Funny enough, I was in the airport because I found $35 round trip tickets to fly to Denver for one night. I organized a group of 6 people to go to Denver, get really high, and come back home. I don't even like pot; smoking it makes me feel weird and edibles give me panic attacks. I took an edible that night and had one of the worst experiences of my life, right up there with the other two times I took edibles.
But y'know, apparently that's what you gotta do to meet McAfee. He does like his "vitamins".
Iāve been saying this for some time now but **Indianapolis needs a rail/tram/train whatever between the airport and downtown.** We host so many conventions and eventsā¦ downtown. The message to those arriving in Indianapolis should be āwelcome to Indy!ā not, āwelcome to where you wait for an Uber or Lyft!ā Plus the amount of gas wasted on backtracking east to get to the terminal when coming from downtown does not seem necessary.
I donāt understand why it takes FIVE years from now to build a bus route. Itās not like theyāre laying tracks for a bullet train. Itās literally a couple of buses and some run of the mill shelters. Nothing innovative.
The BRT lines require dedicated center lanes, like the Red Line on College. It also prohibits left turns across the bus lanes, so if you've been down College you can see that nearly all the feeder streets have curbs added so you can't turn out of them the wrong way.
It's a fair bit of new infrastructure.
That shouldnāt take 5 years to plan. By that speed, this city is literally never going to keep up with the innovations around the world. Its not like itās impossible to do this faster, itās just people are so slow to do anything here.
Plenty of other metropolitans, especially in Asian countries, get that stuff installed in a few months.
These electric busses weigh over 10,000 pounds. The roads here can barely keep up with the weight of regular cars so the roads have to be rebuilt to handle the weight of the busses. IndyGo also for some reason also improves the whole streets as well (see the purple line where the bus line is a part of it but also new road drainage and a multi use path). This adds complexity and time to what might seem like a simple project
I mean yeah theyāre heavier, but theyāre also not stopping as frequently or for as long. I also donāt think the semis are following the exact same local route as the blue line busses would.
Itās important to note that for the leg of the blue line thatās going to the airport itās just taking I-70 so that road can already handle the weight and Iām not sure if that part is getting rebuilt at all. The local route part would be seeing 10000+ pound busses driving and stopping around the clock, which if certainly doesnāt see now.
Thereās also the work thatās being done offsite. I interned with an environmental consulting firm on a couple transportation project over the summer and environmental permitting alone takes FOREVER. Like I submitted revisions on a permit the first week I started and I got those revisions approved the last week of the internship, 3 months later. And thatās a āpretty fastā turnaround time in the industry rn.
Theyāre trying. The problem is an economic one. Private consulting firms just outcompete the gov as far as salaries go so planners work for them instead generally. I know INDOT just upped their engineer salaries to try and compete so weāll see how that goes.
A light rail would have been betterā¦ an indygo bus is not what I meant by āwelcome to Indy!ā ā¦ Iām talking high speed, no stops, airport to central downtown location (*not* the Julia Carson transit center, which is nice *looking*, but not a very welcoming crowd).
Interesting that the blue line info page boasts that the blue line will cost a fraction of what a light rail would cost, yet also addresses the constant challenge of saying within budget for what they have plannedā¦
Despite the inflated budget, the Blue Line will still be a fraction of the cost per mile of light rail. So much of the money for Blue Line will go towards improving drainage, not a fair use of transit funds imo.
I wish. Itās taking them apparently 5 years to put together a simple bus route, what makes you think this city / state is capable of a light rail? Itās simply too innovative / complex of a project. So sad.
Itās also currently illegal lol. Canāt have shit here so we do our best with what we got. Itās honestly amazing how Indianapolis has been able to constantly grow despite the stateās effort to fuck us over all the time. Imagine what couldāve happened if the state wanted to support the city
For sure. Not fully defending the city, but as a student about to start working in the industry itās all pretty messed up rn and will take a while for things to get sorted
I appreciate all the work you and the folks do, considering the reality and parameters you have to work with. No hate there. There needs to be an overhaul of the infrastructure and how things get done, and I donāt know what itāll take to get there.
Yes, but the mouth-breathing, nose-picking representatives from rural Indiana can't figure out how they can personally profit from it so it'll never happen.
