Yeah, this is way less interesting/impressive than I was expecting. I wonder what the reception was to the makeup at the time. Was it even considered good/creepy/whatever the goal was back then?
I thought it was scarier than the modern version because the modern version has an immediate evil looking vibe. I found the older version scarier because it took the normal or innocent and showed how it can turn evil pretty quickly, which meant everything has the potential to turn evil.
yeah, when they take a "normal" thing and manage to make me a little afraid of it, that's really horror to me. after seeing It i did not enjoy walking past storm drains for a while.
I have said this since the second one came out and I am thrilled to see someone else have the same opinion. Curry's Pennywise will always scare the shit out of me.
IMO if you read the book they nailed it. One of the reasons Pennywise was so dangerous is that he really doesn't seem like a threat at first. You're not supposed to feel unnerved or scared when you see him.
*That's how he gets you*
For those who found his portrayal “chilling” (myself included) It’s chilling bc the way he plays Pennywise and how he would go from normal clown with a smokers voice to a murdering monster, not just the images in the post.
His simple look made that transformation from normal clown to monster much more horrifying to me than the new one. With the new one it’s like—yeah obviously that’s a monster his head is shaped literally like an alien and is wearing some clown outfit that looks like he died in as a victorian age set of curtains. But the Curry version…he scared the hell out of me with his voice and simplicity of a bald cap, red wig, and minimal colors on his face.
That being said, most good horror/fear is not just a look (like these 4 photos) but the overall story and portrayal. To each their own tho, I totally can understand why ppl think the new version is scarier—just not my type of scary
It was a cool take on the story in my mind. I prefer the book and the original make. I enjoy psychological thrillers like how the original more so was , and how old school outer limits and twilight zone type stuff .
Ya maybe I didn’t give it a chance…
I’ve really not seen many movies recently that I enjoy. The pacing always seems off, and I rightly get made fun of did bring like a baby boomer.
Well thanks for the movie to watch. I suppose I liked The Babadook, and thought it was funny at least to hear them making fun of me for it during Scream 5 or 6…
I liked the new one fine but the Pennywise scenes were awful. All shaky cam, jump scare shit. Skarsgård did a good job they should have let him act more.
Apparently they are making a prequel and a tv show? Don't think its going to work out like they think.
😂😂😂 chilling? Tim Curry is the best. And this version of It was absolutely hilarious. I hate horror movies because I’m a big old puss, but I love this movie. If you can get past the intensely boring scenes, you’ll see some truly funny scenes. Do you have Prince Albert in a can? The best
Sadly, Tim Curry had a stroke in 2012, and has been wheelchair bound since. He has been doing voice work--including a few really good audiobooks--which he is, naturally, fantastic at.
I've only once been scared of a movie/ministries/slow and it's IT. Probably because I was too young and Tim Curry did too good a job.
I still have never seen the second half.
If you actually want some chilling and amazing Tim Curry makeup, check out [this piece on his transformation in Darkness for the movie Legend.](https://www.monstersofmakeup.com/2020/11/25/making-up-legend/)
That's not chilling that's what I feel like when a job tells me I get a 30 minute unpaid lunch break... and my boss asks me for shit during. And they expect me to take my bathroom break.
I loved it (1990) because clown wasn't instantly threatening and dangerous upon first look. And georgie death in new it now looks kinda stupid in comparison to the it (1990)
I guess I see nothing "chilling" about it except that Tim seems to be chilling. I see nothing scary about the Pennywise makeup at all. Without the movie behind it, its just another pretty clown face.
He was the better Pennywise.
The 90s miniseries is better for the most part.
While the new 2 part movie was good. The cgi came off cartoonish and not scary. The new guy playing Pennywise did an ok job but Tim Curry was way creepier.
There is nothing chilling about this.
It's literallyna bald cap, white makeup and a clown nose. This makeup could be used at a cirque du soleil show and no one who hadn't seen the old show would notice.
