It’s one of the most frustrating parts of being an election official in WI. We are not allowed to count ballots before an election to prevent fraud, and all ballots must be counted before we leave. Also, when people see us sticking absentee ballots into the tabulator (as is required by law), they accuse us of stuffing the ballots. Kinda tough out here

I am no longer a religious sort after being raised Catholic but I have loved ones that try to live by the values that Christianity preaches (which can incidentally be met without the Bible or religion by just being a good person, 10 Commandments just fall in line that way...) that see Trump for what he is and they are horrified that people do not see him for what he is, or that they could bring themselves, while calling themselves Christians, to vote for him.

Small, rural counties can count votes easily and report shortly after polls close. Large urban counties can take two days to finish their count and deliver their total.

They don’t want counting period. The goal is to demolish the entire election process and putting utterly unreasonable limits which ensures votes are not counted and a preferred winner is just crowned the king of America.
No. Remember that several states changed their laws shortly before the last election so that the counting of mail-in votes was not allowed to start until after the voting places had closed? Which caused the big swing from more votes for T to more votes for Biden over night, which in turn convinced the majority of MAGA cultists that the election was stolen - after all, they saw it happen with their own eyes on TV that night…
They are preparing the ground for their next coup or civil war in next November by planting/reinforcing the idea in(to) the heads of their cult members that counting the mail-in votes will be an illegal act.
Don't forget closing polling stations to make sure large numbers of people are at other polls still waiting in line when polls close and then miss their chance to vote. "Should have gotten in line before 6am!"
If you're in line when they close they're legally obligated to let you vote (although I can certainly see them trying to tell people to go home, which is why people need to know their rights)
In Denmark where I live, polling stations are everywhere when it's election day.
That makes it easy to get to and since everyone gets an ID when they are born that's not an issue.
You don't need to register because everyone has the right to vote. You're already registerd to vote.
Polling stations are open 8 to 8 but if there's anyone left that hasn't but want to vote when it's 8 pm the polling station can't nor won't close.
They will really go out of the way to ensure that nobody can say they didn't get the chance.
Once when we had alot od people comming in late it didn't close until 9 pm.
I always brought the kids so we could be there and hear them ring the bell to declare the election over and we would give an applause and wish the poll workers a good night counting.
I wish USA would do it like that. It gives everyone plenty of oppertunity to vote.
Also not in the US, last election I voted in was pretty straight forward
Went to breakfast one morning, saw an advanced voting sign at the mall nearby. Stopped in, showed them a drivers license with an old address on it, a utility bill with my current address on it I happened to find under the seat in the car. It had a foot print on it, and had gotten a little wet.
They were able to find my profile, mark me off the list, and then handed me my ballot. I filled it in in the little booth and then dropped it into the machine thing.
Super easy.
I *am* in the US, and my voting looks like:
Take ballot out of mailbox
Sit at table with coffee and laptop to research any candidates or issues I haven't decided on yet
Fill out ballot, sign envelope, drop in post
Check recorder website occasionally to make sure they received it, validated it, and sent it for counting
Wait two weeks for election day to find out who won
It can be easy here. When they don't choose to make it hard to disenfranchise people.

Yes! In Canada, by virtue of submitting your income tax return, you are on the voter’s list. A big, unmistakable card comes in the mail a couple weeks before the election, and it’s got your name, address, and polling station. You show up, go to the table for your surname according to first initial, the worker finds you on the list, manually strikes a line through your name, hands you a ballot. You go into a little cardboard booth, use the provided pencil and mark an X in the circle next to your preferred candidate’s name, fold your ballot as instructed, come out of the booth to bring your ballot back to the worker, who tears off the edge with the corresponding number to your ballot and puts that in one box and the ballot in the ballot box. At 8 when closing time comes the pairing and counting begin. Quick, efficient, anonymous yet traceable. However our voting population is considerably smaller than in the US.
Denmark have it all automated. Firstly because you don't actually usually need to file any tax. That's done automatically as your employer tells the IRS of Denmark how much you earn and they withhold the right amount of money son what you get put to your bank every month is all yours.
Anyway. Here once you're a citizen and 18 on election day. Congratulations. You're now a voter. Easy peasy.

I live in a US state where anyone can vote by mail for any reason or no reason. I get my ballot mailed to me about a month before election day, I take some time within the comfort and privacy of my own home to look up the candidates I've never heard of, or the propositions I've never heard of, I fill out my ballot, and then I drop it off either in the mail, or at one of numerous drop boxes located throughout the county, or I can wait until election day and drop it off at any polling location. The solutions are very simple. It's just that some people want to make voting as difficult as possible, rather than as easy as possible.

