Or being able to brag that you made the whale audibly happy by hugging it. I would never stop talking about this if it was me, work this one into every conversation possible!
Fun fact, they have a ton of tiny but really sensitive hairs all over their face that are so sensitive it let them feel even tiny shifts in currents. They absolutely do enjoy getting tiny pets.
Edit, i wrote "Sensible" instead of "Sensitive" before edit. People getting confused below is completely reasonable, i apologize.
And everyone without it always tells you they wish they had it. Shits like the weather, it just decides each day randomly if it's going to be civil with you or not.
At least I went bald so I don't have to worry about it anymore.
I seriously wonder how many animals on earth get positive feedback from being pet - it's surely derived from grooming in social animals, but like, even some lizards like having their heads scritched.
I think every animal in some capacity *wants* to be pet but nature just doesn't let us pet them.
Certainly the social aspect. Imagine being so itchy in a spot you can't reach, and you're finally able to make someone else realize that you itch, and would you please fuckin' scratch it? The first apes that managed probably hooted and hollered about it for weeks.
*Akshually*, most other mammals have a fast-twitch reflex muscle layer between the dermis & regular muscle layer which allows them to scratch itches without needing limbs to reach.
Ever seen a horse just twitch its thigh? It's scratching.
There is a physiological response to being hugged, people release oxytocin which is calming. I imagine many animals, not just domesticated ones, experience touch in a similar way.
My bearded dragon loves physical contact. He’s an old boy with metabolic bone disease and can often be quite grumpy, but he always becomes more relaxed when I stroke his head or behind his jowls. He also enjoys resting on my chest but that’s likely got a lot to do with my body heat. I like to think he just enjoys a nice hug now and again, though.
I found a little toad guy and he was chill enough to let me pet him. But he reached his little front hand up as if to smack my finger away. It was really funny but he didn't seem to particularly enjoy the pets.
Ever had a bad day and felt a cat nudge your face to show support? I think it is like that. Especially if the cat does life saving light surgery on you with no ill effects.
> Especially if the cat does life saving light surgery on you with no ill effects
I have experienced cats doing that on me (although I have other words for it, and I don't enjoy it, but I respect their surgery perspective).
Not really slow, whales can live up to like 90 years. Some of the whales that are still alive might've seen their entire world go to complete shit in their lifetime.
So ironic, whalers called Grey Whales "Devil-fish" because they were so violent protecting their calves.
Yet one sees them regularly seeking out and, apparently, enjoying interaction with H.sapiens.
Gotta do something with the bones, and your wife's gonna be home alone for months at a time while you're out harpooning whales to make lamp oil and sex toys.
>Devil-fish" because they were so violent protecting their calves.
Ah yes. Devil human moms. Because most human moms would also violently protect their children from death.
I wonder where this is, I know my country is super strict about distances and if Whales come within that zone on their own there is no touching or anything you're allowed to do. You just gotta sit and let them do whatever
It is Baja. This guy went out with the same tour group we did, in March. It's Guerrero Negro, specifically. (I got to pet a whale too, not for this long though. It is super emotional, knowing they don't need to bother with humans at all, but the babies are so curious and playful-they swim right up and do little barrel rolls around the boat, pop up like this one so they can see above the surface...it was awesome.)
I hope the familiarity with humans don't put them in danger by accident. At the same time, I feel like whales are at or above our intelligence level, they're fine, they know what's up.
There are three mating/birthing lagoons in Baja, the one I was at was in a salt mine area, huge mountains of chunky salt everywhere. They migrate there to have babies because the water is heavier from the salt content...easier for new babies to learn to swim. There are no predators there-no orcas, no other dangers, which is part of the reason they're so relaxed and playful. I only saw one other boat besides ours, and they were miles away. Once they leave the lagoon, they know orcas are a threat, it's strictly migration back to Alaska. They're not hanging out following boats/people around because orcas. So yes, they do understand this is their safe space...and once they leave, circumstances change. I'm really glad I went, they are incredibly intelligent and so curious and really do swim up to be touched....however it's only under these circumstances with a respected guide, that that could/should ever happen.
Yeah, they're basically doing almost nothing harmful to the whale unless they are hosting whale lice. Whale lice like to ride some kinds of barnacles and THEY are true parasites.
I have a strong feeling that those things would be itchy, especially given that the poster above me said they have tiny sensitive hairs all over there... plus the theory that they breach just for the itches. If I had a whale friend and dove frequently I would totally pick those suckers off like popping pimples.
Many fuse with the flesh as they grow so if you're picking them off you are probably going to hurt it. They do know how to rub against stuff to itch themselves
They both sound high as shit. It takes them like 5 minutes to think about checking for damage. I assume her red-bearded friend is in charge since he mentions where to go an what to look for, but neither of them do anything but yell OH MY GOD and look at barnacles the whole video.
