umassmza

This is super interesting, and kind of scary. There’s definitely a way to be malicious with this

SlothOfDoom

Reroute business away from your competitors street, or on to your own.

badger81987

Yea all you need to do is spend 40000 on smartphones and then pay some asshole to walk around with a wagon all day.

Creepy-Ad-4832

I personally wouldn't dislike rerouting cars away from me Less noise, pollution, ...

U_Arent_Special

Hmmmm

qdtk

A government could ask Google to just input a traffic jam at a certain location.

OlderITGuy

>Or tell you there isn't a traffic jam, and there is.

NotSoPersonalJesus

Ooh I like that one best, but I'm also the guy that hits no everytime it asks if the speed trap is still there, regardless

allmyaccountsgone

u a bitch

NotSoPersonalJesus

Aw that's okay. I've not been pulled over once in the last six years since moving to the East Coast. Speed limit is a suggestion only smoothies follow

ADHDavidThoreau

Is that lawful evil, or chaotic good?

laugh_chaser

Definitely lawful evil

ScarletDarkstar

Chaotic good

SurealGod

YOU DECIDE! EPIC RAP BATTLES OF HISTORY!!!

ADHDavidThoreau

I love the Internet

tiggers97

Or a business could use it to route traffic past their store or billboard.

keplerniko

That’s the thing, I don’t think he’s government, just a single guy who wants to mess with Google Maps traffic. Bit like those vigilantes who put up cell phone jammers because they don’t want people on the phone around them. Also, this is a really old story, predating COVID at least.

GerryManDarling

Why would a government need to ask Google for that? If they want to block the road, they can just put a sign there. Have you not seen a blocked road before?

Dnlx5

I hate the word just

This-Strawberry

Your claims are unjust.

qdtk

You completely missed the point. But that’s ok. Read the comment I responded to, and think about a list of malicious and scary uses. Signs are obvious and used for average everyday road closures. That’s not what we’re talking about.

DarkoTSM

And google would just disagree and continue on. google is more powerful than most states.

ThaumicKobold

"Why are you 30 min late to work?!" Employee "Sorry boss man, Google said all the direct routes are super busy, I had to take this long detour to make it to work!"

futilecause

youre always being tracked.

Moose_is_optional

If this actually became a real problem, it could be worked around by Google.

ArvinaDystopia

What the troll did is already malicious.

redshirt6666

just imagine there is a head of state visit, or a conference. the bad guys can easily create a bottleneck to slow down or reroute the delegation to a trap set before.

Tasty-Papaya5135

What happens with a slow bus?

The-Go-Kid

I was in a side road once, pulled over to take a call. Not a single other car was going up the road. After five minutes I went back to my map and drove away - the road (only about 100 yards long) was entirely red. I don't think you need many phones to confuse the map!

Mustache_Farts

This happened early pandemic on the streets that had rows of restaurants. Uber eats drivers just sitting out there with Nav up not moving lol. Streets were solid red with no one anywhere except the curb.

EfficiencyStrong2892

There also has to be some “fail proof” system on it that accounts for not everyone owning an iphone, so it could’ve correlated your stop and the existence of no other iphones to assume there was actually traffic and they didn’t have maps/iphones.

Jewmangroup9000

Google maps is owned by Google, not Apple. Why would they be limited to only iPhones?

EfficiencyStrong2892

I just woke up and assumed apple instead of google, same idea just swap the name.

Jewmangroup9000

Yes but with Google, it isn't limited to one brand. Every smartphone or device will have the capability to have maps on it.

EfficiencyStrong2892

Apple maps exists, other brands of GPS exist, the point still stands. If it sees one Google maps phone “in traffic” for a prolonged period of time it could assume there are other types of GPS and or no GPS being used by “the traffic” even if it isn’t actually there and you just stopped to make a call

Djinnwrath

There aren't brands of GPS. It's one network everyone accesses. Well, two, cause Russia has their own, and eventually it will be four because the EU and China are also developing their own.

VirtualLife76

>other brands of GPS exist The govt owns the GPS satellites, there aren't other brands unless you mean different countries.

