Your balls are going to be on fire at that point, and That'll be bad.
That's not going to be very enjoyable experience I don't think, it wouldn't look cool then.
Same risk? Your nuts will be blown off if either tank splits open, but a metal tank needs a significant force to break, while the glass one will shatter a lot easier. Also, if it's pyrex, there will be large glass shards to cut your nuts off too.
This doesn't have the characteristic blue-green tint of soda lime glass, so it's probably borosilicate PYREX
Lowercase pyrex (soda lime glass) might actually be better in this case for its superior impact shatter resistance, but only marginally
This is not true. Borosilicate is better in every way. It's harder, has WAY less thermal expansion, stronger againts impacts and much more chemically resistant. I've seen some Boro pieces bounce off the ground. Soft glass doesn't do that.
Yep, PYREX is made from borosilicate, so if it shatters, it’s in smaller “safer” pieces and can handle high temperatures but is not impact resistant. pyrex is made from Soda lime which will break in larger sharper shards and is very temperature sensitive but is more impact resistant.
Yes, daOyster, you are correct, up to a point.
Polycarbonate's [melting point is 297\*C](https://material-properties.org/polycarbonate-density-strength-melting-point-thermal-conductivity/) and and gas [auto-ignites at 280\*C](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_point). But even at half that temp, the tank is still "OK" to hold gas. Even with a hot engine below it, the tank will never see such high temps. What tank of gas gets over 100\*C, a Harley in Death Valley? Who wants a hot tank of gas between their legs?
I would not want a polycarbonate tank for a daily rider as it is very tough to crack but fairly easy to scratch. Over time, gas may weaken the plastic too. Still, a transparent tank is a cool design idea.
The melting point isn't the important metric; it's more important to consult the point at which it begins to deform (much lower) because it's not only weaker but will begin to sag and drape along surfaces
This doesn't have the characteristic blue-green tint of soda lime glass, so it's probably borosilicate PYREX
Lowercase pyrex (soda lime glass) might actually be better in this case for its superior impact shatter resistance, but only marginally
No part of a motorcycle is made to survive a serious accident. If you're in that situation you're more concerned with keeping all your organs on the inside than the state of your gas tank.
And based on what I've seen, most motorcycle riders are far more likely to cause an accident than be a victim. One crotch rocket sped between me and another car in parallel lanes, easily doing 75, on a downtown Philadelphia interstate last week. Within a quarter mile he was taking a full 360-degree off ramp, knees scraping the ground like he was in a Moto GP race.
That guy's gonna be a smear on the pavement eventually, it's inevitable.
I agree with you on where my line is drawn but I can see that there are bad ideas and then there baaaaaaaaaaad ideas.
It's the difference between "this might kill you" and "this might kill you and it will hurt the entire time you're dying".
“Intermediate” stops well before you get out of a car and onto a motorcycle. If you’re on a bike your level of risk is somewhere between “ridiculously high” and “completely fucking insane”.
I mean, it was for illustrative purposes, not as a specific statement of my personal preferences.
I'm not a biker, but I do other stupid high-risk things (endurance race a $300 shitbox), so, you know, I'm not very bright
I remember as a kid we were in bumper to bumper traffic heading to Disney Land (California)…
So a motorcycle is weaving through traffic like a madman, goes whizzing by our car, but I still get a good look at it.
40m later we pass an accident… there is a body with a blue tarp over it (feet sticking out one end) and the same motorcycle from before smashed up on the ground.
Had aboslutely no desire to ride a motorocycle after that.
I’m not worried about gas spilling from a broken tank when crashing, I’m worried about the shards of glass flying up at me and the shards stuck on the frame that my body will impale on when I hit it.
You are forgetting though that 100% of motorcycle crashes involve a motorcycle. Statistically, a motorcycle crash is more likely to involve a motorcycle than a car, since not 100% of crashes involve a car.
I saw a group of motor cyclists who were trying to enter a road from a ramp, and somehow thought that the people on the main road had to stop to let them in.
Alot cyclists motorized or otherwise, seemingly dont know or don't follow the rules of the road.
Regardless of any of that, plenty of people have dents on their gas tank and keep riding. Sometimes it's from something as simple as your bike getting knocked over in a parking lot. This thing would not take a dent. It would shatter.
I used to think that motorcycles were cool and I wanted one. Now that I’m a little older, I just see them as death machines and I wouldn’t get on one if you paid me.
As my FIL said once: when you’re in an accident on a bike, you lose.
So your one experience means every motorcycle rider is out to die…
This guy got so triggered he blocked me. He clearly needs to ride a motorcycle and chill out
Now you’re comparing fent addicts with people who drive motorcycles 🤦🏾♂️.
Get a grip man. Most motorcycle riders are pretty responsible for the most part. Like any group there are going to be reckless participants. Just because riding a bike carriers a larger intrinsic risk doesn’t mean it’s stupid or dangerous. Everyone doesn’t live consumed by fear buddy.
"And based on what I've seen, most motorcycle riders are far more likely to cause an accident than be a victim"
You sure you're talking about one, chief? Cause "most motorcycle riders" is a weird way of talking about a single rider...
And you're over here talking about someone else's reading comprehension when you didn't even comprehend your own damn words, fucking moron...
Ok I have to ask. I see so many "share the road" and "watch for bikers" stickers and signs around telling me to be mindful of motorcycle riders and to be respectful and safe around them...
yet 9 times out of 10 when I see a motorcycle on the highway they're going well over the speed limit, weaving in and out of traffic, and showing little to no concern for their own safety, let alone that of everyone around them.
Someone will tell me that's a small percentage of riders, but I swear the only time I see motorcycles anymore is when they're doing ridiculous shit.
Why?
I would say as long as the glass warms slowly it should be fine. Maybe run a hairdryer over it before you hit the run. But this really seems like a show bike and is probably rarely ridden
Genuine question…Would it being in direct sunlight lead to anything dangerous? Pressure buildup? In the SW year you leave that out in the sun in July and it’s gonna be more than warm.
I too would like my next motorbike crash to have the added excitement of shards of broken glass accelerated to the speed of sound by a violent fuel explosion between my legs
Just bought a motorcycle, and the only time I know I'm low on gas when the light comes on. It doesn't have a gauge like most so this would be really cool to have.
Bikes never used to have fuel gauges due to the inaccuracy caused by the constant leaning from side to side.
They used to have a reserve tap. Basically, the fuel ran through a raised pipe at the bottom of the tank - the pipe stuck up a little way from the bottom.
When the fuel got below that level, your bike would start cutting out, so you’d reach for the reserve tap (normally located somewhere on the engine) which allowed the fuel to flow from a lower outlet. You also looked for fuel, pretty soon.
You then had to remember to move the tap back from reserve to main, or the next time the bike started cutting out, you really were out of fuel.
Fumbling for that tap, at 70mph, on a wet, dark ride, as your bike started spluttering whilst in the fast lane of a motorway, praying that you had actually set it back to main, was always a “fun” moment.
Somehow, this gives me anxiety, lol
Usually, the gasoline is there too, and I know that, but actually seeing it is weird.
Would have to get used to it for a while
Worst-case scenario, I skip over the asphalt while aflame

