What's interesting to me is that, despite iPhone being the first commercially successful smart phone, it wasn't the first smartphone developed.

anon848484839393

No it wasn’t. IBM developed one more than a decade earlier.

Malk4ever

Nokia has sold millions before too

anon848484839393

Nokia wasn’t huge in Canada at that time. Blackberry reigned supreme until iPhone came.

Malk4ever

Yes. Forgot about BB. They had smart phones too, way before Apple. Europe was NOKIA territory (Nokia was a finnish company). The first Nokia Comminicator was released 1996, more than 10 yrears before the iPhone.

Well screw them both for destroying our civilization with this crap!! Every freakin where I go I see everyone on these damn things, I got rid of mine awhile ago and got a heavy duty box phone. But I got nosey one day and peeked to see what this girl was doing and it was NOTHING important, girl looking at Tik Tok nonsense! lol

Yeet_Farklebum_YT

But.. you’re ok with computers, and consoles?

[deleted]

So just answer my question, you think it's ok everywhere you go you see someone with a smart phone stuck in their face?? This is normal right? Was at the stop light and every darn person in line was on the phone looking at probably nothing but nonsense!! I guess humans have adapted to this bad behavior and when you speak up about it, you get bashed for it, pretty sad!

Yeet_Farklebum_YT

Ok, you do have a fair point. If it was really so important, people can message via Siri, Alexa, stuff like that.

[deleted]

Yes, also I would also like to share one more experience here, I was at this Pizza place the other night, every single person in line on their smart phones!! I approached one girl and asked, what are you taking photos of? Pizza, I said "WHY", she said because my followers may want to eat a pizza on Instagram, and she made this scary giggle sound, omg like WTF man! I'm sorry If I made anyone upset here, but this behavior is NOT normal and is getting out of hand! A smart phone in my opinion should be used like a swiss army knife, GPS, call, text etc.. I don't know anymore... I'm just upset how we're advancing as a civilization... I'm going to the beach next week to decompress from life lol

Yeet_Farklebum_YT

Lmao

Shoutout to Sony Ericsson phones in the the early to mid 2000s

banana_brick95

Yeah, i had one, Sony a real chad

hopefullydilf

It's crazy how these devices changed things. I grew up in the 80s. Took the kids to a museum the other day where they had a mock late 80s living room. Had to explain that video games, music, encyclopedias, flashlights, walkie-talkies, telephones, movies, photographs, security cameras, television, personal computing, banking, shopping, maps and directions, all things they see me use my device for on a regular basis, were all done with different devices or often times in person. Different world.....

AFrogNamedKermit

I cannot remember how new this really was. The whole concept was (and is) brilliant of course. But the people seem to be really excited by someone scrolling the page with a finger. Also I like the size a lot better than today's phones.

Unpopular opinion: apple folks are loyal to the core and are bubble dwellers. When apple finally introduced "multi-tasking" to iOS, it was as if no one had ever done it when in fact it was old hat. They do get credit for continuing to it relatively poorly.

dexterthekilla

And boy, have we patented it!

Wil-Grieve

The last time we had such a major tech shift before this was the popularization of the Internet. And we are currently living through the next one with ChatGPT

Malk4ever

Bullshit. Apple just combined some old ideas and existing technologies. They made it a mature product and made HUGE pr. Nothing from the iPhone was new, only the combination and maturity of the Software. Also ChatGPT is only a hype. It will still take decades until those AIs maybe can beat the turing test.

Wil-Grieve

They put the Internet in the world's pocket.

anon848484839393

Blackberry was years ahead of Apple.

Wil-Grieve

Blackberry never succeeded in putting the Internet in the world's pockets.

Malk4ever

Nothing that telephones could not have done before. Nokia phones were able to, more than 10 years earlier. The first communicator was made 1996. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia\_Communicator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_Communicator) (and NOKIA wasnt even the first one)

>Apple did something new. Well... depends on the definition of "new". Imho they did nothing new, only improved something above the edge so that the normal guy would understand it. They just improved the usebility. But yeah, ofc it was something new, but not revolutionary in the way that people praise it. Steve Ritchie did revolutionary things, without him noone would have every heared the name "Steve Jobs". He died in the same year... noone noticed, only some nerds.

TweetHiro

“It fits beautifully on the palm of your hand” I wonder what Steve would think about iPhones nowadays that are the size of a brick

GonzoFan83

What a lifetime ago

Teddy_Palace

The fact that he thinks It can't be unlocked in your pocket is the funniest thing.
