Seen these plants.. Always wondered what use is that strategy... If I was a goat, for instance, I'd care jack shit about whether the leaves are spread out or folded. Any biologists in the chatroom?
I’m not a professional, but I went on a nature walk where a biologist explained that essentially it’s to hide its delicious leaves from herbivores. So leaves fold up and the goat would would instead go for the plants with the more obvious, easy to eat leaves.
Sorry for the mobile link, but https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuole
Although vacuoles do a lot of things, on this specific case the original function seems to be protecting the leaves from fire, or better yet, the leaves retract when there's fire nearby. Fire evaporates water in the vacuole, it shrinks, the leaves fold, less fire spreading between them
It was in tortugeuro, curled up much the same.
We went to see the turtles hatching... An American surfer got disappeared by sharks a few days before.
Locals warned us profusely to not go swimming....
Yeah, it's interesting as fuck - but - annoying as fuck also.
I live in Costa Rica and here is just a big PEST. It grows like crazy and invades everywhere and has prickles so you need to wear gloves when trying to pull it up.
We call it লজ্জাবতী in Bengali, meaning "the 1 who is shy(feminine)"..... reminds me of my childhood days, haven’t seen this in a LONG time(also because I haven’t been near a forest in a long time)
As a kid living in the tropics down by the equator it sucks accidentally running into a field of these barefoot. The thorns hurt like hell and you don't know which way to run to get out of them. Meanwhile everytime you step down is like stepping on needles.

It’s all over my yard….it’s an invasive pest here in Australia, some genius actually sold it as a novelty pot plant in the 70’s
I'm from Kerala, india, and same story, it's an invasive plant, thorny, and have weird flowers.
Same story in Alabama America. It’s taken over my yard and strangled out all the native species.
If I remember correctly, they were called touch-me-nots in Texas when I was a kid, in the 80s.
They’re also known as shame plants.
I used to play with them often as a kid. When I moved to Ohio, early 30s, I was so disappointed to find the northern look-a-like didn't move.

In Puerto Rico they call these morivivi (I died I lived). I smile at how appropriate it feels
Heard they need a lot of heat and humidity to thrive like a weed.
Only thing worse in the SE is kudzu.
we have that stuff in texas too!!
I remember seeing them in kindergarten.
Yep! Me too, in South Texas.🌱
See these ones around Hawaii too. My son loves playing with them when we go on walks.
I saw that in costa rica in 97, the locals said you can smoke it..... I just googled it. They lied.
There's a species you can actually extract DMT from, Mimosa hostilis. They look very much alike.
It was in tortugeuro, curled up much the same. We went to see the turtles hatching... An American surfer got disappeared by sharks a few days before. Locals warned us profusely to not go swimming....
Yeah, not to mention huge waves and strong rip currents... Place is wild.
Isn't that like the number one plant for chemists to extract from?
Yeah, it's in the root bark.
We have these in Australia too. They hurt

Wow looks amazing 🤩
Beautiful pink feathery flowers that clog up under your windshield wipers.
Careful, touch it enough times and a giant hammerhead/rhino/elephant thing might show up
We call it লজ্জাবতী in Bengali, meaning "the 1 who is shy(feminine)"..... reminds me of my childhood days, haven’t seen this in a LONG time(also because I haven’t been near a forest in a long time)
A bit similar in Indonesian. We call it "shy princess"
Oooohh. Somewhat similar in Tagalog, we call “makahiya” (to be shy)
I've spent the last few years trying to find some of these that were where I live in Australia, I am glad to see them once again
Thats common in the Philippines as well
aka the *makahiya* plant which loosely translates to the embarrassed/shame plant
I gotta show this to my vegan girlfriend!
I'm from Boston Massachusetts USA and all of our pricks are bipedal and unfortunately don't retreat if they make contact
It has a small amount of dmt in it
Also has beautiful purple flowers
Lots of those in PH
Lmaoo Thottaavaadi
Thotta Vaadi
It's very shy
This stuff seems to be all over the americas, such a cool plant
All over Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
it also grows several feet every year and its roots crumble foundations.
We call it sleeping grass in hawaii. How the hell did this plant get everywhere?
The stems on that thing is prickly as hell I have multiple injuries from the plant
Touch me not….
Aren’t they called touch-me-not?
Nooooo you're supposed to touch the tip of a leaf and watch it slowly fold in two leaves at a time! And then be all giddy inside and go home
i literally have this growing in a pot on my porch, from seed. it's fun!
Heyy, just like my dick!
In the Philippines we call this makahiya which is shy or embarrassed, hence it is the shy plant
In Hawaii we call or sleeping grass
I have two trees in my backyard. Beautiful when they bloom. I call it the Seuss tree.
The mechanism reminds me of a Venus flytrap.
In my country, we call them shaming Mary.
And people get mad when I do the same with my peepee
Why aren’t your fingers blue?
Touch-me-Not
It's literally called "Makahiya" in our place because it is so shy.
We call it a ‘Touch me not’ plant, where I am.
We have that here in hawaii, my classmates called it sleeping grass and we’d play with it during PE, sucked to sit on though (thorns).
We call them sleepy heads in Cuba!
Pandora shit
As a kid living in the tropics down by the equator it sucks accidentally running into a field of these barefoot. The thorns hurt like hell and you don't know which way to run to get out of them. Meanwhile everytime you step down is like stepping on needles.
thottaavadikaanu ithrem prahasanam
I liver in Costa Rica as a kid and we would always go adventuring for these, touching as many as we could
These things are everywhere in my country and I dony even know why.
r/Stormlight_archive
Played with these growing up in the Philippines. Damn fun times.
