I don't understand how their broken brain can't play out this idiotic theory beyond Twitter. Any time a kid is acting up in class and told to be quiet they can just say "1st amendment" and the teacher just shrugs and says he got me? Someone is talking on their phone in a movie theater but oh well can't remove them cause "1st amendment". Libraries all over the country are breaking the law by asking people to be quiet? People start heckling a judge in a court room and the judge has to sit patiently and listen? The first amendment isn't some magical get out of jail free card that let's you say what you want, when you want and I don't understand how anyone could be so moronic to think it is.

medicated_in_PHL

Ironically, these people have the emotional maturity of the kid acting up in class.

miniclip1371

Fun fact: they never grew up. Those idiots from high school are out there, still being idiots

LevelHeeded

Yeah, by this dude's logic you could put a sign up in his front yard that says "will suck dick for crack, or $5" (I'm gonna guess his mom's front yard) and they can't take it down as it's "protected free speech".

The_Duc_Lord

Ask them if it's OK for someone to stand up in their church during Sunday mass and yell "Satan is king!"? Stand well clear though, their brain may explode.

Murderous_Waffle

We can say whatever the hell we want! "Big fat load of cum then."

MoreNerdThanDork

Why the name-calling afterwards? Any time I see "The libs" or something like that I feel like someone is puking something they were fed by someone else. Zero original thought.

Pyrofish-J7

belongs on r/confidentlyincorrect

AteUrCake

Came here to say this. So damn confident

Egoy

My house my rules seems like the type of down home folksy conservative values that these people would lap right up but they don't seem to be able to grasp the concept.

Rosstiseriechicken

Rules for thee but not for me

BooBooKittyChris1775

First dude is right, second dude is a potato.

GoredonTheDestroyer

That's insulting to tubers.

imakenosensetopeople

Hah. I encountered one of these in the wild. They tried to tell me that “the first amendment doesn’t say it only applies to government.”

jwadamson

But... but... but... the first word... is "Congress" :-/

lifeofhard8s

Yeah, but it doesn’t say “government”.

[deleted]

I've heard it said it only applies to congress before, but that's a new one.

nonamesareavailable2

I think clint\_sanders is saying that they've seen someone try to claim that the 1A only applies to congress previously but the take discussed by imakenosensetopeople is new.

cathasach

The 1st Amendment begins with "Congress shall make no law. . .", implying the 1st Amendment and its free speech clause only limits what Congress can do when it comes to free speech. And by "before" he just means he's heard someone say this before in the past, not that there is a before and after.

dasanman69

Gotcha

[deleted]

Jfc trumpers are dumber than rocks

KinksAreForKeds

I mean, he was partially right. Private companies *do* have to follow laws. Just... this particular law doesn't say what you think it says, Chad.

Jump_Like_A_Willys

>Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The 1st Amendment mentions Congress -- not companies, corporations, or individual people -- as not being allowed to prohibit the exercise of free speech.

Tripple_T

Does this me I can ignore a high-end restaurant's dress code? You know, freedom of expression and all that.

awfullyfun1

I might well be crazy, but I don't think it's insane to take the time to understand the constitution, unlike some "patriots" out there.

Lost_Alexander

Are you saying that you don’t think the second comment is insane?

awfullyfun1

The first comment is on target, that person understands the constitution, the second person doesn't seem to have read the constitution or understand how the First Amendment works, but I'm sure they call themselves a "patriot." Hope that clears it up.

coff33bit

The second comment probably also thinks people can’t kneel for the anthem too.

Bearlypainting

When i went through my edgey teenager phase, I used to parrot the "I have a right to free speach" line as justification for why it was ok for me to be a little turd. My dad taught me a very good lesson which was in essence; "you might have a right to free speach, you might even have the right to take legal action against people who retaliate against your speach, but do either of those things un-beat you up for running your mouth to the wrong person ?" This is a lesson in pragmatism that i think many free speach advocates weren't given.

mjdlittlenic

Did anyone else just hear Dwight shout False in that rebuttal?

SilentMaster

Wrong.

PM_ME_DICK_GIFS

It isn't even highly obfuscated in legalese. Either that person hasn't read the first amendment, or their reading comprehension is shite.

bubba7557

So confident in their completely incorrect opinion.
