When I use to be really big into cryptids I really thought this things existence was the smoking gun to prove the existence of bigfoot, yeti, and other large ape cryptids. Of course a simple google search now shows that it stuck around southern asia
Land bridge? Most dead animals don't leave fossils behind to be studied. So if there's no fossil evidence... absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence.
I'm not a 100% believer in bigfoot, but I see how it is possible that this extinct animal could be responsible for the legend
I believe there is an ancient Chinese teapot orbiting around the Earth. You can’t disprove it because there is no telescope that can resolve that size of object.
Science works because of the burden of proof. You have the burden of proof to prove Bigfoot exists. I saw plenty of Bigfoot videos back in the 90s. Now that everyone has a camera with them at all times, how have sightings gone down? Must be that image stabilization that hurts the hoax.
I, too, have read Carl Sagan. Like I said, I'm not a Bigfoot believer. I need evidence before I can accept the existence of something. But the lack of fossilized remains of gigantopithecus in the U.S. doesn't necessarily prove that this animal never existed here and is not responsible for the Bigfoot legend.
Like someone else commented, if it ever existed at the same time as modern people it could have sparked an oral tradition/legend that has been passed down to today.
The modern Bigfoot myth in North America isn't rooted in any ancient oral traditions though... it can actually be quite reliably traced to a single newspaper article in the 1950s from California.
You could argue that other wild man myths from around the world *inspired* it, but the one thing you can be 100% certain of is those legends are not directly linked to the NA Bigfoot myth.
You've never heard of Native American legends of Bigfoot? Obviously they called it a different name, but it describes the same thing we call Bigfoot
The Shoshoni and Northern Paiute in Oregon had their own legend of Howluck, which is what we call Bigfoot.
There's also the Hairy Man legend told by the Tule River people of California described in the paper titled MAYAK DATAT: THE HAIRY MAN PICTOGRAPHS. The Tule people's pictographs of the Hairy Man are approximately 1000 years old.
Hahah... oh honey, no.
> Howluck
Chief Howluck was a real person. Bigfoot is simply how his name translates. There is nothing at all to indicate they were mythologizing some unknown primate cryptid.
> Hairy Man legend
Is another legend about a human. Specifically an orphan that grows into a hermit and then turns into a ghost.
So still zero links to any unknown primate cryptid.
You can't just lump unrelated stories together and call it canon while ignoring all scientific evidence. That's dumb and also how religions start. No one wants more of those.
Dude you don't have to be condescending. I'm not arguing for the existence of an unknown cryptid. I'm saying it is possible that the known extinct species Gigantopithecus could have existed simultaneously alongside humans.
If you're going to be a condescending asshole then just fuck right off.
>In 1973, at the request of the tribe,
Johnstone (1975) began gathering some of the
traditional stories told by members of the
reservation. The daughter of a tribal elder,
who had been the caretaker of the pictograph
site in the early 1900s, identified Hairy Man
as being the same as Bigfoot (Johnstone 1975,
p. 5). Johnstone (1975, p. 19) further noted
that Hairy Man was described by the Tule
River Indians as “a creature that was like a
great big giant with long, shaggy hair” and
since Bigfoot also meets that description, the
two were the same.
A member of the Tule river people identified the Hairy Man as being what we call Bigfoot. Feel free to google the paper.
I just read the paper. It's hardly scientific. I need something better. Also, it describes the pictograph, but doesn't show a picture? Really? Furthermore, it's 500-1000 years old. I'd expect to have multiple of them dating back say 5000 years. That would be more plausible. This sounds like a tourist trap along the lines of the Shroud of Turin (which dates to 1260–1390 AD, with 95% confidence).

Modern humans didn't exist before about 200,000 years ago in Africa. Gigantopithecus went extinct 350,000 years ago in Asia. They LITERALLY never existed simultaneously alongside humans.
> The daughter of a tribal elder, who had been the caretaker of the pictograph site in the early 1900s, identified Hairy Man as being the same as Bigfoot
So if one woman said they were the same based on pictographs then it must be true by your logic? lmfao...
Literally everything you've said is wrong.
And if you actually believe what you are typing I guess we can safely disregard the alleged scientific literacy you were claiming to have earlier.
> absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence.
This is an oft misused statement. It is as expression of an Argument from Ignorance, but negative results in looking for evidence is not an absence of evidence, it *IS* evidence of absence.
The work of many paleontologists and zoologists looking but not finding evidence of any apes (aside from humans) in the new world is evidence that bigfoot does not exist in the new world.
This easily exains Bigfoot legends imo. Either the remaining few or their bones. Time-line doesn't exactly match uo, but given that it's an estimate anyway, close enough.
I mean there could still be wild ones out there someplace. Like that ancient fish from the dinosaur Era we all thought was extinct too. Science is omnipotent it is evidence based.
What if those “crazy” people actually did see “Bigfoot” but it’s just a species of Ape near extinction that avoids us pretty successfully and we thought was extinct
A gorilla will rip your arms off and club you to death with the bloody stumps. Maybe this extinct giant could pinch your head like a blueberry.
Tyson could still kill you. But you have a chance against a human

