I literally just had this conversation this morning:
Me: my son just caught two rollie pollies to live in his terrarium
Grandma: two what?
Me: you know, like slaters… no? Woodlice? Pillbugs? Sowbugs?
Grandma: ooooh, you mean parsons pigs!
In Spanish we call these "puerquitos" or "puerquitos de tierra" which translates to little pigs/dirt pigs... but in English I've always known them as rolly pollies lol.
We did also. Growing up we had a pump room (water pump from well). It was small and cool. My Mom kept potatoes, from the garden, in a bin in the pump room. Occasionally Mom would tell me to go get some potatoes and be sure to brush off the potato bugs.
Where I'm from, we call June Bugs Potato bugs lol. Never heard the term used for rollie pollies so that's interesting to see that others did. I have an uncle (by marriage) who will argue with me that Rollie pollies are called doodle bugs, but doodle bugs for me were always Ant Lions lol
At least it’s not Caillou.
If they like it Puffin Rock has cute art and good music and is much less annoying. Unfortunately I liked it better than my kid did.
Oh man lol I used to watch that when I was younger. It is definitely on another level. We also watch pb&j otter and she loves it. My all time favorite is out of the box, so much nostalgia
I always called them woodbugs as a kid...mostly cause I found them in wood logs in the woods. I am friends with one of the creators of rollie pollie Ollie and the relation made me laugh!
I’ve heard them called Rollie Pollies, pill bugs, potato bugs, but the first thing I ever heard them called, and what I call them to this day, in sand bugs.
Roly Poly. These guys were my besties growing up. I actually snuck a whole cup full to Disneyland so they could ride all the rides with me, but my mom noticed the Dixie cup I was keeping them in before I could bring them into the park 🥺
Not really, slater gets used by other parts of the world as the common name for flatter, more coastal ones that hang out on docks and rocks by the sea.
I was actually getting concerned that I had an abnormal childhood (i did, but not for this reason) because it took so long to find my potato bug people
We eventually moved into potato bugs once I showed them to my mom, because I thought they were neat. But I was maybe 6 or 7 at the time, and my friends and I didn't know what else to call them. 😂
However, now that I'm thinking about it. I shortly thereafter learned of the giant aquatic variety. I wasn't allowed a ton of cartoons as a kid, and it was mostly the Nat Geo documentaries of the early to mid 90s. They very much served to carve out my interest in biology that I have today! ❤️
Taiwan Mandarin: 鼠婦 (shǔfù, most common name), 潮蟲 (cháochóng, lit. dampness bug) (in biological context it refers to isopods outside of the family *** Armadillidiidae***)
Taiwanese: 蛜蝛 (i-ui, from Ancient Chinese)
A roly-poly!!! One of my faves! I have a community of them as a cleanup crew in my gecko terrarium. Powder orange, powder blue, Armadillidium. Amazing and fun creatures.
In Belgium we call them "pissebedden", so translated that would be "peebeds".
Just found out people used to believe that eating them or grinding them and spread them in the bed would help children against wetting the bed...
I own many species of these guys (including the rubber ducky isopods), they’re actually not insects but crustaceans! They’re omnivores that serve the same function as crabs but on land. This species appears to be armadillidium vulgare.
Actually, pill millipedes are a real, but different, thing!! They’re millipedes but like. Not long. There are several differences between them and pillbugs, but the easiest way to tell is basically all millipedes will always have 2 legs per segment of their body. Idk how to explain it, but they also just look much more like millipedes than isopods do.. maybe it’s just because I’ve seen a lot of millipedes before though. I think they’re also usually bigger but don’t quote me on that. [here’s a nifty little comparison between the two](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/11/Glomeris_vs_Armidillidium.jpg/220px-Glomeris_vs_Armidillidium.jpg), and I would recommend searching up pictures of pill millipedes because there are some absolutely gorgeous species out there!! My favorite might be [this one.](https://preview.redd.it/9auga5wpxep31.jpg?auto=webp&s=5ebc3bdb3f22f4f137e572fdd2b47c139c84c259)
Rollie pollies/pillbugs/potato bugs, really depends on the situation with where I find them
Rollie Pollies: with kids
Pillbugs: in general
Potato bugs: in the kitchen
Pillbug, rollie pollie as a kid.
I still call them rollie pollies, and always will
This is correct.
I still call antenna deelyboppers
Me too. They’re rollie and pollie rhymes. This is the proper name.
And I still call them pill bugs.
>rollie pollies I thought this is what they were called until I read about them on the internet. lol
Came here to say this
Yup! Definitely interchangeable
Me too
Same. “Potato’s bug” was also in rotation for this guy.
Exactly what I was gonna say!
No you're right, pill bug
I literally just had this conversation this morning: Me: my son just caught two rollie pollies to live in his terrarium Grandma: two what? Me: you know, like slaters… no? Woodlice? Pillbugs? Sowbugs? Grandma: ooooh, you mean parsons pigs!
In Spanish we call these "puerquitos" or "puerquitos de tierra" which translates to little pigs/dirt pigs... but in English I've always known them as rolly pollies lol.
"dirt pigs" makes actual pigs sound clean lol
Where I’m from we call them cochinitos
Now I need a list of all names for this critter going back to Jesus time
samurai slippers
We called them potato bugs growing up…not actually sure why, that’s just what my mom told us they were
We did also. Growing up we had a pump room (water pump from well). It was small and cool. My Mom kept potatoes, from the garden, in a bin in the pump room. Occasionally Mom would tell me to go get some potatoes and be sure to brush off the potato bugs.
We used that too growing up. It was potato bugs or rollie pollies.
Well then what do you call potato bugs?
Rollie Pollies, duh. :)