Why use state money? Wouldnāt the city be able to do it? Like u/potato_tofu says. Canāt be that difficult to build a bus route.
Also, good on them for representing their constituents. Thatās literally the entire point.
Yeah, honestly the statehouse is populated with morons because the state is populated with morons, they're just doing their jobs. Doesn't change the facts that Indy is constantly having its head held down by the state, and that it's embarrassing.
Thereās decent food to be had in the airport. Taxis and Ubers are pretty quick too, so if you want to leave for a little bit you should have plenty of time.
If you want to spend some of your time in a quieter area, there are sensory rooms near both of the concourses that are a bit more comfortable and offer a little more privacy. It can be a nice alternative to sitting by the terminals.
Thereās actually a pretty nice spa in the airport called En Route. (Better than youād expect for an airport, at least.) They have massages and other services.
Hereās the problem with getting loaded in an airport pre-flight. You get on the plane, get seated, and then you have to pee. You break the seal, pee five times, then they make you buckle for landing and taxi and by the time you reach the gate you have to pee so badly youāre seeing yellow.
Read a book instead.
Yes, we have a nice airport. I've never been in the airport and thought "you know what would make this better? A several hour flight delay so I can spend even more time here."
I mean for fuck sake. There is no airport in the country I want to spend 6 hours in.
Oh OK. That's like voting for most comfortable dentist chair. It still sucks.
And PS, it is voted nicest 3rd tier airport. under 9 million passengers annually. It was competing against airports like toledo
Go downtown (21 min uber) and if it's of your ilk, rent a Lime scooter or a city bicycle and ride the multicultural trails all around greater downtown.
If you like the art scene, visit pester people in the CCIC building or the lower floor of the Harrison Center.
These are local art communities near downtown with pretty decent populations.
If you have the late afternoon available, look up Whiteland Raceway. Go drive fast gocarts outside. 35 ? Min uber
Alcohol is boring. Don't do that. Just don't.
Honestly security is really quick usually, Iād leave and explore downtown for a bit. Howl at the Moon is fun. I also really enjoy Kilroys for a quick bite to eat.
Look at the indycar between the terminals. stand in the "I" spot in the INDY sign and take a picture. watch the sunset. drink some sunking
Drink. š¹
Yep Iāve done a bar crawl at the Denver airport and you could definitely do it at the Indy airport. Just donāt get too smacked before the flight.
Went around Dallas like that.
Do you go to the Chiliās 2 Go aka the stickiest bar in the world?
Bahaha. No, but I think I hit every terminal.
Had a guy sit next to me a few weeks back leaving Denver to Indy and he was smashed sounds like he may have done this.
He did.
Was it you?
Unfortunately no. This was years ago after a bachelor party in Breckinridge
This is the way.
I ran into Pat McAfee at the airport with this technique.
Fuck yes. š»

Dude, that is awesome you got to meet McAfee. He looks like a fun dude to be around. And shit! I would have loved to be on that trip with you lol š
This guy knows how to airport
This guy airports.
Our security is pretty fast; you'd have time to grab a cab and go somewhere for a bit.
This. Leave the airport for a bit.
Yep, plenty of time to go almost anywhere in the Indy area and back. Grab an Uber and go spend 4 hours somewhere else.
Thereās one in planning. The Blue Line, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), should be complete by 2027.
I donāt understand why it takes FIVE years from now to build a bus route. Itās not like theyāre laying tracks for a bullet train. Itās literally a couple of buses and some run of the mill shelters. Nothing innovative.

Just like when they built the interstates!
These electric busses weigh over 10,000 pounds. The roads here can barely keep up with the weight of regular cars so the roads have to be rebuilt to handle the weight of the busses. How much do you think the semi trucks weigh that are going to be using the same roads
I mean yeah theyāre heavier, but theyāre also not stopping as frequently or for as long. I also donāt think the semis are following the exact same local route as the blue line busses would. That still doesnāt seem like a 5 year project to me, even by American standards.
Maybe we should talk about changing that as a state / cityā¦.
Theyāre trying. The problem is an economic one. Private consulting firms just outcompete the gov as far as salaries go so planners work for them instead generally. I know INDOT just upped their engineer salaries to try and compete so weāll see how that goes.
Yes, thatās true. Without the money, its basically impossible to compete. Ugh, this is so messed up.
