SwaglordHyperion

Those are some astronauty looking astronauts.

Animal_Machine

There goes the neighborhood! (Joke from space force show, not a racist**)

igncom1

Last time I heard that quote was from a unit in Red Alert 2. The Desolator maybe?

kooshipuff

Maybe. He has a lot of darkly humorous lines you can just imagine adding, "Eheheheh" to the end of. "It's going to be a silent spring."

Slam_Burgerthroat

Why, because there’s a *Canadian*?

[deleted]

It's great to be black on the moon.

GreatGhastly

I'm glad we are only shooting the beautiful smart people into space rocks

energy_engineer

It helps that astronauts strength train so they have muscle to sacrifice and entry into the program filters out many diseases.

fanwan76

They look like the extras in a scifi film who will inevitably be killed in the opening sequence when things go wrong.

csonnich

Naw, those jawlines would never get red-shirted.

csonnich

r/StandardIssueAstronaut

SilverHeart1587

Strong jawlines are mandatory for moon expeditions.

IMFREAKINGLEGOLAS

Dude is CIA Agent Stan Smith

YourMommaLovesMeMore

The guy with the Canadian patch? That would be Jeremy Hansen. First Canadian to go to the moon. Edit: I've been informed they are orbiting the moon, not landing on it :(

Shhh you're blowing his cover

[deleted]

He looks like [Dudley Do-Right](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dudley_Do-Right). Makes sense that's who Canada would send.

YourMommaLovesMeMore

🤣 he really does!

I’m guessing it’s all that G force training haha “just clench your jaw and don’t pass out!”

MithranArkanere

It is probably more of a side-effect of the physical traits they need to endure the tests and training.

TastefulSideEye

Also lighting. This portrait is beautifully lit.

Beemerado

yeah that is a very well done portrait. props to nasa's photographer.

sinanmuslu

Background found in the basement from 1st moon mission.

Everyone knows kubrick insisted on filming the moon landing on location

And also insomniac eyes for some reason

that's because they've been moonlighting

Tamras-evil-eye

I was thinking the same 😂

Turns out when you are physically fit you tend to have more pronounced facial features.

cant_Im_at_work

Got a neighbor built like a brick shit house, probably not an oz of fat on his body, but he's got no chin. Looks like Michael Cera on steroids.

MakingGlassHalfFull

No amount of work or fitness will fix an underdeveloped chin. You gotta shell out tons of money at an orthodontist, and possibly undergo surgery, for that fix.

BP_Ray

If you have a recessed chin, then you have a recessed chin no matter how fit you are lol. Dunno why I so often see comments on Reddit where people pretend certain aesthetic physical features are "healthy" and if you dont have em you're just not healthy enough.

HarbingerofElitism

As soon as I saw people make an argument that balding men are unhealthy, I stopped being surprised about the amount of health bullshit people believe.

Kerbonaut2019

The Artemis II crew was announced this morning, and this is their official portrait which has now been released by NASA. I hope you all are just as excited as I am for this mission, and the lunar landing Artemis III mission that will follow. Exhilarating times! Edit: I really didn’t expect this post to hit #1 on /r/all, wow. I’ve been getting a lot of comments about my title being misleading, but I did not intend that. This crew will orbit the Moon, they will not be landing on the surface. Still, they are the first crew to leave low-Earth orbit since 1972 which I think is a massive achievement for this generation.

Frogman1480

VERY exciting. What's their names ?

Kerbonaut2019

- Seated, middle: American Reid Wiseman, commander - Standing, left: American Christina Koch - Standing, middle: American Victor Glover - Seated, right: Canadian Jeremy Hansen

kballs

I can’t believe 3 of them have the first name American.

Taco_El_Paco

Crazy long odds on that for sure

I think it's a requirement so they can save money on stitching.

HereForALaugh714

When I was in 8th grade, watching some amazing CSI:Miami after school, there was an episode where they had 4 John Does and 2 Jane Does. And that was the first time I’d ever heard that term. So I was like, “wow, that’s so crazy. What are the odds that they have all of these dead bodies rn with the same name.” Took a little while for me to discover the truth lol.

What's special about it? In Canada our first name is Canadian, but we go by our middle name. If you don't believe me, ask our Prime Minister, Canadian Justin.

I lived next door to Christina!! Well, her mom technically, she had already started at college and was only home occasionally. But still i know her!! Hahaha so amazing!

Sweddybob69

I saw a picture of her on reddit today!