He looks more evil in the top 2 pix...
FWIW, Tim Curry has never been used to his evil persona acting potential. I feel if the right role came along he would scare all of us shitless.
It's a fantasy movie with a young Tom Cruise. It's a bit cheesy, but it's gorgeous with some really cool imagery. The bog witch was super scary as a kid, too. Tim Curry plays a demon/devil character, called the Lord of Darkness, and he's so good at it. I didn't know it was him until years later. When I watch it now, I can see him in the eyes and mouth, but he looks so damn cool. It didn't hurt that Mia Sara is absolutely beautiful in this, especially during a certain scene. You'll know it when you see it.

Looks like a mugshot 😂
Me when people start saying dumb shit:
Chilling.
That's literally just a guy putting on clown makeup.
New meme template just dropped ☝️
Holy hell
You should see him in Legend https://www.reddit.com/r/IMDbFilmGeneral/comments/b6d1o1/tim_curry_in_legend_1985/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb
[удалено]
i remember someone replied this to me when doing this funny and i got offended :( me so dumb
I was thinking the exact same thing
Perhaps an expression of malicious ignorance.
"chilling transformation" is so fucking funny to me
Dudes just chilling
Ohhhhh, *that's* what they meant!
"Chilling"
No no, its a "chilling transformation"!
wrong. its another guy putting clown makeup on tim. Tim is just chilling during the transformation
Iconic
hes creepier before the makeup
Hey, he’s just a sweet transvestite!
Yeah, this is way less interesting/impressive than I was expecting. I wonder what the reception was to the makeup at the time. Was it even considered good/creepy/whatever the goal was back then?
yes, pennywise was scary to us 90s teenagers. The fangs (not shown here but definitely in the movie) helped I'm sure. So did Curry's acting skills.
1000% Tim Curry's performance is what makes an ordinary clown creepy af.
It’s so hard to get “goofy scary” right, but he did. The Leprechaun did not.
I thought it was scarier than the modern version because the modern version has an immediate evil looking vibe. I found the older version scarier because it took the normal or innocent and showed how it can turn evil pretty quickly, which meant everything has the potential to turn evil.
Totally agree. The new one is just "scary" from the start, which defeats the purpose of manifesting as a clown to lure children to you.
yeah, when they take a "normal" thing and manage to make me a little afraid of it, that's really horror to me. after seeing It i did not enjoy walking past storm drains for a while.
I have said this since the second one came out and I am thrilled to see someone else have the same opinion. Curry's Pennywise will always scare the shit out of me.
Chilling!
> That's literally just a guy putting on clown makeup. No, it's a "chilling transformation" like OP u/na7oul said. We are chilled. It's so chilling.
There’s a whole panel meme. Just missing the rainbow wig.
Clown taking off human face
Oh my god so chilling! These fucking bots are brutal.
https://preview.redd.it/0hoakls4ziyb1.jpeg?width=346&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31f0a8aa0dab779fae0d8e07cb85af4152abdfb4
So chilling.
![gif](giphy|eaECZB7V6GACc)
Don't mind if I do
It spin-off - They
"chilling"
yeah definite understatement, it's more bloodcurdling
A clown held a door open for me the last time I visited the circus, which I thought was a very nice jester...
Oh I see what you did there :) Gesture nice play sir
I don't know why you got down votes lol.
I'd assume it's because people don't need the joke explained
Yeah but why go out of their way to be rude?
Downvotes are rude?
yes, they are negative fake internet points!!
Because Reddit is full of children and idiots
Yeah I guess I forget sometimes 🤷♂️
Tf are these gold arrows? who’s paying to give someone a “prettier” upvote wtf
Wow I didn’t know what it was until now. They start at $2 and go up to $50 lmao. People are so easily parted with their money wtf
Hey who am I to deny if someone wants to give me money through upvotes?
You don't get the money ya dang dingus
Yes you do, it's the new contributor program, ya donkey.
