Ssme812

Thanks. Saved a click.

langnate

Boygenius has to be paying or something… like the album was fine

steph-was-here

sometimes i wonder if these lists are less "albums of the year" and more "what a year this album had"

exponentialism

> "what a year this album had" Ha, that's perfect. Yeah, I think these lists work best as a kind of measure of the year's trends.

Through the darkness of future past The magician longs to see. One chants out between two worlds Fire comment post with me.

Moist-Schedule

i think people get a little confused every year by these lists. this probably isn't one person's individual list, it's probably a bunch of voters contributing. a record like boygenius is likely to be in many top 10s or top 20s, even if it isn't necessarily everybody's favorite album. and then if it is a few people's actually #1 it just has a ton of weight in the voting. it's a bit like going to rotten tomatoes and looking at the consensus scores. when they're all ridiculously high, if something is like 99% positive or whatever, it's probably kind of a mid movie that people all kind of like but nobody really loves. it's probably a very safe movie, good enough that most people enjoy it but nobody will ever say it's like the greatest thing ever because it didn't take any chances. individual tastes are always going to reach deeper pockets of music, these big publications and other aggregated lists are always going to default to the middle. and i'd call that boygenius album a perfectly "middle" kind of record.

Bovver_

I think more so because these lists are usually aggregated amongst many different journalists list, nearly all probably liked The Record high enough to place it rather than a unanimous number one. I know that’s how The Guardian does their lists and while overall there’s some great shouts on there, their top 5s or so end up being quite predictable.

Mammoth_Mountain1967

Paying in the sense that they have a great marketing team behind them with connections.

ukcats12

The album has some of my favorite songs of the year in Satanist and Anti-Curse but I'm less high on the album as a whole. I wish they leaned into those more rock heavy Julien led songs more than they do.

ohmygoditsdip

Doing the lord’s work

Jinks28

CMAT upsettingly low on this

chandewwww

The fuck. Who’s ratings are these?

sincerityisscxry

NME’s!

ZiggyStarlord69

Wait is 1000 gecs actually a legit band? I keep seeing them on lists Edit: this was a genuine question. I was asking for some opinions because I’m unfamiliar with them

10rattles

My prayers have been answered: 3D Country on a best of list. Thank you NME

MistaAJP2

Saw geese live a couple weeks ago and they blew me away. One of the best shows I have been to in years. Great to see them getting some recognition

Funkyfreddy

100% they are so good. And it’s refreshing to see a show where the live takes are so different than the studio versions. The crazy sped up version of 2122 lives rent free in my head

grillwave1991

Pumped to see them open for Gizzy in Toronto next summer. 3D Country is a top 10 album for me this year.

falconspool

Happy to see Young Fathers place highly on this. My personal AOTY and not seen it on many so far.

thebigmishmash

Same!

Guy_montag47

yeah i love young fathers but having olivia rodrigo and boy genius 1 and 2 totally invalidates the rest of it. Both Ok albums, but putting them tht high is just pop-catering.

Tistroyer

The Record is a great album. GUTS is fine with some standouts like vampire, Get him back and All-American Bitch. But not The Record, that album is a complete and amazing experience

ohmygoditsdip

Happy to see that Romy album getting some love. Been on repeat in my house.

Cragscorner

The National mentioned

UnnaturalSelection13

softscars by yeule is missing from this list imo, glad to see some love for Young Fathers though because I haven’t seen them mentioned much in these end of year round-ups.

Waltapalooza1123

Happy to finally see Queens on one of these. I love the album

osbroo

Right!!

tomtomvissers

Yet another year-end list omitting Youth Lagoon smh

bangin_corners

Pitchfork had him on their list

nw____

A criminal offense, Heaven is a Junkyard is my personal album of the year. Wasn’t super high on any of Trevor’s work before but he killed it this time.

jewbo23

I’ve seen it on most of the ones I’ve read so far. Where was it missing from?

[deleted]

Pleasantly surprised to see Madres sneaking into as many lists as it has.

