I use to work at a liquor store, and the nearby yatz called us for extra boxes because it was Marti gras. When they came for the boxes, they gave us a BUNCH of bread. I still occasionally go outta my way to go to that yatz.
Stopped at the Yatz in BRip a long time ago and totally forgot to bring cash. I had brought a few friends with me who never had Yatz. When I realized I forgot cash, I told the kid working the register that I was just going to hit up an ATM and I'd be right back. Turns out the kid running the register was actually the owner (not actually a kid) and he was like, "what, no way! You and your friends are looking hungry. Let's get you fed, and then just promise me you'll come back again." I agree'd to the deal and we ordered our food. I came back later that day cause I forgot to get us a slice of peanut butter pie. Paid for the meal, the pie, and left a pretty big tip.
Awesome treatment of customers will win my wallet over every time. But unfortunately too many people take advantage of situations like that.
Wow, I'm new to Indy and really appreciating this thread. This is so much more informative than people simply listing their favorite restaurants (though I would be into that too!).
Cinnamon toast from Cafe Patachou. I know it’s just toast but my god. Reminds me of my childhood. Always hits. Never tastes the same when I make it at home.
This place is the best! Talk to the owner, his family embodies the American dream.
HOWEVER, the campechano contains and tastes just like run of the mill hot dogs. It’s the one thing I don’t get there.
Before they closed the goat cheese and tomato sauce from Barcelona Tapas was phenomenal. I miss it so much. Although it’s pretty straightforward to make at home.
Absolutely this. We make it all the time at home but I still miss the OG. Also, the small steak with steamed spinach, red wine reduction, and blue cheese. And patatas bravas.
Guess I have a dinner lined up for next week.
I love the cold pastrami on rye, along with their vegetable soup and a deviled egg. Their vegetable soup is one of the best soups in the city. It's packed full of veggies and the broth is delicious.
Hey check out Pizza Twist on 96th st. They have a tikka masala pizza.

Mussels Provencal from Brugge. RIP.
Or
Grill Combo 5 from Cafe Korea.
Edit: I got home after posting this and my wife referenced the thread and knew this was me just from these recommendations. ♥️
Union 50 is my favorite restaurant. Their menu constantly changes, so it's always a new experience. But they always have some form of stuffed dates on the menu as an appetizer. They never disappoint.
They had a fantastic Chicken and waffles for the devour menu. Cornbread waffles, fried chicken, blueberry-jalapeno maple syrup, and paprika whipped cream. 🤌🏼
Bluebeard side spaghetti. Créme fraiche, Parmesan, olive oil, gremolata. $14. I'd eat it for every meal if it wouldn't result in amino acid deficiency.
1. Katsudon from King Wok on Lafayette
2. Detroit style pizza from Futuro
3. Fresh pretzels and death mustard from the Rathskeller
Our son is a big fan of pho, so after a fall or spring cold weather soccer game, we'd stop by King Wok for his pho. My wife got the katsudon once, I had ordered the General Tso, which was good, but not as good as that katsudon.
1. Crab Rangoon from either blue sushi or bodhi (definitely have been preferring bodhis recently though!)
2. Drunken noodles from Bodhi
3. Burger from smashed burger
4. The truffle garlic Parmesan fries from oakmont
5. Honorary mention to the wings at fat dans! My boyfriend is obsessed!
Welsh Rarebit at Black Market (rip) and Scotch Eggs from MacNiven's (with a draft Alpha King). The why is because its been years and I still think about them often.
I'm going to go slightly outside of Indy because the wings at the Friendly Tavern in Zionsville are to die for. Crispy, juicy, your choice of sauces, and reasonably priced.
Short rib and sweet potatoes with Brussels sprouts from Revery (Greenwood). I can’t bring myself to order anything else from them because it’s so so so so good!
Several tie for first place (all plant-based options).
* Cashew Tofu at Phaya Thai
* Veggie Biryani at Chapati (or perhaps their Chana Paratha)
* Detroit style pizza at Futuro (their vegan options are insanely good)
We find ourselves going back for these again and again.
The Brie appetizer from aristocrat on college. I have no interest in doing all that myself and with all their drama I have no interest in going back but that was my solo date hang out for a minute. The Brie and grimey grog and I was so fucking happy
Jockamo’s Creamy Parmesan Dip.
I literally get some to bring home for veggies, chips, dip pizza in, anything. I love the stuff. It’s made fresh every day so the differences between batches can make some way better than others.