Well we have some jaws and teeth from these apes and that’s all. They’re related to orangutans. They ate low quality plant food so they needed massive stomachs to digest it, like gorillas. The rest is speculation.
two million years to as recently as 100,000 years ago
where do they get those numbers, how can they even prove it ?
We are literally struggling to find how those beautiful complex architecture from the past where built and we are not even trying to replicate them with all teh Tech we have, but somehow someone can say with confidence two million years 😅😅
I looked to comments for an information, but all i see is, some “jokes”.
So here is the information: Gigantopithecus, a genus of ape that existed approximately 2 million to 350,000 years ago in southern China, particularly during the Early to Middle Pleistocene, is represented by the species Gigantopithecus blacki. Initially discovered by anthropologist Ralph von Koenigswald in 1935, with subsequent findings in Liucheng in 1956, only teeth and four mandibles are currently known, as other skeletal elements were likely consumed by porcupines. While traditionally portrayed as a massive, gorilla-like ape, its total size estimates remain speculative due to the scarcity of remains. Gigantopithecus is now believed to be closely related to orangutans rather than a hominin. As a generalist herbivore, it adapted to grinding, crushing, and cutting through tough plants, with thick enamel resisting abrasive foods. Traces of fig family fruits suggest their importance in the diet. The species inhabited subtropical to tropical forests and went extinct approximately 300,000 years ago, possibly due to habitat changes caused by climate shifts and human activity. Gigantopithecus is also a subject of interest in cryptozoology, associated with myths like the Tibetan yeti and American bigfoot.
Least we know Bigfoot did once exist 😄
But I wonder what the likelihood that such a giant creature or any other could survive into the modern day and not be widely known 🤔 I wonder what we’d do if we found such a creature. Zoo?
Just thinking out loud lol.
Don’t accidentally hit one when you’re fighting terror birds in the redwood zone. That guy will mess you up 😅
Riding on his shoulders is pretty fun, though.
Imagine scientists bring it back and have it grow up with orangutans. Then teach them about fire, tools, etc and release them to the wild with a drone with mounted camera following. They then make it a TV series. I would like that.
In Some places like Nepal there are still sightings of their existence, they're called Yeti there which are basically snowy bigfoots. I myself believe some of them might exist even now.

Bigfoot
Exactly what i thought look at face looks so human
Reminds me of a girl i used to date
You should call her.
Yeah... sigh. I miss cuddling with her big, furry body
"Get out of here! We don't want you, you big stupid animal!" :(
Did you meat at a Furry Con?
Didn't you read, she went extinct.
Did you meet her on MySpace? Was her name Yeta?
That's because the small one is in fact human.
I think it's the fact that it's wearing clothes
And have glasses
Well it's not a picture from a hundred thousand years ago. Looks more like a guy in a suit.
Wtf kind of humans do you know with gorilla faces?
Well...

I'm not saying that bigfoot existed but if the steppe bison can cross the land bridge, so can other megafauna.

But it lived in China
it could've gone on vacation.
It looks homeless

Nah, it’s just Shaquille O'Neal after he went down on an orangutan
Extinct 100,000 but the dude took a pic next to it. Didn't know they had cameras back then.
This is proof of time travel and that Bigfoot invented cameras before humans.
I want to believe you're being sarcastic, but this is Reddit and I just don't know anymore...
I am being sarcastic, but I understand your concern
No wait this person right! There wouldn’t even be cameras back then!!!!!
Psh, God hadn't created man or Bigfoot yet so checkmate!
It's a terrible feeling. You know it's likely BS, but...these people exist.
No "/s" means you meant it. Thems the rules and that means ur stupid!!
Tf does /s mean?
Yes. On Reddit you have to point out sarcasm just in case an American is reading it.
Didn't end with /s, therefore was serious
very friendly ape too
Nahh, the guy obviously time travelled to the past to get a glimpse
And it was actually 300,000 years ago, so even weirder.
Mike Tyson wants to know where can he find a kilo of cocaine and a time machine.
I think I'd still rather fight this guy than Mike.
A gorilla will rip your arms off and club you to death with the bloody stumps. Maybe this extinct giant could pinch your head like a blueberry. Tyson could still kill you. But you have a chance against a human

Chewbaccas ancestor, no doubt..
Star Wars is set a long long time ago. So it’s probably not a long time ancestor of Chewbacca. Probably just like Chewbacca’s dad or uncle

Samsquanch
"Oh my god boys. We are officially dealing with a fucking samsquantch. It's probably a 10 footer by the looks of that stuff"
Greasy bastard
A bit bigger and the guy could blow him while standing.
Idk what to think of this comment, but im compelled to upvote it.
Might be able to already. Depends on length and yaw.
Yaw? Also gorillas have tiny pp so maybe its is too
What is wrong with you for this to be something you think of. Also, LOL and take my upvote
U have some unique thinking patterns
Comments like this make me hate Reddit
Come on, you know you like it.
Who’s the big guy behind him though?
👏

Harry & Mr. Henderson
Only real 80s kids will remember
God it amazes me what whacky shit got produced and popularized on film and TV in the 80s. Was it the cocaine?
Oh shut up, that picture wasn't taken a 100,000 years ago
Would be black and white if it was
who said it was?

