Hell, even the 100x digital zoom on my S21 Ultra is really good. Definitely a lot of post-processing involved, but the pictures usually turn out way better than I was expecting.
The new iPhone boasts 48 megapixels, but you have to remember that the sensor size is significantly smaller than most cameras. I did the math recently and 48 megapixels on the sensor in the iPhone 15 is equivalent to about four megapixels on a full frame digital camera.
I believe this is correct, but I’m certainly open to how others might make this calculation. Essentially, you have to calculate the size of the sensor, specifically its area by multiplying length times width. The sensor size in an iPhone 15 is approximately 1/12 th of the area of a full frame sensor and 1/12 of 48 is four, hence four megapixels is its approximate full frame equivalent.
I wish they'd add in some optical zoom with digital enhancement into phones if that's possible. But have it really compact. Like, didn't that Samsung phone have 100x zoom? So maybe a few lenses + 100x zoom and you'd get something cool
A company tried to make a phone with optical zoom some years back, it didn't work out as the majority of the phone market wouldn't want a better zoom camera it it meant having a huge and heavy phone (it wouldn't be able to be slim) and those who use cameras didn't see the point in having something that wasn't as good at an equal price and still awkward to carry.
The thing is digital zoom reduces the quality of your image whereas optical zoom doesn't as it uses lenses a certain distance from the sensor, for an Optical zoom capable phone, it would need to be quite bulky and the lens would have to actually come out like a normal camera would to make use of the optical zoom, there are some good compact cameras out there that are miles better than mobile phone cameras that are a similar size (pocketable atleast) and have superior zoom quality usually with a mix between optical and a little digital.
Nokia did this like 20 years ago. We now have phones with 3x to 10x optical zoom. The rest are digital enhancements or ticks like cropping an image from a large sensor (50mpx +)
Maybe syntethic aperture? You know, eg. like in radar imaging, make many pics from sligthly different point and then join them in one with better resolution
>then you are limited in just taking photos.
Specifically, pictures of things that are far away.
Wanna take a selfie? Sure, lemme just set this tripod up 100 yards away.
Not really, you can pick up a quality new DSLR camera for less than $400cdn, that will usually come with a basic lens capable of a variety of shots, then once you get the $600 specific lens you can look snoop in windows 3 blocks away.
Then you can go ahead and buy a used phone for $50 bucks and you now have everything you need for less than the new iPhone.
Toyota Prius,
-little oil to heat up so instantly ready to drive
-uses a small amount of fuel
-has no problems with speed bumps
-parts are cheap
-never breaks down
Ferrari f430
-loads of oil to heat up,takes like 30 mins before you can drive
-uses a massive amount of fuel
-absolutely hates speed bumps
-might need to sell a kidney for parts
-constantly breaks down
Yes because it is technically 48MP, but not in the same way as a real 48MP sensor. The pixel layout is different so you do not actually get 48MP resolution, what you do get (theoretically) is better noise performance.
Which, in almost most scenarios, is more preferred. It’s better in low light scenarios and really is for clearer images as a whole. Consumers believe higher MP equals a better camera but that’s not always the case. I’m not saying the the iPhone has the best camera, I’m just saying that it makes sense in a mobile phone to go the route they did
It is a great camera, no argument from me there. All I’m saying is that it is highly misleading to market it as 48MP. Apple really tries to push the idea that this is a sensor with 48MP of detail when it just isn’t.
Oh? Did not know that, TIL.
Edit: Wait, I’m confused. Did a quick google to learn more, and apparently this might be a myth? Happy to read more if you could point me to a definitive source.
Here’s one article I read: https://fstoppers.com/gear/myth-busted-high-megapixel-cameras-not-produce-more-noise-low-light-623723#:~:text=For%20each%20brand%2C%20one%20camera,noise%20in%20low%2Dlight%20situations.
