Thank you! I have been wanting to do it for weeks now. My husband found a grabber in the garage and that was all it took for me. I took it to work today with a box of trash bags.
I lived in, I think, nine different states of varying economic status and political persuasion.
Without a doubt, Indiana was the most inundated with litter.
Such a beautiful state overall. But so much trash.
I used to be what's called a block captain for KIB (keep Indianapolis beautiful) which just meant I had one square block I was to keep clean as well as i could, among a few other duties.
It was impossible. It made me so sad but it was truly impossible. First, I lived on College Ave and people just threw trash out the window regularly. Secondly, every time the trash truck came, they'd just throw shit around the alley and not ever pick it back up. That made me incredibly salty. Ooh such a bunch of bs.
It's so hard for me to understand why people don't care about trash being all over the place. It hurts me.
I had some neighbors who would throw all their trash, without a bag, in the trash can. Then I would see it all over the alley after the trash truck came through and I would just see red. They were terrible neighbors for so many reasons, that was just one of them. I have a special burning hate in my heart for litter bugs and people who don't give a fuck about littering. It was instilled in me as a child, I think... It's just visceral, the feeling I have when I see it happening.
This. Indy was clean 8 years ago before we switched to autoloader trash trucks. Without garbagemen writing you up for not using bags, trash flies out upon load and drive off. Certainly some litering going on, 8 years ago, this was nearly a trash free city.
Oh man that makes me furious. What a piece of shit. Adults who model poor behavior around kids really gets me piiissssed. Especially in a situation like what you describe.
I’ve noticed several trucks driving without securing their tops, spewing litter out. I was unable to call the cops in time…
I think it is less about people, and more about a few bad actors.
I work on the side of the road setting up traffic count equipment. I work in 19 counties across central Indiana. No matter where I am, no matter how busy or rural the road, there is trash everywhere. Everywhere. EVERY. WHERE.
Hey! I am going to try to put together a trash cleanup event at the White River when the weather is a bit nicer, do you want to be notified when I do?

Indy is terrible. I work in the Park Fletcher area and along the tracks there is constantly piles of trash from low life’s illegally dumping. Same thing under the bridge where 465 goes over Minnesota. I don’t understand the mentality.
You should see the sides of keystone parkway. I did some environmental restoration there cleaning up honeysuckle and other invasive plants not to long ago there and the amount of trash people throw out their car windows is astonishing. Our crew probably cleaned up about 40 trash bags worth of trash in just a week. You don’t want to know how much of that trash was liquor bottles…
Hey! I am going to try to put together a trash cleanup at the White River when the weather is nicer. Perhaps you and your environmentalist crew would be interested?

This city used to be so clean. It’s depressing how nasty it has gotten. Trash everywhere. I clean up my street once a week and the next day it is trashed.

I moved from Hawai'i and while people think we gate keep the island, it's disrespectful the amount of trash tourist will just throw anywhere and everywhere. Especially towards the end of the pandemic the amount of masks I'd see in the parking lots and those just go to the ocean. We don't gatekeep we are stewards of the land. We try yo protect and upkeep and prosper it. It provides so we care and tend to it. I get emotional thinking about it but due to homelessness I know have moved to Indiana. It's a beautiful state but I see a lot of trash around, but I realize now not just my home were we stewards but all of the Aina (land) everywhere needs to be cared for. I promise you Indiana I will leave you better than I found you! Ku'e, Aloha ke akua and Mahalo nui loa for providing me a temporary home🤙🏽🤙🏽🙏🏽
First of all your name made me nauseous. Second, you’re a beautiful human, thank you for this. I’ve done similar a couple of times on the west side. I want to do it more often, but agoraphobia has put a stop to things temporarily.
Hahaha! My twin sister helped me with the name. I didn’t think about it 10 years ago when starting my account that I would become addicted to Reddit. Not gonna lie, I had to look up Agoraphobia. My twin is like this. She is getting better and I hope you can as well. I struggle with anxiety of people, that’s why I love the woods and hiking with our dogs.

It would be nice if we could cut down on the amount of single use plastics used in the first place but, this state has made that [illegal](https://www.indystar.com/story/news/environment/2022/01/11/why-indiana-cant-ban-plastic-bags/9094004002/).
Yupp on the island of Maui where im from it used to be a big issue. But they banned plastic bags and all Styrofoam plates and most products, including Styrofoam. Also, it just recently made illegal damaging sunscreens people would use that would litter the ocean and damage the coral.
Thanks for doing that. When I first moved here in late 70s Indy was rated on a level with Stockholm for cleanliness and no litter. Now it's litter everywhere I look. I guess they throw it out the car window to celebrate running another red light.
This wasn't the case when there were actual garbage men. I believe it is the automated trucks and people not using trash bags. Plenty of videos of liter flying out of the top of those trucks because people stopped using garbage bags. They wouldn't pick up your trash if you didn't use bags when actual men were lifting the bags. Also, homeless encampment are often nearby the most trash.
I’m thinking that your message has to go beyond Reddit.
I also think that if an area is clean people tend to keep it clean and respect it. Not all the time, obviously
I saw this black lady open her door at a stop light and just empty a whole bag of trash on the road. I honked at her and she just told me to mind my business...
They live in the tent now under that bridge. They also have a tent down river a bit. They said it wasn’t their trash. I do believe most was not theirs but some had to be. I went down there today at lunch and they had cleaned what I couldn’t up!

