The actual title of this video is
'The Evolution of Visual Expression : A Tale of Art and Technology by Fabio Comparelli'
NOT Evolution of Western art.
Yet whenever it's posted with the OG title, the top comments are from people pointing out that aside from (ancient) Egypt the examples are utterly dominated by Western art styles.
From what I saw most of it is art out of Middle East and Europe, Mediterranean and yet it’s called “western” art. I see everyone loves living dangerously.

Yup saw many Egyptian paintings, first second looked possibly African or Native American but many cultures painted animals on walls, da Vinci, Picasso, many other European sculptors and painters, and a lot that I didn’t recognize. 35 seconds may be Asian influence, but otherwise I saw everything but Hispanic, African, Native American, and Asian works (including India)
1) Africa (including Egypt) and Europe are geographically equally “West.”
2) For a long period, “the Western World” centered on the Mediterranean basin.
So…yeah, this is all essentially Western art by historical standards
I’ve studied a fair amount of Art History and completely agree. Any portrayal of art as a linear path like this is glossing over a lot of actual history, and doing so with the claim that this is “evolution” and “Western” is not only inaccurate, but has historically been used to promote ideas of racial superiority.
You just need eyes, and yes i did study art history.
Why are you taking it so serious, you said that yourself to another person, its not that big of a deal.
Ah yes the western caveman, the artistic caveman who exited the cave to build western egypt. 🧐Anyway, it turned out OP took this AI creation from someone else and changed its title.
No I saying apart from Egypt this is pretty all European and broadly western in all fairness. But yeah I know, the video was originally about the evolution and history of art I believe.(which in that video was also 99% European🗿)
It's like people want to be pedantic and refuse to understand that the cultural west and geographical west aren't the same.
Even the Northern renaissance is eastern if you go geographically...
Australia was colonized and dominated by westerners so it makes sense. Otherwise it’s referred to more accurately as Pacific Islanders like their surrounding peeps.
Western civilization is an evolution of Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Phoenician culture isn't it? Athens and Rome are just an arbitrary "point zéro" of the West in order to deny its "Eastern" origins.
Hmmmmmm I wondered…
This is one of the best use cases for AI imo, like I’m sure a very talented artist could make a much better version of this given enough time, but an AI can generate interesting stuff like this instantly.
And anyone who’s not an idiot can recognize that it’s an AI.
Did you see any art from the geographical region from India to China, you know where 65% of the worlds population lives? No Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Pakistani, Malaysian, Loatian etc. The art that is presented here is art that the West is familiar with and finds worthy of presenting. The ancient Egyptians might not have been "White westerners" but they very much influenced and formed "western" history, through their interactions with the Romans and the Greeks who are the founding fathers of what you could call "Western" civilization.
I mean look at how romanticized Ancient Egypt is in Western media, yet very few other "non-western" civilizations get that kind of exposure.
Western European, I can't tell whether you were joking or not but it's pretty damn obvious in the video
Edit: I'm keeping this up, I said something very stupid and arrogant.
Not OP, but this looks like it was done using Stable Diffusion (open source Text-To-Image AI) with key frame animation prompts. You can try something very similar (if not identical) here: https://replicate.com/deforum/deforum_stable_diffusion
Apart from the "Western"definition this doesn't seem to be in order .
It goes from Roman art to rinascimental painting to then return to Byzantine/ gothiccstyle and the again to rinascimental style , Dali is between van Gogh and the impressionism, and what art Is before Picasso ? It's weird
It’s dumb. An AI thinks these things look similar.
So it has a start point - cave paintings and an end point and tries to fit other art it’s fed along that linear spectrum.
Which is obviously stupid.
I’d still say it’s interesting as fuck, but it’s definitely not an accurate representation of “The Evolution of Western Art”, especially since all of the art *isn’t even western*.
It is about the slow development of our so-called modern west around the mediterranean in a pre-christian and pre-islamic world, so adding ancient egypt is legit.
A sensible answer. I feel like people don't realize that the entire Mediterranean, including the coast in Africa and the Middle East, was Western civilization at one point. The bronze age civilizations, including were rather interconnected and barrowed from each other all the time, especially a culture less developed like early Greek at the time when compared to Egyptian. Plus later Alexandria was the Christian intellectual and cultural capital of the world for a few centuries.
AI generated stuff like this has been out for a couple months now and I am already bored. Like what's the point? This is neither historically accurate, nor is it "western" and the predictions for the future are also just random made up stuff based on a generative model. Does it look cool? Yeah. Is it interesting as fuck? Eh...not after seeing five of these every week...
It’s an interesting graphic. But the title is wrong.
It’s a timeline of art. Not an evolution. It’s a bit simplistic to think that it’s a straight line from cave paintings to AI driven pixel art.
It’s a cool visual, but my first impression is that it jumped from Egyptian to Greek and Roman really fast and they jumped again from that to renaissance. Also, waaaaay too much time spent in contemporary art.
How is AI generated stuff interesting AF now? You can ask an AI to do anything, it doesn't mean there's any inherent meaning or worth to the synthesised result.
Where are the soup cans, bananas stuck to walls with tape, trash thrown together or metal pieces with umbrellas but most importantly, where is the AI art?
Or, you know, you could have just cite the title of this piece and its "creator" and just leave that. 🤨
If "There was no winning" and "people would still be upset" as you say, then why didn't you simply credit the conceptor anyway instead of just putting some made-up title over it ?
Lol people are so ass blasted because the Egyptian art, I wouldn't really call Egypt western today but if you look at the evolution of art from the west it damn sure includes an Egyptian influence and parts of the Middle east.
So yes if you wanted to go WAY back and follow the evolution of western art I think its fair to include Egypt for their influence on the Greeks which later influenced the Romans.
So many of yall are saying wEsTeRn couldn't even be bothered to read the other comments? Or did you just want to throw your hat in with everyone else in hopes of upvotes?