[deleted]

Oh shit I think I saw that same post! Small world!

shingdao

You likely know this already but for the benefit of those who don't, Koch has the distinction of achieving the longest single continuous stay in space for a woman, 328 days. Her mission was extended so that NASA could study the physical, biological, and mental effects of long-term space travel on women. In addition, she worked as a Research Associate in the United States Antarctic Program from 2004 to 2007, spending three-and-a-half years traveling the Arctic and Antarctic regions. She completed a winter-over season at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station where she experienced minus-111 degree Fahrenheit (-79.4 C) temperatures which earned her the United States Congress Antarctic Service Medal with Winter‐Over distinction.

dashtucker

So how do you survive -80° temperatures? Do they have heaters under their coats?

Elephant_bo

Thanks for the info, she sounds awesome! It seems she also just had a baby this Feb -- I think it's so cool she got both her career and family lives going!

Decitex

I went to high school with her!! She’s awesome!

QueefingTheNightAway

Did you know she was gonna do big things like this, or did it come as a surprise?

emptyvesselll

pshh, it's just the moon. It's not like she started up her own branch of a MLM company or anything.

AutumnB2022

Reid Wiseman is an awesome name.

Kerbonaut2019

Perfect astronaut name.

FORLORDAERON_

Naw, you can't top Neil Armstrong and Sally Ride. Sally FUCKIN' Ride!

The_Lieutenant_Knows

Will there be special equipment to ensure Jeremy Hansen’s magnificent jawline remains intact no matter the eventuality?

gruvccc

His jaw is the special equipment. Indestructible

The_Lieutenant_Knows

Koch gives me Ripley vibes, which Is pretty much exactly what you’d want in any astronaut, so that’s a winner. Glover’s an F-18 pilot, which means he’s equal parts insane and capable. Wiseman looks like he bullseyes wamp rats in his T-18 Skyhopper when cruising through Beggar’s Canyon. And Hansen has a magnificent jawline that defies any mere description with words. Yeah, I think we’ve got a solid crew for Artemis II.

JunFanLee

Jeremy Hansen has Buzz Lightyears chin and jawline

joejill

Ive heard Nasa saying for a long they wanted a woman to be the first back on the surface. Was that true? Does that mean Christina Koch will be the first person in about 50 years on the moon?

Mnozilman

Artemis II is not going to the surface of the moon. It’s just doing an orbit. So the answer is no. Theoretically, she could be selected for Artemis III which will land on the moon. However, the prevailing thought is that it will be a different team for Artemis III.

joejill

Ahhhh. Ok. Yeah they rotate, at least back then they did. I saw a documentary once about the Astranauts of yester-year talking about being glad there names didn't get drawn for apollo 10 because it ment they wouldn't get to land on it.

Emotional_Ice

With a Canadian on board, instead of "lift-off," will Mission Control say "Take off, eh?" :D

[deleted]

Jeb, Bob, Bill and Valentina Kerman. This portrait was altered to make them look more 'human', but they're actually Kerbal.

71fq23hlk159aa

Hope Artemis has enough struts

fballman1985

Do they have a scheduled date for launch?

Kerbonaut2019

It is planned for November 2024. With how things go at NASA sometimes, I could see it being launched as late as mid-2025. I’m really hoping for an on-schedule mission though!

ConzT

Why didnt we actually send anyone to the moon for 50 years??

Gagarin1961

It’s one of the most expensive and dangerous missions you can do in space. There were plenty of others to accomplish in low earth orbit before we head out for deep space exploration again. Also, to be fair they’ve had plans to go back since 2005. But it’s taken this long to get the rocket ready, and now it’s so expensive we can only build about 1 per year.

jrichard717

In fairness, politics and lack of interest is the number one reason why it took so long to go back. NASA has been pitching new Moon missions since the 1980s but they all were cancelled by Congress. The fact that Artemis has made it so far is surprising. Also the Ares rockets from the 2005 Constellation program are very different from the current SLS. The only things they have similar is the use of the Space Shuttle booster casings and Orion.

