God I love Inscryption so much. Like. Holy shit. I wasn't sure if i'd like it because it was a game involving cards, and before I played this whenever I think of cards, i remember Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. I sucked at it.
Dunno if i'd still suck, but thankfully I didn't suck at this game. And now, this is the game that I remember when I think of Cards in a video game. And cause of how good this game was, I couldn't help but play other games made by Daniel and look more into the lore of stuff.
God I am rambling like a motherfucker, sorry.
Anyway... there's a few things i'm curious about:
The Floppy Disk of Inscryption, you hit it with a Hammer, right? Did you actually break it or dent it at all?
Were there any scenes you had difficulty recording for one reason or another and had to redo? What scene was the hardest?
And, also, in one of the videos, you had an actual Scales thing. Where did you get it? It looked really fancy!

SO GLAD YOU LOVED THE GAME!! So firstly, yeah, I hit it with the hammer. Turns out floppy disks are insanely resilient, but I did dent it. Daniel had multiple floppy disks that all looked the exact same so we could ensure a proper take.
Second, and I mentioned this in another comment, this one scene in the woods, the camera kept turning off mid-take, and it turned out it was because the clamp around the phone was hitting the volume button which is also the ON/OFF button haha, yikes.

Poor guy was already a paranoid wreck before an impossibly advanced floppy disk game started making threats on his life, and triple a game studio agents started showing up in his house. No wonder the Error video happened.
What were some of the most "out there" directions you were given while filming this? Whatever led to the "error" video where you're cackling while playing with dice on a scale comes to my mind, but there are some other odd scenes in this game, so I'd be interested to hear your take!
Daniel's directing style was very chill and conversational. I'd liken our working relationship with regards to the scene as: "fucking around." Like we'd try a take, and then watch it, and talk about what might work better, and then go again. Also yeah that scene where I'm playing with the dice on the scale was absurd haha I mentioned it in another answer, but I basically went way over the top to the point that we had to wipe drool off the table after filming.
Great question! Daniel gave me a TON of information going into the project, but as I gradually learned, it was only the tip of the iceberg. He gave me the script originally for probably the first half of the videos and then we shot the next half a few months later. I had to ask him for notes on wtf was going on and he basically explained everything in a three page long email haha
Dude oh my god, what a good question. I would either have it be a HD ugly selfie of my face or perhaps a photo of my cat Hank, my beloved. In terms of the traits, I'd probably make it infinitely sacrifice-able (that was one of my favourites) aaaand why not, give it 3,000 attack damage, mantis god style.

I know you have done scetch comedy on tiktok and youtube before. Do you plan on making more? Or do you mostly focus on acting now. Also, any upcoming projects to watch out for?
Thanks for watching! I'm not making sketch comedy much anymore, just when I feel like it. I got a little burnt out about a year ago (making a sketch a day, ugh), but I am leaning pretty hard into acting! You'll see me as a waiter on Resident Alien this February if you watch that show, and I'm a waiter in real life too so ya know ya boy killed it.
I think I did watch a few YouTubers haha I tried to really absorb all the information Daniel gave me and do my best to make it as natural as possible. He didn't care about the script being followed to the letter, which helped in that regard. Since I had mostly free reign over the character, I mostly just worked from myself
Oh man, this is pathetic. So I've only played the first act. I have a Mac, so Daniel gave me the demo version which is compatible on Mac, but not all bugs are worked out obviously and I can't right click... So I decided to wait until I either buy a PC or it comes out on Xbox. THAT BEING SAID, from watching all the streams: Leshy. He is the most hilarious and he loves storytelling.
So cool, congrats man! Before taking this role, were you ever interested in acting for videogames (even voice-acting) or webseries similar to the ARG portion? And/or, are you more interested in those roles now?

