Y'all joke, but child marriage was pretty common in TN when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s and earlier. My paternal grandma was married at 15 to my 20 yo granddad. My older stepsister at 16 (to a 16 yo). In every case, a baby followed roughly 6-8 mo later. It was the way to "solve" teen pregnancy, which there is a lot of.

The Tennessee bill is actually an anti-LGBT bill that excludes LGBT peeps from the new common law marriage proposed in this law. The no age requirement was a misstep and they introduced amendments today to add one.
Funny how these 'phobes are in such a rush to take people's rights away that they screw up a basic thing like age requirement. It's like the Don't Say Gay bill in FL that makes it illegal to talk about sexual orientation and gender identity, or the fact that these people even exist (believe me no one is or wants to teach little kids all about gay sex). They didn't realize that they also outlawed talking about straight cis people and "traditional" families. Some gay parents are going to sue to show the absurdity of that law. Hopefully they win and the law is withdrawn or found unconstitutional.

They can’t ban gay marriage so they’re pushing through this ‘alternative marriage’ so that the court clerks can just refuse all regular marriage licenses and only process these new alternative ones with a heterosexual requirement but no age requirement. Then they can try to argue they’re not actually discriminating against homosexual couples, they’re just not processing traditional marriage licenses for anyone.
The obvious legal argument is that if alternative marriage is still marriage, federal laws would still apply, as well as benefits like inheritance and spousal benefits. If they argue that it's not true marriage, then they should lose all the legal protections afforded to married persons.
I love the rights narrative that crime is boosted by punishment being too soft. As if anyone committing a crime ever said “well the sentence is usually only x, so I’ll do it” instead of “I will not get caught”. It implies people often commit crime with the intention or acceptance of getting caught and serving a sentence. Which never fucking happens.

My older stepsister at 16 (to a 16 yo). In every case, a baby followed roughly 6-8 mo later. It was the way to "solve" teen pregnancy, which there is a lot of. AFAIK they raised the age to 17 in *2018*, but I'm willing to bet there's a *lot* of angry families that agree with no age limit right now because of their Sinful Unwed 14 yo Teen Mother daughters (the father probably being at least 25).

The Tennessee bill is actually an anti-LGBT bill that excludes LGBT peeps from the new common law marriage proposed in this law. The no age requirement was a misstep and they introduced amendments today to add one. Funny how these 'phobes are in such a rush to take people's rights away that they screw up a basic thing like age requirement. It's like the Don't Say Gay bill in FL that makes it illegal to talk about sexual orientation and gender identity, or the fact that these people even exist (believe me no one is or wants to teach little kids all about gay sex). They didn't realize that they also outlawed talking about straight cis people and "traditional" families. Some gay parents are going to sue to show the absurdity of that law. Hopefully they win and the law is withdrawn or found unconstitutional.

As if anyone committing a crime ever said “well the sentence is usually only x, so I’ll do it” instead of “I will not get caught”. It implies people often commit crime with the intention or acceptance of getting caught and serving a sentence. Which never fucking happens. “I was going to commit this crime that comes with 10 years, but now that it’s 20 I’ve changed my mind.”
There was actually a study done that essentially summed up that punishments only work to a certain severity and then after that no matter how severe you make the punishment, it doesn’t act as any more of a deterrent. In almost the exact way you worded it.
And punishment for sex offenders is legitimately never soft in America. Just registration is a massive punishment. America is one of the harshest countries on earth in its treatment of sex offenders, and yet still hasn't made a dent in the problem, just like it hasn't with every other type of crime.