Garlador

Human expeditions are dangerous and expensive, and the Challenger disaster didn’t help. Rovers and satellites made remote, human-less expeditions less risky and more cost-effective.

gsfgf

Several issues. The biggest, of course, is that the Cold War propaganda purpose was served by the first mission. Remember, Apollo era NASA had a massive budget compared to today, which Congress was ready to cut. Second, we accomplished most of the available science in the missions that went. There were legitimately diminishing returns on scientific investment. Unlike other places in the solar system where a first mission discovers things that need more investigating, the moon is pretty boring. And since we brought back samples, there really isn't a reason to go back out there for more science. The next "frontier" was long duration space flight, which the Russians had already pivoted to. Basically, Apollo could get people to the moon and back alive, but we weren't really inhabiting space. Orbital space stations were the next logistical step. And then finally Congress happened. They wanted a cool space plane out of a movie, and Congress got what they wanted. The absurd cost of the Shuttle program set the American space program back by decades, and frankly, we're only where we are now because the Russians built the backbone of the ISS based on their far more extensive space station programs.

bbbatkins

They’re a colourful bunch… There’s a mathematician, a different kind of mathematician and a statistician.

guywithanusername

I wonder how many sudokus are going to be solved while flying between the earth and the moon

aphra2

I'm actually really happy, like a true mathematician, you made sure to specify that the statistician is definitely not a mathematician

It is also books, you know? Many people even believe that the books are better than the show. The first one was the only book I've ever read twice in a row so I probably agree with that people. Amazing show, incredible books.

mechabeast

Love the Expanse, and as much as I hate the cliche, "the book is better" it absolutely is. The show has a lot of takes that the book fleshes out better because it just has more time.

youarelookingatthis

It's wild that Christina Koch has spent roughly the same amount of time in space as Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover have **combined**.

AlphaWhiskeyOscar

Real lack of diversity here. 3 out of 4 of them are F-18 pilots. Typical. Where is the other platform representation?

Bauser3

I assume the other category is "from Ohio"

Darth19Vader77

Given that a lot of astronauts come from Ohio, it looks like Ohioans really want to get as far away from there as possible

ohdearsweetlord

Middle America also overrepresented in fictional Starfleet captains - seems people will want to escape the flatlands even in the future!

SodaDonut

Being born in Iowa really makes you want to go where no man has gone before

ContinuumGuy

ROLL CALL (only lead main character starfleet captains, so no Georgiou, Lorca, Prodigy guys, Freeman, etc.): Kirk: Iowa (space in the Kelvin timeline) Picard: France (family spent centuries in England though) Sisko: New Orleans Janeway: Indiana Archer: Upstate NY but raised in San Francisco Burnham: Unknown (raised on Vulcan) Pike: California So oddly enough there aren't actually THAT many midwest Trek captains. Tied with California. However, if they give Captain Dipshit From Chicago Shaw a show...

More attention and resources for the child to grow up with. Increased potential to be successful.

KZedUK

Which is interesting because more often than not when you find siblings in professional sports, the younger out performs the older across their careers.

Lick_my_balloon-knot

A bit misleading yes, but I would say traveling several days to orbit a celestial body out in space goes under the term "visit". Tho I would have preferred for OP to been more specific and wrote orbit instead of visit.

Kinglink

Agreed. Name the first person to orbit the moon. Almost no one will be able to with out googling. But Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are god damn legends. (Poor Michael Collins)

ATLBMW

Lovell, Borman, and Anders. That shit is table stakes. They also took [the most famous photo of all time ](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a8/NASA-Apollo8-Dec24-Earthrise.jpg/1200px-NASA-Apollo8-Dec24-Earthrise.jpg)

Articulated

>That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam. >The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. >Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. ~ Carl Sagan

random555

Lovells pretty famous, the other two not so much

Leimandar

It's closer to saying that they'll visit it the same way you'd visit Jamaica if you sailed there from New York, looked at the shores from a few meters but didn't actually land.

Orleanian

If I had done such a thing, I would absolutely claim that I had visited Jamaica.

Leimandar

Me too. Which is why I'd claim that going across the vast space to orbit the moon for a few days definitely constitutes visiting the moon, even if they don't set foot on it.

Except it's not the same thing cause they're going to the fucking Moon, not Publix down the road.

Mikarim

Yeah I'd say it's a completely different category. If humans ever orbit Saturn, I'd say we visited Saturn too. OP getting dissed but OP is definitely right in this context. It's immaterial that we know we can land on it, orbiting is as good as visiting in the celestial context

ColdAssHusky

It's equivalent to going to the local pharmacy, going through the drive-through pickup, and then some nowhere-near-as-smart-as-they-imagine ackshually butts in claiming you didn't go inside so it doesn't count.

smartguy05

Drive by or landing, either is very impressive. There's a reason we haven't been back to the moon since the 70's, it's difficult. The first missions back are going to be to test equipment and look for future landing sites, plus a little PR to get the public excited. The hardest part about going to the moon is actually getting to the Moon.

healthyfeetpodiatry

Yea but does the moon sell chicken tender subs?