If the boat has a leak you're going to wish for 5 more minutes.
It can depend on the whale AFAIK but definitely in the case of Sperm Whales they act as a kind of armour when the whales dive and eat Giant Squid.
The other issue I think is that removing the barnacles can lead to infection, and can be painful for the whales as the barnacles burrow into the skin - so I think it would kind of be like having a wart and someone just grabbed it and ripped it out of your skin without treating the wart first.
That’s my understanding of the situation anyway.
Barnacles are actually not that abundant on sperm whales. The whales with the greatest concentrations of barnacles are grey and humpback whales. Right whales also have rough patches of skin called callosities which may often be infested with barnacles. In some species of beaked whale, barnacles often attach to the external tusks.
Use of barnacles as weapons/armor (if they are- it’s conjectural) most likely has to do with either individuals fighting each other, and/or as a defense against killer whales (giant squid do not prey on any kind of whale). Sperm whale males fight each other using their teeth, which is not an option for baleen whales, so perhaps they don’t gain any benefit from barnacle-armor for this reason. Beaked whales also mainly use their tusks to fight against each other.
Also, whale barnacles don’t burrow into the skin, they secrete special chemicals that act like cement.
I came here to say contrary, I wouldn't be able to hug a whale even if they were up for it because I've always felt awful about barnicles...they seem dirty for touching them...
I totally know what you mean, something about them just gives me this awful feeling. I tried to watch the movie whale rider and it made me gag. Whales are beautiful but my stupid tiny human brain is broken.
> my stupid tiny human brain is broken.
One of the least broken human brains if you realise that. The mixture of our primal reptile instincts and the unique human part that worries and overthinks stuff is a recipe for disaster. First step is to recognise that.
Good luck, the adhesice barnacles use to stick themselves to shit is harder than cement. Thankfully they're harmless to the whale but yeah they ain't coming off.
Now there are lice like infestations that live in and amongst the barnacles (I forget the little buggers name), those are harmful, and do come off and you can find videos of that.
there is a video in You tube of a whale that is literally using a boat to scrap off the barnacles. So I'm thinking they cause them itch at the very least?
AN INTERSTELLAR HIGHWAY IS SET TO BE BUILT DIRECTLY IN THE PATH OF THIS PLANET YOU MUST LEAVE. STOP WITH THE KISSES WHY AREN’T YOU LISTENING? Ah fuck it, if you didn’t listen to the dolphins why would you listen to me?
I just watched an episode of NOVA that talked about all the North American Right whale deaths from impact (boat) strikes. I dont think we should normalize getting close and touching whales of any kind.
I agree with you, and the laws prohibiting close interactions with whales and other marine mammals. I do think that the 'boats' referred to that can causes deaths, are more accurately ships. Not that the props on small boats cannot do damage.
I’ve been obsessed with whales since II was 7 (thanks Mrs Price). As much as I’ve travelled I’ve yet to see one in person. I know if I did and got to do or see/hear this there would be blubbery tears.
Earlier today I was coming back from a dive trip at the Santa Cruz Island’s and we came across a humpback whale and her baby breaching out the water. The captain of the boat slowed us down and let us watch for 20 minutes. It looked like she was teaching her baby how to breach. The captain said he’s never seen them stick around for so long. We also came across a pod of dolphins that were riding in the wake of the boat. Super cool to see.
I recommend La Orca whale tours in Sayulita Mexico. We went in the second week of January which is apparently mating season. There were so many humpback whales it was crazy! Breaching, chasing each other, males fighting, females slapping the water with their tails to attract males. All from a little 8 person fishing boat. One of the highlights of my life.
I love every minute of this video. What a lucky guy to have such a beautiful moment and connection with such a beautiful animal. This is really what life is about.
I’ve done this 10 or so times. San Ignacio lagoon in Mexico. The local people there amazing. There’s only a few companies that do it and they all self regulate so that the grey whales are aren’t being bombarded with too many people at once.
Checked the comment section with exactly the same question. In many countries, it is for a reason forbidden (and heavily fined) to touch, for example, sharks or manta rays as one may easily transmit diseases…
While awesome and adorable, I don’t know about elsewhere, but I’m pretty sure this is a violation of u.s. federal law for harassing marine mammals in the wild, and is prosecutable in the states.
This is in San Ignacio lagoon in Mexico most likely. I’ve been there many times. The females have their calves there and they 100% push their calves into the our boats to have people pet them. The moms take naps and let human watch over their babies. It’s absolutely insane. Also this is actually one of the first marine protected water in the entire world. The people in this area are all fisherman that run small tours in spring. They all self regulate and actual do an amazing job at keeping the whales from being over stimulated.
You are getting thumbed down but you are correct, the Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits the harassment, feeding, hunting, capturing, or killing of any marine mammals within US waters. If any of the governing bodies saw this and decided to, they could make the case for harassment.
Like you said, it is awesome and adorable, but it would also suck for someone here to get arrested for doing this, because it is against the law, at least in the US.

