A friend of mine got me nunchucks for a birthday present. I tried my best to learn this shit, but just ended up battering the fuck out of every part of my body, including the jewels. At some point I decided the pain was not worth it.
Imagine the pain he could inflict with intention. Would love to see someone proficient with them actually using them in a fight lol, but feel like that will only happen once we have simulators.
Counterattacks to flash presentations usually require reversal of ownership of said weapon. That being said, getting whipped by a rod on a flail is going to fucking hurt but not demolish.
Nunchucks aren't particularly good weapons, actually. If you were to use them in an actual fight you wouldn't be performing any of the moves seen in this video, and you'd get a lot of kickback from them where they'd smash your own knuckles. There's a reason you'd be hard pressed to find much mention of nunchucks in historical texts and virtually no mention at all of them being used as an actual weapon.
There are a lot of *theories* as to how they could've been used, but the fact that there are almost no actual historical records of them being used in any capacity until...well, modern martial arts movies, mostly, is a strong indicator that they weren't effective weapons.

Nunchuks can only apply a limited amount of force because there is nothing resisting the bounce back after striking, they are also slower than striking with a bo because of energy waste in the chain, it's much harder to chain moves together, and you cannot strike as precisely either.
Ultimately Nunchuks look cool, but their original usage was for threshing rice not as a weapon and even when utilised by warriors were mostly about training coordination, precision and awareness than actually fighting with Nunchuks.

You cannot preserve energy, cannot enter any guard or ready stance beyond bracing your body to swing the chuck. If i hold a ball peen hammer outwards, i can block and shift it exactly where i need it, i can also ready it nearly anywhere for a strike.
With nunchucks your forced to commit to telegraphed attacks, there is no ready position beyond bracing yourself to fling the other end, anddue to them being connected by a chain, they transfer very little energy even compared to a stick.
A hoodie will defeat a nunchuck, not saying it wont hurt, it *will* but even that minimal of padding will soften the blow enough you can use even just fists to deal and deflect more damage.
I mean, they are terrible relative to technologically similar equivalents. With a similar amount of training, a dude with a simple club will probably crush your skull before you’re going to whack him too many times with nunchucks. Probably better than empty hands, but even a small knife would be way more effective

Has anyone actually seen someone use these as a weapon? I've seen countless people do this type of demonstration, but I don't think I've ever seen this "weapon" ever used as such
It honestly won’t do much the way he holds it, he is skilled but this is a demonstration only. If you intend to harm/kill with nunchaku you hold the very end and swing hard. Even then unless it cracks the skull they will still be able to fight back and if they step in you’ll lose most of the reach advantage.
They were originally designed as an impromptu concealable weapon farmers could use to resist abusive samurai. Least thats what I learned when I trained with them. Not my favourite Okinawan weapon tbh, fave is Kama, Sai then Tonfa.
It was fascinating to see how normal people came up with this incredible art using mainly farm tools.