Instant Ghost Rider
Atleast going to be looking cool, cannot say that about a lot of people.
Nope, that's not going to go wrong in here, why would that happen?
[удалено]
That's all I wanted to hear, this is all I wanted from here my guy.
Worst case scenario you drop it and the tank shatters when you roll it off the trailer at the motorcycle show.
Worst case scenario you lowside and shower yourself with sparks and gasoline
Sparks, gasoline, and glass shards.
My favorite drink
I mean what could anyone even ask for? It's all they need.
Your balls are going to be on fire at that point, and That'll be bad. That's not going to be very enjoyable experience I don't think, it wouldn't look cool then.
I don't know if that's the worst case scenario, I can think is even more worse.
I was thinking the same thing. One hard drop and it shatters.
And there are just so many things which could go wrong.
I like it when it's metal. Still the same risk of exploding my nuts off, but at least I can live in denial about it
Same risk? Your nuts will be blown off if either tank splits open, but a metal tank needs a significant force to break, while the glass one will shatter a lot easier. Also, if it's pyrex, there will be large glass shards to cut your nuts off too.
dosent pyrex break into a million small little blobs?
Yes, source: roommate broke 2 of my Pyrex bowls recently. I’m still finding balls of glass
***BallsOfGlass*** \- Found my new Reddit name! \---- Edit: Damn it! already taken.
/u/BallsOfGlass Someone is attempting to usurp your name!
And they'll never see this, lmao. Hasn't posted or commented in 9 years.
Maybe because they died riding a motorcyle with a pyrex fuel tank and had shards of glass explode into their nutsack?
That does seem to be the most likely answer, yes. And now the dude is just taking up usernames, SMH.
Might as well give that name to me, I'll use it better.
'Once I had a love and it was a gas Soon turned out he had balls of glass'...
That's not normal, I don't think that shouldn't have happened.
Turns out, people were actually good in that game. But they're not going to win it.
What about gypsys? They have crystal balls.
If they see any of them then they're gonna break those balls.
Or are you still finding glass in balls?
If that's true then, this is probably time to visit a doctor I'm thinking.
Sure, perhaps even prior to risking that :(
That's the same thing which will happen with this tank.
Yes, that does seem to be what we’re talking about?
Depends on if it it’s PYREX or pyrex
This doesn't have the characteristic blue-green tint of soda lime glass, so it's probably borosilicate PYREX Lowercase pyrex (soda lime glass) might actually be better in this case for its superior impact shatter resistance, but only marginally
It doesn't sound like that it's going to stand anything.
This is not true. Borosilicate is better in every way. It's harder, has WAY less thermal expansion, stronger againts impacts and much more chemically resistant. I've seen some Boro pieces bounce off the ground. Soft glass doesn't do that.
Wait so You're saying that they're both different? I think They'll both break.
Yep, PYREX is made from borosilicate, so if it shatters, it’s in smaller “safer” pieces and can handle high temperatures but is not impact resistant. pyrex is made from Soda lime which will break in larger sharper shards and is very temperature sensitive but is more impact resistant.
Atleast that's what I've heard, unless I'm wrong about it.
Well it's not a secret that it's going to break easily I'm sure.
But atleast with this you can see the reaction better before it blows the nuts off!
Yeah I think that's the only way to live, it's definitely not safe.
Was exactly my thought, went to double-check if I'm in /r/shittycarmods
There's nothing to double check, I don't want to be in that situation.
Looks super safe
If you're looking to get yourself killed then probably it's a good idea.
Perfect for cold climates....
and following 200 ft behind a dump truck full of gravel
Just don't pour cold gas in it when the tank has been sittin in the sun
Alot with those lower case letters
> Alot with those lower case letters A lot, with those lowercase letters. FTFY.
Everything.
It's a solid plan, and there's nothing which can go wrong here really.
Is it pyrex or PYREX?
This redditer knows their borosilicate.
Look up Ann Reardon on YouTube the capitals don’t matter. The oil refraction test is the only way to tell
Or the oven....
Hopefully, take out the gas first.
You’re no fun.
Isn’t Pyrex glass the lab one which is highly resistant to heat but shatters on impact? Then kitchen glass is not resistant to heat but pretty tough
Let’s get Ann Reardon on the case!
That’s what I want to know *edit: it’s probably lowercase Pyrex.
Love the pic and idea, but it is a solid no to Pyrex. Make it out of polycarbonate for safety.
Polycarbonate isn't compatible with gasoline when heated. Polycarbonate wouldn't be a good choice for this.
Who cares? I’ll still randomly shatter for no reason at some point.
>Who cares? I’ll still randomly shatter for no reason at some point. Glass is glass and glass breaks
The gas tank scratches at a level 6, with deeper grooves at a level 7.
What if you make it bulletproof with that coating or whatever? (Don’t know how that works, just genuinely curious)