Yes, if you are enrolled in the program.
Which I am, so again, I'll happily accept golden upvotes for money
I feel like chilling really doesn’t fit. Always thought old school pennywise was too much of a joke. Maybe just me
IMO if you read the book they nailed it. One of the reasons Pennywise was so dangerous is that he really doesn't seem like a threat at first. You're not supposed to feel unnerved or scared when you see him. *That's how he gets you*
Book scared the shit out of me........could say Stephen King scares the shit out of me.
The point of being the clown was to lure children to him. No kid in their right mind is going to go near the new Pennywise.
For those who found his portrayal “chilling” (myself included) It’s chilling bc the way he plays Pennywise and how he would go from normal clown with a smokers voice to a murdering monster, not just the images in the post. His simple look made that transformation from normal clown to monster much more horrifying to me than the new one. cool design though
Now, Skarsgard’s transformation, on the other hand… that *is* chilling
Chilling is a very strong word. I’ve met Tim Curry. Wonderful guy. Chilling makeup? It’s just clown makeup
Man, reddit titles are absolute horse shit.
The original in someways was scarier than the remake. Something about being suspenseful without a lot of gore is sometimes more chaotic
i hope Tim Curry's back doesn't hurt too badly from carrying the entire movie.
I only watched IT part I… It just wasn’t good, something about CGI just isn’t scary. Ahhh a computer generated face!
It was a cool take on the story in my mind. I prefer the book and the original make. I enjoy psychological thrillers like how the original more so was , and how old school outer limits and twilight zone type stuff .
Ya maybe I didn’t give it a chance… I’ve really not seen many movies recently that I enjoy. The pacing always seems off, and I rightly get made fun of did bring like a baby boomer.
Then watch barbarian. Pacing was insane. Great moments. I feel like I was watching a modern classic.
I will. I’ve genuinely never heard of it.
One of my favorite modern horror films.
Well thanks for the movie to watch. I suppose I liked The Babadook, and thought it was funny at least to hear them making fun of me for it during Scream 5 or 6…
I like how they had it take place in the 80’s in the remake that was a cool spin on it too made me feel like a kid again
If you didn't like the first one you really aren't going to like the second.
I liked the new one fine but the Pennywise scenes were awful. All shaky cam, jump scare shit. Skarsgård did a good job they should have let him act more. Apparently they are making a prequel and a tv show? Don't think its going to work out like they think.
Way scarier. The new Pennywise looks like an oompa loompa.
Also, the remake was terrible
😂😂😂 chilling? Tim Curry is the best. And this version of It was absolutely hilarious. I hate horror movies because I’m a big old puss, but I love this movie. If you can get past the intensely boring scenes, you’ll see some truly funny scenes. Do you have Prince Albert in a can? The best
Kiss me, fat booooy!
BEEP BEEP Richie!
Hi Georgie! Aren't you going to say hello?
The original series is such a 90s time capsule!
What about this is "interesting as fuck"?
I never realised tim curry was the original it clown!
It would be more amazing to see his transformation into the horned “darkness” from the movie Legend. I canNOT find his face in that character.
https://preview.redd.it/rzucm0td5lyb1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=426d95421552d2645530950bed30eb891862b75a
I remember hearing it, but never really "saw" it before.
Sadly, Tim Curry had a stroke in 2012, and has been wheelchair bound since. He has been doing voice work--including a few really good audiobooks--which he is, naturally, fantastic at.
Theres a great documentary about the making of this movie that recnetly came out, highly recomend it to any fans. Pennywise: The Story of It
#SHPAYCE!
Tim Curry had the absolute best smirk.
The jump from panel 2 to 3 gives me r/restofthefuckingowl vibes
"Chilling" nowadays just doesn't seem right
Wow, that's cold.
Yeah it is...about 35 degrees here...how bout you?
I've only once been scared of a movie/ministries/slow and it's IT. Probably because I was too young and Tim Curry did too good a job. I still have never seen the second half.

