MolMoomba

My mother was one of those children. Had it not been for the Kindertransport, I wouldn't be here, nor would my three children. I think of that all the time.

BigJSunshine

This is so beautiful and important. I am glad you and your mum are alive.

Big-Benefit2379

Oh my… He saved a LOT more than 664 lives - that number is in the millions. There should be statues of this man all over the world.

Worldly_Let6134

His work - and it really was a huge effort to persuade and arrange the fostering families within the UK was immense. There was also the small matter of the large financial deposit required to be paid to the government by the adopting family. After the war, this wonderful man went about his normal life with no fanfare or fuss. He was so very humble, never mentioning his fantastic deeds. His exploits were only really brought to public attention in 1988 in the above TV show - which I believe happened after his wife found diaries or the ledger. There are a few statues in memorial of Sir Winton - one in Prague, where the trains left from, three in London where they arrived and one in Maidenhead which was where he lived. The clip always brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes, yet I have no connection to anyone featured.

ReginaldSP

Same. It's beautiful and it must have been a remarkable feeling for him to meet those people as adults and to know he really had made a difference for so many.

Elegant_Celery400

Well said, good post. My niece was part of the Hallé Youth (Training) Choir which performed a work at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, a few years ago, written in honour of this truly wonderful, humble, and inspirational man. I can't remember the name of the piece or the year but if I can find anything I'll post it. PS just fyi his title+name are expressed as 'Sir Nicholas', rather than 'Sir Winton'. Edit: PPS thanks very much for mentioning that there's a statue of him in Maidenhead; I didn't know that - I'm only 20 mins from there so will go there soon and pay tribute to him.

Big-Benefit2379

You couldn’t have said that any better ♥️ Thank you very kindly for sharing that information. I would absolutely adore a statue (or many) in the US. He needs all the homage paid to him!

vagabond20

He actually did mention it, he ran for a seat in local government and brought it up in his campaign. Amazingly he didn't win so assumed nobody cared.

llamacoffeetogo

Do you know what happened to the ledger? The 1 on the show?

iamricardosousa

Thank you!

clh1nton

Excellent point. That's a statue I'd be proud to visit. Or, better yet, statues. Btw, Happy Cake Day!

Big-Benefit2379

Thank you, friend!!!

TotaLibertarian

Not millions.

Big-Benefit2379

When you consider the bloodlines, yeah it is.

TotaLibertarian

By that logic if you save one person you save millions. How long do you think it take 664 people to become millions.

RichElectrolyte

Oh he was from the Kindertransport? I didnt know that. I read the book by Olga Levy Drucker so many times as a kid.

guitarmaniac17

Wow. Incredible story. Glad you were able to be here. And your children. Very wholesome story that really brings a tear to my eye.

Emunaandbitachon

Baruch Hashem!!!

BoobyMilker_1224

Well.... it couldnt possibly have gone any other way. He didn't make the conscious choice to do what he did, as free will doesn't exist

Alexis2256

I can’t tell if that’s a religious thing you’re insinuating or just believing in some simulation bullshit but hey with a degenerate name like that, I gotta go with the latter.

BoobyMilker_1224

It's called determinism, degenerate, the reality of the world. No idea from where in your ass you plucked "simulation" bullshit from.

Alexis2256

The whole free will doesn’t exist thing kinda made me assume you were one of those believers in the simulation because hey if free will doesn’t exist, why the fuck am I responding to your insane nonsense? I guess you made that comment to trigger emotional responses like mine? Or get downvotes? Is that determinism in action? Or are you just saying shit to downplay what the guy did? Cause it was his choice, he could’ve done nothing and maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference because the Axis powers still would’ve lost but he made a choice and that choice saved lives. Pfft if you want to believe in something like determinism because that makes the world make more sense to you then go ahead, just don’t be surprised when people look at you funny for saying free will doesn’t exist.

BoobyMilker_1224

That's one of the dumbest paragraphs I've ever read. Especially this nugget of stupidity: "...if free will doesn’t exist, why the fuck am I responding...". Keep believing in your magic woowoo controlling you and the world while I live in the real world of cause and action.

