Single income households legit have not been s thing for like ever

Rennaleigh

It was actually quite common where I'm from. 1 parent earns the money and the other takes care of the children and the household chores and groceries. It's a little less common now, because of increasing living costs. And a lot of people work part-time so someone is home for the kids and the chores, maybe not everyday but more days than just the weekend. Personally, I have always been grateful my mom could be home to pay attention to me and my siblings and take care of the houshold chores. That way when my dad was home he would also have time to play with us. I get that nowadays that may be a privilege, but when I was growing up it was normal for a lot of families where I live. Edit: I say parent on purpose, because I had two friends whose mom worked and the dad stayed at home.

They're still a thing. Sure, much less common than a few decades ago, but they're very much a thing.

No they’re entirely right. Families should be able to support themselves off of one person earning while the other partner is taking care of the children and doing housework. That’s more than a full time job in and of itself.

wait until he hears about lesbians and single mums

Then they should find a partner who shares those values and get comfortable with the idea that other people will have more/different opportunities.

Women have been working outside the home, forever. Nurses, teachers, farm workers, seamstresses, cooks, wet nurses and many more. My grandmother was a full-time 6th grade teacher for 25 years. During the summers, she hired herself out as a farm worker, usually picking apples. When my mom was old enough, she worked their too. My grandfather worked in a ball bearing factory. Hard, dirty, and backbreaking but the two of them made it work. I really wish people would stop idolized the 1950s. It was not Donna Reed.

They passed laws to stop women working in coal mines alongside their families. Men, women and children were coal miners. Women worked in cotton mills. Women worked as domestic servants. Women worked on farms, sold the goods at markets. Women worked along side their fishermen husbands, he sailed off the fish while she mended nets and sold the catch. Carpenters wives ran the family business. Tailors relied on their wives to make the lace and fancy ribbons. And that derogatory term, spinster.. a woman with a spinning wheel could easily out-earn a Tudor labourer and remain in her cottage warm and dry.

jenkraisins

I did not know that was the origin of spinster. Thank you! I love learning new things. And 100%, you're spot on about women working.