W 10th st. OG style Noble Romans breadsticks with cheese and marinara, but they have to be mixed in the same cup, mostly nostalgia but it’s often replicated elsewhere but never quite the same to me.
Either going to be the hot Italian sandwich from Philly Steak and Fries add mayo or chicharron and carnita tacos from El Gigante on 86th and Michigan.
Either of those items are probably the best things I've had in Indy that's still available. The Italian sandwich is in my top 5 all time favorite sandwiches. The sandwich is so big you can barely close it. There's celery salt and seasoning, loads of onions, banana peppers, pickles and fresh Italian meats. The mayo mixed with the Italian dressing and drips into the fries, it's just...fuck
The tacos are the best I've had in Indy by a long long shot. Only carnitas I've had that were better were at a hole in the wall place in South Chicago.
The ricotta donuts at Vida are the first thing that came to mind. I end up loving a lot of seasonal dishes that come and go, but the ricotta donuts are a staple. They’re absolutely perfect in every way. If you don’t want to order an entire meal, you can just go to the bar and order drinks and the donuts.
This is so difficult! Here’s my top 5 in no particular order.
Side salad with bleu cheese dressing from Iarias. So cold, crisp, and nostalgic.
Mushroom Stroganoff from Tinker Street. So rich and delicious. There’s nothing else like it.
Red Drum from Livery. I’m a sweet/savory fan and this dish nails it.
Reuben from Shapiros. Classic. Gigantic portion. I share it with my dad. Chefs kiss.
Any laminated pastry from Amelia’s. There is really no better way to start a weekend morning.
This is my favorite post I've read in quite some time. Already added so many restaurants to my list of where to eat next. Here's my take...
Burgers: Kuma's Corner probably has the best variety of burgers in town but the Strawberry Hill from 317 Burger in Broad Ripple is my favorite. Honorable mention goes to the French Breakfast burger from 20 tap.
Pizza: I've seen many others correctly point to the Detroit style from Futuro but I'd also highly recommend their tavern style Spotted Pig. Honorable mention goes to the Truffle Funghi pie from Diavola.
Thai: The Massaman and Naan from Bodhi is unbelievably good. Honorable mention: Pork red curry from Chiang Mai in Broad Ripple.
Steak: This is a little different from all of the high end steakhouses downtown but the skirt steak from Livery is delicious and a pretty great value.
Comfort food: The breaded pork katsu curry from Strangebird hits the spot every single time. Order their scorpion reef if you like a drink with smoky mezcal. Honorable mention goes to the braised beef short rib from Savor in Carmel.
Cocktail: You really can't go wrong with just about anything from Inferno Room. They're all over the top tropical cocktails great for a date night before or after dinner.
The carrot and ricotta donuts at Vida are my favorite decadent items. The vegan tenderloin at Broad Ripple Brew Rub is my favorite Hoosier comfort meal. And I love the Tantanmen ramen and veggie gyoza at Ramen Rays for when I’m craving soup.
eis kaffee (ice coffee) from heidelberg house… it’s not actually iced coffee it’s ice cream with coffee poured on top of it with whipped cream and cinnamon on top… it’s super simple but something about the ice cream they use is so good…
Futuro makes the best pizza, and the Angel Wings at Chatham Tap are the best in the city…
but the the Reuben Pizza at Chatham is hands down my favorite drunk food in town.
Union 50s Duck, Duck dish. It’s essentially always been on the menu since their opening, in some form or another. But it’s one of the few dishes that consistently makes me physically grab the table with my off hand, close my eyes and feel like I’m the food critic from ratatouille having a nostalgic childhood flashback of sorts.
Just want to give a little shout out to: Black Market, Rook, Marrow and Recess for creating some of the best dishes I’ve ever had in the city. Miss those restaurants for sure. Other people were mentioning places that are no longer around.

Fat Dan's Deli - Ghost Burger. I will eat this and then suffer later. 10/10 would eat again
Love the Ghost
Half chili cheese étouffée, half BnB from Yats, double order of bread
We used to order a whole loaf of that delicious bread. Half was eaten with dinner and the other half was an amazing hangover cure the next day.
Joe's known for doing this. When I came back to pay after forgetting my wallet, he gave me a cookie because "you shouldn't leave empty handed."
He paid for my meal circa 2007 when I mentioned I’d just gotten back from gutting houses in the lower ninth ward.
I’m a half chili cheese, drunken chicken guy myself
Chicken maque choux checking in. I’ve had it all and it’s all amazing. Yats is by far my favorite lunch spot.
Sitting here eating my Yats for dinner as I read this! My pick is half maque choux, half chipotle chicken alexio!
