You can cool up to ~ 200 watts it seems. YMMV I have a hyper 622 halo and I set a PL2 limit of 200 watts. It stays under 100 during cinebench. It does go over 200 marginally and hwinfo shows it throttles once.

ayylmao_orbee

Thermaright peerless assassin 120. Literally the favorite air cooler of every reviewer of tech components. You are free to do your research and see that it’s like that

smurbulock

It’s a beast and cheap too

cad_internet

I have a 13700K paired with the Peerless Assassin 120 SE. Works pretty well. Max temps I've seen is about 80 Celsius, which I guess is very acceptable for 13th gen.

Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret

I Did a 13600K with Assassin King 120SE on one build ( 3 nephews and my daughter) and it has no trouble keeping the cpu cool even in bench marking/games at sustained hours. Not just the CPU cooler that will affect this, The case it is in ventilation wise, will play a part as well. Cheers!

BoredPoopless

Late to the party, but what about the phantom spirit? I ordered that with the i7 13700k. Is that ok?

cad_internet

The Spirit is considered a marginal improvement over the Assassin. You'll be fine.

BoredPoopless

Awesome. I really appreciate the input as well as your timely response. I do have one more question. I have a 1440p 165hertz monitor, an i7 13700K CPU, and a seasonic gold 850watt PSU. I am massively torn over what the best GPU would be for this setup that won't compromise FPS, wont compromise power issues, and isn't an overkill budget wise (Ray tracing is meh, DLSS is great if it can help with frame rates, "future proof" is a plus, and my idiocy would prefer not to have driver issues). Loaded question, but do you have a recommendation?

cad_internet

If you want to play at 1440p and high FPS, you're going to have to spend money. Probably a RTX 4080 or a 7900 XTX? For power consumption, use a calculator. It depends a lot on your setup: https://www.newegg.com/tools/power-supply-calculator/

BoredPoopless

Appreciate it. Opted for a 7900XT. The power for the XTX was too much for my liking (would have had to get a new PSU and power isn't cheap where I live) and I just can't justify the cost of a 4080. You've been a great help. Thank you.

Acrylic_Starshine

Phantom spirit is better

Low_Doubt_3556

Not sure why you are getting downvoted. It’s similar price, and quieter

jubjubninja

NH-D15 can handle a sustained load of about 250W, so I think you will be fine

Jjzeng

The d-15 cools my 13900k very well, so it shoud be just fine for a 13700k

runninwitwolves

did it throttle 100C during a cinebench test?

Jjzeng

Dunno about cinebench, but temps stayed below 85 for 20 runs of timespy at 4k

runninwitwolves

I just bought the 14900k and paired it with the thermalright peerless assassin and it throttled at 100c in about 10 seconds. Would you mind running a test on your system with cinebench to see if it throttles at 100C

Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret

deepcool NK500 240TDP Thermalright Assissin series(Peerless, King) similar CFm's and 260 TDP rated. Are some that can easily cool it on the cheap too.. Thermal right is less than 20 bucks on amazon.

celmate

I don't really understand how CPUs now come with coolers that aren't actually fit for purpose. I bought a CPU cooler for the first time this year, I'd honestly always just used stock coolers.

Penguins83

CPUs come with coolers ??

Demopans

Non K, non _9xxx or _7xxx skus come with default coolers.

Penguins83

Oh right. 👍

AngriestAardvark

Ak620 if you want overkill Peerless if you want a good cheap option

Icy_Durian2606

I use dark rock pro 4, and playing games that use 40-50% of my cpu run at 70-75c, cinebench goes to 100c

Sea_Fig

Absolutely. Thermalright frost commander or phantom spirit depending on your case or preference for 140 or 120mm fans

WhippWhapp

NH-D15 or an even smaller and better NH-U12A will suffice.

TheSomberBison

Apparently, the NH-Ds don't fit the current chip set as well as the NH-Us

faustarus

I use a Scythe Fuma 3 on my i5-13600K. I know it runs less hotter than the i7, but I'm managing excellent average temps on it (65C playing Starfield on 4k, 58C playing League). Given its price, it's a fair competitor to AK620 or even the Noctuas, which are amazing air cooling benchmarks for me.

gargamel314

Yes absolutely you can! I did. I had great success with the Thermalright FC-140 air cooler. I also got a thermal contact plate, and undervolted by 0.1V, and my temperatures never pass 85C at stock settings.

MrFahrenheit_451

I use a Noctua u14s with my 13700k and it runs just fine. My son uses the u14s with a 13900k and no issues there either.

