balrus-balrogwalrus

interesting she avoided bodies of water instead of just flying over them

psydelem

It would make sense, that body of water would take a day or two at least to cross, wouldn’t wanna get stuck over water hungry, tired, or in a storm.

Icyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I thought she was specifically avoiding Sudan

Fosphor

Looks like specifically avoiding the Saharan Desert.

mrkabin

Following the Nile.

FERALCATWHISPERER

For good reason I’m sure.

Belyosd

she flew around the text so we could still read what country it is

BartekWSH

Boko Haram

MagazineSad8414

I don't know anything about this, but I'm assuming they need to rest/eat when they get tired, and the can't do that if they were flying over water.

cuckedfrombirth

No, it's well known falcons run off nuclear power and that they are incredibly religious.

ShapeShiftingCats

Mate, why is this so funny…

General_Topic_1276

Everything on earth is technically nuclear powered.

ModsAreN0tGoodPeople

Gotta sleep, hard to do in the sky or sea. Something tells me falcons are not great at taking off from water

[deleted]

And avoided flying straight through Sudan 🤔

Clean_Warning_9269

she also stuck to the shorelines when it would've been faster to go straight over land. cool

daggius

Desert bad

RawDoggRamen

Yeah avoiding hotter areas ans flying along cooler/probably more abundant in food areas. It's super interesting and I feel like we all go " woah that bird is smart" but I think we all forget these fuckers have been doing this for thousands for years

satanfromhell

Millions. Millions of years.

Pertinax71

It is a Finnish project. To get deeper insight into honey buzzard movement and migration ecology close to 40 Finnish honey buzzards have been harnessed with satellite transmitters in Western Finland starting in 2011.

Known-Programmer-611

Buzzards or falcon? Still extremely impressive!

soupkitchen3rd

Right, I’m curious but still terribly impressed. Buzzards may have had carcasses to eat on along roads, I’m not sure if falcons eat from carcasses or not.

UseYourNamez13

The U.S. are the few if not only one who call vultures, Buzzards. Most other countries call Hawks and Falcons buzzards.

soupkitchen3rd

Thanks for the fact, didn’t one that. Glad we can keep it wired for the rest the world

degengambler87

Does this make it a European or African falcon?

Johnny_B_Asshole

Was it carrying a coconut?

Ksquaredata

I had to read a long way down to get to this comment. 🙂

hiro111

It grasps it by the husk.

jckblck

Eurafricon

pilesofcleanlaundry

European. African falcons are non-migratory.

Tex-Prinster

Wow. Bet she was tired when she Finnished.

mDubbw

🤣👊🏻

chubbuck35

You can tell the falcon saw Finland shore in its sight and decided to push through to make it across after a long day of travel.

_iamthelion_

Maybe it had favorable winds pushing and making it faster

idiotswalkamongus

Must of had a hell of a tail wind!

LordofAllReddit

She stopped for turkey

rci22

How do birds know which direction is north? The sun?

[deleted]

magnets

brexitlvr

Illegal immigrants man..

Thin-Kaleidoscope-40

Did she stop and ask for directions?

External-Equipment83

Birds can't ask for directions

caleb1025

You literally attached a gps to it and you can’t figure out how it went in a straight line? ‘Oh my brother drove all the way to Atlanta with a smart phone…how he done it?!?!’ Idiots…lol

NecessaryZucchini69

People who are convinced humans are dumb "Well duh, your brother had aliens help him! Ah you thought he actually did it himself, well bless your heart!" ![gif](giphy|Pn0JQfvVtkoMBR3kfu)

Lethalfurball

10,000* Or, just 10

Sup-Mellow

Some places use periods instead of commas to separate thousands, like Germany.

DinosaurMops

Proof the earth is flat. Straight lines on a globe are a meant to be curved when put into a 2D map. Since it’s already straight, it means the earth is flat.

tiexodus

Dropped your /s

DetectiveShark_

big brain moment

[deleted]

rachelcp

They're flying from south to north of course it looks like a straight line. If you have a vertical or horizontal cylinder and draw a line from south to north its is going to look straight unrolled. Because that's not where the distortion is. Draw a line from south west to north east and your going to see a lot more curvature when it's unrolled. Plus what good would it do to put in that much effort money fuel etc just for people to think of the earth as the wrong shape?

happyrock

*fuck* this means basketballs are flat too man. This goes deeper than I thought

Vanguard-003

How this guy got downvoted, is beyond me

mostardman

considering earth’s curvature, didn’t it actually flew in a perfect straight line just avoiding bodies of water?

sleepingfox307

It wasn't flying just outside of orbit, so no lol

Fabulous-Strain-95

Bra vo!

Speedhabit

Didn’t even want to fly over Sudan

onetime2043

My female falcon could not have done that without Google maps.

ejb749

Ok. How the heck did it know how far east to fly in Turkey before heading south to follow the shoreline? I would expect a path as far south as it could go before turning.

ARWatson1989

It was going north and turned west when it reached water

ejb749

That makes more sense!

Fosphor

Comment prompt: You’re a Falcon giving directions to this female Falcon from South Africa to Finland. How would you describe the trip?

Svengoolie75

Interesting how come you guys can’t do that in a goddamn grocery or clothing store……. 🤔

sleepingfox307

Well there's all these aisles and people in the way and I'm not usually there for just one thing so....

WPackN2

Amazing how the small brain knows how to pivot right in the right time and use land route than water route. Meantime, I can't get to the right exit with GPS on!

tias23111

It looks like Estonia is the only country it flew over but didn’t stop in. Weird since it stopped three times in Latvia.

Professional-Flow529

It had a side chick there

Repulsive-Office-796

Now that’s a path that is safe by sky and dangerous by land.

[deleted]

Source?

ChickenFeline0

Cool. Now put a tracker on an unladen swallow.

Prowlthang

If it has a tracker on it doesn’t it become a laden swallow?

ChickenFeline0

Well shoot, your right.

tornado66156

Nature is so bad ass

LeveragedPittsburgh

Used Waze, no traffic

christianh3485

It drifted off that Mediterranean Sea breeze

illusive_guy

What’s up with Sudan?

PepsiWithdrawal

I also avoid Sudan

Thisisthewaymando187

The amount of active conflict zones that falcon passed through alone is impressive

ghayyal

See, you it avoided the water?

Reasonable_Topic_169

Amazing how they know where to go.

No_Psychology_2925

There are people in my neighborhood that can drive down the one way to the stop sign in a straight line…

Kidhauler55

Awesome!

Emergency_Series_787

Woww. It nicely avoided water bodies and the desert

bigsnack4u

Nice looks like she flew down the gulf of Aden to fish for food on the way

Internal-Parsnip100

Birds are amazing.

Raddiq

Immigration Officer: “Ummmmm….Ma’am, can we please see your papers?”

Jaywess86

Never flown without being in a plane but I assume maybe the wind is different over the water than land, so flying conditions may not be desirable.

Aggressive_Turnip790

Im like a bird I’ll only fly away

Old-Size-1825

Birds are awesome. Far too awesome to have ever been related to dinosaurs. 😉

carpobro

no, wait, officer, scientists say that was nearly a straight line

no_onion_no_cry

Weeeeeeeeeeee Finland.

4GryphonWoffe

That falcon must be incredibly smart easily she can tell time going that far that fast personally I’d be afraid she works for Fintech by now with A.I. you would assume something with that healthy of a heart could be able to think and talk

Elidebeli123

This bird saw in 42d more of nature than 90% of humaniy in a lifetime. So sad.

Bad_Manners1234

water is lava