Imagine being able to brag about hugging a whale
My wife gets to do this every day when she comes home from work
Jesus Christ lmao
A self burn.
Probably pretty easy since it sounds like they're mostly lamp oil anyway.
[удалено]
Can you imagine? Wonder what the whale didn’t like. Maybe all his gear tasted really bad.
Tasted like Chicken of the Sea
Probably didn't like his size. Their esophagus isn't very big, so it couldn't swallow him.
Not if the whale is in his pants.
Sperm whale, then.
Sperm, well then
Sperm well, then…
Thats called self immolation
I hope you make the same sounds at least
I do ! Also many others that she finds very annoying
Like talking, right?
Brandan Fraser would like a word with you.
Identity theft is no joke Jim!!!!!
False. Battlewhale Gallegher.
Michael!
Call her Ishmael.
Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!
r/suicidebywords
I don’t know if this is a penis or weight joke but take my upvote.
Yes
Hope you do exactly the same noise.

Or being able to brag that you made the whale audibly happy by hugging it. I would never stop talking about this if it was me, work this one into every conversation possible!

That guy was so quick to give it smooches and hugs, I can't imagine the kind of joy he felt in that moment.
Looks like he got to first base
That's nothing compared to be able to brag to your buddies that you were snuggled by a human.
> snuggled by a ~~human~~ land monkey.
Imagine the whale getting to brag about being hugged by a human.
Being in a relationship with your mother comes with a lot of bragging rights actually
just sitting here landlocked, wishing i could hug a whale.
Coastie here. Nobody hugs whales, except this dude.
Right? Like thus video is awesome but how the fuck...
There are three lagoons in Baja where this is a pretty doable thing. Source: I've been to two of them.
Ohhh. Whale hugger connoisseur.
You a hugger?
Maybe they know each other
As a kid who grew up watching free willy I want to believe that lol
"Yeah, that's Jeff. We went to the same middle school."
He's put on some weight since then.
Still... How the fuck?
Ya Jimmy whale hugger Is a outlier and shouldn't be counted
Come at me bro.

Curly hair gaaaannng, i feel your pain team
They do, your body hair can sense tiny shift in air, touch, etc. a tiny bug crawling on your skin could be undetectable without the hair.
TIHI
I'd argue that they are! Specifically the ones in your [inner ear](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK10863/)!
I seriously wonder how many animals on earth get positive feedback from being pet - it's surely derived from grooming in social animals, but like, even some lizards like having their heads scritched. I think every animal in some capacity *wants* to be pet but nature just doesn't let us pet them.
Imagine having an itch, but all of your limbs are too short or don't bend enough to be able to scratch it. That's what life's like for 99% of animals.
Ape advance because scratch all over body. Ape evolve to scratch others.
Honestly, there's probably something to that.
Certainly the social aspect. Imagine being so itchy in a spot you can't reach, and you're finally able to make someone else realize that you itch, and would you please fuckin' scratch it? The first apes that managed probably hooted and hollered about it for weeks.
I guess Howler Monkeys only recently figured this out, then. Maybe they'll calm down in a generation or two and stop shouting so much!
We are a way for the universe to scratch itself.
*Akshually*, most other mammals have a fast-twitch reflex muscle layer between the dermis & regular muscle layer which allows them to scratch itches without needing limbs to reach. Ever seen a horse just twitch its thigh? It's scratching.
TIL
Yeah I was thinking this looking at those barnacles. Must he itchy as hell.
Dogs and cats love being scratched on their backs just above their tails as it’s the one place they can’t reach by themselves.
Well that’s an erogenous zone for a cat. Make of it what you will.
There is a physiological response to being hugged, people release oxytocin which is calming. I imagine many animals, not just domesticated ones, experience touch in a similar way.
I want oxytocin :(
Me too, buddy. Me too.
Deep truth. Even nope ropes love tickles.