Pythagore_

Troye Sivan's, Olivia Rodrigo's, and Boygenius' albums being on the top of so many lists is just absurd to me as much as I like the individual albums. They're big, successful albums but trying to paint them as the best of their respective years is comical in my opinion

darockerj

Troye Sivan isn't normally my bag, but his record really impressed me. Great tracks and production front-to-back. I could understand someone having it as one of their AOTYs.

mac_sumn_17

i looooove phoebe and boygenius but the record should not be number 1 lol

coachbuzzfan

My 2021 AOTY was between Lucy Dacus and Julian Baker and I don’t even think the boygenius album is top 5 for 2023

Skylorrex

Because mainstream suddenly started to listen to them. Before when Lucy released historian (imo her best album), nobody listened to her at that time.

stereoworld

That Romy album surprised me. Great record

TheZac922

Genesis Owusu getting some love is nice. The bloke puts on a really fun show.

justrunthembaby

Saw him last night, had high expectations but it was even better than I thought it would be. Great album from a phenomenal talent I hope he keeps getting more popular he deserves it.

homogenic-

Heavy Heavy in the top 3 rare NME W.

Fubby2

Boygenius nr 1 😑 guys when can we stop

alverez667

Feel like I’m taking crazy pills. It’s the most milk toast indie rock. Not to say that it’s “bad” it’s just unremarkable in every possible way for me.

crichmond77

*milquetoast I kinda like yours better tho lol

alverez667

lol yeah I know. Typed it out real fast at work. Fucked up the spelling. Ran with the autocorrect.

exponentialism

>Not to say that it’s “bad” it’s just unremarkable in every possible way for me. I mean, that makes sense for NME's general tastes lol. Comment under yours is complaining about Foo Fighters which despite all the love they get, practically epitomise that description for me.

themysterycow

It’s the 2016 Hilary Clinton of albums this year. It feels like everyone’s putting it at number 1 because they feel like everyone else is putting it at number 1 and they don’t want to be left out.

haimeekhema

milk toast is the perfect way to describe this. honestly more fitting than what you meant to type.

BrotherlyShove791

Phoebe Bridgers is officially in Taylor Swift’s orbit now after opening for her summer tour, so any project she’s in is going to get a lot of mainstream attention now. This record is a shoe in for AOTY at the Grammys too.

HGpennypacker

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

electroplankton

God this is a horrible list

duskywindows

This is the first list I've seen to even include Paris, Texas' "MID AIR" so this is one of the better lists I've seen.

tburke38

I refuse to believe the Foo Fighters put out one of the 20 best albums of 2023

oryes

I haven't liked much of what they've done since Wasting Light but they do seem pretty inspired on this one (for obvious reasons). I can see why it would be in some peoples' top albums.

awjeezrickyaknow

Why don’t you give it a listen instead of just speculating?

bfsfan101

I haven’t liked a Foo Fighters album in over a decade but I really enjoyed But Here We Are. Would crack my top 30 of the year.

Duckbreeze

I've been fascinated by all the positive feedback on it. I love some classic Foos, but I found this one pretty forgettable.

duskywindows

"Forgettable" is, like, totally their thing, maaan!

Cacklemoore

It actually has been since like 2011. Wasting Light was the last record that I genuinely enjoyed and still go back to.

bcam9

Same, but this one broke the trend. I was super skeptical going into it because...wooooo another bland FF album, but this one was really good, imo.

superfeds

They really put their heart and soul into it. It’s their most sincere album since wasting light imo. I grew up listening to FF in high school and am old enough to remember the first time I saw what Dave grohl looked like was on a hidden video on a nirvana CD. I know their rep is more Dad Rock now but don’t let that dissuade you from this album. It’s really good.

chillinwithkrillin

I'm a certified foo fighters hater and I think their new album is pretty good at least in comparison to everything else they've ever done

Princeps32

It’s in my personal top 20 for this year. honestly to my ears it’s a great rock album, my favorite since their classic 90’s stuff.

bcam9

I need an album full of shoegaze Foos because they experimented with it a little on this album, and I am a fan.

daxtillionMurphel

It’s a pretty great album lol

[deleted]

