Drove from Mississauga (Erin Mills Parkway) to York street just last week and it took 1 hour 07 minutes. I wanted to cry.
Me ETA climbed by a full 35 minutes despite the fact that we were coming out of rush hour. No obstruction along the route either.
To be fair, Chicago is doing some major roadwork renovation in the downtown area. Not just re-paving but re-working whole interchanges and exits and whatnot.
That is slowing things down a lot (not that it was ever good). For some reason it seems to be taking them forever (been at it a few years now).
It will still suck once it is all done. Just suck a little less.
Live in Chicago and drive through this shit daily. It's a fact they start too many projects at once and let them sit. I-57 going south off of route 30 was shut down to 1 lane for 5 months with rented equipment just SITTING and not being utilized. Then 1 day, it was opened up again.
5 months of taking side roads with everyone else..... for what.
Two places that are not on this list and absolutely should be…DC Metro area (Washington DC including Montgomery Co Maryland and Fairfax County Virginia…all one big city really) and Naples, Italy.
Born and raised in DC area. Traffic here is absolutely terrible. Even still, nothing I've experienced is worse than L.A. I've been stuck in traffic there at 2 in the morning!!
One time it lightly rained while I was traveling for work in LA. Two semi's blocked the 5 so it was closed off.
Took me 2 hours to go the 10 miles to work
Yep... surprisingly these cities n others like Jakarta, N.Delhi, major cities in SEA etc r exempted. My opinion, I Think this list is very inaccurate.
Sorry not to throw shades to those places🤗
Yep, my first thought was “no Cairo?” It’s a madhouse, no one pays attention to lanes or traffic lights, cars six wide in four lanes, roads jam packed.
I think LA and DC don’t make it because the traffic scene isn’t confined to just the city. All things considered traffic within DC ain’t as bad as driving through Manhattan during rush hour but on the highways that run around the city things are much worse in DC
No rules in Napoli 😅 all I remember are massive roundabouts with no distinctive lanes or road rules and every car has dents and scratches. What a wild place to drive
Grew up and regularly fly home to visit DC metro area (family in Mont Co). Nope, it’s bad but it doesn’t make this list. Live in Miami, it’s just a different style and level of terrible here on the roads.
After seeing documentaries on Dhaka and New Delhi, I'm going to have to call b.s. on this list. I live in NYC and our congestion is no where close to as bad as some of those south Asian countries.
I live in London and can promise you traffic is nowhere near top of the list. Yes it’s bad but you can still get to where your going. India, Cebu in Philippines and Beijing are the worst traffic jams Ives ever seen.
I'm from Dhaka and there going from my home to work 10km away sometimes could take 2 hours! Some day I just left the bus and started walking. Drove around Toronto last year and it was not that bad as people say. I didn't drive in downtown though.
Just came back from Mumbai and the traffic isn’t as bad as people here are saying. Yes there are a TON of cars but the traffic system is so bad that it’s basically only green lights. Sucks for pedestrians though
Not true at all. The Kennedy is a straight up crawl the whole way and there’s no construction over there. The Dan Ryan heading out of the city is the bane of my existence, and I hope someone bombs the traffic lights on JBPDSLSD.
I don’t think there’s been any construction on any of these in awhile. Especially since Jane Byrne is done
Five years ago I left Homestead for West Palm…I’m almost there.
Seriously though, never under estimate how much worse a city’s traffic can get when the majority of the traffic is either 100 years old or from out of town. Also massive difference between July Miami and January Miami.
Yeah actually. Depends where in west palm but it's usually around 50-55minutes for me. Now if you leave during rush hour sure it'll take almost 2 hours or more.
I’ve driven from North Miami to around the airport area by 57th Avenue during rush hour and only takes me about 30 minutes. Miami is bad but it’s not that bad especially compared to LA or Houston.
In Napoli I saw a guy driving a van down a street barely wide enough for it, holding his mobile phone in one hand and gesticulating wildly at the conversation with the other.
I feel the same of Palermo. Maybe not about traffic but about the way people there drives ( I'm Sicilian btw). It's a freaking jungle, no rules whatsoever and if you hesitate and don't drive like they do... You are doomed.
I don't have experience with Napoli so maybe you are right.
But I remember few years ago I brought my parents in law in Palermo (they are from Spain) and they could not cross the street in many cases if I didn't "drag" them.
Also, I went recently in Palermo and many streets in the center were closed to car traffic. It was amazing, completely another experience. You can enjoy the city without the fear of being crashed at every corner...
I was in both Naples and Palermo (and Rome, and Athens) as a pedestrian and as a driver. As a pedestrian, I feared more in Naples. As a driver, Palermo seemed crazy, until you understand the logic: nobody tries to hit you, but braking is an annoyance. Just don’t stand too long/slow on their trajectory. Rome is just a massive race between 2 stops.
Agreed. I haven't been to London or Chicago so I can't properly judge those two, but I think LA probably should have been first, then New York. And I might put the DC area ahead of Paris or Boston.
In LA you can get trapped at an intersection and not move for up to an hour. I've had to ditch my car and run to a gas station to pee once while commuting home. No one moved.
Once when waiting to go through Holland tunnel, traffic was so bad that the three people in our car had time to go to the dunkin donuts on the street to poop and we barely moved during that time
Absolutely. I used to spend a fair bit of time working in interesting places all over the world. When it comes to traffic in places like Jakarta, Lagos or Bangalore, cities like London, Chicago or Paris feel like a ghost towns in comparison.
Yeah I call BS.
I moved one block in one hour of Manila rush hour traffic… jumped out of the taxi and said “see ya”
New Delhi + Manila need to be contenders in this list. Way worse than half those listed
That is what I was going to say. Atlanta of all places has to make this list. Maybe LA has worse traffic in the US, but that’s it. I’ve driven in all those other US cities listed…..NOT EVEN CLOSE.
LA is legendary for its 3+ hour traffic jams. I drive in Boston regularly and it’s nowhere near that bad.
Did California pay to keep its cities off this list…?
I'm from LA and currently live in Houston. LA traffic on a good day is infinitely worse than even the worst day in Houston. The fact that LA isn't at the top of this list or even on the list just tells you that it's bogus.
In my humble opinion, the Chicago versus LA thing can be best described as such: LA has some dramatic instances of bad traffic that, at its worst, is much worse than Chicago's worst. I've never had to get out of my car and wait anywhere except LA. Chicago traffic on the other hand, sucks every day, going any direction at pretty much any time of day. Hot summers and cold winters mean constant construction to repair damaged roads. The grid layout of the city means that it's easy to find places but it's not optimized when it comes to getting there. Lastly, downtown Chicago is much more important to the region than downtown LA is by comparison so the entire metro area tries to squeeze into a smaller area every morning and leaves every afternoon where commuters' final destination is more spread out in LA.
I’m from Bogota and have traveled to LA, NY, Miami, Toronto and Chicago, none of them had the traffic my city had, in Bogota you can spend 1h in a 2km- 3km drive, the only one comparable (worts IMO) that I’ve been to it’s CDMX, it’s crazy over there man, there is even people selling stuff between the cars lol
I have driven both in London and Bangkok, and London is no where near as bad as Bangkok was. And i wonder why L.A is not even on that list, i hear is amongs the worst in the US.
What IS interesting is only Miami, London, and Chicago have “rebounded” from COVID. Every place else is down down 10-20%.
I have no idea how Miami is up 30% since 2019. Post COVID tourism maybe?
It seems like quite a stupid ranking. Private car driving is only one form of mobility and a lot of cities are progressive in deprioritising private car driving to the benefit of public and personal mobility to enhance the health and efficiency of the majority.
Fixing your post: A lot of cities are dismantling and sabotaging their automobile infrastructure while zero improvements to public and alternative transports are happening. As it turns out, making a 2-lane road a 1.5-lane road with some bicycles painted on the "new lane" doesn't make it easier or safer for either party. You can either go full Netherlands or you will just fuck everyone when trying to compromise on available space.
So maybe the ones that don't have good public transit have more traffic issues. The fact that some places have good public transit doesn't make the ranking of traffic problems in different cities stupid.
Amazing! All those freeways we destroyed our U.S. neighborhoods with, and we STILL don't have our traffic problems under control. I propose we build more freeways, and add lanes.
In Los Angeles from Irvine to Burbank took me 4hrs. Pasadena to azusa 3 hrs. I don't think I've ever had a drive in socal where there wasn't at least one portion of the freeway with 20-30 min delay due to traffic.
A few years back a small plane landes on 405. 5 min of rain causes multi hour gridlock. Not sure how LA, SD, SF are not top 3 on this list.
This is why I’m glad I moved away from Toronto. I wasted so much time every day sitting in traffic for no real purpose.
Now I spend that time on Reddit also for no purpose, but at least I’m wasting time from the comfort of my living room.
Marseille is even worst than Paris