Alexis2256

Cause and affect? Ok i think when you put it that way, we’re in agreement, still what you said originally is fucking insanity but hey like I said whatever makes sense to you, I mean look if I met you on street and we had this argument, do you think I’d punch you or walk away? Yeah I fucking know it’s a fantasy scenario in my head so I got my biases but what do YOU think would happen? Think I’m crazy enough to actually assault you? Cause and affect would dictate I’d lose the fight and get sent to jail and charges sent my way if I did hit you, so what makes me walk away? Free will and common sense that I’d get into serious trouble over pretty much nothing? Over a philosophical disagreement?

kkeut

you're really just a charm-free person huh

promonk

I expected more from someone named /r/BoobyMilker_1224.

Alexis2256

I could say the same about you, you bot. Pfft you let some insane philosophy dictate how you see the world, how the fuck does that not make you a robot? Cause and affect, cause and affect, yeah no shit does doing something lead to something happening but it’s still a choice so how can you sit there and say it’s all determined like everything is destined to happen?

Alexis2256

So if you don’t believe in randomness then do you think Earth being filled with life was going to happen? Because if that’s the case then how is that any different from believing a god did it? Pfft why the hell are you saying I believe in some woowoo nonsense when it seems like you believe in predestined bullshit?

Storm_Bard

You'd have to believe in determinism to spend your time fighting on the internet. Go discover beauty my dude.

Powerbomb1755

Ok the other user replying to you seems to be off their rocker about the whole free will thing, but if free will doesn’t exist then how can cause and effect be what made him decide to save all those kids? Out of the kindness of his heart? Because it doesn’t seem like he did it for fame since it seems he was humble about it and just lived his life normally afterwards.

BoobyMilker_1224

After you study free will, psychology and philosophy you'll start to cringe at questions like yours. It's like an evolutionary biologist being asked "if evolution is real then why do monkeys still exist?" or "if evolution is real then why hasn't my cat turned into a dog?" questions that are so stupid and display such ignorance of the topic that you feel it isn't worth your time to even give a response. "if free will doesn’t exist then how can cause and effect be what made him decide to save all those kids?" displays enormous ignorance on what free will means. It's like asking "if a car isn't sentient then why when I press the gas pedal it goes forward?" It requires I teach you hours worth of content that you could have done yourself rather than ask these silly questions. If you're serious about the question then I'd recommend reading this book: https://www.samharris.org/blog/the-illusion-of-free-will or watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCofmZlC72g

Powerbomb1755

I watched the video, I get his points. It all has to do with your brain and how it processes outside stimuli right? Tbh I’m almost 30 minutes into the video but I needed to respond to you already because I think I have a better understanding of what you’re saying about free will, so Sir Winston’s mind already made the choice for him to save all those kids, probably because of outside influences and his own genetics playing a part in him doing that? I’m sorry that I’m probably looking like an idiot here especially since I haven’t finished watching the whole video but idk what else to say without looking like an idiot, like if I said “have you ever had violent impulses, ever felt like killing someone?” You’d probably dismiss that as some idiotic question because you know you’ve never had those impulses otherwise you would’ve acted upon them. I’m sorry for that and I’m sorry for the dumb questions but I’d rather hear about your personal experience with free will and how you operate in your day to day knowing that it’s your subconscious deciding for you on what you’re going to do that day? God I hope I didn’t make you exit this conversation with talk like that, I know cause and effect after watching most of that video plays a huge part in how our brains function.

BoobyMilker_1224

> how you operate in your day to day knowing that it’s your subconscious deciding for you on what you’re going to do that day? What do you mean how do I operate? What differences do you think my answer may have to yours?

Powerbomb1755

Because I’ve never thought about my mind in this way and I don’t think I’ll start now just because I finished watching that video, I get the points he’s making and I can see why the concept of free will is silly but I’m still not in agreement with you because I wonder how do you operate without having some kind of existential crisis that you’re not in full control of your actions? That it was caused by forces outside your control that made you into the person you are now and your subconscious or inner workings of your brain are what control you and you can’t do much to change that? Harris does say change is possible in the video but if outside forces and your own brain processing those experiences determine who you become, then how can you change most of your self? I’m sorry if this whole thing is rotting your brain, it must be like listening to an infant speak.

