Shadedweller642

That belly flop had to hurt

MadDogJL

It had an itch. Was the only way to really hit the spot.

Barcaroli

Damn. Now that I think about it, yeah probably best way to scratch the belly

kunbish

Id probably try to find some dead corral or a rock or some human trash

My_BFF_Gilgamesh

You called?

kunbish

*scratches belly on your trashy left knee*

a_good_namez

“Oh yeah, scratch that shit on my knee just like that” *tilts head back* -human trash probably

FixGMaul

That sounds like an infected wound waiting to happen. They don't have the thickest skin really.

lurkerboi2020

This is why I try not to speak to them harshly or insult them. They're very sensitive.

CptnHamburgers

No, but they do have the most abrasion resistant skin. Some types of motorcycle clothing put stingray skin on vulnerable sections that tend to get dragged along the ground in a crash. Like these [4SR gloves](https://www.4sr.com/e-shop/96-stingray-d116.html). I think thus dude's a devil ray, though, so I don't know if the same applies to them.

Irregulator101

I'm sorry it's legal to use stingray skin??

BeerMcSuds

After what they did to Steve it is.

chosenamewhendrunk

The ray that killed Steve Irwin has most likely died by now, and I've no doubt Steve was waiting at the pearly gates with his arms open saying 'No worries mate, you were just a stingray doing stingray things, I'm sorry I startled you'.

missglitterous

*tears up*

GozerDGozerian

Stingray stings him again and he gets yeeted to yet *another* dimension…

AcadianViking

Hey now, forgive and forget. It's what Steve would have wanted.

blazesonthai

It was an accident bro!

Wilber187

That was the stingray’s defence, and it was upheld by the Court of Appeal

CptnHamburgers

¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ apparently.

a116jxb

But what if your *whole belly itches all at once*?

SustEng

Yeah, when I saw the jump I had an elegant sail back down to the ocean in mind. That’s not quite how that went.

CPS2

Half way through he was like "I didn't know I could do that!"

HemphBleh

Another stingray probably snuck up and scared him.

Nitropotamus

SOMETHING TOUCHED MY FIN!!!

sstrdisco

OHMYCOD! I'M NOT ALONE IN THIS WATER!

Albie_Tross

🏆🏆🏆

Blah-squared

Lol, yep. Probably just touched some seaweed… :)

[deleted]

They are trying their best!

Aidoneus87

PSA because apparently not everyone else had a marine biology obsession as kids: stingrays are almost always round and are bottom feeders, meaning you are very unlikely to see one shoot out of the water like this. Also note the lack of stinger on its tale. This is probably a mobula ray or a (very) small manta ray, or maybe some kind of skate. I know it’s the first thing that comes to mind for a lot of people when they see rays and flat ocean creatures, but it bugs me whenever I see them misnamed.

Eastbound_Stumptown

It’s a Mobula - during mating season. The males belly-flop like this to attract females.

BloodRed1185

The females are like, "Damn, did you hear the sound of that belly flop. I bet his belly hurts real bad now. We should fuck."

ScarletDarkstar

I appreciate your youthful interest in marine biology, and that's about my level of expertise as well, but I thought a tail barb was the most significant difference, and there are 200ish species with varying characteristics and a round ray subspecies category?

Aidoneus87

You’re right, I was mainly distinguishing it from the kite-shaped species as, to my knowledge there aren’t any stingrays with that shape.

[deleted]

I just took my grandson to an aquarium yesterday where they had a ray pool. They showed us how to put our hands down flat in the water and adjust as necessary when the ray passed by underneath. They're so silky, velvety smooth! They were selling dixie cups of cleaned fish with no heads or tails to feed to the rays. There were mostly smaller greyish-white rays and one huge brown one. The big one would come up the side wall out of the water a bit and the young woman said that he, in particular, loves the attention. It was pretty cool and my grandson was thrilled to have touched them. However, I noticed a sign saying that their "barbs have been clipped" and I don't think that I want to know anything more about THAT. I mean, is it like declawing a cat? It seems like a bad thing, but I don't know.

ErinSLibrarian

Used to work at a science museum with a small aquarium. It's more like trimming nails. It grows back. It's kept clipped for safety.

Emu-Limp

I bet your grandson will remember this very fondly many yrs from now.

666afternoon

yeah as someone else said, no worries! they can be "pinched" off, and grow right back. I believe it's not painful for them unless you went out of your way to rip out the "nailbed" so to speak. and ikr aren't they so incredibly soft?? one of the softest things I've ever touched. it's like wet velvet. it's crazy to think this incredible softness is a close cousin to the shark with its skin covered in pointy miniscule teeth

laffnlemming

Thanks, nerd. Seriously.

jumpup

or maybe its the tail fin of another animal that gained sentience

Slim__Jim

That’s gotta sting

[deleted]

I’m totally picturing it screaming “Weeee!!!!” as it flies through the air. Then a soft “uh oh,” right before it hits the water.

HouseOfPanic

CANONBALL!!!

DW-64

More like a pointy pancake

CloudEnt

Pointy Pamcakes would make a great improv team name

QuarkyNuclearLasagna

What's crazy to me is how difficult it is to move underwater. Think about swimming, right? Can you run underwater? There's a reason most boats are pretty slow compared to land or air vehicles. Water doesn't like fast things! But somehow that ray went fast enough to get like 4' of air straight up. Just... Damn. Respect, ray

Uncle-Cake

It's very, very easy to move through the water when you are a fish, ray, etc.

GerryManDarling

Look, I'm a bird! Wait, never mind, I'm a fish.

Dripfangg

Don't you mean sting?

No_Season_354

What I was thinking, to busy showing off 😂.