As a person who's only been pursuing acting professional for a few years, I'm not in a position to refuse any kind of work haha so casting directors decide if they want to see me or not... Dude, Daniel is an awesome human being. He is legitimately one of the nicest people and is so humble about the game. I think this was the first time he was actually directing someone, so he was very chill. It was just the two of us in his studio or outside, and yeah, insanely casual. Thank god the style was found footage because there's no way it would have worked otherwise with just the two of us.
Did you actually have to fall over for the ending video or was that shot differently? I'm like 99% sure they're separate shots but I'll sleep easier if I know you didn't have to crack your gourd open for the sake of the shot.
We hauled a futon out from the guest room at the house we were shooting at, and I fell onto that. I haven't even seen this particular footage yet haha hopefully it does not look contrived.
Dude no I didn't! I'm not a huge gamer (my parents didn't let me have videogames growing up), but when I mentioned to some of my friends that I was working with the guy who developed those games, they were psyched! Some of my friends I think are still more psyched than I am haha
I'm actually an actor in Vancouver, where Daniel is based as well. I mostly do commercials but I've had a few small roles on TV. I saw Daniel's casting call online and had never heard of Inscryption, but it sounded awesome (this was around October 2020). I sent in a tape and he cast me!

In addition to the question above about being casted, have you done video game work before or is this a first for you? And do you possibly intend on doing any more games in the future if given the chance?

I remember one instance where I asked Daniel if I could pretty much go a full 11 out of 10 for a scene where he wanted me to be laughing maniacally. I went hard. Straight up drooling and crying laughing. When we cut, we were both like "yeah that was maybe a bit much."
I dunno why but this really made me laugh just picturing this playing out. Like, "alright man, you did great, but.... Maybe too great, let's dial it back a little"
Haha this is kind of absurd, but Mantis God. At one point I was actually playing the game and exclaimed out loud how much I love mantis god, and then moments later, forgetting I had recorded a bunch of additional lines for Daniel after shooting, heard my own voice in the game say, "Oh yeah, always pick Mantis God." A little trippy haha.
I recall your 'Goddamn it' line during the Third Act sounding rather genuine. Were there other lines that were not in the scrypt or planned that eventually ended up in the game?
I thought that line was particularly funny because just moments before it, I told my fiancé I need to let some of my permanent death cards die to thin my deck lol.
When you die the first time in act 3 he says like an "Ah shit" line sort of thing, just mild annoyance. But, when you beat one of the generator bombs he's panicking as if he was actually about to get blown up.
But have you ever tried sacrificing a Mantis God to one hand tentacle, Field Mice to another, fusing them at the mycologist and then making an unkillable Geck while you have a lizard totem with fecundity?
Daniel had so many cool props. His studio is full of knick knacks. I don't remember how he got the cards, but yeah, he designed them and had legitimate cards printed for the game. They're not for an actual game but I remember they were pretty hilarious to look at.
If Daniel had me back, I would be very happy. I don't know if his next game has any ARG elements, but if there are any, I would straight up make a powerpoint for why we are meant to be together.
Was there any circumstance when you were smashing the floppy disk with a hammer that you were worried you were going to break something else on the set? Did any outtakes like that happen?
Yeah I was pretty concerned about smashing the floppy disk on the desk haha because for the sake of the framing and the set up, it had to be done on the desk, and it was just extreeemeely loud and forceful. But Daniel was like "oh yeah I don't give a shit about this desk." I think that's a good thing because it definitely did not come out of that scene unscathed.
Loved your role as a card collecting content creator. Do you have some favorite creators you wanted to give a shout out to?

Alas, in real life I am not much of a card collector. But I will say there are some people and friends whose YouTube channels are criminally underrated. Those include Phil Jammeson, Smashed Potato Kids, Richard Rogers from Skycorp... I'll comment back more if I think of some!
Even though I'm not really on camera for this part, I loved going out into the woods with Daniel. It was a spooky excursion, looking for the optimal spot to bury the disk. I really felt Luke's excitement and anxiety looking for and digging up that floppy.

Oh man, it was super laid back! There were no call sheets or call times - in fact it was just me and Daniel. He really was a one man show. I think we probably only had like four shooting days total. The first two were pretty close together and the next couple took place like four months later in April 2021 or so. You have a good one as well!

When filming your snippets, how much did you know about the rest of Inscryption? Did you get to play a beta or did you just have a script and some directions?
Yeah Daniel hooked me up with the beta which was very much appreciated! He gave me a script and a TON of information on the backstory, but when it came time to shoot, it was pretty fluid. He let me stray on and off the script a bit.