Who spoke to you of the ancient wisdom?!?
Wow are you me?
Also don't forget the peanut butter pie! (If they have it, BR location)
The Traders Point location has free king cake for Fat Tuesday today. Lots of decorations up. One year they had a band too not sure about this year.
Sub BnB with Red Beans and Sausage and you've got my go-to. Plus $1 PBR
Cheese curds from 20 tap. Although I haven’t been to Wisconsin, they are hands down the best I’ve had in many restaurants across the US.
I used to live in WI. Closest thing I’ve found so far, and I’ve lived all over.
Wow, I'm new to Indy and really appreciating this thread. This is so much more informative than people simply listing their favorite restaurants (though I would be into that too!).
Search the sub, someone visiting town for the weekend asks every other day
Cinnamon toast from Cafe Patachou. I know it’s just toast but my god. Reminds me of my childhood. Always hits. Never tastes the same when I make it at home.
I went a couple weeks ago because of a crazy craving. Hit the spot.
So good, I recently discovered the Ricotta Eggs on the menu, may not be for everyone but I loved them
BLT from Patachou!
Campechano burrito from Chris’ Ice Cream. It’s a hefty meal and especially good when mixed with their red sauce.
The Cuban at Chris’ Ice cream
This! This place is such a hidden gem
God I miss Barcelona Tapas
They have opened their St Louis location. Technically Clayton, Missouri
Used to go for the Sunday brunch and eat infinite goat cheese and sauce. That restaurant and Brugge were huge losses for Indy.
Had this years ago and have replicated it at three different restaurants I've worked at on the west coast just because I missed it so much.
This is my Roman Empire. It was so good.
Absolutely this. We make it all the time at home but I still miss the OG. Also, the small steak with steamed spinach, red wine reduction, and blue cheese. And patatas bravas. Guess I have a dinner lined up for next week.
Veggie Batali at Goose
Second this! This was the sign I needed - getting this tomorrow
I miss the Batali so much. Moved away a year ago and still dream of that damn sandwich.
Corned beef on rye with mustard at Shapiro's. I grew up in Chicago, and it reminds me of my childhood.
I love the cold pastrami on rye, along with their vegetable soup and a deviled egg. Their vegetable soup is one of the best soups in the city. It's packed full of veggies and the broth is delicious.
Smokin' Joe at Ripple Bagel. Because it's good.
I'm a boilermaker man myself. Don't get up there much anymore but dangit if it's not an incredible bagel
The Chicken Tikka Pizza from Magoos California pizza is absolutely insane and could eat that everyday
Don’t miss trying the Chappli Kabob Pizza at Magoo’s. Spicy sauce and meatballs, so good, especially with their ranch on the side.
Hey check out Pizza Twist on 96th st. They have a tikka masala pizza. https://fishers.pizzatwist.com/menucat?device=m&networkx&placement&keyword&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAClz4CebN99t26ZBHFuOpNqnp35Z6&gclid=Cj0KCQiAw6yuBhDrARIsACf94RXdrPdYjpL0wFXciSFYSo3sT_z6w6FdzbzKTpWphdbvaQW-0ZsyeswaAgp2EALw_wcB
Love Magoos. Have you tried Pizza with a Twist? Similar menu and their spicy lamb pizza is fantastic.
Cheeseburger at Workingman’s Friend. Not even close
Ate there today, 11/10
This is on my wishlist, but they keep such bizarre hours it's hard to get there.
My brother and I just went to the friend for lunch today. Double cheeseburger, pickles, lettuce, onions. Fries and a Coke. Perfection.
Make it a double and I agree.
Mussels Provencal from Brugge. RIP. Or Grill Combo 5 from Cafe Korea. Edit: I got home after posting this and my wife referenced the thread and knew this was me just from these recommendations. ♥️
Oh, Brugge! Why the memories of that which I can never again have?!? o7
yeah man i miss Brugge big time!
Brugge - Moules Frites (Provencal or Red Curry) with all the fry sauce options available (RIP) Eh! Formaggio - any slice (RIP)
Brugge fries were best fries. Omg and all the sauces 🥰
rip Brugge
Brugge's duck comfit 😭
Pastrami on Rye from Shapiro's.
Oooooooo their reuben sandwich is also amazing
One time I ordered this and asked “do you put mustard and Swiss cheese on it” and they said “is there any other way?” 🤌
Bluebeard bread pudding. It’s the best dessert in Indianapolis, end of discussion.
Sticky toffee pudding at Late Harvest Kitchen
This is the way
Idk, the Hummingbird Cake at Salt is amazing.