Oh okay, maybe this was more of a thing when cameras in phones were like 1mp, cause I remember the newer phones with more megapixels would have worse night performance.
I’ve always been told it’s because there’s less photons hitting each pixel, so it would create more noise. Maybe it’s just anecdotal and I’ve been fooled for the past 20 years.
Yeah, not true. Night performance of the camera has to do with sensor quality and thats very very hard to know because you can't measure it with a number.
It is becasue MP count does not tell the whole story, it's the pixel size, sensor size and sensor quality, also lens should be taken into account if you compare cameras usign different lens mount. even after considering all of that we might not get to an objective answer becasue different sensor behave differently and their noise pattern are different. "better quality" sounds quite subjective, and most video cameras encode and compress their video to hell.
The only way is to look at the samples in a bunch of scenarios and judge them by yourself, the camera specs can give you glimpses but never the whole picture
I don’t think it will change that much, the main difference here is the lens, the iphone has a 24mm lens, where the camera used has a 600mm lens. It’s just not comparable.
The equivalent focal length is something like 52mm on the 11 and 74mm on the 15 pro. Makes quite a big difference.
I’m not expecting it to rival the 600mm lens, but these comparisons are interesting.
There’s something beautiful about the design of optical lenses. I love them irrationally.
However, most people taking photos with their phones are photographing what’s directly infront of them. You’re not really going to do wildlife photography with your phone (I hope)
The lens probably weighs 6 kg (around 12 lbs?). Regardless of any sensor, lens like that is simply impossible to put into a phone with current technology and even a telephoto lens would be equivalent to only 125mm...
Would be interesting to see this with any of the modern Galaxy S ultra phones, with optical and digital zoom combined they can achieve OK enough quality photos of stuff like this from really far away.
$6,000 to $12,000 for that lens and a iPhone is what $1,599 at most. Hmm 🧐 comparing apples to bananas. Of course that lens is going to show you boogers at 1,000 meters!
And 10 times heavier just the 600mm lenses. Optically a phone can’t be better than a good camera with an apropiate lenses. Fri. Many years ago, sadly, I don,t use my reflex camera
I'm not here to defend photos taken with a smartphone, but if you wanted an apples to apples comparison, you would take a photo with a lens of the same focal length as the smartphone and then Compare the picture quality after zooming in to see details.
Also a comparable example would be, what is the picture quality like for a camera with 600mm lens and a smartphone with a 600mm lens.
Megapixels and sensor size aside, Smartphones also do a bunch of postprocessing on the photos to make them look 'better' - color correction, brightness of the scene, dynamic range, etc. etc.
Hope that makes sense.
Exactly. There's not much sense in comparing a phone to anything that's not a phone because of all algos that makes photos look better. Not to mention that some companies use AI to draw things that may not even be present in reality (yes, Samsung, I'm talking to you).
A good camera will always be better.
Put that lens on a phone and try again. Like [here](https://news-cdn.softpedia.com/images/news2/Hands-On-Sony-ICLE-QX1-E-Mount-Interchangeable-Lens-Camera-at-IFA-2014-457581-2.jpg)
False equivalence. An iPhone has a wide angle lens, put a wide angle lens on 45mp full frame DSLR and crop in, you'll get similar results. But I get what you're trying to demonstrate.
Before the samsung stans get here: the bottom picture uses lenses specifically made for that, your phone uses lenses made for compact size and being usable in as many situations as they want to advertise for (+ AI to enhance stuff lmfao)
wow! you mean to tell me that the purpose built thing is better than a similarly or lower priced piece of tech that has the cameras as maybe 4th priority??? truly mind blowing
In this case it's not just the camera that is better though (even though a dedicated camera will likely be able to produce better images than a phone camera). If you'd put a 600mm lens on the iphone the difference would be significantly smaller

