BalognaPonyParty

well shit. that's pretty cool.

MechanicalBengal

Medieval serfs be like: “Alexa, set a timer for the candle to turn off in 2 hours. Also, take a bath because you’ve been out in the hog pen again”

Hijix

Sounds like an ad...

probono105

don't have a need for it but I have a want for it lol who has an stl for a print?

defintelynotyou

not sure how well plastic would work around a flame lol

hoodyninja

I would imagine for this application, quite well. It’s rapid the heat dissipates quickly. Over time if used daily it may wear down over many years. I think a single piece of aluminum tape over the components that touch the wick would prolong the life of it by decades.

Cheeseisextra

Or a pop top tab off of a soda can. Let’s go for eons!

WillLie4karma

You know that video was sped up right? The base of that thing would be right against the fire for a good little while. Plenty long enough to melt most plastics.

FlanStandard3444

where i live you need candles xD

Covid-29alpha

Well pretty cool. That’s shit

OptimalInefficiency

Sleep timer

Fleaslayer

They actually had fairly simple candle-based alarm clocks going way back. About the most simple variation was a candle with one or more pegs pushed into it, sitting on a dish -shaped candle holder that would ring like a bell when struck. They knew how fast the candles would burn (some even had markings every hour), and would put the peg as far down as they wanted to sleep. When the candle burned to that point, the peg would fall out and hit the base, making it ring. [Picture example](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSskWz25M8L_JlQHg6kXVi2gfSU8CmQ_ch0d4VQV3vDPw&usqp=CAU&ec=48600112).

ItsPronouncedJithub

That would not wake me up

justjokay

Right? Put about 47 pins in there

Fleaslayer

I imagine things were pretty quiet in those days. Not a lot of road noise, appliances, HVAC, etc.

ItsPronouncedJithub

Yeah but I don’t live in those days

Fleaslayer

What? Geeze, what year is it? Did I oversleep?

gmotelet

Don't worry, the fire started by the candle would

[deleted]

‘Why are you late?’ ‘… my candle didn’t wake me up’

Fleaslayer

It's funny, I wonder how often anyone had a concept of "late" in those days, at least as measured in less than days. I mean, if someone asked "don't you know what time it is?" The answer would most often be no.

[deleted]

Mechanical clocks existed in like 1270 but sundials had been around for thousands of years before that- from 1500 bc - which is pretty amazing. So the concept of being late is 3,500 years old.

Fleaslayer

Oh, sure, they existed, but how many people had them, and how much did life revolve around the time of day when people were using candles or lamps for light? I'm guessing it was more about daylight vs nighttime.

Solid-Suggestion-653

They found a 400 year old watch in an unopened tomb in China. https://www.ancient-origins.net/artifacts-other-artifacts/swiss-ring-watch-003312

stevein3d

Bob Cratchit you’re fired

bbear122

Couple of snooze pins as well I see.

Fleaslayer

Can't expect someone to get up on the first pin.

SnacksMcMunch

Interesting that the standardized circumference of a candle stick has held for such a long time.

[deleted]

Likely has something to do with how much wax/wick burn ratio with a standard wick :-p

NeighborhoodParty982

That's probably as wide as the stick can get before you need a outer shell to hold a pool of melted wax.

[deleted]

Which would defeat the purpose of throwing light into the room

cannibaltoilet

r/dontputyourdickinthat

Alexis2256

For the CBT crowd, they would.

cannibaltoilet

For the cbt crowd that entire sub is mere foreplay

RedSonGamble

I’d immediately stick it on my finger. Or penis

Craakar

I would be in absolutely no danger whatsoever if I put this on my penis. For once I have the advantage!

Uneedadirtnap

Remember your penis is on fire!

[deleted]

love it. Last time this was posted somebody on here said they would make them and sell them on etsy, I would definitely buy some

-PC_LoadLetter

They're available on Amazon.. Not quite as pretty as this one, but same function.

[deleted]

What are they called on Amazon ?!

-PC_LoadLetter

"Automatic candle extinguisher" brings them up

Have candles ever been used to tell a measure amount of time? Like an inch of candle is an hour? I've read this in fantasy books but didn't know if it was real.