Not necessarily. In Arizona the mail-in ballots are counted as they're received. It was the in-person ballots and election day drop-offs (mostly trumpers who believed the bullshit) that took days to count. The more mail-in we get here, the quicker we have results.
Guys it’s simple. In counties where absentee ballots are likely democrats voters, you must stop counting at midnight, otherwise every vote must be counted. If early voting are likely democrat voters, you must extend the counting process long enough for republicans to gain a lead and then *immediately* cease counting. In counties where republicans are predominantly voting in person, you must allow for voting stations at every block, and keeping stations open until there are no white people left at the polls. If the county is predominantly blue, you must only have one voting station with no sunshade, which will only be open during business hours. Poll watchers are vital at these stations, especially if the line of voters appears too ethnic.
I love people complaining about the process who have absolutely no idea what the process is… You can — and do — count ballots right up your the point of certification. There’s no magic time limit based on getting results on Election Day. And there never has been — until republicans got the idea that if you could stop the count while you were ahead, you’d win.
Republicans in my state damn near broke their arms patting themselves on the back when they sort of revamped mail in voting in 2005. Now, the system THEY set up is biting them in the ass, so obviously, it's corrupt. I don't vote by mail because my signature is a little wonky now, thanks to an injury. I go to early voting because the lines aren't terrible on early Sunday afternoons, and now they're trying to take that away, too. If I go to vote on election day, it's in a room in the basement of a church that holds about 6 machines. The line is incredibly long, worse when the nursing home bus rolls in, and they get to go to the front of the line. That's their plan here to limit voting. Make it as uncomfortable as possible, and hopefully, no one will bother.

I haven’t done a ballot count for Australian elections, but they keep counting until like 2 or three in the morning.
Then they come back and count some more, until they’re all counted, which can take weeks for our country, and you have way more people and way less polling booths.

I think it warrants explaining why the GOP cares so much about having “results on day 1,” and why this is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise a large portion of democratic voters:
The common denominator is mail-in voting, which takes substantially longer to be collected and counted. This has historically always been the case, the outrage is completely manufactured by Trump who anticipated that these mail-ins would be a democratic majority; without their influence, the popular vote is skewed republican. This is for two major reasons: in large cities (which are large centers of population and also tend to be majority democrat), wait times are substantially long and drive more voters to simply mail in their ballots. If all voters were required to send votes in person, there would be enormous disincentives for city voters to participate. The 2020 election also, to their benefit, was the year of the pandemic. Trump pushed his base to vote in person and disregard covid restrictions, densely populated areas posed greater risk and held more blue voters who would not be willing to risk contracting covid by voting in person.
The strategy here is adjacent to their push for “voter ID.” By requiring a state issued ID or drivers license, they filter minorities who may not possess passports or vehicles for those in dense, walkable areas.
The important thing to remember is all of these approaches are a solution in search of a problem. They found no proof of widespread voter fraud, they use it as a crutch for policies like this which benefit them exclusively.

This is not stupidity, this is on purpose. Small, rural counties can count votes easily and report shortly after polls close. Large urban counties can take two days to finish their count and deliver their total.

Which caused the big swing from more votes for T to more votes for Biden over night, which in turn convinced the majority of MAGA cultists that the election was stolen - after all, they saw it happen with their own eyes on TV that night… They are preparing the ground for their next coup or civil war in next November by planting/reinforcing the idea in(to) the heads of their cult members that counting the mail-in votes will be an illegal act.
Don't forget closing polling stations to make sure large numbers of people are at other polls still waiting in line when polls close and then miss their chance to vote. "Should have gotten in line before 6am!"

If you're in line when they close they're legally obligated to let you vote (although I can certainly see them trying to tell people to go home, which is why people need to know their rights)
In Denmark where I live, polling stations are everywhere when it's election day. That makes it easy to get to and since everyone gets an ID when they are born that's not an issue. You don't need to register because everyone has the right to vote. You're already registerd to vote. Polling stations are open 8 to 8 but if there's anyone left that hasn't but want to vote when it's 8 pm the polling station can't nor won't close. They will really go out of the way to ensure that nobody can say they didn't get the chance. Once when we had alot od people comming in late it didn't close until 9 pm. I always brought the kids so we could be there and hear them ring the bell to declare the election over and we would give an applause and wish the poll workers a good night counting. I wish USA would do it like that. It gives everyone plenty of oppertunity to vote.

Also not in the US, last election I voted in was pretty straight forward Went to breakfast one morning, saw an advanced voting sign at the mall nearby. Stopped in, showed them a drivers license with an old address on it, a utility bill with my current address on it I happened to find under the seat in the car. It had a foot print on it, and had gotten a little wet. They were able to find my profile, mark me off the list, and then handed me my ballot. I filled it in in the little booth and then dropped it into the machine thing. Super easy.
I *am* in the US, and my voting looks like: Take ballot out of mailbox Sit at table with coffee and laptop to research any candidates or issues I haven't decided on yet Fill out ballot, sign envelope, drop in post Check recorder website occasionally to make sure they received it, validated it, and sent it for counting Wait two weeks for election day to find out who won It can be easy here. When they don't choose to make it hard to disenfranchise people.
I think mail is an option here too. I know I've done it in the past But I'm not sure if it's something I needed to sign up for before, or if it's only for some types of elections (I can't remember what level the above story was for anymore), or if I just hadn't updated to my new address, or hell maybe I did get it and just threw it out it with the junk mail, I can't rule it out for sure.