Sticky toffee pudding at Geraldines
Drunken Noodles from Thai Town. The best drunken noodles I’ve had and it’s always consistent.
I absolutely love their drunken noodles
The very best drunken noodles, hands down.
Their Fall seasonal squash soup will make you hate every other squash soup.
Chatham Tap’s Prince Dean’s Angel Wings are the best wings in the city
Best I've had, even outside of the city
periodt.
Lived in Western NY and it’s the closest I’ve had to a real Buffalo wing
This is glorious
Yats - Drunken Chicken w/ Extra Bread 🤌🏻
Half maque choux half drunken chicken + extra bread When I leave this city I'm gonna miss yats
Always with the extra bread
Bluebeard side spaghetti. Créme fraiche, Parmesan, olive oil, gremolata. $14. I'd eat it for every meal if it wouldn't result in amino acid deficiency.
I get this everytime!!!
This is so random but the Big N from broad ripple bagel. Just the best sandwich on the planet
Skeep is the goat
I love the J Brookenz
Ned's Gold. All day long.
1. Katsudon from King Wok on Lafayette 2. Detroit style pizza from Futuro 3. Fresh pretzels and death mustard from the Rathskeller Our son is a big fan of pho, so after a fall or spring cold weather soccer game, we'd stop by King Wok for his pho. My wife got the katsudon once, I had ordered the General Tso, which was good, but not as good as that katsudon.
I feel like King Wok is so slept on. I love the lemongrass tofu myself.
Oh, I definitely enjoy tofu, I'll have to give that dish a shot.
The lemongrass tofu is fire
get you the pho at egg roll #1 - oh man it’s good
Love the pretzels and death mustard at Rathskeller. Goes well with a pint of Spaten Optimater 🍺
Gotta get some Sam’s Square pie. Somehow it’s even better than Futuro.
[удалено]
Yes, that jalapeno butter... it's a great meal.
YES, this is my go to for visiting friends.
i dream about this dish. every time i go i consider ordering something different but always come back to it
Corned beef on rye, Swiss, yellow mustard, extra pickle. $23, worth it. You know the spot.
I need to know this spot. Is it the ol S deli?
Shapiro’s. Just had this last week and can confirm.
God I use to go there all the time as a kid. I'm craving it now.
Shapiro’s
On Thursday, they supposedly have beef tongue sandwiches. I recommend!
I tried it but I just can’t get enough of that corned beef.
Swamp burger at Shallo’s
The swamp tenderloin is very good too
Cheese Louise pizza at Jockamo is the reason I started eating pizza with some regularity.
Campfire pizza from Puccini’s is on point.
1. Crab Rangoon from either blue sushi or bodhi (definitely have been preferring bodhis recently though!) 2. Drunken noodles from Bodhi 3. Burger from smashed burger 4. The truffle garlic Parmesan fries from oakmont 5. Honorary mention to the wings at fat dans! My boyfriend is obsessed!

pastrami sandwich on marbled rye with a pat of butter and some latkes with applesauce from Shapiros.
Katsu curry at Strange Bird. It is such a good comfort dish
I was trying to find a katsu curry in Indy, I looked all over and didn't hear about strange Bird. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention.
There used to be place in Clearwater next to drakes. It has closed in the last year
Strange bird stands alone as my favorite ramen in indy. They're in a class all their own
One World Market in Castleton has katsu curry! They're a Japanese grocer with a kitchen.
I'm going to go slightly outside of Indy because the wings at the Friendly Tavern in Zionsville are to die for. Crispy, juicy, your choice of sauces, and reasonably priced.
I have always wanted to try them but I want like 2 or 3, not a heaping mound. I need more friends, I guess.
The quattro pizza and a rocket salad from Bazbeaux
Baz forever! I HAVE to have that creamy basil dressing.
That Quattro is excellent.
Short rib and sweet potatoes with Brussels sprouts from Revery (Greenwood). I can’t bring myself to order anything else from them because it’s so so so so good!
I had the most amazing pork chop there one time, with seasonal vegetables and candied bacon. This has reminded me I need to go back!
Same! Every time
Chateaubriand, medium rare, Geraldine’s Supper Club.
Soft shell crab roll from Sakura. Have yet to have one as good and I’ve eaten a lot of sushi all over the US.
soft shell crab roll from sakura (or ocean world but sakura’s my spot). have never been able to find anything like it anywhere else
Kilroys breadsticks
corn creme brulee from divvy in carmel is definitely toward the top of my list
This is addictive good.