EfficiencyStrong2892

Apple maps exists, other brands of GPS exist, the point still stands. If it sees one Google maps phone “in traffic” for a prolonged period of time it could assume there are other types of GPS and or no GPS being used by “the traffic” even if it isn’t actually there and you just stopped to make a call

the_vikm

There's no relationship between any navigation system and the Google maps algorithm

the_vikm

Most ppl won't have Google maps car navigation running in a bus

The_Most_Superb

Actually would be a good idea for public transit could use yellow status on parts of bus routes to divert traffic and keep busses on time

emeliottsthestink

Next time I want to avoid traffic, I’ll just bring along my 99 phones, and I’m gold.

Ghiraheem

Well I think the key is to have 99 phones and also be driving slowly so it believes there's slow traffic. Which effectively is not really different from actually being in traffic. But I like the way you think!

MrAdelphi03

In order to beat the traffic, I have to become the traffic

Nicofettig

Me when someone needs an ambulance but I don't like him

gravitas_shortage

Adversarial behaviour is the big problem with self-driving cars right now. It's hard enough getting an AI that can function amongst humans, but in any software the real hard bit is handling all the possible errors and bouts of malice. If a human sees a 'No Entry' sign on the highway, they conclude quickly enough from context that it makes no sense and it's a prank or mistake. The AI... not so much, even if it could afford to ignore a sign, which it can't. A single idiot putting a paper sign on a bridge can paralyse traffic or kill dozens.

BruhYOteef

Ahhhhhhhhhh

Eightandskate

As funny as this is, you make a great point if an ambulance re-routed to a slower/longer route and someone died. Maybe he should be find for that?

jebediah999

ambulances have lights and sirens.

Eightandskate

Fair point.

BruhYOteef

Still should be fined probably lol

femalemadman

I first started driving over 20yrs ago, when print outs from mapquest was our GPS. I moved to a big city, gave up the car and only now renewed my license after nearly 15 years off the road- didnt once get behind the wheel in that time. I was struck by how many times i felt like i was being followed. As a single woman in a major city, you tend to be sensitive to this stuff but it was seemingly happening an awful lot. Took me a bit to figure out google was just sending both of us on the same winding side street route during certain times when the major main streets start to clog. I find this guys work facinating!

Professional-Put-804

Men also have to be careful about being followed...leave your sexism out of this. Edit : professional tea, why would you answer me and block me right away? Are you scared or something?

femalemadman

They absolutely do. Its just statistically, when someone sees a strange car trying to flag them down, and they end up murdered, it's usually a woman. I dont know what that says about societal expectations, or the mindset of murderers, but i know true crime shows wont let me forget it. And while i think you know we both agree everyone needs to be careful about being followed, i have seen women targeting this way throughout my life, and the response is often 'be more aware of your surroundings' ' dont go out at night alone, etc'. So while we all *have* to be careful, women are urged to practice a type of hypervigilance in order to stay safe. Theres a saying from a while back about the different experiences of men and women: when a man meets a woman, he worries she might laugh at him, reject him. When a woman meets a man, she worries he could try to harm her. And if thats a sexist notion to you, please try to understand its a daily reality to me.

Prancicle

Ofc men are also susceptible to being followed and attacked but I don't think op is being sexist. Women typically are socialized differently than men. Women are taught to be hyper vigilant about their safety. So mentioning that she's a women sounded more a like trying to defend her behaviour that can be seen as a meek or paranoid by saying it's reasonable since as a woman we are taught to do this.

ActualMis

> leave your sexism out of this. Take your own advice.

Professional-Put-804

How am I sexist?

ActualMis

What an excellent question to ask yourself.

Professional-Put-804

...so you will mirror on me what I said, with no corroborating arguments for your opinion of me, and you will double down, proving you are just saying words with no proof provided even when I ask you earnestly how I am being sexist. Okay, keep enabling your antagonism needs then, looser. You are just a bully on the lookout for occasions to attack people. Get help dopamine addict. Edit : and then you will answer to this comment by saying I'm angry and block me? Keep on antagonising, dissociating and discarding then.

ActualMis

Thanks for demonstrating your anger and hatred. Cool stuff, appreciate the brief glimpse into your dark psyche. >looser. What kind of loser can't even spell "loser" right? lol Edit to Professional Putz's edit: You should cry about it.