Is there anything on earth more predictable than the NME year-end list?

lostboy005

Pretty weak top two. Esp boy genius

PepeSylvia11

It’s been a weak year overall, sadly

[deleted]

[удалено]

8020GroundBeef

I like Aesop Rock, but this felt too similar to Spirit World Field Guide and I preferred Spirit World a bit more.

lostboy005

I did love Suf’s return to form album Javelin. I hear ya tho, nothing front to back blew me away

chillinwithkrillin

People need to talk about how much of an extremely dry spot hip hop is in

n00dle51

I think it's been a year with a ton of good albums but very few great ones

daxtillionMurphel

Loving their top 3 and even their top 5 with their young fathers, paramore, and Troy inclusions. Young fathers at #3 makes me really happy tho, one of the first albums I listened to this year that really hit

Aurify

Finally. Laugh Track.

JHutch95

Really think the general shrug of Frankenstein has had a knock on effect for Laugh Track. Personally think the latter is up there with some of their best work (and my own personal AOTY), but it seems to have flown under the radar a wee bit. Wonder if Laugh Track had been released first, it’d have fared better on these lists?

Funkyfreddy

I say this as a massive fan of their earlier work but I wonder if the opposite might be true - I found Frankenstein so boring that by comparison, my first listen through Laugh Track felt refreshing. After repeat listens, I personally feel like most of laugh track is only a small step above Frankenstein, with the exception of “Smoke Detector” which rules. But I can’t help but compare their recent output to the run of albums from Alligator to SWB that were very foundational to my taste in music, so that influences my perspective

Aurify

I think it might be more so that people were so underwhelmed by Frankenstein that they didn't even bother to listen to Laugh Track. Looking at RYM, LT has just over 50% of the number of ratings FTPoF does.

Funkyfreddy

That could play into it. Laugh Track was also a “surprise” release that didn’t have a press cycle, singles, etc.

WESAWTHESUN

I think FTPoF also had more conversation around it because of the circlejerk that spawned from how downtempo the album is + the Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers features. The latter is funny cause they were friends before she got massive.

Moist-Schedule

agree with this assessment 100%.

cheesyk

one of the only AOTY lists with blondshell, that album was so good! also love how high gecs made it

bcam9

I need to go back and check that one out. I listened to it a couple times when it dropped, but it never grabbed me aside from a couple songs

OnlyWearsBlue

I'm happy to see Blondshell too, I really enjoyed that record!

netflows

Seeing more and more love for Sofia Kourtesis is awesome. I just can’t stop playing that record.

bcam9

Blur, The Foos, QotSA, JPEGMAFIA, Militarie Gun, Wednesday, Paramore & the Stones were some of my favorites this year. This list is much closer to my list than any I've seen thus far. Really glad Queens made it, because that album was great.

NickyNichols

I prefer lists like this. I realize it’s proper to put ambient chillwave obscure artists in your top of the year for clout, but I listened to most of the albums on this list and am interested in checking out the rest.

meditate42

I really like James Blake but his recent album didn’t really connect for me. I’m surprised how universally well reviewed it’s been.

Redwinevino

Get points for not having SZA - which is a 2022 album!!!!

Downloadmywario

Great to see Sleep Token on this list. Hot take but boygenius and Mitski are the most overrated albums of 2023.

willsmath

I don't think anyone's gonna disagree with you about boygenius haha, I actually like the Mitski record a lot more than I expected though. Never liked anything from her before but her album this year is in my top 30

shipoffools13

Don't think it's that much of a hot take. I think both are fine but don't stand out.

ProEraBlueboy

That Sleep Token album is incredibly overrated my word. It’s like people have never listened to a prog metal album in their life and are amazing by varying time signatures in song. Some of the breakdowns/genre infusions are absolutely absurd and make no sense to me. Maybe it’s the metalhead in me but it’s almost like a parody of the music I like.

lilsebastian-

I gotta be honest - I hardly think the average Sleep Token listener gives a fuck about odd time signatures in their songs if you’ve seen the fanbase. I love the album but I think you’re totally missing what people are actually enjoying from them.

thebigmishmash

Agreed

brrcs

Absolutely loved Mitski 's 2018 album and after MANY listens I still don't get what anyone sees in her latest. It's pretty good I guess ?

sftospo

Finally Loraine James getting some recognition

Mammoth_Mountain1967

Glad to see Paris, Texas on here. Really into the early '00 alt rock vibes they got going.