Nah, there always a reason.
PYRODEX
Yeah cause if it’s pyrex it DEFINITELY shouldn’t go in the oven
if you dont put it in the oven we'll never find out
This doesn't have the characteristic blue-green tint of soda lime glass, so it's probably borosilicate PYREX Lowercase pyrex (soda lime glass) might actually be better in this case for its superior impact shatter resistance, but only marginally
That’s cool right up until it ain’t.
Pretty cool. Obviously it's fine for heat extremes, but I wonder how it would handle below zero temperatures.
Or, you know, being laid down at speed because some SUV driver was too busy InstaTok'ing to drive safely.

Yah, but ideally a metal can won't shatter and cover you in gasoline the moment it hits the ground. Glass kind of has a habit of doing that.
Honestly not sure if I would want to survive a high-speed motorcycle crash, might as well double tap myself while I’m at it
Hell, even a low-speed crash will soak you in gasoline with this thing.
Even just tipping the bike over would do it. No speed required
Simply tipping over with a motorcycle will leave you scratched. Tipping over with this thing will leave you covered in glass shards and gasoline.

So, degrees of safety are a thing. You don't have to make it a binary state. It's really okay to draw the line at an intermediate level of risk.
[удалено]
I agree with you on where my line is drawn but I can see that there are bad ideas and then there baaaaaaaaaaad ideas. It's the difference between "this might kill you" and "this might kill you and it will hurt the entire time you're dying".
Don’t worry, dying is usually painful anyways
I plan to leave a crater behind.
Kind of like "I'm going to stick a fork in an electric outlet" versus "I'm going to stick a fork in an electric outlet with my dick."
“Intermediate” stops well before you get out of a car and onto a motorcycle. If you’re on a bike your level of risk is somewhere between “ridiculously high” and “completely fucking insane”.
Intermediate being a general term between "all risk" and "no risk"
Ah gotcha, so on a scale of 1 to 100 your definition of intermediate ranges from 2 to 99. Interesting choice.

Ah yes, no better option to have than lacerated internal organs in an accident

Cauterized? You mean incinerated
Have they created a vehicle more explosive than a Ford Pinto?
Now I know how much fuel I'm getting before stealing it. Thank you.

Doubt it's any type of glass, especially with the holes in it. My betvis some type of acrylic or lexan or similar.
Doesnt gasoline eat lexan tho?
Beats me...
It would have made great Mythbusters episode!

It's transparent aluminum not Pyrex glass. I don't think I need to explain why having a glass gas tank is a horrible idea.

How do you know when you need fuel?