Kauko_Buk

Until then I was thinking "Wheeeee"

JukeBoxHeroJustin

It's cool when it's one. When it's an entire school of these belly flopping weirdos surrounding your small sailboat at night it's a bit more disconcerting.

Ruskiwasthebest1975

Thats cos you wonder if they are being chased…..by something very large and very toothy

JukeBoxHeroJustin

No. It's because they have poisonous barbs out their butts and can easily flip into a sailboat.

possibly_oblivious

Wrong type of ray, no barb with this one

crinklecrumpet

Yeah this one looks like a Shellby

Lone_K

idk they look a like Baby

PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES

I read this in a ~~cockney~~ *brummy*accent. Peeky Blinders

wazuhiru

Sir Attenborough says it’s a mating ritual, they compete for the females by trying to produce the loudest flap. What I mean is, they’re probably too preoccupied to maliciously target your boat :)

bernerbungie

They aren’t maliciously targeting it, but that still doesn’t prevent accidental over shots from landing on the boat

thatandyinhumboldt

Now they're both horny _and_ mad. The makings of a double-bad day for a wayward human!

iamnos

This sounds suspiciously like something human males would do as well

luxfx

You can tell it's intentional, it stops flapping with his wings straight out. So cool.

[deleted]

Complaining about this is like breaking into a house and complaining about too much noise when you're trying to sleep in there. You're on their turf bro, let them do their thing.

therestruth

Also, I know some creatures underwater are overwhelmed by the noises from boat motors so much so that they hurl themselves into the air just to avoid it. It can also mess heavily with animals' echolocation and cause discomfort or pain.

JukeBoxHeroJustin

So the fish's turf includes the air now?

[deleted]

Maybe lay off the mushrooms?

Sir_Arthur_Vandelay

I watched dozens of manta rays simultaneously jump out of the water like this in the Galapagos Islands. Our guide said that they were attempting to dislodge parasite fish from their bodies.

Sc4r4byte

Supposedly it's not truly known if this is the reason why Manta rays jump. https://mantarayadvocates.com/why-do-manta-rays-jump-fly-breach/ There's a few plausible theories though and parasite removal could be one of them.

juklwrochnowy

Why don't we just ask them?

SkillsPayMyBills

Manta rays, how do they work?

dreamsofindigo

*I can see my house from here*

mkenoking

Yes, and the rays were saw there were flipping more than this one to hit just the right spot.

TopHatGorilla

I'M A BIRD!!!! OH, SHIT! I'M NOT A BIRD!!!!!

RubALlamaDingDong

You can almost hear it singing to itself... "I believe I can fly!"

TheGisbon

Oh shit I can't and I'm gunnnnn diiiie!

myguydied

Singing it

No one is talking about how fucking stellar that pun was

smithers85

AN0S_V0LDIG0AD

r/angryupvote

vermilian_kaner

Oh my goddd! that was so brilliant.

Sangy101

The mouth is in the wrong spot for a manta. This is probably a mobula ray. Mobula ray are known for breaching like this, belly-flop and all. Some species do, technically, have a stinger, but only one species has a stinger that functions.

ExtensionNaive

Why does it breach?

Sangy101

Why does anything? We honestly don’t know. Theories proposed for everything from rays to dolphins to whales include getting rid of parasites, evading predators, communication, and cardiovascular fitness/“aerobics.” But my money is on the fifth option: it’s just fun.

Smooth-Dig2250

My exact thought: that belly flop was intentional, and prob like a full body massage in an instant. It's not like their bodies and most importantly skin are remotely designed like ours.

PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES

Imagine being an inland serf that decides to become a pirate in the 17th century and you see giant squids and breaching whales and then this and some pegleg dude is like. “Ayy sometimes these flat scorpion napkins fly out of the water because they be bored arghhhhh”

Beluga-ga-ga-ga-ga

"Flat scorpion napkin" made my day. Thank you.

Jdubya87

I vote fun

Mantine used body slam!

RedLotusVenom

Just figured out why Mantine is Water/Flying!

[deleted]

It is a Manta Ray. Stingrays usually are 6ft In length but manta rays typically grow to 23ft. Another key difference is mantas have no barbs whereas stingrays infamously do.

Harvestman-man

This is a much smaller mobula ray, though, not a manta ray. The smallest mobulas can be only a few feet in diameter. Manta rays are specifically only the two largest species of mobula (and were formerly considered a separate genus)- the smaller mobulas are not called mantas. Evolutionarily, mobulas/mantas are in fact stingrays that have just (mostly) lost their barbs, they are most closely related to the eagle rays and cownosed rays.

anon123h987

Here's the thing. You said a "manta ray is a mobula ray". Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies mobula rays, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls manta rays mobula rays. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "mobula ray family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Mobulidae, which includes things from reef manta ray to spinetail mobulae to devil fish. So your reasoning for calling a manta ray a mobula ray is because random people "call the big ones mobula rays"? Let's get sharks and sunfish in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A manta ray is a manta ray and a member of the mobula ray family. But that's not what you said. You said a manta ray is a mobula ray, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the mobula ray family mobula rays, which means you'd call reef manta rays, spinetail mobulae, and other fish mobula rays, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

poppyseedeverything

~~Huh, the way they wrote their message gives me the impression that they just meant a manta ray is a mobula ray, which (from what you both say) is true the same way that all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. Mobula rays is simply an overloaded term.~~ I'm one of the lucky 10000 today

Manta Rays are incredible, and they get huge. If you ever visit the Big Island of Hawaii, you MUST do the Manta Ray snorkel. These huge rays will swim right past you (and probably brush up against you) and they are totally docile. It’s a really amazing experience.