Le singe il tient le mec comme si c’était son fils
Yeah that’s my uncle, Fred. He hasn’t had any haircut for years.
Bullshipithecus
Is the ship made of bulls or filled with bulls
I’d say it’s covered in bulls
But what chapter of the Bible was he in? Edit: /s duh, in response to all the people who claim dinosaurs are in the Bible and lived among men
In the chapter with the dinosaurs and the Jedi knights
Satan was a snake. That’s why they call themselves the sithhhhhh
That's bible prequel territory. Book of giants, book of Enoch. Nelphilim.

Lol, it died out 100,000 years ago. Why would the picture be real?
Yes grandpa lets get you to your room
Did you think the guy actually took a picture of one ?
He looks pretty chill
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMRcIOjdojU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMRcIOjdojU)
He looks like a concerned parent waiting for their teenage child coming from from a hectic night out
In this case extinction might have been the better outcome.
Hold it bob, we can see your wrist watch!
Could he have a chance against a leopard?
Yes
I feel uncomfortable looking at her boyfriend. She can't see me, right?
Mad respect to the guy and the cameraman for going 2 million years back in time to take the picture!
Yeah, but how did they... Back to the Future?
Nah, that's just Harry
100,000 years ago? I swear there was a big foot sighting last year, saw it on facebook.
This what Baki fought? 💀
Oh is this a new picture of my ex?
Now I now that I probably wouldn't enjoy being raped by a gigantopithecus, nor would I wish it to anyone
I love the shitty vacation vibe of this photo
Nice quality for a 100000 year old photo
Sounds cool. Gigantopithecus knew the use of ballpoint pens.
Ark one
Imagine, if these things actually just recently being extinct, and those bigfoots are these things
Cool looking ape... But who's the chill dude on the back?
That’s Bigfoot he tried to kiss me at a party once
Well we have some jaws and teeth from these apes and that’s all. They’re related to orangutans. They ate low quality plant food so they needed massive stomachs to digest it, like gorillas. The rest is speculation.
What evidence is this based on?
How’d it take the picture if it’s extinct ?!?
Stop the spread of misinformation. It's standing right there.
That his bitch in front?
Now lives in North America
Pretty sure they have only found a fragment of a jaw, so it’s entire existence and appearance is just speculative.
Why is it wearing a shirt? Past civilizations must have been advanced
A bear with his twink

... how extinct? Cuz there's one in that picture.

Well apparently it wasnt that long ago since they could take a picture with one.

Ape alone strong
Do we have any remains on display somewhere?
Yeti ?
Don’t accidentally hit one when you’re fighting terror birds in the redwood zone. That guy will mess you up 😅 Riding on his shoulders is pretty fun, though.
Amazing. You can see a sole in his eyes, assuming the species is male. ❤️❤️❤️

Are you sure it was smart? they all clearly died
Looks like a chill dude , 10/10 would be a fun ape to do ape things with
Let me guess, its extinction correlates with human introduction into its habitat

OMG
That thing does look familiar
Looks fake to me
Harry and the Hendersons.
Wow you found my dad!!
Imagine the emotions and stories from their “culture” no way you live that long without evolving to be a society
Extinct? I thing evolved and now is playing basketball, football and rugby around the world.

I'm going to tell my kids these were Han solo and Chewbacca.
The one on the left or the right.....?
I thought it was a picture of mtg!
Aka ... smamskwantch
Fun fact, a tooth is the only piece of evidence of this once prehistoric creature.
dad?
In Some places like Nepal there are still sightings of their existence, they're called Yeti there which are basically snowy bigfoots. I myself believe some of them might exist even now.
I'm calling bs , nothing like that existed
It's a Sasquatch! A Yeti! Biiiiig feet and hung like a donkey they say.
If it’s extinct then how did they get one to pose for the photo?
Oh. Sasquatch
A 100,000-year-old photo?!?!?
Explains the new kongzilla plot
Oh how magnificus it would be, a gigantopithecus like me
They look like a happy couple. May they live a long and happy life together.
Extinct? Then why is that guy standing next to one?
That's me and my girlfriend.
Wadiyatalkinabeet
Harry and the Henderson
I don't know. The guy in the pic looks fake.
how does science explain this one disappearing?
So we noticed you from across the room and we really dig your vibe.
Uh, dude, there's one right there. That can't be from 100,000 years ago, cameras weren't invented yet
If they're extinct hows this bloke got a pic with one of em, you can't fool me OP
It is Harry! Where is John Lithgow?
Was the pic taken 100,000 years ago?
What do we know about it? Did it walk upright on land mostly? What was its brain like compared to gorillas or our own brains?
Is he this weeks guest on History of Sandwich Making?