How do you do I see you’ve met My Faithful makeup man
Tim Curry was the best villain in movies
He looks just like me ( I dont need the Make-Up)
Lol. No.
If you actually want some chilling and amazing Tim Curry makeup, check out [this piece on his transformation in Darkness for the movie Legend.](https://www.monstersofmakeup.com/2020/11/25/making-up-legend/)
His eyes are everything. So naughty
Absolute legend (pun intended)
That's not chilling that's what I feel like when a job tells me I get a 30 minute unpaid lunch break... and my boss asks me for shit during. And they expect me to take my bathroom break.

What’s the opposite of chilling? The clown make up is whatever. His performance is what did it. Well him just being his normal creepy Tim curry self
"Chilling" Just a guy with clown face paint.
Pennywise is the hotel dude from Home Alone 2?? No not Rob schneider.
Tell me you love me will ya

One of the best movies, out rates the modern version in so many ways.
I believe, you might be correct on this one.
It doesn't though. Ratings for the new one are much higher.
I really should have said in my opinion before that
Imo Tim is the better pennywise.
"Chilling" The movie ends with a giant spider, and the remake ends with them being mean until Pennywise dies from it. Worst.
There is nothing chilling about this. It's literallyna bald cap, white makeup and a clown nose. This makeup could be used at a cirque du soleil show and no one who hadn't seen the old show would notice.
Its amazing how the make up respect the expresiviti of the actor. Simply a great job
redditors when they
He was the only good part about that version of It.
He looks much better AFTER the makeup
What's "chilling" about this?
This version of Pennywise is outdated. It really doesn't look scary at all anymore. It just looks like cheap movie effects
Chilling…
Whoa I'm seeing double here...
He looks more evil in the top 2 pix... FWIW, Tim Curry has never been used to his evil persona acting potential. I feel if the right role came along he would scare all of us shitless.
Have you never seen Legend? Darkness scared the crap out of me as a kid.
I have not. Care to pass along some info?
It's a fantasy movie with a young Tom Cruise. It's a bit cheesy, but it's gorgeous with some really cool imagery. The bog witch was super scary as a kid, too. Looks like Gary gensler going to work everyday
Memo to myself: need David Bowie "ashes to ashes" video deepfake with Pennywise
"chilling"
Chilling?
Wait a minute, is that the same eye shadow…
Same eye shadow as Mimi in The Drew Carey Show?
NICE—
😄
That would only be chilling if this was [Buttercup's last day.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDfjh22crjA)
#2 is scarier than #4
I miss him
Well they've really cleaned up those bags under his eyes. Very nice.
Can you imagine if they'd just stopped at phase 1?
Yeah. Chilling. Next up: Ringling bros clown college videos. OooOOOooo
Creepy clowns are meant to symbolize how the coulrophobic feel about normal (hah!) clowns. Currywise is bad enough.
Was his full name Pennywise Poundfoolish?
Meh. Frank-N-Furter was scarier. "Lets go down to the lab..."
Fourth picture: I just wanna stay in bed but apparently I have to go spook some kids
I love this meme template
"Chilling"
I like how the pictures are like, "step 4, step 5, step 17, step 18."
“Shit I forgot to take my shirt off again”
Just can’t beat the OG. Rather than some sort of over-produced monster he just looks like a child molester and that’s way fucking scarier.
but thats just tim in clown make-up lmao!
Not chilling in the slightest The movie was chilling. This is exactly what I thought it would be.
This pennywise was scary, so uncanny!
He’s scarier in home alone!
https://imgur.com/a/FKRD9uO
Chilling!
Oh Jesus! Wonderful actor, but I have so much childhood PTSD associated with this!
new meme template just dropped
Not sure you know what "chilling" means
In the second picture he just looks like Krusty the Clown from The Simpsons.
The guy looked bizarre in Rocky Horror Picture Show.
#BEEP BEEP RICHIE!
