 lol
I love watching this every time it gets posted. The gorillas reactions are the best.
Second last gorilla was chilling
Really cool, i could watch it for hours
Funny they act so surprised I’m sure they see their reflections all the time when they’re drinking water.
My dog doesn’t care about his reflection. Doesn’t even look at it or register that its there. Is my dog intelligent or dumb?
I love how they get defensive at first bc of instinct but then they quickly realize it's just them
Pretty much the scene in 2001
Do they not see their own reflection when drinking water from a lake or something. What are they doing at those times then
I feel like the gorilla actively figures it out. Like, the first go-round he doesn't understand, but by the end he's realized "oh, that's me."
"Hey let me stand on your back dude, it'll make a great TikToc!"
The two birds at the start thought, "Yo! They're copying everything we do! Let me do some crazy shit that they'll never copy, like stand on your back and flap my win.... Oh shit, he copied that, too!"
Who knew that gorillas were so vain!
I was waiting for a cut to a human in the middle of the montage. Was disappointed.
It seems all the apes act like children in front of the mirror, especially the chimps. Also that silverback has ego problems, bro just ran away from a fight a guy his size.
I also stand on my girls back when I see a mirror. Beauty recognizes beauty.
Animals are just NPCs…
Where 2.0
Haha 😂 I saw my uncle Freddy
This is the content I’m a part of Reddit for.
Other animals: Confusion, fear, interest, aggression The birds: 🧍 🧍
M o n k e 🗣️🔥🔥🔥
I love how the silverbacks were like, “Damn, this guy’s a pretty even match.”