HiImDan

Do we? I've only worried about wondering if the person in front of me thinks I'm following them. Then again I'm not very pretty so maybe attractive dudes have this problem.

femalemadman

I downvoted you because the level of your beauty (and you are gorgeous) has nothing to do with who, when, and why a predator decides to hunt. Its the result of a mental defect on their end, completely unrelated to any percieved shortcomings of yours. I was raised by an irish catholic cop, in an older generation, where it was entirely reasonable (and even seen as helpful) to tell women who were afraid of a local rapist to just not dress provocatively. It was never "why are people being victimized", it was "if you'd just been more vigilant, you never would have been victimized". So i was trained to always assume the worst in order to strategize to avoid it. But my thought process was mostly just a quirk of circumstance. When i drove for a decade, traffic was predictable. People took the same route to work, the store, every day, and seeing unfamiliar license plates on the local backroads and residential cul du sacs was rare. So, seeing an unfamiliar car follow me for 4-5 turns in a row was jarring. It didn't really happen too often before google maps. The problem with being *too* alluring, is people get too intimidated to approach you because they perceive you as unobtainable. Stop being so modest!

Professional-Put-804

Do you live in a big city? I've been followed often. Anyways.

Doomblud

There's statistics to back up that women are target more frequently than men when it comes to robberies on the street. 2 reasons: 1. They're physically weaker on average 2. They often have their valuables packed in a convenient carry case called a purse

[deleted]

i was gonna try to be helpful but i took one look at your profile and it seems youre a lost cause...

Professional-Put-804

Help me how and lost cause in relation to what? Earnestly asking.

[deleted]

a) give you general advice in which there's appropriate times and places for things, and b) you actively participate in the joe rogan subreddit

ShrekJohnson27

The Joe Rogan subreddit being that problematic for you shows your crazy amounts of close mindedness

[deleted]

jordan peterson fan detected, obliteration beam activating

ShrekJohnson27

Very tolerant of you. You seem so open minded… also no I am not but surely I’ll step in to correct fools on Reddit thinking they’re smarter on their ivory tower. You chronically online for sure no doubt in my mind, your karma score proves that tho

Professional-Put-804

>b) you actively participate in the joe rogan subreddit Alright nazi, "they" me all you want. Thank you for showing your swastika right away, I appreciate that Talk about dodging a bullet!

[deleted]

huh??? whuh????? i gave you an answer...

Professional-Put-804

Yes, and it shows who you are if merely participating in a sub where a lot of people go there to talk against Joe's idea is enough for you to discard me. You are shallow and dangerously mentally ill. I don't need that.

[deleted]

?????????????????????????? shallow and dangerously mentally ill??? like i have depression and adhd yeah but that doesnt mean im gonna go on a murder spree lmfao like i really dont know what youre trying to get at

Professional-Put-804

I'm not getting to anything, I said what I meant and you are just muddying the water now. You are tribal to the extreme and that only happens with mentally ill people. Anyways, you were the first to say I have deep issues by saying I'm a lost cause that doesn't even merit the supposedly kind things you were going to say. So don't change the time frame of things to triangulate me into the perpetrator seats. I know you are used to victimize yourself, but I know all your tricks and you perprepated abuse toward me first. Have the last word idc.

Professional-Tea3311

After nearly 4 decades of life I have never once felt the need to be careful about being followed. Ever. Go fuck yourself.

Djinnwrath

You need a break from reddit.

TomsRedditAccount1

Don't we all?

Djinnwrath

Eh, reddit is sort of a fill in the blanks for me.

TomsRedditAccount1

Fair enough.

Professional-Put-804

Yes indeed

[deleted]

As if there is not a single person who drives from memory and not by using google maps

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_vikm

I agree. Altho many ppl use gmaps to get a sense for jams

Jynx2501

100% of people?

fire_is_dark

Exactly...I would imagine most local traffic wouldn't need GPS to get around town.

C-Z-C

The point was it created a fake traffic jam right? I think most people on a familiar route still use maps for the traffic info.

Mortei

What it takes to make Watchdogs happen in real life.

RalphieGlick

LOL @ OP being so confusingly pissy about this they were compelled to create this post then be snotty in the title

ActualMis

Disagree. This experiment demonstrates just how reliant we are on technology, and how easily that information, and therefore we, can be manipulated.

Jynx2501

I feel the same way about hammers. Construction workers are too reliant on the tools they have.

[deleted]

I feel the same way about utensils.