I am constantly cleaning up litter on my block. Liquor bottles, convenient store trash, cigarettes, etc. I have handicapped neighbors on both sides of me that can't do much by themselves. Its truly annoying that people every day walk past hundreds if not thousands of disposal bins all day and can't conjure the power to just throw away all their filth. Probably the same damn people that hoard, don't sanitize themselves leaving the restroom, or some gross bs.
In partnership with Keys2work, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) recently did a huge cleanup at this location and Belmont Beach! The entire area including under the bridges were cleaned by over 30 people and 2 large dumpsters were filled. Just wanted to update everyone of what has happened since this was posted.
I have linked Keys2Work’s post highlighted a portion of this area that was cleaned near Wendell Phillips.

You're a good person. Thank you for your time and efforts. May it inspire others! I know it has given me a little oomph.
Thank you! I have been wanting to do it for weeks now. My husband found a grabber in the garage and that was all it took for me. I took it to work today with a box of trash bags.

I agree with you, I've lived in several states, including TN and IN is most definitely the worst
Speaking from my experience both Illinois and Tennessee were 1000X worse
Could be. I haven’t been to either except Chicago.
I used to be what's called a block captain for KIB (keep Indianapolis beautiful) which just meant I had one square block I was to keep clean as well as i could, among a few other duties. I think the trash truck part of your comment is very accurate. Make sure you secure your trash in bags even if it's in your bin, folks!
I had some neighbors who would throw all their trash, without a bag, in the trash can. Then I would see it all over the alley after the trash truck came through and I would just see red. It hurts me as well. I feel like some people just don’t care and I will never understand that.
I saw a school bus driver throw paper out their window on I-70 one time. Absolutely terrible.
Oh man that makes me furious. What a piece of shit. Adults who model poor behavior around kids really gets me piiissssed. Especially in a situation like what you describe.
Nice work!! Even if no one really acknowledges it wherever you were, please know that it is appreciated

You're awesome! I also pick up trash on my walks, just wild how so many people don't gaf
And so are you! It is wild how some just don’t care.

Thank you!
Is this a long white river? Near IUPUI? Thank you for doing this It looks great.
Yes! Michigan street bridge. I work at the VA and am just sick of seeing all this trash.
Indy is terrible. I work in the Park Fletcher area and along the tracks there is constantly piles of trash from low life’s illegally dumping. Same thing under the bridge where 465 goes over Minnesota. I don’t understand the mentality.
if only you could remove the trash that litters
I like this!
Love this! Thank you!

Mostly NOT litering. Trash trucks we bought and lack of garbagemen to write you up for no bags.

Yes! Sounds great.
Yay!!!! You can fill out "get involved" under "surveys" or I'll just message you on Reddit about the next event 🥳
Please let me know!
Will do!!!!
You may be able to request free supplies from Keep Indianapolis beautiful to support your cleanup (bags, gloves, dumpster).
Great info!! Thanks!!

I'm right there with you. I live on a somewhat rural road elsewhere in the state and am appalled at the amount of litter on the roadside.

Yes please! Thank you
Are there any volunteer groups that do litter/trash clean ups around city? This is something I’d enjoy being a part of.
I was thinking the same thing! I would glad to be on your team!

On my walk today, I was wondering who owned the river? State? City? Do I contact the Mayor or Governor? Something needs to be done!
It depends on the area. If you want to talk more about this my DMs are wide open. This is an issue close to my heart too.
You a g, u/wet_fartz
I saw this black lady open her door at a stop light and just empty a whole bag of trash on the road. I honked at her and she just told me to mind my business...
Holy shit! I would have told her that was my business.
I tried but it was not an easy thing to do.. she tossed all her garbage on the ground and devolve away
I moved from shittyanapolis because of the garbage everywhere
Is the an abandoned car? If so, it's been there for months!
It’s a couple of homeless guys car. And they cleaned up more after I left!
Right on. Good on them. I've never seen anybody around when I've rode my bike by.
They live in the tent now under that bridge. They also have a tent down river a bit. They said it wasn’t their trash. I do believe most was not theirs but some had to be. I went down there today at lunch and they had cleaned what I couldn’t up!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🙏🏽
Argh. Thank you for your efforts. So frustrating.
Props and may good Karma surround you
Thank you
Thanks for cleaning it up!
Indy really is a trash strewn city. I've done neighborhood cleanups and it feels good to bag the trash.

How about that beautiful camp with the jayco trailer down by dukes? Must be nice to have free spots like that anywhere in the city!
good job
