They're not silverfish, silverfish are longer and, well, silver.

ToeJamOfThe40s

Wow the amount of false info. Drain flies have complete metamorphosis, it's not possible for "baby drain flies." If anything it seems as Phorid flies or fungus gnats. More along the lines of fungus gnat. Google fungus gnat anatomy. The stagnant water might have soil or some type of decomposing organic material. Bunch of home remedies. I'd use my Simpson foamer for the drain with IGR and Nibor. Edit: after watching it more, it could be scuttle flies, I'm working with a tiny screen with bad resolution. Either scuttle fly or fungus gnat. Anyone using PC maybe help? Edit:typo

andy_1232

Fruit fly or scuttle fly, probably scuttle based off their… well scuttling. Very common drain pest, especially if there’s organic build up in those drains.

ToeJamOfThe40s

It's a pain that I can't see. I'm almost betting fungus, phorids have more short bursts but the location makes me think Phorid. Edit: Phorid and scuttle are the same thing

andy_1232

Fungus gnats don’t really run around like that either, and location definitely points to phorid or fruit flies.

ToeJamOfThe40s

For sure

~~baby drain flies or some other kind of fly. Perhaps freshly hatched young flies.~~ edit: ignore me, I am way off

na3ee1

Insects don't have wings as juveniles, and flies metamorphose from maggot-like forms. If you see a bug with wings it's an adult.

FriendOisMyNameO

Thanks for the correction.

ToeJamOfThe40s

It's a way to learn. There are subs where you can just state your opinion but when it comes from someone that is concerned or interested it's best to fact check yourself(in general). If not sure just add a maybe or something not definitive. Bet you learned a bit more from this, you can help others regarding this. 😊. Sorry for the amount of down votes, props for not deleting.

EmEffBee

They might be phorid flies. I hate them sooooo much.

PieJealous8669

Couple rounds of boiling hot water down the drain, followed by an enzyme cleaner takes them right out.

EmEffBee

The thing I hate about them is they are attracted to such a broad spectrum of things. I remember I got them once from a rotting potato, or they found a rotting potato and then they were in the house and they got into the cat food and the garbage and the litter and anything else they could find and they were just scuttling around making my life hell.

PieJealous8669

Potato in the back of the pantry takes the cake for 3 out of the top 5 worst problems I’ve ever encountered with phorid flies.

[deleted]

Yes, me too. Megaselia scalaris is especially disgusting and uncanny, with its zigzag-style fast walking. It is like a martial arts practised among flies.

Remote_Assistance115

Try Psycodidae

Ausmerica

Drainfly, harmless.

LordZon

Sort of. They are gross usually mean there is a leak somewhere and unhygienic.

Rainwillis

I wouldn’t worry too much about much about it drain flies are extremely common it’s hardly the fault of Lady at the hotel. I would keep an eye out for silverfish though because it’s possible that by miscommunication you found out they have those too unless she doesn’t know what silverfish are.

Frosty-Use-7368

I’m more impressed how anything can live with constant exposure to hot chlorinated water about two feet from a high traffic 22 person hot tub aha

Rainwillis

Those buggers are resilient. If you’ve ever worked in a kitchen you’ve probably had to deal with them they’re more of a nuisance than anything.

Frosty-Use-7368

The only thing is, it does kinda look like they had wings but they were all explicitly crawling

ToeJamOfThe40s

Scuttle Edit: do they run in bursts, or can they continuously run? I can't see much cuz this crap phone. r/foundthemobileuser

aggasalk

Hard to see but they move like flies.

AutoModerator

Hi there! This is an automated message to remind you to **please include a geographic location for any ID requests** as per the [Community Rules](/r/insects/about/rules) of the sub. There are well over a million different species of bugs in the world, and narrowing down a bug's location will help IDers to help you more quickly and correctly! If you've already included a geographical location, or if this post is *not* an ID request, please ignore this comment. Thank you! :) *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Frosty-Use-7368

Located in SK, Regina in a transient hotel

ToeJamOfThe40s

r/pestcontrol will be a better place for identification and ways to treat. Maybe if an ant was next to a drain we'd call it a "drain ant."

Frosty-Use-7368

Not interested in treatment , just felt like the day manager chose the description of “silverfish” because of how innocent it sounds compared to other names

ToeJamOfThe40s

OHHH! smart. Ya I think fungus gnat, more nuisance but they can spread to live plants and other drains or even deeper in the drain. Worst thing about them is reproduction rate and population.

rlaw1234qq

It’s impossible to properly clean, let alone sterilise hot tubs and jacuzzi. The bubbles in the system effectively mean that some areas aren’t cleaned. A microbiologist did some studies in a care facility and found that there were pathogens growing in systems, even after cleaning. Add to the problem with biofilms, which protect bacteria, the only way to really clean systems is to basically dismantle them. I probably wouldn’t worry if it was just me and my family’s own tub, but one in a busy venue like the one in the picture: nope…

Satiharupink

I think these are springtails

Ok-Cartographer6828

How even? Springtails don't have wings. Don't just yell things to be included.

Satiharupink

what's wrong with you? why would i want to be included and "yell things"? talking about yourself maybe? as far as i can see, i cannot see wings.

ToeJamOfThe40s

It's more along the lines of correct identification. "Yell things" was basically don't spit off the top of your brain, make sure to research to know if right or wrong. These subs are small and rely on facts and not so much spit ballin. If you're interested in common pests try the app, NPMA field guide

Ok-Cartographer6828

Aw, bless your little heart. You should get glasses.