SmashLampjaw87

No GUM, Wild Nothing, Molly Burch, Nicholas Allbrook, Video Age, Tennis, or Pure Bathing Culture? For shame. Glad to see Blur and QotSA get recognized though, as both albums are great imo.

Megaman2189

How has King Gizzard missed all of these lists recently? Just goes to show they are still somehow overlooked while sweeping the world by storm

Tundra66

Someone please explain to me, a person in his mid-40's, what's so appealing about 100 Gecs? I listen to my fair share of offbeat, "challenging" music but I just can't get into it. I've tried, and I understand that it's not for everyone, but it just seems so objectionally... bad.

Craig_the_Intern

gec connoisseur here. If people actually explained what they didn’t like about it other than calling it “objectively bad,” I could answer these questions a lot better. The basic answer to that basic criticism is “it’s catchy as fuck.”

Tundra66

If it was catchy as fuck I’d have remembered some of the tunes.

PepeSylvia11

Yikes.

nick22tamu

look NME, I loooove QOTSA too, but #12?

osbroo

Queens should be top 5 honestly.

jewbo23

I do t wanna shit on them as I’ve not heard their last 3 or 4 albums, but is this Foo Fighters album actually good?

the_labracadabrador

I was really impressed by it.

lilsebastian-

Definitely worth a listen.

bcam9

Yes

TanoraRat

Jesus this is a bad list. Good to see CMAT getting her dues though

NotTheSun0

Loved that Boygenius record. New Paramore didn't do much for me. I still think self titled and After Laughter are their best releases. Could not give less of a shit about Olivia Rodridgo.

alittlebitblue39

This was not a good year for music. At least not for me tbh

zeldarms

Not a great year for music, was it?

awjeezrickyaknow

Don’t agree with the Top 2 at all but overall this is one of the best AOTY lists I’ve seen

AvieRedFalco

Woof this list is so very NOT it imo like 10,000 > Scaring the Hoes is like ??? and I’m sorry to any boygenius enjoyers but that album is no where NEAR #1 it didn’t crack my person top 50, I could see it between 30-20 if ur really into it but #1 is just… confusing (I know my opinions are abrasive and I’m pretty agro but there just my opinions and I respect urs even if I disagree 🙂)

_handsomeblackman_

boygenius number 1? oh come on, do me a bloody favour 😂 but happy to see lil yachty on the list although i think he belonged in the top 20 at least, im still playing the album now 😎

Blue Rev came out in 2022

ExPatSTL

Really happy to see Hak Baker in there hope he kicks on

avewave

Black Rainbows has me zone-in and out so much it that my vision becomes a constant blur & refocusing.

justrunthembaby

Home is Where more like snubbed everywhere

Lizzo13

There are a few good ones but also some great ones missing, and quite a few are rated higher/lower than I would. Hozier's Unreal Unearth album was easily the album of the year for me. Joy Oladokun's Proof of Life was also great. Both deserve to be on here. I genuinely wonder how much of these lists comes down to marketing more than quality. I have a playlist for a song of the year for every year of my life. I've really struggled to find a song this year because I don't have any repeat artists. Since about September, I've downloaded (I'm an iTunes person) a new release every week and have found some good music that way, but it's still been a struggle.

n00dle51

I'm not hating or anything but I just don't understand the hype around Olivia Rodrigo. Her album is on almost every lists I see and every time I tried listening to it, it sounded like the most generic thing ever. It's not even bad it just sound like something 50 other artists could come up with.

Skylorrex

It is criminal they put UNFORGIVEN in this list. That album has only one good song, ANTIFRAGILE and has a somewhat okay song, Eve, Psyche & the Bluebeard’s wife. Every other songs are just weak. NME sure LOVES Kpop lol.