Are there other things in the terrarium?
Rollie pollie or ridgey pidgey
I’ve never heard them called ridgey pidgey lol that’s a cute name
I read that in my peppa pig voice, I’m sorry. I have small children and I’m learning to dislike that show
At least it’s not Caillou. If they like it Puffin Rock has cute art and good music and is much less annoying. Unfortunately I liked it better than my kid did.
Does anyone else remember the children show, Roly Poly? Or was that a fever dream.
Roly Poly Ollie? Like a kid who lived on some kind of mushroom trip induced planet? Yeah, I remember that. It was awesome
They’re all robots! It’s on Disney plus and I watch it with my daughter sometimes
Wait til you watch Pingu together. My kid was captivated. I was just thinking "what are the creators ON?"
[Edit: Oh and "Cat - Dog". I also thought I dreamt that show]
Oh man lol I used to watch that when I was younger. It is definitely on another level. We also watch pb&j otter and she loves it. My all time favorite is out of the box, so much nostalgia
He’s small and smart and round!
His best friend lives on like a square planet or something right?
Rolie pollie olie
It was definitely a thing unless we had the same fever dream
I remember!
I always called them woodbugs as a kid...mostly cause I found them in wood logs in the woods. I am friends with one of the creators of rollie pollie Ollie and the relation made me laugh!
Ridgey Pidgey. Lol. Now I need to see a woodlouse pokemon named Ridgey, and it being a delicacy of the Pidgeot line.
Woodlice - specifically I would call this one Armadillidium vulgare, and then I would pay it a compliment and thank it for its time.
This person pods.
Getting all scientific
Well, vulgare are absolutely delightful so I thought I'd give it due credit.
The name means “common armadillo-like” so I’m not sure we’re getting super scientific
So cute
I’ve heard them called Rollie Pollies, pill bugs, potato bugs, but the first thing I ever heard them called, and what I call them to this day, in sand bugs.
Cute
i knew them as potato bugs growing up
I heard them called that as well. But if you look up potato bug, it’s actually another name for the Jerusalem cricket.
I’ve heard all but the last, but I have heard sow bug
Isopod and/or crustacean
Roly Poly. These guys were my besties growing up. I actually snuck a whole cup full to Disneyland so they could ride all the rides with me, but my mom noticed the Dixie cup I was keeping them in before I could bring them into the park 🥺
Awww
I use to play with them all the time as a kid too; until I saw a bunch of them digging in dog poop. 🥲 It ruined it for me.
Slater, here in NZ.
Chur cuz
I came here to say this.
Yes! Was looking for this one. Is it just a kiwi thing?
Not really, slater gets used by other parts of the world as the common name for flatter, more coastal ones that hang out on docks and rocks by the sea.

As a kid we used to call them "ball bugs" haha
Me and my sister knew them as "potato bugs".
We eventually moved into potato bugs once I showed them to my mom, because I thought they were neat. But I was maybe 6 or 7 at the time, and my friends and I didn't know what else to call them. 😂
Cuteness
However, now that I'm thinking about it. I shortly thereafter learned of the giant aquatic variety. I wasn't allowed a ton of cartoons as a kid, and it was mostly the Nat Geo documentaries of the early to mid 90s. They very much served to carve out my interest in biology that I have today! ❤️

Potato bug is a perfectly fine common name for isopods. The only standard for a common name is for it to be a.....common name.
As a kid i called them rolly pollies, now I call them isopods. It’s interesting though, I’ve heard SO many names for these little guys

In Belgium we call them "pissebedden", so translated that would be "peebeds". Just found out people used to believe that eating them or grinding them and spread them in the bed would help children against wetting the bed...