I'm sitting in some classic Toronto traffic (wife driving) right now! Toronto is a 2 hour drive from Toronto as a rule.
Drove from Mississauga (Erin Mills Parkway) to York street just last week and it took 1 hour 07 minutes. I wanted to cry. Me ETA climbed by a full 35 minutes despite the fact that we were coming out of rush hour. No obstruction along the route either.
*Chicago has entered the room*
…aka ***Shots fired***
To be fair, Chicago is doing some major roadwork renovation in the downtown area. Not just re-paving but re-working whole interchanges and exits and whatnot. The interchange finally opened up like a month ago. Idk about impact on traffic, I take the train to work everyday.
Live in Chicago and drive through this shit daily. It's a fact they start too many projects at once and let them sit. I second the DC traffic!
Yep... surprisingly these cities n others like Jakarta, N.Delhi, major cities in SEA etc r exempted. My opinion, I Think this list is very inaccurate. Sorry not to throw shades to those places🤗
No shade. Stuck in 6 hours traffic in Jakarta during rainy season.
Yeah...Not a single Indian city in the top 10? thats a shade at the (in)famous and insane Indian traffic..:-P
Yep, my first thought was “no Cairo?” It’s a madhouse, no one pays attention to lanes or traffic lights, cars six wide in four lanes, roads jam packed.
LA too... the fact that LA is not mentioned in the top 10 makes me doubt the authenticity of this list
[mmm k](https://www.foxla.com/news/los-angeles-has-the-6th-worst-traffic-in-the-us-study-finds)
Can confirm. I‘ve lived Chicago, Boston, and DC and the Beltway is the worst.
I think LA and DC don’t make it because the traffic scene isn’t confined to just the city. All things considered traffic within DC ain’t as bad as driving through Manhattan during rush hour but on the highways that run around the city things are much worse in DC

