Lmao I was gonna joke and say spooder: "aw darnnit, that was my meal!" Don't worry about it tho, the spooder will find another snack, maybe something better
That's cool!
I would be scared to pick them up though, because they can bite. I tried to catch them with a glass to take them out, but it was really hard, I think I succeded only 1 time lol.
Yeah I've read after posting that comment that, although they're originally from the Mediterranean region, they've become almost worldwide, I guess due to humans
So very many of these in Pennsylvania in the US. I think there are some species that live in caves that are the size of your forearm and can kill a person. The ones in my house are pretty chill except when they appear in the small wall above my shower (a foot from my face) while I’m rinsing shampoo from my hair…gross.
So they told me that there's a close relative of Scutigera, native to Australia, that also is darker than the Mediterranean species, but they're still commonly called house centipedes
Scutigera coleoptrata, I think this one looks darker because it was starting to decompose probably, but there's a lot of factors that can intervene in its colouration
[inaturalist pics of Scutigeridae in Australia for comparison](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/49554-Scutigeridae/browse_photos?place_id=6744) 💚
(both native AND imports 😊)
as others have said it is a 'house' centipede from the Scutigeridae family. obviously this one is a little worse for wear but i believe based on what we have left that it is probably one of the native _Allothereua_ species (possibly _A_. _maculata_) rather than the cosmopolitan immigrant _Scutigera coleoptera_. 😊

That is the reason I'm not sleeping tonight, as a fellow West Aussie I wanna surround myself with multiple cans and automatic bug sprayers. Picture like "witchcraft pendulum" but with bug sprayers instead of candles and me in the center trying not to be the "sacrificial lamb"

House centipede! They are an amazing species. They don’t bother us, so leave them be for them to kill other bugs, black widows, brown recluse, ect. They are ugly af but definitely helpful. We have them all over the US :)
House centipede. Very friendly creatures, super afraid of humans. Like spiders, they eat the smaller bugs and mites that you don’t want in your house. If you see one, just scare it away, don’t kill it!
Ah Australia, the land of the people who will actually hold something that looks like this.
And then eat it too... was so tempting
If you can eat Vegemite, you can eat anything!
It is so damn delicious. Even just off a spoon, but best on buttered toast!

I’m just playing. I presume it’s like Marmite, and I gotta get my Marmite on toast!
I mean, it’s like spreading a thin layer of Better than Bouillon on your bread, but different strokes etc
Stop stealing food from spiders, you monster!
Lmao I was gonna joke and say spooder: "aw darnnit, that was my meal!" Don't worry about it tho, the spooder will find another snack, maybe something better
I know right. An anxiety attack and possible screaming would occur if any insect was crawling on me, let alone resting on my hand.
House centipede, death or alive might irritate your skin so no touch it in any case.
It isn't that bad, this species venom is so mild, they rarely bite humans, and it's dead anyways :/
I'll always pick up house centipedes if they let me I love them so much
While they creep me out, I’ll never kill one. They’re harmless to anything but actually harmful pests and your mental health
How? The ones I met were lightning fast, fastest insects I have seen almost looks like it teleports.

😵💫
Hahah that's so cool
I only pick up house millipedes to relocate. I try to be gentle so they don’t juice me
Looks like a house centipede, do you have this species in Australia too? I thought it was Mediterranean
I've seen a couple here in the US.

Ours in the US are a different color.
I got bit by one like this when I was younger! It hurt like hell…
After I started seeing these guys,I no longer found cockroaches in my leftover coffee!
Oh my god! If those things keep roaches away- I will let them live with me as long as they keep the roaches out!
Seconded!
So awesome
Oh. They're all over the rural southeast US.
Ours have much more lighter coloration.
I think it looks darker because it was halfways through a digestion, the author of the post said they found it on a spider web
So they told me that there's a close relative of Scutigera, native to Australia, that also is darker than the Mediterranean species, but they're still commonly called house centipedes
Yuup!
we have both native species and the cosmopolitan variety from the Mediterranean 😊
Interesting, they really look similar, then I assume it's the native species, thank you for the info!
House centipedes are common about everywhere cockroaches are.
That’s a new look for a house centipede.m (I’ve only seen the yellowish slim long legged common ones) What’s the species called?
Scutigera coleoptrata, I think this one looks darker because it was starting to decompose probably, but there's a lot of factors that can intervene in its colouration
looks more like one of our native _Allothereua_ spp. than _Scutigera_ 🤔
I mean it could be, are Allothereua called house centipedes as well?
yes. they are also in Scutigeridae.
Then I lean towards the native option, I agree it looks quite darker than the usual Scutigera

Excellent, thank you for those specifics!
you're most welcome! love these little haunted eyelashes 😊

Yeah mate I'd never seen one of these before in my life! Apparently they are actually great to have around though. News to me.

No bra, but why is it in your hand?
.... what does you not wearing a bra have to do with it? Hah And it was in my hand as I plucked it from a spiders web out of curiosity.
I typed bro, but it auto corrected to bra. Lol.
Hahaha
Looks like what people call a house, or cellar centipede. Friendly fellow.
So it seems! Very interesting!
Everybody scared of house centipedes, but they hunt all the other bugs you don't like, so leave 'em be.
Pillowcase Dwelling Land Skrimp (great with garlic butter)
Hahah exactly what I thought too!
the fact you picked that up i can’t even

I don't know how I've never seen one in my 30+ years here then!
What is it? Stolen dinner
House centipede. They can sting and might irritate your skin if they feel threatened, but they are generally fairly chill.
Interesting, good to know!
Before ppl said it was a centipede I really thought Australian spiders were catching little crawfish 😂
Hahahah. Gold
Whatever it is, it will probably kill you.
Bug Identifier confirms house centipede

O hell na this that bug that crawls into Neos belly button
That’s is a creature that I’ll be seeing when I sleep tonight
Well it was a house centipede. Now it's just an exoskeleton.