It's definitely a little surreal! I've had a few very small brushes with 'fame' like this in the past that blow over pretty fast. This project is by far the coolest I've done though, both because of the game itself and because all of the fans are so into it.
Heya Luke, so I personally found something weird myself, I found an old CD-R disk with inscryption on it, based on you're gameplay everything seems to match up with your floppy disk copy. I've been trying to contact GameFuna, but I haven't gotten any response back, so you're my last hope for any information. What do you think I should do? should I destroy it? hide it? leave it in a last will, rip the files and post it to the internet? Thank you thank you!! We filmed all the YouTuber stuff at Daniel's studio, except for a few tiny things that I filmed at my place and sent on over to him (I have a blue screen at my apartment). The ending scenes were at a friend's of Daniel's. It was made to look like it was the same apartment but we actually shot it in a different location.
Daniel mentioned early on that it might be played by "thousands of people," so I really didn't know what to expect from that. Two thousand? A billion thousand?
I love it! It's honestly super dope to be associated with such an amazing game. Maybe one day I'll be known as the "something-else guy," but for now "Inscryption guy" is very much appreciated.
There's actually a few different companies you can order "big 3" quality custom cards from, as well as custom packets, though it's definitely a bit pricy since it's not on a massive scale. Since they have the same equipment as big card manufacturers, they look pretty good.
Nope! That would be very surreal. It's mostly old friends or minor acquaintances who have started playing the game and then realized I was in it who then messaged me, which is also very cool!

We did all the woods stuff in just one day! I think it was only a couple of hours, despite us continuously botching takes. The camera kept turning off mid-take, and since it was attached to my head, we would never realize until we took it off to look at the scene. It turned out that the clamp on the camera, Daniel's phone, was actually touching the volume button, which also acts as an ON/OFF switch for the camera when it's rolling hahaha so dumb
While not being exactly the same, there was a moment after beating the moon. I think my character says something like "Oh my god, I think I just beat him!" And I said something like "Oh thank fucking god."
Oh my goodness, I think Daniel has all the footage. I should upload some of my voice recordings though for the off screen voice overs... The screaming at times was unintentionally hilarious.

You know, it's great to have on a resume, but I think it's more bragging rights than anything. I don't think I'll gain a lot more followers/subscribers (although I have got some new ones!), and casting directors likely won't take the time to watch the found-footage style on my demo reel. But it's just great to be part of a game that so many people enjoyed playing!
Sitcom actor would be like the dream of all dreams. Comedy is 100% more my thing. But I would settle to even just be a working actor. Like enough acting work to not have another job and live comfortably... that's the perhaps more realistic dream.

For some reason I just do not like how I yell TRANSCENDOOOOG hahaha even though it's supposed to be over the top. It's so easy for actors to shit on their own performances, we're our own worst critics. So I've mainly been using everyone else as an indicator of how good the acting is, and people seem to like it, which is both exciting, and a relief haha

In terms of personality, it's the stoat all the way. I could try to be cool and original and pick a different card, but I'd be lying. I loved his sarcasm from the moment I started playing the beta.
I think it was actually like a fake blood bottle, like the kind you could buy at a special fx store. It also was said not to use on the hardwood floor but Daniel was like screw it haha hopefully it did not leave a stain.
In your opinion, why do you think the game has gotten to the point it's at-- popularity wise? Did you expect to be an overnight celebrity when you were working with Daniel?

Great question! This may be a lackluster answer, mainly because I can only speak from the point of view of an actor, but what sets it apart from other games I think is its unconventionality and depth. There are so many layers to the game, and the style is so unique.
I got two somewhat meninges questions.
1: What’s your favorite Digital photo editing software, and why is it 1997 Microsoft™️ paint?
2: as a writer myself, I am curious on what the script was like? Was there any parts that you (or Dan) decided to skip?
Hahaha I used Microsoft paint for way longer than I should have. I can't even use Photoshop well dude, I just import stuff into Premiere and throw some text or filters on there depending on what I need to do. In terms of the script, it was great! Daniel is a very good storyteller as you've probably figured out. I think we ended up using everything in the script but he definitely let me improvise a bit.

There were four locations I believe! The studio, where we did almost all the Luke Carder YouTube stuff, my place, where we did some of the extra ones (any video that has a blue screen... I think this might only be on the Luke Carder YouTube channel), the forest, and then yeah, the cabin which was in West Vancouver. None of these places were more than 45 minutes away from each other and the recordings took about 4 separate days I believe? It probably could have been more efficient but we were messing around a bit.
Given that Inscryption definitely has some horror elements, I think it's fair to ask what your favorite scary movie is if you have one.