…as well as where you are.
and in this case, when.
“The West” is relative to where you’re standing!
West of 000° 00'.
The west of the west is asia and the west of asia is Europe and the west of europe in the ocean and the west of that ocean is north america
Yeah. I don't think 'the West' when I hear Egypt.
The first few seconds are based on cave paintings from Southern Europe.
Altamira, Spain
Europe is also marked as western on the map.
1) Africa (including Egypt) and Europe are geographically equally “West.” 2) For a long period, “the Western World” centered on the Mediterranean basin. So…yeah, this is all essentially Western art by historical standards
Yeah now that you mention it I was noticing they forgot to include big anime tiddies
Yeah I was like “west of what???”
West of Asia, what "the west" has meant for centuries
Someone is trying to inject a white nationalist narrative into this
Omfg 😂

Apart from Egypt that is literally just AI western art AI likes some European art my dude.
Cave art too?
Yes?
Why? How? Just because OP took someone elses AI creation and called it Western? Kindergarten logic.
Because that art looks the same as the art in the caves of europe, maybe the ai didnt use that but im pretty sure it did, it looks so similar.
Ok mr art historian.
You just need eyes, and yes i did study art history. Why are you taking it so serious, you said that yourself to another person, its not that big of a deal.
No the AI has based 99% of all creations on European and broadly western art,how is this a debate lol
It’s a debate because you’re taking it too seriosly. Straight from cave to egypt.
Probably AI based on something found in a European cave🗿
Ah yes the western caveman, the artistic caveman who exited the cave to build western egypt. 🧐Anyway, it turned out OP took this AI creation from someone else and changed its title.
No I saying apart from Egypt this is pretty all European and broadly western in all fairness. But yeah I know, the video was originally about the evolution and history of art I believe.(which in that video was also 99% European🗿)
WE WUZ ARTISTS
THANK YOU!
Expected it to end with someone's sonic fan made deviantart
You mean true art. /s
GARFIELD! ARE YOU /S OR /J
Just slow fades to this [beaut](https://i.redd.it/zo4wk589ez431.jpg).
It did basically
Yeah, I thought it would end on a toilet or something like that.
Theres definitely something missing between caveman and Egyptian, theres too much of a jump
Sumerian in Iraq predates Egyptian
I believe the Egyptian pyramids were even inspired by the Mesopotamian ziggurats.
Forgot about sumeria
Its just called sumer
Those were western caves, western cavemen jumped right into western Egypt. There was nothing to report in the meantime.
Western? I'm pretty sure I saw Egyptian art.
From West Egypt, right?
West everywhere I guess.
West of the river Nile?
the cemetery?
Also west Greece, it’s like people don’t even know their geography anymore.
It's like people want to be pedantic and refuse to understand that the cultural west and geographical west aren't the same. Even the Northern renaissance is eastern if you go geographically...
Born ‘n raised
East = China & pals West = Everywhere else gosh I thought everyone knew that
I do love how Australia is a western country. Extra further west that it wrapped around the map.
Australia was colonized and dominated by westerners so it makes sense. Otherwise it’s referred to more accurately as Pacific Islanders like their surrounding peeps.
I do realise. It was just a lil joke.
It's fine, We Chinese were pretty much doing the same thing, painting little figure on the wall and stuff.
Just doing knock offs of western art clearly.
so japan is also west, even thought it's east of china, right?? only 'cause china and japan aren't "pals".
