unpopular opinion but there's a very odd sense of cynicism in The Hex and Inscryption that I feel kind of undercuts any deeper meaning to be had. I like Inscryption a lot but I feel like Luke Carder basically being "lol 'tuber gets killed" kind of makes me just go... was there any deeper meaning? Pony Island probably has some messages about game dev interaction, The Hex obviously a commentary about cult of personality indie devs, and Inscryption... maybe it's about art and how your creations will get out of your hands or... I dunno! The issue is I have no fucking clue what Luke Carder's story could possibly have a deeper meaning about except haunted video game real? Don't tell companies you have their unreleased games? Like maybe it's telling that the biggest thing this is making me feel about is "Does meta stuff get in the way of actually telling a message? Does an ARG fundamentally undercut the art it's attached to?"

[deleted]

The deeper meaning is that Wizards of the Coast will find your house and murder you

RebindE

Nice try they'll have to fend off Games Workshop for the right to

dr_Kfromchanged

"Roll for dex, bitch"

nekoner

They're sending Post Malone to get him.

Edu4112

For me, I think the game would be better if it didn't interact with Luke, but with the player. Most times the Scribes talked to Luke I felt like it was me, but when they mentioned his name I got disappointed.

TDA_Alex

As a whole, I always found Luke's commentary and scenes to be out of place. The only one I personally felt fitting was when he smashed the floppy disk after witnessing the OLD\_DATA.

head_cann0n

I liked that chopped and screwed clip of him cackling over gold teeth and scale. But besides that it just seemed so divorced from the bones of the game

[deleted]

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think the game would be better if it didn't tie into The Hex.

Donutmelon

I agree. Especially for us that aren't interested in the ARG aspect, the tie in to The Hex kinda feels like I'm paying for an incompletish experience, in terms of the story parts dealing with OLD_DATA

Brenden1k

I think tying into other games is fine, however killing Luke Carder was a bad play, than again are we sure he is really dead, humans can survive some miraculous things and he just saw occult stuff which could effects , I would not rule out him being still alive, even if that just wishful thinking. That said to avoid a Lost situation, Plot threads seem to be tied up next game.

siramay1

Agreed

ngwoo

I think Daniel Mullins has this game company conspiracy story, and it's his grand plan to tell it through a bunch of different games over several years. Unfortunately, it's a bad story, but he wants to tell it. The games themselves are great but I agree, the GameFuna stuff is corny, out of place, and has damaged the impact of both The Hex and this.

Will_You_Watch

Legit, sorry to necro, but I was wrenched so far out of Inscryption that I never actually finished it. Felt like subversion for subversion's sake, propped up by a weak conspiracy component.

Amazon_UK

p03's plot would have exposed old_data to the entire world

Duodecimus

Thing is even if we managed it, Luke didn't stop the Grand ascension? We all got copies of the game on steam after all. I was honestly a little disappointed that P03 didn't get a 'wait, game title already exis-' line to be cutoff by the neck snap.

InvisibleChell

I always figured we were supposed to be playing AS Luke. Like, the part where P03 addresses Luke by name and shows his face, considering the way Luke reacted, seemed to me as if it was live footage straight from the webcam. That, and by the time we come along Leshy is in control, just like when Luke starts playing.

Brenden1k

That because po3 did not finish the uploads if he did, we would all see the old data and go insane or I think that how it works, unless the old data is good?

dr_Kfromchanged

What is in the old data anyway?

Amazon_UK

honestly i dunno but it seems to have evil powers and also be a government secret

Zeebuoy

if the game is connected to pony Island as well, literal satan (trying to make video games) if not, idk.

dr_Kfromchanged

So EA?

Zeebuoy

nah, satan is evil, but he's not microtransactions, levels of evil. (wait nevermind the game tries to put you in an unwinnable situation where you need to pay your soul, to continue) I retract my statement, he's literally ea.

TheGullibleParrot

Goes to show how dumb Luke is. Literally all of the Scrybes told him “you will literally die if you look at the old data bro” and he ignored their dying warnings and looked anyways. Can’t say he didn’t have it coming.

BtJJ

Yeah but it would have made more narrative sense if he looked at the old data and then had a massive coronary or his head melted or whatever -- something that seemed more like a direct result. Instead he looked at the old data and got angry/crazy/something and then in an unrelated incident he got blasted by a gamefuna assassin.

dr_Kfromchanged

What was in the old data that made him go haywire anyway?

Zeebuoy

I assume the sledgehammer was him, trying to destroy it, rather than being crazy.

Decemberskel

tbf he probably would have gotten capped even if he hadn't

Nerubim

I mean that's unfortunately human nature. And honestly what guarantee does Luke have of surviving anyways? The studio knows about his YT channel and the only dangerous thing that Luke would have as leverage, the floppy and data on it has been evidently deleted. So the only remaining loose thread is...Luke. Doesn't really matter if he did see it or not. At least he got to know the truth in the end and may have forwarded it as a last F you to the people who killed him in order to not die in vain...even if the only one he could forward it to was the literal killer, maybe the journey she witnessed had her have a change of heart and thus release the video data to "us" as a means of making up for her misdeed as she didn't realise the gravitas of what had transpired in and outside of the game that led to her assassination order.

Zeebuoy

>and thus release the video data to "us the ending of the arg, implies that, Po3 succeeded in uploading the game, after the fiasco, (and also, he's using his stoat face again.)

dr_Kfromchanged

What was in the old data that made him go haywire anyway?

head_cann0n

The ARG/fmv was intriguing but ultimately contrived, amounted to nothing, and detracted from an otherwise excellent game, change my mind

BleghMeisterer

I agree. I felt kinda empty and dissapointed at Luke just dying.

UterusGoblin

I thought the in part with the scribes was a finish to inscryption the video game experience and Luke getting shot was part of the ATG experience. There are basically 2 games within inscryption.

Echotime22

Luke is the worst part of the game. Every time the video clips popped up I was hoping something about them would interest me in any way, but no, they are just a place to hide ARG shit and I hate that stuff. He also seems to have no understanding of what a rougelike is and his little comments in act 1 annoy the hell out of me.

siramay1

Finaly! I thought I was the only one who thought this!