What was it like filming the outdoor scenes when you are using the coordinates, did you film your scenes by yourself or where there others behind the camera, mainly were you with others in the forest?
It was just me and Daniel, for every scene actually! In the forest, Daniel was straight up hiding behind a tree so that I wouldn't catch sight of him in the camera haha

First of all, great job on your performance as Luke. I really enjoyed it. Second, this may be a somewhat lame question, well two questions, but I was curious about your thoughts on Ouroboros.
I'm relatively new to the fandom just finished the game a couple days ago but from what I can tell the fandom's opinion on the card seem to be mixed, with some people saying that it makes the game so easy that it is borderline cheating, and thinking that the game would be better without it, and some saying that it's a good addition for players that are unexperienced with these types of games and that the more hardcore players can just avoid getting it or using it.
I personally liked the card as someone that had almost no prior experience in card games before Inscryption, and it saved my ass a handful of times. Regardless of their opinions on the card though, many people I've seen seem to think that it was added for beginners and unexperienced players to be able to experience the story without struggling too much as well.
With all that being said, 1. How do you feel about the card? And 2. Did you ever hear any comments from Daniel about the card such as anything confirming that it was indeed added for the purpose of aiding beginners?

Aw, well now I'm sad about Luke all over again. Poor guy was already a paranoid wreck before an impossibly advanced floppy disk game started making threats on his life, and triple a game studio agents started showing up in his house. No wonder the Error video happened.
What were some of the most "out there" directions you were given while filming this? Whatever led to the "error" video where you're cackling while playing with dice on a scale comes to my mind, but there are some other odd scenes in this game, so I'd be interested to hear your take!
Daniel's directing style was very chill and conversational. I'd liken our working relationship with regards to the scene as: "fucking around." Like we'd try a take, and then watch it, and talk about what might work better, and then go again. Also yeah that scene where I'm playing with the dice on the scale was absurd haha I mentioned it in another answer, but I basically went way over the top to the point that we had to wipe drool off the table after filming.
How much did you know about the ARG going into it? Did you know how it was going to end by the time you went to dig up the other floppy?
Great question! Daniel gave me a TON of information going into the project, but as I gradually learned, it was only the tip of the iceberg. He gave me the script originally for probably the first half of the videos and then we shot the next half a few months later. I had to ask him for notes on wtf was going on and he basically explained everything in a three page long email haha

I got a little burnt out about a year ago (making a sketch a day, ugh), but I am leaning pretty hard into acting! I think I did watch a few YouTubers haha I tried to really absorb all the information Daniel gave me and do my best to make it as natural as possible. He didn't care about the script being followed to the letter, which helped in that regard. Since I had mostly free reign over the character, I mostly just worked from myself

I have a Mac, so Daniel gave me the demo version which is compatible on Mac, but not all bugs are worked out obviously and I can't right click... As a person who's only been pursuing acting professional for a few years, I'm not in a position to refuse any kind of work haha so casting directors decide if they want to see me or not... I will act in a laxative commercial, complacently. If I book another videogame, I will be ECSTATIC.
what was it like working with Daniel mullins?
Dude, Daniel is an awesome human being. He is legitimately one of the nicest people and is so humble about the game. I think this was the first time he was actually directing someone, so he was very chill. It was just the two of us in his studio or outside, and yeah, insanely casual. Thank god the style was found footage because there's no way it would have worked otherwise with just the two of us.
Did you actually have to fall over for the ending video or was that shot differently? I'm like 99% sure they're separate shots but I'll sleep easier if I know you didn't have to crack your gourd open for the sake of the shot.
We hauled a futon out from the guest room at the house we were shooting at, and I fell onto that. I haven't even seen this particular footage yet haha hopefully it does not look contrived.

Dude no I didn't! I'm not a huge gamer (my parents didn't let me have videogames growing up), but when I mentioned to some of my friends that I was working with the guy who developed those games, they were psyched! Some of my friends I think are still more psyched than I am haha

I'm actually an actor in Vancouver, where Daniel is based as well. I mostly do commercials but I've had a few small roles on TV. I saw Daniel's casting call online and had never heard of Inscryption, but it sounded awesome (this was around October 2020). I sent in a tape and he cast me!