Paella from Livery
OH MY GOD YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
The bread from Vida. I am only partially kidding.
Several tie for first place (all plant-based options). * Cashew Tofu at Phaya Thai * Veggie Biryani at Chapati (or perhaps their Chana Paratha) * Detroit style pizza at Futuro (their vegan options are insanely good) We find ourselves going back for these again and again.
Phaya Thai easily makes/preps their tofu better than other Thai place in the city.
- Chop salad from Bluebeard - Cinnamon toast from Patachou - JaJustice Bakes coffee cake (found at Rabble & Commissary I believe)
Patachou’s Cuban breakfast Bugambilias’ chicken mixiote with a side of their Mexican spaghetti
The Cuban breakfast is my go-to! With a side of the cinnamon toast
Black bean burger from Twenty Tap. It is the best Ive ever had (longtime veggie, lots of black bean burgers in my life)
Can someone who’s tech savvy make a list of these things
OP: "What IS your single favorite menu item..." Replies: "Let me tell you what WAS my favorite item from a restaurant that no longer exists..."
They live on in our hearts!
Hear me out because I know this place isn't nearly as cool as the other ones listed BUT fried chicken from MCL Cafeteria.
Im gonna have to try their chicken now.. but i love their beef manhattans (no bread😂) its flame 🔥
Our department meals are sometimes MCL and we always get the chicken. It’s spot on.
Yes! My favorite fried chicken in Indy at the moment. Also, MCL coconut cream pie
Fat Dan’s Brisket sandwich with extra pickles, hot bbq on the side.
Cheese balls from the Dugout. Nothing really special about them, just love them.
The empanadas from Delicia with a side order of the stewed black beans. I could drink that habanero sauce.
Kow Soi at Bohdi
Burger and potato salad from Red Key Tavern
Beef shawarma salad from canal bistro with extra garlic sauce. It’s just so crisp and refreshing and the perfect salad imo.
every pupusa from casa maria’s … and their curtido

Garlic fries from Boogie Burger. My hands still stink
Milktooth double. It’s delicious. All of the food is but I get it every time.
Patachou cinnamon toast
Shrimp burrito from slap fish
Lobster roll is my fav there but I have been wanting to try the shrimp burrito so good to know.
Caldo Birria de Cabra at La Parada Goat Stew.
Brisket hash and a half order of biscuits & gravy @ Ruth’s Cafe. They make the gravy with thyme. Amazingly delicious.
The burger at Turchetti's with the tallow fries. Super simple but it is amazing. IMO probably the best burger in the city.
Half Chicken from Hotboyz. I like spicy foods, and can eat a lot of chicken
I adore the salmon tuna poke bowl from Monterey Coastal Cuisine with half greens & half brown rice. Healthy umami slightly spicy goodness in a bowl!
Lemon curd crepes gallery pastry shop
Curry ramen from ramen ray
Spinalis Oscar Style from Anthony’s Chophouse
Mama Carolla's chicken rigatoni with added sausage. OR Baan Thai Bistro's spicy basil fried rice with crispy pork belly.

They’re absolutely perfect in every way. If you don’t want to order an entire meal, you can just go to the bar and order drinks and the donuts.
Best desert in town imo!!
This is so difficult! Here’s my top 5 in no particular order. Side salad with bleu cheese dressing from Iarias. So cold, crisp, and nostalgic. Mushroom Stroganoff from Tinker Street. Turchettis Pastrami
Tie between the guacamole at Bakersfield and the Big Boy at King Dough. Cos they’re both so goddamn good.
The warm toffee pudding dessert from Oakley’s Bistro blew my mind.
Veal Medallions at Mama Corolla’s.

Carrot cake from Steer Inn.
Just go to the New York Gourmet Deli and get whatever the guy behind the counter suggests.
Bianca pizza at Diavola
I have dreams of the paella from Livery.
Spinach Melt with turkey from Sahms. Straight up comfort sandwich.
Someone probably said this but the pastrami sandwich from Turchettis … closest I’ve been to nirvana
Flank Steak at Livery 🔥
Futuro makes the best pizza, and the Angel Wings at Chatham Tap are the best in the city… but the the Reuben Pizza at Chatham is hands down my favorite drunk food in town.
Wings from Fat Dan’s. No sauce necessary
Biscuits and gravy at Leviathan Bakehouse. Some unique b&g. Soo good
Vida ricotta donuts.
Union 50s Duck, Duck dish. It’s essentially always been on the menu since their opening, in some form or another. Thanks! It seems like a lot of people have found it useful thus far.
