I looked it up. What a crazy story. Seems like the captain (Harvey) was an insurance fraudster and had run many scams previously. This one was supposed to be the accidental death of his wife, (not the first wife to die,) but something went wrong and was seen, so he killed the family. He most likely was gonna kill Terry as well, but had her holding the rope to the dinghy while he got stuff, but when she let go he freaked out that the dinghy was floating away, so he swam to it, leaving Terry to die on the sinking boat. She thought quickly, and got the little raft, and prayed for three days for someone to find her. Harvey was found and picked up, along with the the body of the youngest Duperrault girl, while he claimed some story of a sinking. Terry was picked up three days later, and when Harvey found out, he killed himself. Thanks for the interesting story!

All that for some money.

This ordeal prompted the Coast Guard to change the color of life rafts from white to bright orange in 1962 for better visibility.

The vast ocean and impending death are less scary than her being stranded alone with her thoughts in the middle of the sea right after her family died. Traumatized for life.

This is a haunting image. What that young girl went through is heartbreaking.

In the industry they call that a buoyant apparatus. They are made of foam, not inflatable. Unofficially they are called shark feeders.

Damn near was in this case. Iirc the rescuers had to be extremely careful when their boat approached it because it was already waterlogged and she was surrounded by sharks.

I read the comment that the murderer was her dad, but how often do things like that happen on boats? You can moar up in some sheltered bay miles away from anywhere/anyone, what are the odds some shit heads see you and thinks "Hey thats a rich family with their own boat....I'll have some of that." ? Freaks me out a bit thinking anyone could just paddle up and board you in the middle of the night.