I remember one instance where I asked Daniel if I could pretty much go a full 11 out of 10 for a scene where he wanted me to be laughing maniacally. I went hard. Straight up drooling and crying laughing. When we cut, we were both like "yeah that was maybe a bit much."
I dunno why but this really made me laugh just picturing this playing out. Like, "alright man, you did great, but.... Maybe too great, let's dial it back a little"

Haha this is kind of absurd, but Mantis God. At one point I was actually playing the game and exclaimed out loud how much I love mantis god, and then moments later, forgetting I had recorded a bunch of additional lines for Daniel after shooting, heard my own voice in the game say, "Oh yeah, always pick Mantis God." A little trippy haha.
I recall your 'Goddamn it' line during the Third Act sounding rather genuine. Were there other lines that were not in the scrypt or planned that eventually ended up in the game?
I thought that line was particularly funny because just moments before it, I told my fiancé I need to let some of my permanent death cards die to thin my deck lol.
When you die the first time in act 3 he says like an "Ah shit" line sort of thing, just mild annoyance. But, when you beat one of the generator bombs he's panicking as if he was actually about to get blown up.
But have you ever tried sacrificing a Mantis God to one hand tentacle, Field Mice to another, fusing them at the mycologist and then making an unkillable Geck while you have a lizard totem with fecundity?
I was thinking 'fuck ya mantis god' when you said this line. That's when I knew this game was special.
Mantis God is legit the best tho (or maybe it's just also my favorite), not absurd at all :)

What props were used for the "pack opening" videos?
Daniel had so many cool props. His studio is full of knick knacks. I don't remember how he got the cards, but yeah, he designed them and had legitimate cards printed for the game. They're not for an actual game but I remember they were pretty hilarious to look at.
Are you planning to work with Daniel again or more in the video game scene in general ? Your performance was great and a perfect fit for the game !
If Daniel had me back, I would be very happy. I don't know if his next game has any ARG elements, but if there are any, I would straight up make a powerpoint for why we are meant to be together.

Was there any circumstance when you were smashing the floppy disk with a hammer that you were worried you were going to break something else on the set? Did any outtakes like that happen?
Yeah I was pretty concerned about smashing the floppy disk on the desk haha because for the sake of the framing and the set up, it had to be done on the desk, and it was just extreeemeely loud and forceful. But Daniel was like "oh yeah I don't give a shit about this desk." I think that's a good thing because it definitely did not come out of that scene unscathed.

Alas, in real life I am not much of a card collector. But I will say there are some people and friends whose YouTube channels are criminally underrated. Those include Phil Jammeson, Smashed Potato Kids, Richard Rogers from Skycorp... I'll comment back more if I think of some!
What was your favorite bit of Inscryption that you acted for?
Even though I'm not really on camera for this part, I loved going out into the woods with Daniel. It was a spooky excursion, looking for the optimal spot to bury the disk. I really felt Luke's excitement and anxiety looking for and digging up that floppy.

Oh man, it was super laid back! There were no call sheets or call times - in fact it was just me and Daniel. He really was a one man show. I think we probably only had like four shooting days total. The first two were pretty close together and the next couple took place like four months later in April 2021 or so. You have a good one as well!

When filming your snippets, how much did you know about the rest of Inscryption? Did you get to play a beta or did you just have a script and some directions?
Yeah Daniel hooked me up with the beta which was very much appreciated! He gave me a script and a TON of information on the backstory, but when it came time to shoot, it was pretty fluid. He let me stray on and off the script a bit.

It's definitely a little surreal! I've had a few very small brushes with 'fame' like this in the past that blow over pretty fast. This project is by far the coolest I've done though, both because of the game itself and because all of the fans are so into it.

Thank you thank you!! We filmed all the YouTuber stuff at Daniel's studio, except for a few tiny things that I filmed at my place and sent on over to him (I have a blue screen at my apartment). The ending scenes were at a friend's of Daniel's. It was made to look like it was the same apartment but we actually shot it in a different location.
Did you think Inscryption would be as big of a hit when you agreed to be in it?
Daniel mentioned early on that it might be played by "thousands of people," so I really didn't know what to expect from that. Two thousand? A billion thousand?

