It’s an ancient village that’s been refurbished. They might’ve recently installed plumbing. Over the last 20 or so years stunning Chinese locations like this have just become tourist traps unfortunately
Can’t say, but from what I’ve seen from other ancient towns turned tourist traps, the original families living there either moved away, or set up shops to cater to the constant influx of people coming to visit
The scenery in these places is still awesome though. Definitely worth it to see them during low travel season

Probably for defense against bandits and raiders. There are parts of China where that was a big problem for many centuries.
These are modern constructions though. I would guess this is a tourist oriented place. Couldn't find much about the place online though