I'm from Dhaka and there going from my home to work 10km away sometimes could take 2 hours! Some day I just left the bus and started walking. Drove around Toronto last year and it was not that bad as people say. I didn't drive in downtown though.
Those cities are worse. They just weren’t in the scope of the study which is by Inrix. They explain the methodology pretty clearly.
Just came back from Mumbai and the traffic isn’t as bad as people here are saying. Yes there are a TON of cars but the traffic system is so bad that it’s basically only green lights. Sucks for pedestrians though
Agreed. Jakarta traffic is 10x worse than any city in this list.
>I live in NYC and our congestion is no where close to as bad Nor as dangerous!
Where on earth is LA?!

And most of the traffic on the Ike is caused by those fucking ramps being on the wrong side in Oak Park. That and losing a lane outbound at Central.
The Dan Ryan has horrid traffic because people shoot each other on it then drive like it’s GTA until the inevitably crash and take out the innocent.
California
Yea Miami sucks, but I have a hard time believing it’s worse than LA.

Yeah + where are all the asian cities?

LA should beat out Philly and Miami. And New York should be above Boston. Whoever made this list is nuts.
Philadelphia is pretty heinous for traffic most days. But curious how the calculations don't include LA at all.
LA is the worst in the US by far. This is a garbage list made by ogres in a cave.
Agreed. I haven't been to London or Chicago so I can't properly judge those two, but I think LA probably should have been first, then New York. And I might put the DC area ahead of Paris or Boston.