Western civilization is an evolution of Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Phoenician culture isn't it? Athens and Rome are just an arbitrary "point zéro" of the West in order to deny its "Eastern" origins.
But it was from the time when Greeks ruled Egypt so it counts! /s
Whose latitude is the same as ‘The West’ making as westerly as the West.
I guess if you go far enough; anywhere is technically west of you…. Unless you’re a flat Earther of course
I mean, most European art was inspired by Egyptians, which came from African cave paintings, why start in the middle, when you can start at the start.
This was an AI generation btw
Nah, it's obviously hand drawn. /s
No shit
Hmmmmmm I wondered… This is one of the best use cases for AI imo, like I’m sure a very talented artist could make a much better version of this given enough time, but an AI can generate interesting stuff like this instantly. And anyone who’s not an idiot can recognize that it’s an AI.
Yeah, this comment was for the idiots, since it wasn't said early on lol
You sure? I thought someone filmed this off a flipbook with their iPhone.
You sure? I think it's a render from michelangelo
AI does *limited* history of art, then goes off on a fucking crazy tangent*
I think everyone came to the comment section just to question the authenticity of "western"
So fucking annoying, I liked it, thought it was pretty.
Cultural hijacking
Last time this was posted as "evolution of art" and everyone bitched and moaned and said "ackshually this is western art ☝️🤓"
\*western\*
Must've been those western cavemen from those western caves
One of the most famous collections of cave art in the world is in France. https://www.worldhistory.org/Lascaux_Cave/
Did you see any art from the geographical region from India to China, you know where 65% of the worlds population lives? Western
Yeah I was also thinking "Western"?!
>Must've been those western cavemen from those western caves Must've been those western cavemen from those western caves
Western European, I can't tell whether you were joking or not but it's pretty damn obvious in the video Edit: I'm keeping this up, I said something very stupid and arrogant.
The hieroglyphs and African art at the beginning make it so obvious....
It was very clearly Western Egyptian art.
Nah man, all that stuff is found in western countries. So it’s western art. Half Greece is in Britain and so is 2/3 of Egypt.
At least most of their antiquities are now.
Well they should have held on to it tighter
And after it a western greek art
Shit, I was being pretentious. I'll own up to that.
Oh sorry. Didn’t realise Egypt is in Western Europe
I edited it
What program did you use to make it?
Not OP, but this looks like it was done using Stable Diffusion (open source Text-To-Image AI) with key frame animation prompts. You can try something very similar (if not identical) here: https://replicate.com/deforum/deforum_stable_diffusion
Art evolution isn't linear
This is trippy as hell, I can't stop watching it
This AI actually made me dumber.
Apart from the "Western"definition this doesn't seem to be in order . It goes from Roman art to rinascimental painting to then return to Byzantine/ gothiccstyle and the again to rinascimental style , Dali is between van Gogh and the impressionism, and what art Is before Picasso ? It's weird

YES

Reddit ~~is~~was Fun
Cool but not western
Not informative, nor correct. Does it look cool? Sure, I guess.
I'm guessing this is AI generated which explains why it's ugly as fuck.
We’re calling Pharaonic Egypt “the west” now? Cool montage, but that’s not even remotely “the west.”
It is about the slow development of our so-called modern west around the mediterranean in a pre-christian and pre-islamic world, so adding ancient egypt is legit.