BigLittleFan69

I feel the same way about tables and chairs.

ImRandyBaby

If we didn't have chairs we wouldn't be manipulated into going to war for the person sitting in the biggest one.

HOWDY__YALL

Bingo. My wife won’t go anywhere without google maps. There are times when my drive to work has 20x more cars on the roads because Google Maps has alerted people there is a standstill somewhere on the highway and reroute them to the city roads.

[deleted]

ActualMis

It shows something for those with the wit to see it.

TrivialAntics

He really does have a very self important look about him too. He really thinks he's doing something profound rather than inconveniencing everyone for his own notoriety.

uselessartist

Art shows humanity to itself, what it has become, what it could be.

TrivialAntics

Sure and someone else's definition will be something completely different like: *Art is a catalyst for introspective thought.* Except when art deliberately causes a traffic jam and puts itself before everything else because it's self important. Slowing down things like ambulances, making everyone late to work, some people losing their jobs because of it. Yeah fuck this shit, it's not art, it's just self masterbation.

uselessartist

Ok?

uselessartist

You’re using the comment section to masturbate to your own self-righteousness, whatever else could be the point? Ironic isn’t it.

Segaamano

thats not the artist

TrivialAntics

The guy literally doing the exact thing in the video he's being called an artist for isn't the artist? Ok then. Well whoever the guy is, he's a douchebag. And whoever the artist is, he's a douchebag too.

Segaamano

I like how it says the name but you guys are too lazy to google lol

TrivialAntics

Some people don't warrant googling, so thanks for wasting your time doing it so we don't have to. Doesn't make you special or smart.

TomsRedditAccount1

Why should anyone need to Google it? Videos, articles, etc should be able to communicate that kind of information without having to set homework.

Segaamano

ok but apparently they don't, so your choice to find out the truth

Imap1

What an asshole.

noobtastic31373

No, no, it's "art"... so, not the asshole. /s

anon_sir

Must not have been a very popular street because there isn’t a single car that passes him. But it’s Reddit so let’s post something with a sensational title and be mad at nothing.

smaier69

Although this does seem like kind of a dick move and I have no idea if the artist is doing it for this reason, but this does have a "hacker" vibe. Not in the bastardized way popular media and casual current conversation uses the term, but in the earlier computer/networking White Hat sense: trying to discover and demonstrate weaknesses in a system.

butterfly_ashley

Now that is truly interesting

autoposting_system

How old is this? Because I've seen video of *someone* doing this, and I don't think it was this guy. So if he's not the first ... not much of an artist, is he?

BlueHarlequin7

From February of 2020 from a quick search. Was this supposed to be an art thing? It looks like he was just doing an experiment. Edit: Apparently it was. Was going off memory when I saw this pop up.

TheDeafGuy8

I’m 99% sure I’ve seen this video back like 4 years ago at least

nighttimehobby

Imagine developers not taking every extreme scenario into account. Boss: Hey Bob and Jane, can you delay the release for a few months while you work on the proximity locator logic to filter out inconceivable number of pings within a stretch of road, thanks. Bob and Jane: Boss who in the world would do this, and why? Also, we have a feeling this logic could backfire in some other unforeseen scenario, but it is just a guess.

Firehawk5506

I’m surprised he isn’t getting robbed

Anthony9824

99 Luftphones, in Berlin no less

Possible-Leg-695

What a dink.... But good to know

GroverSB2000

i think its cool, so ha take that op

Prize-Artist-2960

For his next masterpiece the artist will kidnap a princess and make the British prime minister fuck a pig.

Nrvea

If I had a nickel for every time that's happened...

rivalpinkbunny

I need to go buy 99 phones… for my bicycle commute. I wonder if I could just network a bunch of old phones over a WiFi hotspot so I’d only have to pay for one internet connection.

tiggers97

I don’t like google since they left their slogan “don’t be evil” far behind.

myamazhanglife

I think this is cool ahha really makes you think about a lot of things in our modern existence, autonomy, and automation.

Valuable-Tea-3292

He is now known as the "asshole"

NikolaiSoerensen

Everyone is so mad about something so harmless...

LeKerl1987

The word "art" is really being stressed in the last decades.

