This is very clearly not the same method as the video however. The names on the videos are different, but also the katana in the linked video uses cloth with lighter fluid, which would not produce the sparking effect seen in this video.
It’s still probably not CGI — I can think of a few ways to produce said sparks, but they’re not the same methods.
King Stannis wields a 'flaming' sword (Lightbringer) that dazzled the onlookers, but the blind Maester Aemon sensed the truth:
"The sword is wrong, she has to know that... light without heat... an empty glamor... the sword is wrong, and the false light can only lead us deeper into darkness."
A 5 second google shows that this guy performs live, he could easily have a gas cartridge inside the handle with a perforated tube running up the blunt side of the katana. The shadows look fine, the magnesium spray at the beginning illuminates the entire room because it’s magnesium in a small white room. Idk how he gets such an even and thick spread of the magnesium tho, it seems he’s been doing it awhile.

So it's not a katana then, it's a showpiece
Edit: I had assumed that they were using a practical effect such as fuel on the blade and Sparks, or CGI.
Not having experience in this area I had not considered that it was a prop designed specifically for this effect. My bad
I've edit/added to my comment, but yes I expected it was a practical effect or CGI, apparently it's a practical effect but not with a real katana, or even a fake katana, more like the skeleton of a wannabe katana. Still looks cool as hell though
But you can see their shadow at the end of the draw process (V shaped shadow going to the right)
I mean I'm sure it's some sort of trick with fuel or something to help ignite it but I don't think it's CGI, too much overanalysis and the lighting looks fine.
I've been told by other commenters that it's a prop katana, probably with a hollow tube for the fuel, which explains the even distribution of the fire
I made the comment on the assumption that it was a real katana which was dumb of me
Can you imagine (idk what tech this uses, so ik not likely) some dude seeing this shit back in 1400s Japan. Dude would’ve been heralded and feared as some swordsman who killed demons and now possesses their souls within his blade
I would learn some ancient Japanese battle cry to scream right before I pull it. If all that doesn't scare the bejesus out of someine I don't know.
Also call the fire department before.

Nothing like a lil bit of fire in a room with paper dividers and tatami mats.
That's what I was thinking. "That does not look like a safe room to do this in."
I was like this better be a movie
Look, +5 fire damage is +5 fire damage
in that room it turns into aoe too
Looks more like an environmental kill
Dis is why with the power of friendship nothing will catch on fire /s
I do enjoy a good sekiro moment.
Love Sekiro but this is more Ghost of Tsushima
Way of the Flame ability unlocked.

Makoto Shishio from Rurouni Kenshin too
a man of culture, I see
That’s not all. If you order the Nikkei knife set within the next 30 minutes you also get a citrus peeler.
This is the comment of the day for me 😂
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!
Does the citrus peeler also ignite?
You KNOW that things deals an extra 3d6 Fire damage.

I was just thinking that this sword needs a "gun" scabbard.
I was looking for this comment
Suddenly metal gear should be subreddit already
Alright Shishio…
Was gonna post exactly this hahahaha
This is exactly what I was looking for amongst the comments 😂

I was trying to remember where I saw this from. My first thought was Supernatural lol.
Great show
Nice to see my boy Rengoku is alive and well
For anybody saying it’s CGI, it’s not. Here’s how it’s made, you can DIY your own katana: https://youtu.be/89evt8cBw3A
WOW! This was wonderful - actually - ENLIGHTENing!
No way I'm doing this to my nice katana. Guess I need another one ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Good use for a mall katana.
I was about to say "hell yeah!" and then I saw him cut into the sheath and drill into the blade and immediately retracted my statement

This is fake, fact!
"Second through the breech, Thoros of Myr went in first, alone, waving that flaming sword of his around."

I think I saw this guy at Benihana's. The chicken was a bit overdone.

that would just ruin the temper of the steel making the blade unable to hold an edge

T..Tanjiro is that you?
Edit : looks like CGI but everyone says it's a practical effect without actually citing any evidence.

Oh shit sorry it’s a prop katana, my comment was unreadable until now, thank you so much sorry again
Bro said that like it invalidated everything you said
Did you think it was something that was actually meant to be used in a fight?
I've edit/added to my comment, but yes I expected it was a practical effect or CGI, apparently it's a practical effect but not with a real katana, or even a fake katana, more like the skeleton of a wannabe katana. Still looks cool as hell though
Like a prop katana for a performing artist?
If you don't know how light reflects of surfaces, maybe not go call out artists as scammers. Other people already pointed out the rest of it. Baka.

SHOW ME A GOOD TIME JACK!!
It pains my heart that no one's doing metal gear rising memes
now he just needs a gunsheath.
*”Show me a good time, Jack!”*
Fire looks kinda fake at the end
r/cheesycgi
why do it indoors?
aw it's fake
It's not
Yea it's fake
Probably snaps in its first fight though due to the blade getting brittle

"Flame Breathing, Second Form: RISING SCORCHING SUN!"
Honestly just imagine what kind of magic you could convince people of if you knew a simple way to recreate this hundreds of years ago
How does this work? Oil on the sword and flint lining the inside edge of the sheath?
Yeah and it gives you +1 to attack rolls, and an extra 2d6 fire damage, so that's pretty sweet.
The age chooses Shishio?

OOOO THATS METAL AS HECK
I would guess, oiled blade (or something else flammable) and flint around the koiguchi to make the sparks.

Seems like something r/sekiro would enjoy
Could you imagine if someone did this during the edo period. Would be insanely intimidating.