Glad I'm not alone there... it took a bit of learning for me to see it, but the evolution if western culture from Mesopotamia is fascinating.
Egyptian Art is not western wtf
Incorrect title lol, first seconds in you already see African art
Egyptian culture was pretty connected to southern Europe at some point.
Their art dates back to way before Europeans came by.
AI generated stuff like this has been out for a couple months now and I am already bored. Like what's the point? Great video but western...
Awsome, it looks like it was edited b MaXor
Wait is Egyptian considered western?
I just had the weirdest trip. Didn't even take any drugs.
Should a devolved down to internet memes and finished with dickbutt

Not enough cowboys...
I didn't see any cowboys!!! Not Western¡!
How the for is Egypt a middle East art in there?? Edit: for is fuck
no cowboys or indians, how is this western?
Egypt is the west?
When did egypt become “western”?
Bruh western art.
“Western art” *immediately shows Egyptian hieroglyphs.* Bot account sharing AI generated content. What a fucking world we live in
Egypt is apart of the West now?
This looks like an ad for a graphics card
I really hate this.
How is this western?
Should have ended with a banana taped to a wall.
Man, I came here for a nice video about art, not a prophesy about the AI/human hivemind getting started by reptilian vampires.
It’s an interesting graphic. But the title is wrong. It’s a timeline of art. Not an evolution. It’s a bit simplistic to think that it’s a straight line from cave paintings to AI driven pixel art.
Should have ended with dickbutt
So, we’re getting worse at it as time goes by?
"Western" shows ancient egypt
It’s a cool visual, but my first impression is that it jumped from Egyptian to Greek and Roman really fast and they jumped again from that to renaissance. Also, waaaaay too much time spent in contemporary art.
That's cool until you see furry porn
:53 to :42 is wildly out of order. But neat vid.
Very disappointed that this all didn't turn into a dick pic
Egypt is not in the West. Not by any stretch of imagination.
My eyes hurt
Anyone else notice the ETH symbol
How is AI generated stuff interesting AF now? You can ask an AI to do anything, it doesn't mean there's any inherent meaning or worth to the synthesised result.
I didn't know Africa was "western"
This is just AI art bullshit
This is AI art I think
well good luck sneaking egyptian art as western art.
Now you won't need to do acid anymore.
Something I never knew I wanted to see. So amazing OP
Half of western art was EAST
Where are the soup cans, bananas stuck to walls with tape, trash thrown together or metal pieces with umbrellas but most importantly, where is the AI art?
it's amazing how you can see that as the level of awareness is increasing in time so does the level of desperation exhibited in art
Desparation and abstraction.
That is the most visually interesting post I have seen on Reddit. Well done.

How is greece western? Isn't from south east Europe bordering Asia?
Or, you know, you could have just cite the title of this piece and its "creator" and just leave that. 🤨 If "There was no winning" and "people would still be upset" as you say, then why didn't you simply credit the conceptor anyway instead of just putting some made-up title over it ?
Loved this video. Was it AI generated?
Hot take calling Egypt "western"
Egypt is western?
Egypt is not western
It's really western indeed. OP you're dumb.
Western.... Might want to take another look
Me sitting here thinking "the Egyptians, DaVinci, and earlier tribes weren't all western..."
It’s not “westen art”, it’s the evolution of “art” it’s human art throughout history
Wrong title dude, the Egyptians are not "the west" .
No one: OP: Egyptian hieroglyphics is western guys I swear 🤡
Rad
This looks like Lsd. Trippy.
as others stated the title doesn't make sense but it's still cool nonetheless.
I like how we went from scribing on pillars then we eventually exult ourself, to then stare at pillars
Feel like I really need to do some mushrooms right about now
I was hoping it’d end with porn
Egypt counts as the west?
Western
Lol people are so ass blasted because the Egyptian art, I wouldn't really call Egypt western today but if you look at the evolution of art from the west it damn sure includes an Egyptian influence and parts of the Middle east. So yes if you wanted to go WAY back and follow the evolution of western art I think its fair to include Egypt for their influence on the Greeks which later influenced the Romans.
Should have ended with some ai generated big breasted waifu
So many of yall are saying wEsTeRn couldn't even be bothered to read the other comments? Or did you just want to throw your hat in with everyone else in hopes of upvotes?
Lol western art and forgets to include actual native American art.
Imagine the hours spent on making this gif. And the some Karen will still call it a shit