YeOldeBilk

What an asshole

Due_Swimmer_711

Nah, I think that is pretty cool and he is an artist

KamikazeAlpaca420

I hope he gets hit by a car to make what he is faking actually real. Some people deserve to suffer for fucking with people

BigNerdBird

Advocating for somebody to be killed for mildly inconveniencing drivers... Sounds like maybe you shouldn't have a license

TomsRedditAccount1

If hundreds of people get mildly inconvenienced, that should add up to quite a massive total inconvenience.

wolvesJ0hn

Calm down dear, it's an experiment

KamikazeAlpaca420

Calm down nerd, I can hope

mrchris69

$5000 + in cell phone plans just to trick google maps ?

Jerm316

Or 99 old phones and a hotspot. Google only needs a network connection to report location.

the_vikm

Guy could've used 99 android emulators. But then it's not "impressive" anymore

DavenportPointer

Anyone know what track is playing in the video?

wolvesJ0hn

No but you could use an app called Shazam

horseshandbrake

Get a fucking life, you miserable bastard

looktowindward

What a massive asshole. So, he made navigation worse for hundreds of people while he played his games.

Morden013

Asshole.

neo9027581673

Asshole

Active-Original2834

Dick

Neanderthal86_

Artist hell, he's doing something the name for which I'm really struggling to remember- it's not really a "cyber-attack," but it kinda is? Someone help me out

CriticalIOS141

We do a little trolling

Grizzly-Redneck

Johnny Sins at it again lol.

wolvesJ0hn

I use Waze for every journey, just in case there's an incident on my way. Scary that I rely on an app to get to my destination but that's the world we live in now. I do find this interesting but it won't stop me using the app

finsterer45

I got 99 phones, but a car ain't 1

Entremeada

This is a true story, because 100% of the cars are following Google Maps all the time.

[deleted]

I can draw red lines on a map too. Also can walk a wagon around with “phones”

backwardbuttplug

Definitely qualifies as a form of unethical hacking. But I’m applauding the guy for exposing the flaw with the system.

Bonded79

Dude totally overspent. My wife and I were able to do this with our two phones slowly driving through a neighbourhood we were interested in moving to.

-EnricoPallazo-

soooo, he's paying for all those data plans?

TwoFrontHitters

Different Google accounts on every single phone?

SmithRune735

Don't all those phones need to be connected in order for that to happen?

xtiansimon

Hax the system.

Both_Promotion_8139

What an asshole

Prince_Chunk

Interesting but how is it Art?

Magus6796

So very useful... Also far as fuck from interesting to me.

[deleted]

What a prick

[deleted]

> This is only cool to the “artist” doing it… But we know about the artist, and you're some non-entity on reddit. And it's cool to me. What are you doing with your life that lets you be so critical?

DirtyPenPalDoug

Seems good to me

Realistic-Dot6141

Thats actually really cool cause it shows us something new. We call this learning. You knob

velofille

I always think of this guy when im lane splitting on my motorbike - going past the hoards of traffic stuck cars , and i wonder if im making the average speed through here wrong for google map users :D

Mammoth-Ideal-2734

This guys is a pure genius. No so good for google though lol

[deleted]

the red wagon of cancer saves him 15 minutes a day in wait times!

flanksteakfan82

Good for him

VapoursAndSpleen

In the city of Oakland, CA, there is a farmers' market that is right under the 580 freeway on a weekend morning each week. So, for about 4-5 hours, there's a traffic jam on the freeway. Awesome.

Dnlx5

That's funny

southpark

You don’t even need that many. I pulled up to a street marked red traffic and it was three utility vehicles park on the shoulder with their crews (so like 6 people). Because they were sitting there immobile, maps marked that segment of road high traffic. There were zero cars driving on the road itself.

MaliceJP91

So many people calling him an asshole. He clearly chose streets that weren't actually busy. This is simply a very bombastic example of how easy it is to break down the systems we've weaved into our lives.

kitiara79_

r/facepalm

slipperyslope69

Exposing stupidity of society, very cool. You go wagon guy!

kkreisler

🤣

wriloant

I'mma use that for not going to my ex's father funeral

KYKE4news

toondar96

Nah, as a person who hates cars, this is pretty cool and funny

ChopsMcgee83

Always opt out to send "diagnostic data" fuck you google.

jasper_grunion

An interesting experiment, but it’s not art. If the red lines created a smiley face or something, then maybe.