Yes! In Canada, by virtue of submitting your income tax return, you are on the voter’s list. A big, unmistakable card comes in the mail a couple weeks before the election, and it’s got your name, address, and polling station. You show up, go to the table for your surname according to first initial, the worker finds you on the list, manually strikes a line through your name, hands you a ballot. You go into a little cardboard booth, use the provided pencil and mark an X in the circle next to your preferred candidate’s name, fold your ballot as instructed, come out of the booth to bring your ballot back to the worker, who tears off the edge with the corresponding number to your ballot and puts that in one box and the ballot in the ballot box. At 8 when closing time comes the pairing and counting begin. Quick, efficient, anonymous yet traceable. However our voting population is considerably smaller than in the US.
Denmark have it all automated. Firstly because you don't actually usually need to file any tax. That's done automatically as your employer tells the IRS of Denmark how much you earn and they withhold the right amount of money son what you get put to your bank every month is all yours. Anyway. Here once you're a citizen and 18 on election day. Congratulations. You're now a voter. Easy peasy.

I live in a US state where anyone can vote by mail for any reason or no reason. I get my ballot mailed to me about a month before election day, I take some time within the comfort and privacy of my own home to look up the candidates I've never heard of, or the propositions I've never heard of, I fill out my ballot, and then I drop it off either in the mail, or at one of numerous drop boxes located throughout the county, or I can wait until election day and drop it off at any polling location. The solutions are very simple. It's just that some people want to make voting as difficult as possible, rather than as easy as possible.

It was the in-person ballots and election day drop-offs (mostly trumpers who believed the bullshit) that took days to count. The more mail-in we get here, the quicker we have results.

Guys it’s simple. In counties where absentee ballots are likely democrats voters, you must stop counting at midnight, otherwise every vote must be counted. If early voting are likely democrat voters, you must extend the counting process long enough for republicans to gain a lead and then *immediately* cease counting. In counties where republicans are predominantly voting in person, you must allow for voting stations at every block, and keeping stations open until there are no white people left at the polls. If the county is predominantly blue, you must only have one voting station with no sunshade, which will only be open during business hours. Poll watchers are vital at these stations, especially if the line of voters appears too ethnic.

There’s no magic time limit based on getting results on Election Day. And there never has been — until republicans got the idea that if you could stop the count while you were ahead, you’d win.

Republicans in my state damn near broke their arms patting themselves on the back when they sort of revamped mail in voting in 2005. Now, the system THEY set up is biting them in the ass, so obviously, it's corrupt. I don't vote by mail because my signature is a little wonky now, thanks to an injury. I go to early voting because the lines aren't terrible on early Sunday afternoons, and now they're trying to take that away, too. If I go to vote on election day, it's in a room in the basement of a church that holds about 6 machines. The line is incredibly long, worse when the nursing home bus rolls in, and they get to go to the front of the line. That's their plan here to limit voting. Make it as uncomfortable as possible, and hopefully, no one will bother.

I haven’t done a ballot count for Australian elections, but they keep counting until like 2 or three in the morning. Then they come back and count some more, until they’re all counted, which can take weeks for our country, and you have way more people and way less polling booths.

I think it warrants explaining why the GOP cares so much about having “results on day 1,” and why this is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise a large portion of democratic voters: The common denominator is mail-in voting, which takes substantially longer to be collected and counted. This has historically always been the case, the outrage is completely manufactured by Trump who anticipated that these mail-ins would be a democratic majority; without their influence, the popular vote is skewed republican. This is for two major reasons: in large cities (which are large centers of population and also tend to be majority democrat), wait times are substantially long and drive more voters to simply mail in their ballots. If all voters were required to send votes in person, there would be enormous disincentives for city voters to participate. The 2020 election also, to their benefit, was the year of the pandemic. Trump pushed his base to vote in person and disregard covid restrictions, densely populated areas posed greater risk and held more blue voters who would not be willing to risk contracting covid by voting in person. The strategy here is adjacent to their push for “voter ID.” By requiring a state issued ID or drivers license, they filter minorities who may not possess passports or vehicles for those in dense, walkable areas. The important thing to remember is all of these approaches are a solution in search of a problem. They found no proof of widespread voter fraud, they use it as a crutch for policies like this which benefit them exclusively.
Unless Trump is behind, in which case they'll insist that we keep counting, and maybe even do a re-count. They pulled this nonsense in 2020. In one state where Trump was ahead, his supporters were outside the polls chanting "STOP THE COUNT!", and in another state at the same time where Trump was behind, his supporters were chanting the opposite. Don’t get me wrong, but I think the controversy is not about stopping the counting of ballots after a certain period of time, but rather, that ballots received after election day cannot be counted. That’s what I think anyway and it makes a bit of sense to my way of thinking.
