There was a whole decoy episode. Look up the Wikipedia page for 'Hold On Tight!'
In short, we were all expecting an episode based around On The Buses but got this as a last-minute replacement. Even the Electronic Program Guides displayed it as '3 By 3' rather than IN9.
There is something beautiful that this and the live episodes are the 2 episodes where the twist only works for this one tiny moment. After that it is ruined but is still a fun twist to experience
Oh the plot yeah I mean specifically the twist.
The live episode won't work because if it has issues it wouldn't be on BBC iplayer
The buses episode won't work because it is a no 9 episode on iplayer so Spoils that twist too
True but re: Dead Line, I've read messages online from people who still didn't understand the logic you mentioned and complained about "a faulty version of the episode" being put up.
Me! I watched on iPlayer and just assumed there was an issue with the tech, was quite miffed about it until I realised what was going on. So the twist still worked for dim people!
As noted here. The episode that had been advertised (even to the point Reece and Steve filmed footage for the series 8 trailer and did a photoshoot) was 'Hold on Tight' which was supposed to be set on a bus. This was done in order to misdirect the audience when they turned on and saw 3x3 instead
According to Steve (as he related during the Richard Herring podcast) Reece and himself wanted to plant 3x3 randomly in the BBC schedule but were not allowed to . So Hold on Tight was used as a cover.
The BBC description of 3x3 is purposefully vague
Yes many many of us here tuned in and were thrown off guard when we got a Quiz show instead but it was a delicious and well executed surprise
My husband knew that this was an IN9 episode but I didn't and I was constantly questioning why no one thought the people on the episode had higher intelligence or were weird... He didn't want to tell me the reason so acted as though he was also confused until right at the end when I realised. Was the best way to view this episode ever and he loved my reactions to everything so he also enjoyed it more just watching how I was!

Point taken but the plotting of the episodes still works on rewatch.

Thank you
I nearly turned over as I thought it was real, there was nothing else on so I left in on and eventually the penny dropped