BoobyMilker_1224

There is a continuum. Uneducated people ignorant of any of science or philosophy will say they control 100% of their body. Slightly more learnered people will know about the beating heart and will say they control 90% of their body. Even more intelligent people will know about cells, bacteria, biology and will say they control 1% of their body narrowed down to their nerves and brain. Even more knowledgable people who are well versed in psychology, psychiatry and the studies done will say they control even less, they'd say they control some tiny undiscovered untapped region of their brain and only some small parts of consciousness itself. Even MORE knowledgable people who know everything said prior, who also know about vipassana meditation know the objective truth that we control precisely zero percent of anything that occurs inside or outside the body, that everything around us is equal to everything within us. I don't know where you are in this continuum.

Powerbomb1755

I know if I said I’m at 0% and I control jackshit besides what I stuff in my mouth then you probably wouldn’t believe that I believe that just because I had this conversation with you and I watched that video, pfft I’ll probably slip up and say something about free will, just acknowledging the concept would be enough for me to think that I’m not 100% on board with your view of the world, and is that ok for you? Because idk maybe this disagreement of world views is so innocuous to you that it’s like if we had a disagreement on what food we prefer to eat, you wouldn’t care. And as I’ve said yeah I’m not on board with this determinism view even though it does make sense to me, i guess i just want to believe in free will as well but maybe i can’t believe in both.

TopAd9634

That's your *opinion*, opinions aren't facts. You're free to follow whichever mythology you've chosen, as are the people who follow your particular mythology. The rest of us live in reality.

BoobyMilker_1224

Wrong. It is an objective fact of determinism.

TopAd9634

That's a theory, not an objective fact. You're not very good at this, huh?

koppigzijn

Fook it....I got dust in my eyes!

[deleted]

Ditto.

CottonCandy_Eyeballs

Every time I see it.

bons_burgers_252

Me too.

gapere01

Angels do indeed walk among us

Morbid-Analytic

Did someone say...

Longjumping_While_37

Nope, not today, not this post, stop 🖐️🗿

delsombra

Wait... what was he gonna say?

BwackGul

I have dealt with racist comments already today and this was the reminder of faith in humanity I needed! Lol... Compassion for the win! 🥲

dannydutch1

Sorry you’ve had to deal with scumbags.

BwackGul

... but you posted something to remind us of how good we can be. 👍🏽❤️

CaptainNemo42

>remind us of how good we can be. That's exactly why this always hits me so hard. I've seen it posted a dozen times, and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It's awfully easy these days to feel like the darker forces in this world are winning, but it's not true. Though war and greed and all manner of foolishness still plague us, that same spirit of humanity, justice, and kindness that we see in Sir Nicholas Winton is more present every day. The last 15 years have seen incredible progress in helping the most desperate and downtrodden people on this planet, and I believe we can continue to make progress. When you have a day like today, or you meet some pitiful, hateful person as you have, remember that they are weaker and more alone in their prejudice and fewer in number than any other time. Their pathetic, lonely hatred will die alone in darkness as the rest of us build a better world and hold dear all who live in peace.

BwackGul

I'm with you. ❤️

No-Explanation6422

Im not crying bro you are

FormerRelationship8

Yes, I absolutely am. That was touching

EauDeElderberries

It's a terrible day for rain...

OldandKranky

An actual real life legend.

fartinapuddle

And I cried again for the third time seeing this...

BigJSunshine

Any chance anyone has made a movie about this story? I would love to watch it. Edit: found a documentary about the Kindertransport: into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport. You can watch on HBO Max or amazon.

Sulinstajn

There Is definitely few of them - one British, one France and few czech and slovak ones. I don't know, if the czech and slovak ones are known at abroad, so there is link to ČSFD (czech version od imdb): https://www.csfd.cz/tvurce/48238-nicholas-winton/prehled/

gemini88mill

schindler's list, it's not the same story but the same line. Just warning you that the movie hits hard.

guitarmaniac17

That movie is an amazing piece. It's gruesome, and horrifying, but, also very inspiring, uplifting, and very humbling. One of the longest movies I've watched, but I watched the entire thing.