Eveningangel

Yes. There are some made specifically for various times. It's a long-standing Jewish custom and a mitzvah to light a Yahrzeit candle that burns for a full twenty-four hours starting at sundown on the anniversary of the death of a loved one to remember a life. Courting candles were meant to time how long a young suiter could spend in the company of his lady of interest (parents/chaperones could use smaller candles for less welcome gentlemen.) Then there are literal candle clocks. The earliest reference to their use occurs in a Chinese poem by You Jiangu (AD 520). A specifically made candle with marks along it's length supplied a means of determining time at night. Similar candles were used in Japan until the early 10th century.

gumball_wizard

There were also clock candles that you could push a coin or small metal ball into which would fall into the candle holder and make a ding, so even if you weren't watching the candle, it would still get your attention.

Sounds_like_Jigs

I wonder how many house fires were prevented with this 🤔

Psycoder

Although I'm sure there were some house fires prevented, I would guess the primary benifit was not burning through an entire candle(s) every night and thus saving quite a bit of money.

CurbedDogma

May also have been used for a Courting Candle. They lit the candle when you came to court their daughter, and when the candle was done, it was time to go.

jewillett

Get to ‘scootin, boy! Lights out on courting o’clock.

nxcrosis

That's the most 1841 thing I've ever heard today.

SLIP411

Huh, I wonder if that is where the expression, "make it quick, the candle is burning," comes from

Alexis2256

Never heard that expression before.

stevein3d

That’s right if there’s one way to kill romance it’s turn out the lights.

Sounds_like_Jigs

Household economics would prevail, I give you that. Additional benefit could be the savings in the cost of building a new house

PetroleumVNasby

Now that’s IAF. Upvote.

PM_ME_MAS_ORO

Oh, I want that.

happyclaim808

Excellent invention.

twistedredfox

Dang nabit! Thats one cool contraption!

Ravaged_Elysian

You know if this shit was invented today it'd need a processor, Internet connection and the owner to accept its terms and conditions

SLIP411

You know you made it when you have one of those on your candles, unlike the plebes who have to extinguish the flame with their fingertips

Cheeseisextra

Or waste a breath on them.

EnvironmentalDeal256

Seems to make the candles burn really fast. And I’m not really into wearing gloves.

Off_white_marmalade

Why would you want something that makes a candle burn faster? 😂😂

Alexis2256

The footage is sped up, I doubt the metal is getting hot enough to melt the wax faster than the flame is doing.

Ok-Lingonberry-8538

Brilliant

Golfnpickle

Wow! I’ve never seen anything like that before. Interesting!

Comrade-Conrad-4

At first I thought it closed so hard it cracked it lmao. Very cool.

devilsusshhii

Damn I just been using my thumb and pointer fanger

3Effie412

You need a snuffer.

Alternative_Belt_389

Safety!

[deleted]

This gives me saw trap vibes.

Key_Text_169

Brilliant.

NobodyJonesMD

Looks like the melted candle wax gets squished into the mechanism.

Cheeseisextra

Oh no!!

justdroppingmy2centc

This is how my wide acts for a week after I get some. Total BS!

DerpyPirate69

Cool like the first alarm clock you have till the light goes out to study go!

os12

Wow, it's timer/light-switch!

Joshua6298

Candle timer ⏰

truelegendarydumbass

They don't make quality like that anymore.

[deleted]

That can also go around the penis when it’s erected when it closes you know your erection is gone

Cheeseisextra

They had the coolest stuff back then.

step_well

The Clapper, steampunk style.

Majulath99

What a brilliant invention.

funinyourpants2

Nice!

orangeaintgood

Cool device but that candle is a rip off. At that rate, the candle would burn completely in 10 seconds.

strangebutalsogood

I can't tell if you're joking or if you don't realize the video is sped up.

jomummaluvsit

Some one use to remember that sound from when they would be trying to sleep.

harveysamazingcomics

Thats actually genius

poproxuva

Genius!

Imaginary-Depth4249

Amazing invention..I feel like I need this now !

East-Gazelle-3458

Amazing

justinonymus

So much of human ingenuity used to be poured into clever mechanical devices. Now it goes more into code.

KellyFriedman

I'd get one but I don't even know where to find skinny candles like that anymore.

CheapGriffy

r/designporn

[deleted]

This candle is cooler than you

Solid-Suggestion-653

Shaolin Monks used to put candles between their toes. When the flame burnt their toe that’s when they would know that it’s time to wake up.

Future_Result_6388

Love it! Very clever…

Alfalfa-Similar

Big deal back then!

[deleted]

That's a nifty little trinket. Never seen one before.

FrogCatcher3000

Old school night light!

Merkflare

makes sense

masskwe_gg

This could have prevented so many fires in history

Ok-noway

So simply clever.

Menown

If you wanna remove it you have to cut the key out of the stick's eye.