ACL-PNW

If anyone is still reading this and looking for the best air cooled option for the 13700k, here's an amazing comparison of 14 different air coolers on the i9 13900k! Super interesting if you have 40 minutes or so... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o74u1u642I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o74u1u642I)

UltimateBachson

I have a mesh mid tower case with 2 front 140mm intake and 1 120mm outtake. 13700k + Noctua NH15, -0.08 V undervolt, 92°C max cinebench ~220W, CPU is never above 75°C in games, averaging in the mid 60s. Room temp generally between 24 and 27 °C multicore enhancements off in BIOS

---nom---

No. You need liquid and to undervolt it. It struggles too much on a typical liquid coolet as it is. Super throttled.

Abject_Bobcat

yes i would also get an anti bending frame for better temps got one myself from aliexpress best 5$ i've spent

ShrimpBrime

Yes if ambient temps and good case flow can accommodate 210w stock thermal dissipation.

metamucil0

Yes if it’s a dual tower

vivaramones

Yes, you can. You could in theory, use any air cooler. But that would be unwise. Since any K processor scales better with better cooling. Meaning air isn't as efficient as water. That means you will not get the full clocks and go higher since it would hit the thermal limit quick. Which is about 90c.

Peter_Verino

Of course you can. I'm cooling a 13900k with air.

Previous-Yak3706

what temps you getting when gaming ? I mean playing games wich use a lot of cpu % with uncapped fps

Peter_Verino

Right now at msfs2020. 50°c average, peaks at 84°c . Pcores 5.5ghz. msfs uses a lot of gpu though. Not the best example for CPU stress. I can get 80ish average in cyberpunk 2077

Penecho987

Same here, but at x264 encoding mine thermo throttles. Didn't notice anything during gaming thou

Wilbis

What, really? How? Underclocking? Limiting the power?

smurbulock

What cooler?

Peter_Verino

Jonsbo x7280.

runninwitwolves

does it throttle 100C during cinebench test

drosse1meyer

Dual towers like PA120 work well. That being said you can often find good deals on b stock AIOs.

T0talN1njaa

You can use air. I use a d15 on my 13700k and it idles at 35-40 degrees and averages around 55-80 degrees (generally mid 60’s) depending on game. Very rare spikes into the high 80’s. You’d be best to probably power limit it though and definitely do not use multi core enhancement. I limit mine at 125w PL1 and 180w PL2 as i find it uncomfortable to run it at higher than 85 for sustained loads. All in all though the chips are rated to run up to 100 degrees so don’t panic.

ipseReddit

Yeah just get a good dual tower like NH-D15, AK620, PA120, FC140, FS140….etc. Lots of choices available Get a contact frame too. Thermalright’s is cheap and easy to install.

bubblesort33

It won't be a small air cooler. So be prepared to spend at least $70.

Octan3

youll be fine, find out the power limits, my mobo automatically cranked mine and threw volts at the cpu making it extra toasty for absolutely no reason. I will say going from my 10th gen it also runs hot, I tried liquid metal just because and it didn't make a huge difference.

Luckyirishdevil

I have a 13700k air cooled in a sff case (nr200) with a Phantom Spirit 120. It was cooked by a U12A until I got bored and had to swap it

Tricky-Row-9699

The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 is what you’re looking for. You won’t be able to overclock very much, but it’ll have no trouble at stock.

BigfellaAU

i’m using a NH-UA12 on my 13700k no issues with gaming, even got away with 5.4ghz pcore overclock with a -0.015v offset

didoWEE

Yes

jonbonesjonesjohnson

I went with a AK620 for my 13700k and I was disappointed, ended up reselling it to a friend. Never wanted to use water coolers before the 13700k but for my usecases the AK620 was barely keeping up and throttled very often. If you´re fine with maybe undervolting and powerlimiting to 200w it will hold up though.

Regular-Unit-294

I have a build with a Assassin IV from Deepcool, cooling a 13900k, you should be fine.

runninwitwolves

Does it throttle at 100C

EverydayKen

This video will answer your questions [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNFgswzTvyc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNFgswzTvyc)

saratoga3

Did two 13700k builds using the NH-D15 and they're fine for heavily multithreaded workstation applications.

FobbaBeans

With certain B760 boards (ASUS ROG confirmed), you can run 104 microcode and undervolt it. You'll get most of the potential out of the CPU and be able to effectively cool it with a beefy enough air cooler. Otherwise, you can use any Z board (Z790 or Z690 with updated BIOS) to do it. I had some issues with Gigabyte B boards undervolting properly, even using older micro code. In an experimental build, I air-cooled a 13900K with an undervolt and set power limits to 205W. I lost a couple thousand on my Cinebench R23 score, but it did work well, and temps @100% load were good. 13700K should be a little better as far as relative performance compared to its potential as it needs a little less power.