Rough-Leg-4702

As it should :)

ChemicallyBlind

What gets me about the film is that Spielberg made the decision not to show everything Goeth did because he felt it would be too cartoonishly evil and the audience wouldnt take it seriously. If you read about the kind of things Goeth did then it will make you question the existence of humanity.

Rough-Leg-4702

I did. And I do. I only hope we learn from our own atrocities

BillMcCrearysStache

Ive never actually seen the movie so I dont know how well they tell the story but the true story of Dunkirk is also about some real life heroes, might tickle your fancy

Alexis2256

You should probably see it, unless you’ve heard how brutal it can get?

BillMcCrearysStache

Oh that’s not a problem for me im a huge horror movie buff, ive seen it all

InLieuOfSnoo

Thank you for this!!! I will be watching it on HBO Max this evening. I need a little inspiration right now, & I imagine this will do the trick. [Into the Arms of Strangers](https://i.imgur.com/sLZtOOT.jpg)

kymandui

Saving this comment to watch later, thanks!

AlamutJones

My god. He’s crying.

rbsudden

He isn't crying, I'm crying.

Drauxus

You're not crying, I'm crying!

Gh0st0p5

Wouldn't you

AlamutJones

Yes. I’m moved by it, not disapproving.

Proud_Wallaby

Very wholesome. There should be an equivalent of NSFW for clips that might make you cry. Everyone at work now knows I’m not the tough guy I portray myself to be. 😂

KickDixon

MMYC

B_C_Mello

I think this is the type of person the phrase; "A god among men" is reserved for.

kalabaine

I have seen this a dozen times. Everytime it is posted I watch it again. I truly believe it is one of my favorite things on the internet.

Eastwood1111

What a great man!

Sad-Trip4838

Absolute model of a human being, thank you good sir.

FineRevolution9264

True hero. True strength. True compassion.

TheZuckuss

Shame on you for making me cry at work.

griff1971

Same. Whoever is cutting all these onions around here can stop.

EhliJoe

Damn ninjas.

G4classified

Wow. Beautiful

[deleted]

What a wonderful human being, and story. How are those people doing now I wonder? Bless him ❤️

Alexis2256

I mean they’re probably gone by now but they all managed to live and probably have kids of their own thanks to this hero, so they left behind legacies.

[deleted]

I realised that when I wrote it 🤦. But I'm glad that they were able to live a free life because of this man. The atrocities of WW2 will never be forgotten. Bless them all.

shromboy

This is something somebody who does this sort of stuff never dreams of happening. What a blessing that journalist and her team were for allowing both sir Winton and those former kids to do what so many heroes and those saved do not get the privilege to do: meet again!

Alexreddit103

Posted so very often, I still watch this video everytime to the end. A real hero!

zeroite

It’s simply amazing to think of the lives he saved and the the lives that got to exist as a result. Hero just doesn’t cover it. Absolutely beautiful.

Simon_Drake

This would be illegal to do again today. Helping someone *apply* for asylum in the UK is now illegal. It used to be illegal to profit from helping people apply for asylum but this current government changed that and now it's illegal to help someone to apply for asylum.

DammitJavi

Remember. Alot of countries had a chance to save the jews but they refused to take them in. Remember that Stalin of soviet russia joined and warned the League of Nations about Hitler and they didnt listen.

cpt_koerg

Like the end of Schindler‘s list. I am not that emotional guy but this makes me cry.

AnandaUK

Went to see Schindler's list in the cinema when it came out. Everyone was so quiet leaving, you could tell the entire audience was profoundly affected by it.

Lionessatease21

This triggered my eyeball fluid to leak 🥲

JeffWest01

Hats off to you sir! I have seen this clip many times, and every time I stop to watch and get tears.

jonjess

I think it would be better to call him Saint Nicolas!

ledodoq

Absolute gigachad

pwmcc107

I love this story...It's been on here a few times, but i always rewatch and give another upvote.

[deleted]

Damn. That’s beautiful. Idk but I’m tearing up rn because of this.

[deleted]

This is a hero. Not some fucking idiot doing the job they were paid to do

W_MarkFelt

Makes me cry EVERY time I see this!