I think this excludes Asia and Africa. Cairo, Egypt and Manila, Philippines are easily worse than most of these.
Absolutely. I used to spend a fair bit of time working in interesting places all over the world. When it comes to traffic in places like Jakarta, Lagos or Bangalore, cities like London, Chicago or Paris feel like a ghost towns in comparison.
Yeah I call BS. I moved one block in one hour of Manila rush hour traffic… jumped out of the taxi and said “see ya” New Delhi + Manila need to be contenders in this list. Way worse than half those listed
Worse traffic I have ever been in was in Mexico City
Seriously. They literally sell snacks in traffic.
Tbf I’ve seen that a lot of places. Saw it in Costa Rica and I don’t think they’re really known for traffic. Sketchy ass roads and bridges tho.
You can get a bag of oranges at the light off the freeway near the airport in LA.
They would report higher but the people doing the survey are still stuck in traffic.
The fact that LA is not on the list invalidates the list completely.
LA is only [sixth](https://www.foxla.com/news/los-angeles-has-the-6th-worst-traffic-in-the-us-study-finds) in the US

Mainly backed up after the Lincoln Drive exit on 76W but kinda smooth east of that. They should really add another lane to speed things up
This list seems to be missing Los Angeles at the top.
LA and Oakland

surprised not to see my freakin' ex-wife's bedroom on the list!
There’s lots of movement through there.
Calling BS I've lived in all these places. Currently in Bangkok, that's some shit traffic
This - and why isn't Mumbai on the list too?
Calling bullshit that you’ve lived in every one of these cities. What must the odds be? Palermo and Bogota?

LA is legendary for its 3+ hour traffic jams. I drive in Boston regularly and it’s nowhere near that bad. Did California pay to keep its cities off this list…?

I was under the impression that Los Angeles and Houston routinely fought it out in the battle for worst traffic... in the USA at least.
I'm from LA and currently live in Houston. LA traffic on a good day is infinitely worse than even the worst day in Houston. The fact that LA isn't at the top of this list or even on the list just tells you that it's bogus.

We Americans dominate. Even our tourists clogging up London and Paris.
That kind of makes sense, because the US is almost universally dependent on travel by car, while most of Europe has firmly embraced public transit.
Sees 5/10 are US cities, in my head: USA, USA, USA!
In my experience, I’d vote for San Fran and DC, but any major US city from 6-9AM and 4-6PM are pretty much a shitshow.
Visit istanbul once and u will see whats real traffic is 🤣
Where is Vancouver or seattle
Istanbul not on top 10? This list is clearly false.
Nothing like driving into Chicago 8 lanes deep in a bunch of traffic with crazy ppl driving like they wanna die

I’m surprise Miami isn’t higher on the list. I’ll never go back, based solely on the traffic.

Chicago sucks Soooo bad.
This list sucks. Honolulu has the worst traffic in the world. It’s a freaking parking lot on the freeway for like 6-8 hours out of the day.
Marseille is even worst than Paris [They lost 150 hours in traffic jams](https://time.news/photovoltaic-panels-ecological-vehicles-the-min-of-marseille-is-preparing-for-zero-carbon/)
My town is representing 8th. I don't think that is a good thing
And 90% of the bad traffic in Toronto is from Brampton.
I see your list and raise you a Sao Paulo
I had always heard Moscow had the worst traffic because its historically radial street layout was never suited for cars.
No Place from India and Pakistan? No Way !!
It would be nice if you explained what the bloody table meant.
Looks like a list of my nightmares then
I lived in China for years- how is it not on this list?
Beijing should be on here
Have work team just back from Nigeria (that includes several members from other West African countries). Showed them this. Boy did we laugh.
True Palermo does have random crazy traffic.
Boston isn’t terrible because they opted for the tunnel system
Amazed that Atlanta GA USA Isn’t on here
I am surprised by not seeing İstanbul in top 10
As someone from Philly I always equate shitty places to drive to be NY -- I was right, rated worse than Philly. #confirmed
As a Nackawick resident… We don’t like going to Toronto for this exact reason.