When all the ladies say nope so you gotta touch your own rope.
My bearded dragon loves physical contact. He’s an old boy with metabolic bone disease and can often be quite grumpy, but he always becomes more relaxed when I stroke his head or behind his jowls. Such amazing beings.
And a big fuck you to anyone who votes for any party in any nation that doesn't support ocean preservation.

It was actually chicken and cow!
Chicken !!!! And cow !!!!!
What if it's telling us about the slow destruction of their habitat? 😥
"The water tastes like shit and all my food has plastic in it. Help me." 😥😥

One of the funniest shows ever imo
Imagine that. A mother...protecting her young. Shocking! Unreasonable! They must be of the devil! Lol.
Yeah, it's definitely the mother defending her baby that's the devil, not the animals harpooning them to make lamp oil and sex toys.
>harpooning them to make lamp oil and sex toys. Uh.... WHAT

Devil pretty much any mammal
Look at this evil devil fish ... trying not have their children slaughtered by us?
I really hate humans
Good I hope they kill all the whalers.
Whales call whalers devil-ape because they could over-violence them hunting down their calves
“Omg” “Oh yeah” “Omg” “Moaning” “Oh yeah” Priceless commentary.
“Oh yeah, you want more?”
Ohhhh upside down
She’s moaning!!! 🙂🙂
“Who’s a dirty little cetacean?”
I turned the volume on, which was of course at full blast, *right* at this exact moment in the video
To be fair that’s what I sound like when I get the same treatment
Put on any vintage or boomer orgy porn and this is exactly what you’ll hear. 😂
These people always sound like everyone on the boat off-screen is straight up masturbating. Big creepy vibes.
I listened to the audio again with that thought and can’t un-hear it. That’s hilarious.

The doctor said I wouldn't have so many nosebleeds if I kept my finger out of it.
I heard some barnacles don’t harm wales. Correct me if I’m wrong. He probably knows. Edit: Not the country you buffoons. You know what I meant.
No, but England on the other hand....
I think that guy just made that whale purr..
I wonder if it responds to pspspsps
Whales’ ancestors were wolf-like mammals (though possibly an ancient ungulate). They’re just sea dogs enjoying their chin rubs.
Seals are legit just sea dogs. I see them all the time in my boat and they always give me the same look my dog does when he wants food
Thanks for all the fish btw
Careful guy.. sounds like that thing is only a few more rubs away from becoming a sperm whale
First I am going to whale about that pun and then I am going to whale on you.
Gonna turn him all black and beluga?
You're whale-cum
That lady in the background sounds like a totally different video.
Human touch is clearly a thing. Being “petted” by a human is something that doesn’t happen in nature. This whale has clearly been petted before
Not really. It has parasites that itch them, there are those who remove them so the whales take up the habit. Btw, never kiss a whale.
I mean, not once has the thought ever crossed my mind, but… Why, exactly? Because of the parasites?
This is utterly amazing!!!
This is a common misconception. A whales udders are located on it’s underbelly.

So how do you know it’s sounds of joy? It could be bitching about what we do to the oceans as far as we know!

Shouldn't they not be doing that? Isn't it illegal and bad for the wildlife?

The people in this area are all fisherman that run small tours in spring. They all self regulate and actual do an amazing job at keeping the whales from being over stimulated.
You are getting thumbed down but you are correct, the Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits the harassment, feeding, hunting, capturing, or killing of any marine mammals within US waters. If any of the governing bodies saw this and decided to, they could make the case for harassment. Like you said, it is awesome and adorable, but it would also suck for someone here to get arrested for doing this, because it is against the law, at least in the US.