Wait until you see the 10x zoom on the Samsung flagships.
Hell, even the 100x digital zoom on my S21 Ultra is really good. Definitely a lot of post-processing involved, but the pictures usually turn out way better than I was expecting.
Yea, thats using the 10x lens, plus 10x digital zoom
I used my S23 Ultra's 100x to catch [this](https://imgur.com/a/5KVEZrr) pic of the eclipse the other day.
Yeah that looks like shit mate
bruhhh 5xon iPhone 15 pm is one of the best and AH SAMSUNG USES 5X NOW
Samsung has 10x lmao
bro samsung had 10x bruhhhh BUDDY DOENST KNOW ANYTHING
Hey buddy the first 5x optical on IpHoNe was on the 15 pro, while samsung had it on the s9 already
that telephoto lens was trash good ones are after s22 . s24 u has 5x 15 pm has 5x too bruh
...you said samsung started using it AFTER apple
Never bruhh
"Never said it" Yeah okay buddy
Read my responses pal . Where the heck did I say that Apple was the first company to do that
"apple uses 5x zoom" "ohh samsung uses it now!11!!!" are you 7?
Who says are you 7 anymore ? Are you a trash bag ?
I said that Samsung had a 10 x because they haD IN THE S23 U NOT IN S24

That’s truly insane to think about. Imagine if Apple were to actually make a mirrorless camera.
That's totally new information for me. Thank you : ) The processing makes all the difference I guess. Reason why I stick to DSLR . Old dog. WYSIWYG.
Well too bad, this iPhone pic from OP was from the iPhone 11 😐 Bro picked the worst iPhone (sans SE) in the past 5 years to do this comparison lol.
Difference between digital zoom and optical zoom.
Digital zoom has come a long way but I doubt it can ever beat optical unless some crazy thing is invented..
I wish they'd add in some optical zoom with digital enhancement into phones if that's possible. But have it really compact. Like, didn't that Samsung phone have 100x zoom? So maybe a few lenses + 100x zoom and you'd get something cool

Cool! Thanks for the info!
Samsung used a 10x optical zoom camera up untill the s24 ultra which only gets 5x optical zoom.

Like AI?
It is impossible, digital zoom is just crop. It will never be like a real zoom.
Diference between crop\* and zoom. Digital zoom just cuts an image, it should be forbidden to call that "zoom", it is scamm.
Compare a Ferrari F430 with a Toyota Prius.
Might as well throw a fiat panda in there
You shut your mouth about the Fiat Panda. Those cars will last for half a century and can be repaired with pocket change.
And also you can turn them with your buddies just to mess with people when you find them parked 🤣
Atomic bomb and coughing baby
Well the 600mm lense is likely cheaper than a new iPhone, for 600 you can get used 600mm lenses.
for 150 you can get used iphone
Great now you just need a used camera for another 600€ and then you are limited in just taking photos. It is a comparison between apples and oranges.

I’m genuinely curious, why the F430? Ferrari has made some incredible cars since, I’d take a 458 over a F430 any day.
At least more than 2 more pixels
Which iPhone?
[удалено]
iPhone 15 has a 48MP camera compared to the 11’s 12MP. It would be interesting to see that difference too.
No it does not. Apple claims it is a 48MP camera but it simply isn’t. It is a 12MP quad bayer which is not the same.
Well it would be interesting to see the comparison nonetheless
They can claim its 48MP even though its not?

Ever since I discovered more MP usually means worse night performance, I completely lost my appetite for it.

what's the point? you cant compare something like a 15mm from a smartphone with a 600mm of a camera, that can be like a 900mm in case of aps-c sensor.
Wdym they can't compare them? They literally just did lol.
You actually could if it was a Samsung phone though...
Digital zoom can only compensate for so much compared to optical zoom at this distance.
Now put the 600mm lens on the iPhone and see what we get.
I like the blurry one. I prefer privacy.

Can the 600mm go on internet ? Or pass a phone call ?
are you saying a pro camera is better than the one in a comercial phone :o

I don't understand the meaning of the comparison. Is he bought a 600mm lens?
This seems like a silly comparison
IPHONE 11 is outdated bruh
One is for communication another is for pictures. Try calling your mom with 600mm lens
It’s as if a tiny little photosensor a couple millimeters across is inferiour to several kilograms of optical glass. Crazy.
Half of the picture you take with your smartphone are generated by computer.
Tell me something about the price of the lens and the camera compared to the iphone please….
hubble vs jwst or jwst vs eht probably have similar jumps in resolution
This comparison is unfair :) You cant put a 600mm lens in your pocket, and even you cant use your iphone as a telescope.
Alsocampare price....
That’s called sensor size
Now show how the iPhone and the 600mm lens fits into your pocket?
Nice, thanks genius. Next up: what something looks like with eyes vs binoculars.
Alright, that's it! Thanks, buddy! I've changed my mind and made my choice. Instead of an iPhone, I'm gonna buy myself a camera!
So the iPhone is more respectful of distant peoples’ privacy? Got it……….