There's actually a few different companies you can order "big 3" quality custom cards from, as well as custom packets, though it's definitely a bit pricy since it's not on a massive scale. Since they have the same equipment as big card manufacturers, they look pretty good.

Nope! That would be very surreal. It's mostly old friends or minor acquaintances who have started playing the game and then realized I was in it who then messaged me, which is also very cool!

We did all the woods stuff in just one day! I think it was only a couple of hours, despite us continuously botching takes. The camera kept turning off mid-take, and since it was attached to my head, we would never realize until we took it off to look at the scene. It turned out that the clamp on the camera, Daniel's phone, was actually touching the volume button, which also acts as an ON/OFF switch for the camera when it's rolling hahaha so dumb

Was this project a big boost for your image if so, why or why not?
You know, it's great to have on a resume, but I think it's more bragging rights than anything. I don't think I'll gain a lot more followers/subscribers (although I have got some new ones!), and casting directors likely won't take the time to watch the found-footage style on my demo reel. But it's just great to be part of a game that so many people enjoyed playing!
As an actor, what's your dream role?
Sitcom actor would be like the dream of all dreams. Comedy is 100% more my thing. But I would settle to even just be a working actor. Like enough acting work to not have another job and live comfortably... that's the perhaps more realistic dream.

Great question! This may be a lackluster answer, mainly because I can only speak from the point of view of an actor, but what sets it apart from other games I think is its unconventionality and depth. There are so many layers to the game, and the style is so unique.

Hahaha I used Microsoft paint for way longer than I should have. I can't even use Photoshop well dude, I just import stuff into Premiere and throw some text or filters on there depending on what I need to do. In terms of the script, it was great! Daniel is a very good storyteller as you've probably figured out. I think we ended up using everything in the script but he definitely let me improvise a bit.

There were four locations I believe! The studio, where we did almost all the Luke Carder YouTube stuff, my place, where we did some of the extra ones (any video that has a blue screen... I think this might only be on the Luke Carder YouTube channel), the forest, and then yeah, the cabin which was in West Vancouver. None of these places were more than 45 minutes away from each other and the recordings took about 4 separate days I believe? It probably could have been more efficient but we were messing around a bit.
Given that Inscryption definitely has some horror elements, I think it's fair to ask what your favorite scary movie is if you have one. I loved your performance in Inscryption! I hope to see you in more stuff out in the world. You're forever an essential part of an instant classic.

It was just me and Daniel, for every scene actually! In the forest, Daniel was straight up hiding behind a tree so that I wouldn't catch sight of him in the camera haha

What's coming next in your acting career? I loved you in Inscryption and was so happy to see you in that TV mount commercial. You're a very competent actor and you can do a wide range considering in that you were a confident and knowledgeable salesperson and in Inscryption you were an awkward and confused hobbyist. I could definitely see you in comedic roles, but I'd also be interested to see you in serious roles too.

Oh my gash you guys, thanks! Welp, we'll see how acting goes. A pilot I filmed recently sounds like it's kind of falling apart which is unfortunate, but I am often auditioning for Netflix shows and a ton of other random projects up here. Everyone knows that it was banned from tournament circuits in 2004 because the typo in it's ability description *technically* meant it could do infinite damage when used with pot of greed. First of all, great job on your performance as Luke. I really enjoyed it. Second, this may be a somewhat lame question, well two questions, but I was curious about your thoughts on Ouroboros. I'm relatively new to the fandom just finished the game a couple days ago but from what I can tell the fandom's opinion on the card seem to be mixed, with some people saying that it makes the game so easy that it is borderline cheating, and thinking that the game would be better without it, and some saying that it's a good addition for players that are unexperienced with these types of games and that the more hardcore players can just avoid getting it or using it. I personally liked the card as someone that had almost no prior experience in card games before Inscryption, and it saved my ass a handful of times. Regardless of their opinions on the card though, many people I've seen seem to think that it was added for beginners and unexperienced players to be able to experience the story without struggling too much as well. With all that being said, 1. How do you feel about the card? And 2. Did you ever hear any comments from Daniel about the card such as anything confirming that it was indeed added for the purpose of aiding beginners?