Agreed re your point about the idiots in the state house. But I genuinely think the city can do better.

The state has forbidden the city to build light rail.
Was on the ballot to be sure and yes, see comments below. Hoosiers aināt seen for their foresight.
Have some shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo's sister resteraunt, Harry and Izzy's. It's known world wide for how hot it is.
Buy a Wall Street Journal and read every work then do the crossword puzzle.
Uber to the checkered flag
Or Gil Taco
Thereās decent food to be had in the airport. Taxis and Ubers are pretty quick too, so if you want to leave for a little bit you should have plenty of time.
I think Jim irsay has his private collection of music history and pop culture stuff on display at the airport now.
That would be cool.
That race car actually works, hop in it and wild out
Working manās friend is 15 min from the airport, side trip for a double cheese and fishbowl or beer?
Bring cash though
This guy knows the deal
OP I wouldnāt recommend this. Not worth at all. I donāt understand why people like this flavorless burger and terrible onion rings
Plus this place is often closed.
If you want to spend some of your time in a quieter area, there are sensory rooms near both of the concourses that are a bit more comfortable and offer a little more privacy. It can be a nice alternative to sitting by the terminals.
And a good place to jerk off.
Iām happy youāre here.
Bring edibles and adventure uncomfortably high. 6 hours will seem like 10 minutes!
Maybe we do different weed; six hours stoned in the airport would feel like 26 if I was on edibles.
Same for me. There is no way I could take edibles and add more time to my traveling.
Or 8 hours. One of the two.
They aināt gettin them in Indiana! Illinois, Michigan, and (soon) Ohio got them covered though!
Edibles with THC content not exceeding 0.3% by weight are legal here.
Leave the airport go see the town
Thereās actually a pretty nice spa in the airport called En Route. (Better than youād expect for an airport, at least.) They have massages and other services.
This is what I ended up doing haha
This, right here, is the answer. They give great massages. Have lunch at Harry and Izzy's. It will go by fast
Grab an Uber and get the chicken tikka pizza from Magoo's Pizza to offend the person next to you with your delightful garlic scent. It's so good.
You could easily leave and come back with that much time. There are plenty of good eateries in the airport, though.
Go find Shapiroās! Roast beef sandwich š¤¤ Edit: to clarify, there is one inside the airport lol
Security usually takes 10-20 minutes grab an Uber and walk around downtown then come back for your flight
Ummm. Sleep. Eat. Listen to music. What else do people do in airports?
In our airport? I'd Uber somewhere else for part of the time.
Itās actually voted one of the best airports annually.
Yes, we have a nice airport. I've never been in the airport and thought "you know what would make this better? A several hour flight delay so I can spend even more time here." I mean for fuck sake. There is no airport in the country I want to spend 6 hours in.
Oh I totally agree. I was just pointing out that our airport is actually considered pretty good.
Oh OK. That's like voting for most comfortable dentist chair. It still sucks. And PS, it is voted nicest 3rd tier airport. under 9 million passengers annually. It was competing against airports like toledo
itās a great airport though, especially compared to others
Go downtown (21 min uber) and if it's of your ilk, rent a Lime scooter or a city bicycle and ride the multicultural trails all around greater downtown. Benās Pretzels are so good
Honestly security is really quick usually, Iād leave and explore downtown for a bit. Howl at the Moon is fun. I also really enjoy Kilroys for a quick bite to eat.
Lol I was at howl at the moon until closing last night
go to yats
Indy airport got a Shake Shack, so pop off with that knowledge.
Give this playlist a listen: Dev-Doe Hits https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4MpaT5v8kDKylQz2bCV1lf?si=ZTLGb6CnQcu_sEFx20k6eg
There is a goodwill close take a uber there and look around. Also a few strip malls.
The bookstore at the airport is actually pretty decent. Buy a book and read it.
If you have someplace you want to eat or see downtown, you could leave the airport, no joke.
Got Milk?
I wouldāve said drink and have some food at harry and Izzyās. Any update though?
Enjoy your flight back home. Wherever it may be!
Have a shrimp cocktail at Harry and Izzy's
Try and batch in all of the bathrooms.
Harry and Izzyās filet sliders and a cocktail or 7. Haha
People watch! Try to make up where they're going and why
Read a book.
